Arroyo’s Steven Rivera picks Whittier College over Cal-Lutheran … where he will play QB!

Arroyo quarterback/safety Steven Rivera, the 2011 Tribune Player of the Year, will play at Whittier College next season.

Rivera was deciding between Whittier College and Cal-Lutheran over the weekend and decided to become a Poet. The process lasted longer than expected as Rivera sought out the best financial package.

Rivera’s performance at strong safety had some schools wanting him solely for that purpose, but both Whittier and Cal-Lu reportedly wanted Rivera to play QB and compete for the starting position this fall.

Rivera threw for 3,401 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2011. On defense, he recorded 131 tackles, caused seven fumbles, recovered five fumbles and intercepted four passes. Arroyo went 10-2 and won the Mission Valley League for the third consecutive season.

Rivera is the Valley’s all-time leading passer in career yardage and touchdowns passes. He is also top 10 in CIF-Southern Section history in both categories.

Rivera will play quarterback at Whittier College.

Aram’s take: Congrats to Rivera. It’s good to keep him right in our backyard.

  • awesome job Rivera

    Thats great to hear!

Good to see him playing qb at the next level no matter where it is. SCIAC is great competition and a great education! Takes a good student to get into those private schools and play there as well.

Matt Castaneda from Los Altos 05′ 06′ played qb in 2007 and 2008 was the starting Quarterback 08′ season for Whittier College sophomore year and stopped after that year.

Standout Qb Luke Collis from St. Francis was the qb for Occidental for several years as well.

Drew Carreon from Charter Oak went on to play at Redlands as well but i believe he switched to defense either strong safety or a line backer.

I am very confident Steven will win the starting job either this year or the next and make a great impact at Whittier College.

Great job Steven, work hard, play hard, represent the SGV and Arroyo well and get your degree.

  • Coach Slayer

One goes to a school like Whittier college for an education, thats it. If it helps to get financial aid because you agree to play football so much the better. The competition you get in the SCIAAC is about as easy as it gets at the college level including JC level. So congratulations to the young man for going to a fine Liberal Arts school but please don’t equate this school as a football school because it is not. I’m sure Rio Hondo JC could beat them.

  • Dan

Dang Coach Slayer, who cares if it’s a football school or not, can’t you just congratulate and be happy for the kid and move on?

  • socalfootball fan

As an alumnus of Whittier College I am happy to see Steven Rivera join the poet football team. At any of the SCIAC schools you are a true student-athlete. At WC I got a first rate education and was able to go to medical school and get my m.d.

  • Red Leader

Coach slayer, your comment was idiotic and unnecessary. Why would you try to belittle the kid’s accomplishment? Not everyone can play D1. Some kids are happy just to extend their playing years. So congratulate the kid and leave it at that. You’re a knucklehead.

  • Football Guy

Congratulations to him. I saw him play a few times over the last 3 years and this kid is a real good QB for the level he is going to. i wish him well.

As far as Coach Slayer, I suggest you take in a good JC game. A top JC team, CCSF or MT. Sac to name two, would beat any team in the area with the exception of SC and UCLA. For your info, Rio Hondo doesn’t play football.

What a novel concept that Rivera is going to school to get an education. If he gets aid and still gets to play a game he loves, what is wrong with that.

  • Richard T. Nila

    Whittier College, Class of ’83
In high school, I was fortunate enough to play against St. Paul high school in the playoffs. What a tough game! But the toughest game I have ever played in was against Redlands University for the SCIAC championship in ’81. That was not only a championship game but a rivalry game that goes way back.
Steve Rivera, congratulations on your choice. May you enjoy your college experience like I did, may you excel in the classroom, and may you break all the passing records at Whittier College. Bring home some more SCIAC championships!

  • Dan

    Richard Nila,
Just want to say hi! If you are who I think you are, then we are highschool alumni.

  • It’s Only a Weak D3

The quarterback position is a very unique position. It is very dependent on the talent around you and the competition you play against. That is the reason the SGV leading passer is going to Whittier College.

I ask you this question why is it that the number 10 all time in CIFSS in touchdowns and total yardage is ending up at Whittier College?

“best financial package” Aram you really that stupid?

The kid is a good small high school quarterback end of story. If this kid attended Bishop Amat he wouldn’t even have been on the depth chart.

Matt Castaneda from Los Altos 05′ 06′, he quit after a couple years at Whittier College and he was a much better QUARTERBACK than Rivera.

Whittier college is a very weak D3 college don’t expect Rivera to put up any big numbers, its just Whittier College.

  • Coach Slayer

I thought this was a football blog. Young Mr. Rivera has earned alot of recognition on this blog so a little reality check should not hurt him to much. I wonder what was meant by the headline HE WILL PLAY QUARTERBACK. Many QBS even Poets are moved to other positions and I hope he is prepared for that. If my post sounded to critical I apologize to Steve and Poet alumni. I have seen to many local young men go D-3 and drop out quickly because football is their primary interest at these fine D3 schools. I decline to name names but there are many. Concentrate on academics first and enjoy football second and everything will be just peachy. Get your degree!!!

  • Robert Frost

I agree with Coach Slayer! At least CLU has a chance to win the SCIA conference, but with this record, you don’t expect to win much as a POET:

    2011 (2-7, 1-5 SCIAC)
    2010 (2-7, 1-5 SCIAC)
    2009 (3-6, 1-5 SCIAC)
    2008 (1-8, 0-6 SCIAC)
    2007 (4-5, 3-3 SCIAC)
    2006 (2-7, 1-5 SCIAC)
    2005 (2-7, 0-6 SCIAC)
    2004 (2-7, 1-5 SCIAC)
    2003 (1-8, 1-5 SCIAC)
    2002 (1-8, 1-4 SCIAC)
    2001 (2-7, 2-3 SCIAC)
    2000 (4-4, 4-1 SCIAC)
    1999 (0-9, 0-5 SCIAC)

Expect a lot of Homecoming games kid.

    Just sayin’

  • Football Guy

I do not get the negativity. Applaud the kid. He earned what he got. Most negative comments, I would guess, are from guys who never did what he did.

  • Arroyo Alum ’91

I applaud young Steven for getting into Whittier. Get your education young man. That lasts a life time.

One more observation that I couldn’t pass up. The Poets overall record over the last 13 years (if accurate) is almost exactly what we have seen out of mighty Amat in the last 20 years! Don’t you agree Weak D3? I think deep down in that gut of yours, you do! Stones and glasses houses Weak D3. You know what we say.

  • Poet Society

    Coach Slayer

Thou art an artless, base-court apple-john,
Beslubb’ring all whose gaze thou looks upon,
    Thou bootless, beatle-headed, bladder bug,
    Churlishly boil-brained, clapper-clawed old slug!
    Thou art so common-kissing, canker-clawed,
    Dissembling, dizzy-eyed and mealy-mawed!
    Thy dankish, dismal-dreaming, clotpoled ways
Are more errant, in thy unmuzzled daze,
    Than any foot-licked, flea-bit flap-dragon,
Or gleeking, half-faced, hedge-pigged jothead on
    A paunchy, ill-bred, loutish miscreant –
    Thou ever moldwarped, spleeny sycophant!
Were thou less blind in thy bummed, venomed spleen,
Thou wouldst know very well …

    it’s thee…Weak D3… that I mean!

  • Dead Poets Society

    50K to attend Whittier College?

Now that’s an alumni base that can assure you Taco Bell Manager status from jump !

  • just sayin’

Arroyo Alum – Here’s the funny thing. I know you all have “feelings” about what you “think” Amat has been like over the past 10 seasons. But if you forget what you “wish” to be true – and look at some facts – you’d notice something far different.
In those last 10 years, when Amat has been so down, They are still ranked by Cal Preps as the #29 team in the State.
    And in those 10 years they have wins over #3, 7, 9, 10, 11, 22, & 24?
    – and of course, Arroyo is #529
    So – you were sayin’?

  • Coach Slayer

Poet Society: I hope knowing how plagerize Elizabethan insults from the Bard is not all you learned at Whittier College. It’s pompous asses like yourself that never have an original thought but pass others words as ther own that make me worry for this world .Frauds are rampant even on the blogs. By the way learn Iambic pentameter, I prefer my insults in that meter.

  • X’s and O’s

The sciac is a great experience and not too many people can say they played college NCAA football… Sciac is full of quality young men who love to play football… D 3 level shows true love for the game and this level of football produces a TON of great high school coaches that teach the game the correct way

  • Arroyo Alum ’91

    just sayin’

I wasn’t talking to you, but here’s the funny thing little 5 footer, I know you lancer honks like to remember the good times over there at that dump you call a football field. What is it – Kaiser field, Cancer field? Whatever! Not what I “think” Amat has been like over the past 10 seasons. Its what your record in fact is (CalPreps, MaxPreps, SGV Tribune, Fred Robles, etc). But if you forget what you “wish” to be true – and look at some facts – you’d notice something far different. Let me add to your memorable moments in the last 10 years:
    – 1 shared league title several years ago
    – 1 2011 “coin-flip” championship to get into the playoffs
    – Several terrible beatings in the 1st round of the playoffs

And as somebody else constantly reminds you around here – No CIF Championship Since 1995!

    So – you were sayin’?

  • just sayin’

Arroyo 91 – on a blog, everyone is talking to everyone. There are no private conversations. And no one was talking Amat until you brought it up. But since you did –

You see who you are is based on who you play and who you beat. Since Arroyoa plays no one – they beat no one. Just to clear things up, Amat was League champs in 2009 (not “several years ago”) and in 2010 was undefeated and played for the league title on the last game of the year.

Those numbers on the link don’t lie. even in those last 10 years when Amat is so down – #29 with all those wins over teams like St Bonaventure, Orange Lutheran, Mater Dei, Servite, Santa Margarita, St John Bosco, Loyola, Notre Dame, Crespi, Rancho Cucamonga, Charter Oak, Glendora, Diamond Ranch, West Covina, Damien, Muir, St Francis, St Paul, Dominguez, Venice, Chaminade, Alemany – every one of which is better than even the very best win that Arroyo has had in the same “last 10 years”.

Unless you can name one better without everyone laughing you out of the room. Go to town and give it a try.

  • AMAT 73

    elhoyo 91,
When was the last time Arroyo hung a CIF football championship banner in their gym ?????? Couldn’t seem to find anything on max preps about a title won by Arroyo . Maybe you can help me out here.

  • “A” Little Ignorant, “A” Little Arrogant…!

And the Ignorance and Arrogance of the Amat Blowhards shows up once again…!

Just Swallows’ read your Weak D3 post and tell us who broght up the Lanceritos first…! That’s right…! Your dumb azz blowhards did. Why are you trying to insult a kid from Arroyo by saying he wouldn’t even make the roster at Cancer Field (lol…I like that one Arroyo ’91)? How many banners did “wonder boy 9” bring to your rat infested lunch room (errrr Gymnasium!)?

Now you have Mrs Doubt Fire ’73 coming on here and piling on? You low lifes have hit a new low in the SGV…! How about congratulating the kid and moving on, you dip sh*ts?

How many championships did “9…da” win for you? What…? That’s right…”9…da”! KARMA biaaatch!

Arroyo ’91, here’s one more observation for you. Like the POETs, the umpa lumpas of BishopNation haven’t won a championship in the last 20 years either….! And this year they’re gonna get their azzes handed to them by Chino Hills and Charter Oak!!! And that’s just the SGV…!

Not Since 1995 and Not In 2012 either!

PS: Congratulations Mr. Rivera. Get yourself a great education…!

There are many online services using the internet in today’s times, plus lots of hours of info, it can be complex to find out what could be reputable, in addition what folk precisely conjure. The very same applies to diet routines or some kind of way of reducing weight. In the past i have gone through a whole lot with respect to healthy hcg diet, and additionally am unsure things to figure out through anything and everything. It appears that hcg injections may be the path to take, nonetheless they come across highly-priced, and then you are required to have a medical professional. I tend to be attempting to find about using the hcg drops, assuming they start to truly work. One can find actual painless hcg drops, as well as herbal treatments hcg drops you can buy in all places. Shoppers can obtain painless hcg drops with Walmart this moment. The diet program of which complements hcg, may sound like this is a hunger diet when they say that you eat smaller than 500 caloric intake per day. I’d sense that clients would probably get slimmer on top of any eating plan like this. Furthermore, they acknowledge hcg helps you learn how to stick to the dietary plan, on top of that forces the actual body in order to really burn way more excess body fat.
