Jordan Robinson and Ayala hoping for breakout party against Monrovia on Friday …

By Aram Tolegian

Jordan Robinson is flying under the radar … for now.

The Ayala High School running back/defensive back is well known to coaches in the Sierra League as one of the most dangerous players their teams will face this season.

But outside of that coaching circle, not many other coaches or fans have heard his name as often as they should. That could start changing in a big way on Friday when Robinson and the Bulldogs host two-time defending CIF-Southern Section Mid-Valley Division champion Monrovia. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

“We’ve been watching film all week,” Robinson said of Monrovia. “They have athletes, but they’re not unbeatable. I want to just go out there and show our team can compete with these guys.

“They’re ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in your poll and if we go out there and beat them then we’re definitely making a statement that we can compete.”

Even with Monrovia coming to town, the spotlight will also be shining on the Bulldogs, who have gotten plenty of hype this offseason and are ranked No. 8 in the Tribune’s latest area rankings. Monrovia is the No. 1 team in the Pasadena Star-News rankings.

For Monrovia, the expectations are nothing new. But for Ayala, so many expecting such big things is a change from the norm.

“I think it’s right,” Robinson said of the rankings. “We have a nice team. We have athletes. We just didn’t put it together as well as we should have last year. This year, we’re a year older and we’ve been through it. I’m pretty sure we can turn it around.”

Ahh, last year. That’s probably the reason why Robinson isn’t yet on the radar of college recruiters like he should be. There’s no doubt he’s one of the best athletes around, but Ayala’s struggles in the won-loss column may be why so many folks just don’t know it.

Robinson is bent on using his senior season to make up for that. He started last week by rushing for 207 yards and three touchdowns in a 46-17 win over Diamond Bar. For Robinson, it was just a continuation of 2011, in which he ran for over 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns.

But now, stats are just as important as wins, because the more Ayala puts itself on the map, the more eyes will be opened to Robinson’s talents.

Beating Monrovia would be a great way to super charge the process.

When Robinson is on offense, he’ll be trying to plow through a Monrovia defense led by the linebacker duo of Colorado-bound George Frazier V and Northwestern-bound Brett Walsh.

When Robinson is playing corner back on defense, he will be trying to cover either Mason Bryant or Anthony Craft, both of whom already have multiple Division I college offers.

“Honestly, I can’t tell you why I don’t have any offers yet,” Robinson said. “I’m not a college coach, so I don’t know exactly why.”

Robinson and his senior classmates went undefeated as freshmen in 2009.

Their success hasn’t translated to the varsity level yet. As sophomores, only a handful of that class was pulled up to varsity, including Robinson, who broke his leg after four games. The team won just four games and was blanked in the Sierra League.

Last year, the Bulldogs won just three games, but at least one of them came in league. This is the ballyhooed class’ final attempt to deliver under the lights on all the promise they showed four years ago.

“It definitely motivates us,” Robinson said. “We’re all together now again and we’re clicking. It can only get better from here.”

“We definitley can compete with the Sierra League. It’s a tough league, but we have the athletes and the skill players to do it. It’s just about putting it all together.”

    Saw his highlight reel and I would ask does Dionza Blue have a twin brother?… This kid is very dynamic and sees the field well, the big difference is can he escape our secondary and make the big plays by himself? Our Defense will surely be tested and if we come out ahead in this game we can start putting the metal down with teams not so fortunate to have such weapons. Monrovia’s offense will be tested early on as well. We have a plethora of good backs and receivers that can go the distance at any given time, but it will be our Defense and special teams play that will win this game.

    This is what you beef up the schedule for, right? To play top-notch talents like Robinson. Only gets you better. I wouldn’t sleep on the QB Meyette either. He can fling it. This is a good challenge for your boys. Ayala isn’t overwhelming at the line of scrimmage, so you guys shouldn’t be thrown around or anything. Could be a nice game with both teams letting their skills guys rip.

    M-Town 31, Ayala 21.

  • Observantcat

    Hey Aram, looking at Meyette’s stats from last season doesn’t make me tremble in my boots with a -65 yrds rushing and 856 yrds passing with 10 TD’s and 4 Int.s. It makes me wonder if that is their weakest link. With the kind of pressure that Monrovia should put on him it could be a nightmare for a QB unless he can get that quick release. Monrovia’s disadvantage will be the first game preparation, but this season I dont see that being a problem. Heyworth has been looking good all year and as Maddox quoted “He’s much better at this point of the season that last year.

  • Aram

    Could be wrong, but I think Meyette got hurt last year. Anyway, he looked sharp all summer and looks the part. We’ll see. Yeah, you pressure him and you may on your way.

    I think G5 and Brett Walsh are the keys here. Like G5 said, they can’t let Jordan get to the sideline and turn up. So they’re gonna have to string him out and come up and hit. Same with Mason Bryant and Craft. Gotta come up and hit.

    Jordan is a very dangerous player and will be a hard RB to shut down. Because he can run, catch and line up at RB or WR, you practically can create some match up issues vs our Big LB’s. I like what he has to say. Monrovia’s track record has shown, that were are beatable in games like this. If the Cats are going to win, they are going to have neutralize this kid. Shutting down a player like this isn’t going to happen. However, Jordan, is going to have to use a lot of energy on the Defensive side of the ball. If we work him on Defense and Offense, maybe he slows down a little bit. We can not allow this kid to have 200 yrds. If that happens, we are probably losing the battle up from and probably playing from behind. I rather him have more Rec yards than rushing, which would probably mean, they are trying to get back in the game and need to throw. I expect the cats LB’s to Hit hard, and make him earn every yard. I think Robinson, will get a offer to play DB. He reminds me of Dionza Blue over at Bishop and Deshawn Love over at West Covina. Dangerous from Def, Off and special teams.

    @Observant Cat,

    The kid QB; Meyette didn’t start his first Varsity game until CO last season, or so I’ve been told, and didn’t fully get the nod until close to the end of the season so you have to take into consideration when looking at what a kid can do/not do. Wallace took probably 90% of the preseason snaps and about half of the regular season snaps – in the 4 preseason games and 4 home league games I saw. Thinking out loud; guessing it was REAL hard for a first time head coach to hand the reigns of his Varsity squad to a Sophomore. Most coaches wouldn’t do it period ever.

  • Truth Be Told!

    Watched him play last year at St. Paul, this dude can flat out ball. He almost single handedly beat them.

  • s.g.v legend

    Dionza blue and Jordan Robinson are small backs, if defenders put a some good hitting on them, I dont think they can take the pound, physical play will enhance their abilities.

  • AyalaBulldogFan

    @ s.g.v.,

    They gotta catch ’em first. Those are some sick fast young men. Their speed is not something you see everyday.

  • That didn’t take long

    Hey Greenie are you up in the pastures crying? or are you ready to tell us, how monrovia needs to get over this problem of not being ready in non league play. What about all those D1 players that you have this year huh huh huh? Now what are you going to come up with? Greenie this is the problem with guys like you, you come on here spilling your guts all over the place on how good Monrovia is ,and how many D1 players you have, and how nobody wants any green and white. Well Ayala had all the green and white ass they wanted tonite!! your ass is gone! now check and see if they didn”t take you green nut sack too HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

  • LMAO @ Green and White

    Come into our house fat, lazy, out of shape and cocky as &#!%

    How’d that work out for ya? Yeah you only lost by one but your QB looked close to dreadful, your D1 guys… were they even there? I didn’t see any D1 talent… on YOUR side of the field. ROFL. Couldn’t even score more than a field goal until the 4th quarter. Pathetic. “You don’t want no green and white”…. ROFLMFAO!!!! Get your D11 trash off our field and out of our city.

    Oh, and one last things I’ll leave you with; in case you’re wondering your PROGRAM got swept by the bottom dwellers of the Sierra League – Ayala Bulldogs. Your JV and Freshmen got beat on like a set of cheap drums.

    Try some humility next time, it’s a LOT tastier to swallow than CROW!

    Observantcat, COME OUT AND PLAYEE! Oh Observantcat, COME OUT AND PLAYEE! What? You only go log on at the library after a win? I hope all Monrovia myopic fans now understand what everyone who doubted your team was saying. It isn’t that we’re “haters” as you described, it’s just a fact you guys only beat up on the weak and every time you play somebody decent (not great) YOU LOSE!

  • Kennedy Bryant

    First and foremost congratulations to Ayala on their victory it still remains to be seen what this all means its just week 1. Im disappointed in the loss however the loss has nothing to do with M-town being in Div 11 or being overwhelmed or outplayed by Ayala this was no beat down or an embarrassment.

    Ayala may eventually be a good team who really knows at this point, Monrovia just didnt get It done and it is as simple as that. You cannot win football games with 5 turnovers, having a punt blocked for safetys, missing extra points, and missing gimme field goals. There were a number of factors contributing to this loss, which should be handled internally and wont be discussed here on the blog but you can beat your sweet you know what there needs to be a discussion about our teams game performance . Having said that we have some tweaking to do and Im confident that we are a great team and we will get it done.

    Today us M-town fans find ourselves in the same boat as Muhammad Ali, you know , after talking all that trash about Smoking Joe Frazier and coming out with a few more lumps than you expected and a defeat and having to get up off the canvas. Sometimes you have to take those chins shots and right hooks to realize talking about never gets it done. So in closing we have a long season ahead of us lets see if we can return the favor like Ali did with Joe Frazier, and for those of you who thought I was going to run a hide, its not going to happen. Im like the US Flag and the Stars and Stripe we dont run for ANYONE. Observant Cat, I got your back like a spinal cord but pass me the plate of crow you know I hate eating it but sometime we must do what we must do. SEE ya Next week.

    @K. Bryant,
    Enjoy that plate of crow, at least you are man enough to come on after defeat. Next week’s win won’t count because again you guys don’t have no trouble beating up on the weak teams and that obviously includes Arcadia. Let’s see how you guys do in two weeks against San Dimas. Observantcat, I don’t want you coming on here after next week’s win pounding your chest and telling everyone how dominant M-Town is beating up on doormat Arcadia and how you guys have five D1, etc., etc., etc.

  • Down for the count

    K. Bryant,

    @Kennedy Bryant
    Your the man, you have my respect for your post after a tough loss. I don’t know much about Monrovia, but i believe they should be with us in the southeast.

    Unbelievable a proper compiled web page. My husband and i appreciated studying it rather a lot. There are such a lot of places using the net recently, in addition such a large amount of resources, it might be painful to deduce whats substantial, additionally what ladies solely make up. The same thing goes for diet routines or some kind of variety of fat burning. In the past i have taken a look at alot with respect to healthy hcg diets, and therefore am not certain what things to identify out from just about everything. It seems that hcg needles may just be the way to go, they also may seem costly, also, you are required to have a medical professional. Now i am itching to know about the use of hcg drops, considering that they actually work. There are honest simple hcg drops, and moreover holistic easy hcg drops purchasable everywhere. The individual can also locate easy hcg drops found at Walmart at this point. The diet which often fits hcg, feels like it’s just a misery diet given that they declare you eat not quite 600 calorie consumption daily. We’d assume that consumers should probably melt fat upon any eating habit that adheres to that. In addition they say that hcg makes it possible to realize ways to stick to the diet program, as well aids your physique with the intention to burn up more and more surplus fat.
