No. 1 Bishop Amat (2-0-1) at No. 2 Charter Oak (2-0)

Why Bishop Amat will win … Tradition and mystique, of course! OK, just kidding. As nice as those two factors are, there’s plenty more to the 2012 Lancers than that. The fact is that Amat is the more reliable offense if we’re going off of what we’ve seen so far. QB Koa Haynes has been excellent, running back Dionza Blue might be the best player in the Valley and receiver/defensive back Darren Andrews is a big-play machine. The Lancers have proven they can get their playmakers going against top-flight competition. If the run isn’t working, Haynes can make a big pass. If the pass isn’t working, Blue can be unstoppable on the ground. Amat’s defense has given up some points, but the level of competition has to be considered. This stop unit can fly and loves to hit. And yet despite that, if Amat wins on Friday it will be because either Haynes, Blue or Andrew make one or two more big plays than Charter Oak.

Why Charter Oak will win …
Defense, defense, defense. The Chargers have allowed just 14 points this season and some people think they shouldn’t have allowed any. Charter Oak’s defense combines good size with excellent speed. The big question is whether the Chargers’ coaching staff will try to win it with the defense or let the defense be what bails the offense out all night. It may not be a good idea for the offense to be too cute or aggressive against Amat. If Charter Oak uses its defense to wait out Amat and set up the offense with a couple of good situations, then the Chargers stand a good chance to knock off No. 1. The defense will have to force at least two mistakes by the Lancers, which isn’t easy to do.

What will happen … Charter Oak will come out and try for one or two big plays, which Amat will defend perfectly. From there, the game will settle into a grinder with the Chargers defense not letting Blue or Andrews get loose for quick, momentum-changing scores. Don’t expect many points in the first half. In the second half, the Chargers ground game will start to have success and one big play by QB Kory Brown will put CO on the brink of the win. Amat will answer, but Chargers kicker Jack Schneider will get the last laugh by hitting a field goal to put his team ahead. CO’s defense does the rest. … Charter Oak 17, Amat 14.

Amat’s tradition is more history…like the when I read the Pride and Tradition of Apache Football at Arcadia…what pride…no one was at that game for Arcadia but what a wonderful stadium.

They’ve been relevant as a playoff team…but title talks not really…so I guess you give them Mystique?

I’m just wondering what the Lancer teams the first half of the last decade would have been like in Haggerty had been the man then?

  • score

    Amat-45 CO-28

  • Kenendy Bryant

28-24 CO on a last minute touchdown to pull out the upset. Should be a great game…..Aaron Vaughns will be big for CO. Darren Andrews has a breakout game for Amat. Good luck fellas. Ive known Aaron Vaughn and his family for a long time so I have to go with CO.

Not impressed with the teams that Charter Oak has played thus far. Los Al was watered down and missing a grip of players. Amat will be ready and show why they are the top dog in the sgv, but, we already know that right? What everyone on the Charter Oak band wagon is hoping is that SOMEONE in the SGV will take down Goliath lest we spend another year of hearing Fred tell us how good Amat is!!! Dream on haters and band wagon riders, Amat will show why Fred has an extra bottle of ink just for the LANCERS!!!!

  • La Mirada guy

Amat wins this one . Haynes or Blue? pick your poison, someone will beat you. Say all you want about Charter Oak only giving up 14 points, but Roosevelt? Ok, Los Al is the real deal, but it’s not Servite.
    Amat 38 Charter Oak 24

  • Valley athletics

Amat has put up points against servite who has a much better defense than charter oak . Amat put up 48 points on charter oak that has a defense as good as charter oak . Amat has put up points against a very big and good la mirada . Charter has not proved anything defensively . Los al is not at the level this year as they where last couple years and Roosevelt has only scored 14 points in three games . Amat 28-co 17 .

  • Better Game

I believe that Loyola and SJB are both better than either Amat or Charter Oak, and the great thing is, you can see Loyola take on SJB in Bellflower this Friday. Of course, if local bragging rights are paramount in your priorities, by all means go to Charger stadium.

  • White Fang

To Better Games. When was the last time Loyola beat Bishop Amat?

  • Black Tooth

I don’t think this game will prove who is number one in the SGV, though Fred and Aram might have something to say about this. Why, because ‘anything can happen on any given Sunday.’ What this game might prove is the constant argument about the Pac-5 vs everyone else, Div. 7, Div. 11 etc. Which ever team does not win, I hope that team is able to go deep into the CIf playoffs. ‘LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE.’

  • CO Bro

I’m not too sure CO’s o-line can stand up against Amat. If they can control the line of scrimmage CO will win, if Amat’s defensive line can stop CO’s running game they walk away with the W.

Good luck to both teams, better get to the game early or you will be standing!

  • Better Game

To White Fang: when I spoke of THIS FRIDAY’S Loyola-SJB game, it meant that I favor THIS YEAR’S Cub team over either Amat or CO. I was not referencing teams from decades past and certainly didn’t mean to violate the sanctity of your memories.

    Rolling, Rollig, Rolling,

I truly hope that Hag’s takes off the good sportsmanship hat for this game and runs the score up as high as he can. If ever a message needed to be sent, Friday night is it!!!!
    Rolling, Rolling, Rolling
    keep them Lancer’s Rolling,

I not sure how Healthy BA is this week so I have “Dos Prediciones”.

    If BA is healthy,

    BA 34 CO 17

    If BA is not healthy,

    CO 24 BA 20

  • Henry Rollins

What’s with all this Lancers not healthy B.S.? Who’s hurt? Last I checked there were o major injuries to the Lancer football team? Amat will be ready to play come Friday night! Let’s GO AMAT! Message Night come FRIDAY! This is a MUST WIN game for the Lancers and a MUST WIN BIG GAME at that!!!! Let’s get after those charter oak QB’s and put some hurt on em!!! Play the cut back and stuff the point of attack! Blitz! Blitz! Blitz! Two and a half days charter oak. Two and a half days………

  • Mean Green Pastures….

I am not trying to start any rumors regarding Bishop’s health. I though I read somewhere that a few players were questionable…Both teams need all their guns in this one.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Donavin Washington’s status uncertain at Charter Oak
    By Aram Tolegian, SGVN

    Updated: 09/10/2012 09:03:26 PM PDT

Charter Oak High School running back/defensive back Donavin Washington remains questionable to play in Friday’s showdown against Bishop Amat after suffering a sprained ankle that held him out of last week’s win over Los Alamitos.

Although the Chargers typically use a handful of ball carriers, Washington is generally considered the starter. He also starts at corner back and is arguably the Chargers’ top cover man.

“He’ll go back to physical therapy Monday and Tuesday and get re-evaluated after that,” Farrar said. “We’ll do everything we can, but he was on crutches on Friday night. I don’t think he’ll be full speed. If you’re on crutches one Friday, it’s kind of hard to be full speed the next Friday.

Senior Aaren Vaughns, an All-Area receiver last season, switched over to running back against Los Alamitos and ran for 276 yards in the Chargers’ 22-14 win. Regardless of whether Washington plays, Vaughns figures to get his fair share of carries against Amat.

“Aaren is such a great athlete, he’ll have to definitely play there now,” Farrar said. “We’ll give him, Khari Garcia and Donavin a chance to carry the football. But he is such a valuable asset to us on defense, too. Fortunately for us, Aaren can play a lot of positions. Unfortunately for him, it kind of means he gets banged up a little.”

Both Amat and Charter Oak, by virtue of their strong showings so far, have set the stage for one of the biggest games in the area in years. Amat

enters 2-0-1 and Charter Oak is 2-0. It figured to take a lot to have both teams be unbeaten for this matchup, but the Lancers were able to beat Servite and then survived a scare at Chino Hills with a tie. Amat then put a stop to La Mirada’s big start by handing the Matadores their first loss.
Charter Oak needed to win on the road at Roosevelt and Los Alamitos. The Chargers did just that and have allowed just 14 points this season. Farrar knew he had have an amazing defense, but offense was a question after star quarterback Travis Santiago graduated and running back Kurt Scoby transferred.

“We’re all very happy with our start,” Farrar said. “We had a really long, hard preparation for the season because we knew full well what we were getting into with the schedule. Our kids have responded hard. We lost a couple of great individuals, but we had to replace them with about 56 other guys.”

  • Not Since 1995

    C’mon Aram…Give me a break…!

No way Bishop Amat loses by 3 points…!

    Not In 2012…

  • Do your homework

    White Fang,
    Loyola beat Amat last year.

  • Jefe

    Amat wins this one comfortably.

  • AMAT 73

What’s the feeling on the Loyola game ????

  • Jefe

    AMAT 73,

I think the main concern most Braves fans have at this point is that the defense really hasn’t been tested yet. A lot of us are curious as to how they will perform against a pretty solid Loyola O line and Wyatt Bradford pounding the rock.

The home teams haven’t had too much trouble winning these games the past few years and honestly I do feel a lot better about this one being played in Bellflower.

    Should be a good one.

  • Better Game

Despite the Servite win, Amat is on track to drop from the playoffs in the early rounds, as is their tradition, while the Chargers are overmatched in the inland, and will likewise make an early exit.

All the Lancers can say is that they would do better in an earlier decade, and all the Chargers can say is that they’d kick ass back in the Southeast. All this and NO TAILGATING…see you at the Bosco game.

  • Tail Gate

You can tailgate all you want at Charter Oak. Of course, alcohol and smoking will get you ousted by the Covina P.D.

  • Better Game?

Bosco has made the playoffs, what, once in the last decade? Who’s over their head? And Loyola has made the playoffs only twice in the last 6 years with NO wins. And that’s gonna be a better game?

  • AMAT 73

    Better game,
FYI tailgating is allowed at CO so check your sources. By the way you failed to mention which one of those two teams in the better game is yours . Or is it that you are just a football fan and have no horse in the race ??? We don’t play SJB but if you’re a cub fan we can discuss that .
