Charter Oak names junior Kory Brown starting quarterback for Friday’s opener at Roosevelt …

Charter Oak’s offseason-long quarterback battle between junior Kory Brown and senior Ross Barrera may not be totally over, but Brown will start Friday’s road opener against Roosevelt.

Both quarterbacks are expected to see ample playing time.

“It comes down to Kory is going to start and as the game goes on, I decide who stays and who plays,” Charter Oak head coach Lou Farrar said. “I can’t make that decision until I see how we move the ball on our first series.

“I’m not afraid to play either one and say ‘call the plays and here we go.'”

Brown backed up standout Travis Santiago last season. Barrera was a back up at Bishop Amat last year before transferring in the offseason.

Running back is a little less clear. Donavin Washington figures to be the feature back, but since he starts at corner back on defense his carries may need to be spaced. Khari Garcia, another starting defensive back, also figures in the mix at running back.

Is Barrera going to play another position if Kory starts or is he just the backup QB?

  • CO Playa

Barrera looked good all summer long. His accuracy was not as good as Kory, but he showed better wheels than Kory. I think Kory just showed a better arm overall. It was close til the end, and if Barrera was the pick, I think everyone would feel comfortable with that also. CO is fortunate to have two very good QB’s. We will have a very good season.

I think Ross would be a better overall choice. He has the speed, strength, heart and focus most kids lack. He would bring lots of win to the CO nation!

Plenty of good athletes back on this years team. It will be interesting to see what kind of intensity CO returns with. I have a feeling there may be some un-vented emotion remaining after that last playoff disaster. I saw a little of it during last weeks scrimmage.
Big shoes to fill for Kory and Ross.
I think there may be more to see at the running back position besides Donavin and Khari. Just a hunch.
    Defense does look good IMHO

  • Old CO

Tow different quarterbacks; Brown is straight drop back, Barrera gives CO the option to throw or run- whack is key to the success of the Chargers

    Whatever happened to ontiveros????

Pops was trying to shop the kid around like he was some type of gem. He is not even spoken of, I believe he played for west Covina left to charter oak then left for another school and then went back to charter oak. Is he even 3rd string at charter oak or did he leave that school too?
