Damien beats Ayala to win Ayala Tournament … Gano calls Josh Savage “best receiver in the Valley”

Damien beat Ayala in the championship game of Saturday’s Ayala Tournament.

“We looked okay,” Damien coach Greg Gano said of the win. “We did some good things. But it doesn’t mean anything. We have to see if we can compete and this means we can compete a little bit. But I know we’ve got some skill kids who can do good things.”

Gano later went on to call receiver Josh Savage the best receiver in the Valley. He also singled out quarterback Gage Pucci, cornerback Jonathan Lyles and brothers Nick and Alex Sherwood for having strong performances.

For Ayala, it was another good showing after the Bulldogs did damage in the conso bracket of the Bonita Air Assault last week.

Aram’s take: I said in a previous All-Encompassing SGV(N) Top 25 that Damien could wind up being the No. 1 team in the SGV(N) by the time summer was said and done. Saturday’s showing, albeit against not the strongest overall field in the world, is a step in that direction. I’m hearing from all places about how loaded Damien is this season.

Great game played today, by both sides final score was 28 to 24 with the spartans on top. Great plays were made on both sides of ball and how bout that, two sierra league teams going for the championship game at the end of the day. Ayala won every game before that with 3 touchdown leads, with a dominating performance over Corona Santiago, its safe to say that both Ayala and Damien looked much improved then last year, although it is only passing league it was great entertainment, the bulldogs are looking good so far hopefully then carry it into the season, they just need to get their line right.

Saw all of Ayala’s games. It seems like they are improving over years past but it’s just passing league so I’m not going to read much of anything into it.

Ayala football has always had good teams from what I’ve seen. The problem is they play in a tuff league and injuries seem to always play a factor. Good luck and maybe they make a run. I know it’s “ONLY PASSING LEAGUE” but lets congratulate the boys for their efforts. Good job BULLDOGS

Seen Josh run a route the other day and he was bracketed high low and so he does this move and then a stutter step and before you know it I’m thinking, “Is that a route”? The next thing I know he puts on the jets hits the seam and cradles in a touch down and both defenders are flat footed…LOL

Geez…what the heck was that? !

    Kid is sick.

Gano’s going to have fun this year.

  • Time…?

Savage is a very very good receiver. The problem is going to be, will he have time to do a move, stutter step and then put on the jets before the qb is running for his life and tossing the ball into the middle of the field to avoid getting sacked? The other receivers may be small, but are fantastic….. however again, if Gano really wanted to take advantage of his talent, he would go to the spread and drop the little qb back 5 yards to get a head start. They are going to have a hard time taking snaps under center, dropping back 3-5 steps and then wham looking at D Lineman & LB’s blitzing. YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT IN PASSING LEAGUE… Also the QB has perfect vision at the entire field ahead of him… he is not looking at the Backs of Helmets moving backwards towards him and bodies and arms moving at a high rate of speed ready to throw him to the ground, repeatedly…. and don’t start with that 3-4 second time thing… yah, we know in Passing League they don’t get to sit back there all day and wait, they have to deliver the ball…. but you honestly can not discount the fact of it is far different when all you are worrying about is looking at the lb / db coverage and don’t have to worry about the 220 lb plus guy’s screaming at you from all directions.

Damien’s skill guys are good, very good every last one of them including the running back who is gonna surprise people…. but the success of their offensive attack is contingent on the “hogs” up front and those guy’s are still very, very questionable. Even with one xfer from Glendora….
