Elijah Asante now offensive coordinator at Lakewood … Scoby down to two? … More players leave St. Paul …

Here’s your Friday update on the St. Paul/Asante/Scoby situation.

Elijah Asante, who was fired earlier this week after six games as the head coach at St. Paul, is now the offensive coordinator at Lakewood High School. Lakewood is 5-2 and locked in a contentious battle in the Moore League.

As for running back Kurt Scoby, word is that he’s deciding between two schools — Bishop Amat and Cathedral. I’ve heard other rumors, too. In fact, Fred Robledo tweeted this morning that Scoby is also interested in Bosco Tech. That would be a mild surprise.

Finally, beside Scoby, defensive back Ricky Bryant and OL/DL Sebastian Bright have both left the team. Word is that TE/WR Darrell Cloy will remain with the team for the remainder of the season, but might transfer in the offseason.

Is the minority athlete getting exploited by adults? I get the uneasy feeling that they are. Its seems many are being convinced their by adults that school A is the place to go and be seen rather than the place to go and get a education. Is there anything wrong with that picture? I don,t know but it’s not looking good. I guess results are the answer and we need to start to monitor the results of transfering to see if it was worth it or was it actually harmful. With the minority athlete coming more often than not from a single or no parent home this would make them easy targets for giving them promises that cannot be honestly delivered. I think even Sandra Bullocks movie about taking in that giant foorballer somewhat suspicious and lacking all the truth about the real situation. If CIF does not reign in this transfer thing rather that just let everyone go at any time exploitation may only get worse. When you are a 16 year old boy we think we know things but when you reach maturity you realize you knew nada at that age and was just floating being pulled and influenced to those closest to you. Clearly it is obvious to me Scoby and many other young footballers educational succcsess is secondary and even thirdary to coin a word. Does’nt anyone at St. Paul care about this kid and his future beyond football? It seems clear the answer is no because if he had a true mentor that cared about him he would not be in such a hurry to leave. That goes for the other exploited footballers there also.

  • In this case…

in this case….didn’t the minority coach exploit the minority player?

  • Amat Football

It’s funny that anyone is writing that Scoby is considering Amat. It doesn’t matter what Scoby wants, as Amat will not take him. When the dust settles, I guarantee you that Amat will not be the place that Scoby ends up at. Scoby has not been a student for the last couple of years. What kind of academic record do you think he amassed at St. Paul? Amat does not play those games. If the kid will not be able to cut it academically at Amat, then Amat will not consider the kid. The coaches can want him all they want, but the administration will not allow the kid to come to Amat, as they know he will fail in the classroom. This by far, is the main reason Amat does not recruit some of those big time players, as they scare off some of these players who can’t cut it in the classroom. Just let the dust settle, and I promise you Scoby will not be at Amat.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Don’t know Scoby, but I certainly hope he does not pick Cathedral.

Sad state of affairs at St. Paul. I certainly hope whoever was behind or encouraged the decision on Assante (and I’m no Assante fan) is satisfied.

    What a mess.

    Dear Scoop jackson

You put the blame on the school. St Paul doesn’t have to care. It’s Scoby’s parents or guardian that should be responsible for his departure. Who is in charge in that family. The adult or the child? In addition, to all this, Ask this question? Why isn’t Scoby following Asante to Lakewood? I guess a promise was broken.

Let’s get 1 thing straight Amat Football Bishop Amat also takes in anybody’s. Remember that Lineback er afew year’s ago with a bad heart. he had 5 Fails coming out of Pasadena High . The next thing you know he is starting at Amat. That Academic Crap that Amat preaches is that all crap. You also have to be in a not so state of mind to go to Bosco tech. I know of some Pop-Warner teams that can beat Bosco Tech. Bosco tech is dying a slow death with 390 Boys enrollment. If Scoby does go to Cathedral The undefeated Phantoms will be that much stronger.

  • Bishops Road

He should pick Cathedral for lots of reasons. If we can get Scoby in the purple this week, he possibly can play against St. Paul next friday. We dont need him vs St Paul anyways. SP, you are in trouble. Wish we had him for serra tonight…

  • Gp-aka greenie

Why would a 5-2 team in contention for the Moore title change anything? Hopefully Asante will improve their scoring over the next 3 weeks. If, not he would damage his stock even further. I don’t know what Scooby should do. At this point it’s hard for any teacher to give you a grade almost halfway through the semester. I will say that even if he is cleared, this may all come back to haunt, next FEB during the signing period. Credits may be deficient or incomplete. It was probably in his best interest to stay at St Paul til the Semester break. If he is cleared, Cathedral may need him. I don’t know if BA would admit him or put him on the field without knowing the plays, blocking assignments, and risk of blowing their chemistry. Some times it’s too hard to put a band aid on 3rd degree burns. I don’t know if Minority kids are being exploited. However, I don’t know to many black kids who are catholic, but they attend the schools anyway. However, If you get past the religious aspect of it, it’s Academics and football like anywhere else. The only problem, I would see, is if the private religious school is making these kids take part in services, oaths etc…Then it would be up to the parents to decide if they want their child expose to those views and practices. But I will say none of the private schools put a gun to these families heads. They contact them. In St Paul Asante sold things that he could not deliver, and any coach public or private can do that. The parents bought it, and kids on the team suffer. However, CIF will get complaints anyway. If they change the rule some would say, they are being force to stay at schools. If they leave it like this, the responsibility falls on the parents and coaches. I like the idea of freedom choice. However, there are consequences with either ideologies. Coaches too should examine themselves too. I know Asante knows nothing about private catholic school football and expectations.

  • DBT dad

Fred, Scoby to DBT. If yo.u tweeted that you should be ashamed of yourself.

Football fan! Your wrong about DBT. Bosco is actually on the rise nationally and they have one of the top STEM programs around. There graduates are highly sought after. Yes hey are down in unroll meant but that is by design. To be admitted to DBT you now need to show that you are academically motivated and want to be there. A few weeks ago DBT had one o the more successful college nights in many years around the SGV. There were more then 70 colleges represented from around the country. This was open to all high school students and not just DBT students and their sister schools. There were students from all of the local high schools as well as Bishop Amat. Bosco Tech is alive and well.

As for football, these young men play their tails off from start to finish. Yes we only have abou 30 players per team but Coach Shockley knows what a student athlete is and he demands tha o his young men.

  • I got 2

Here are two reasons why Scoby should go to Bishop Amat rather than Cathedral:

    Reason #1: 2011- Bishop Amat 56, Cathedral 7

    Reason #2: 2010- Bishop Amat 53, Cathedral 6

Scoby is a D-1 college player that should play for a D-1 high school.

  • Tech Support

Seconded on the DBT rumor. He might be interested and their might be a visit or a talk, but knowing the standards at the Tech (plus the fact that transfers need to make up a tremendous amount of classes they missed in the tech major they pick) I just don’t see it happening. Especially is what has been speculated about his grades is true. I have no knowledge of what they might be and I actually hope those just are rumors. But even 4.0 kids coming in have to make up the tech stuff.

Adding my total uninformed speculation my guess is if he goes private it will be at Cathedral. A good team who loves transfers and doesn’t really care about the academic and character of the kid (Randall Carrol anybody?).

I just personally hope the kid finds a good fit and stability somewhere. The fact that I know (or have heard rumors) about so much of his life just by reading blogs is very scary to me.

  • Fashion Police

Is Asante still going to wear the suits on the Lakewood sidelines?

  • Scoby sighting

Scoby was sighted at cathedral game according to someone on live feed . Cathedral lost 42-3 against Serra .

  • Football Fan

To DBT Dad, Bosco tech is a good Academic School but so is Cathedral. Cathedral has a 98% Rate of kids going on to College and those are real Stat’s. Del Rey Champs in Soccer,Del Rey Champs in X=Country,Del rey Champs in Track, CIF S.S. D4 Champions in Vollyball. Freelance League Champs in Water polo. Football every year at least 2 to 3 D1 Players playing Major College football. Baseball Camino Real league Champs, Basketball soon to be Camino Real Champs with a Guantee to beat Cantwell. With Academics and Sports in place Cathedral is the best place for Kurt scoby to succeed. Also Cathedral has the best Alumni Association of any other school in So. Calif. What other School canraise each year over a million dollars to help Inter-City Kids get to College.

  • LJ

Back in the day I took the entrance exam for Bosco tech and did not mske the cut.
I did go to St Paul and played football. In the grand scheme of things St. Paul is going to be Ok they will get a new coach suffer again next year unless they replace Amat, Mater Dei, and Servite on their Scheduel with Pioneer, Cantwell, and El Rancho. Otherwise it will work out and things will be fine at St Paul its just a matter of time.

  • Tech Support

98% is a good stat. How many are four years? More importantly what is tge retention rate after the first year? Not knocking Cathedral because 98% for the population they get is a great thing. But in some ways comparing the two is apples and oranges.

  • DBT dad

I am not saying Scoby should go to DBT and nothing against Cathedral but I agree your are comparing apples to oranges.

  • Welcometoamat

    Hey,

You all must remember amat is a catholic school. We as Christians believe you should not be judged solely on you past, but on your future. This is a great KID we are talking about here. With his commitment and hard we we can help him achieve his goals, have some fun, and certainly continue or success on the field. Let’s look at the big picture, this is a young man from the sgv and like all other amat kids we commite to using our whole village to raise him. It’s not about what you’ve done, it’s about where you’re going. I for one will pitch in and help Kurt succeeded at amat. Hope to see you on at bishop amat kid.

  • AmatDad3

I am a paying Amat parent and refuse to accept his transfer. Because we lost now everyone wants this kid to come. Ive known him since he was 6 years old and I have absolutely no respect for his guardian. She has been talking to people staitng that he will get a free ride wherever he goes. If thats what we’ve become at Amat I am embarrassed. I wish the best for this kid but not at the expense of our STUDENT athletes at Amat. People say don’t judge on his past but that is the excuse we get everytime grades come up. I have friends that say he is currently not eligible academically so if he moves and goes to another school will he be eligible?

  • Football Fan

To Amat Dad Scoby is not going to Amat and he never was. As far as Bosco Tech nobody that is a Good Athlete would ever consider Bosco Tech. If You compare Cathedral and Amat to Bosco Tech that It’s Prime Rib vs. Hamburger Bosco tech. Again BT was a Great Program with a 5 year plan. Now it is just a 390 Boys and a regular school who could afford it. To I got 2 how about every other Sport besides Football that Cathedral kills You Amat guys .

  • Red Bird

Football fan you were right on target until you guaranteed a Basketball league title over Cantwell, not sure if you have seen them play this summer of fall but they are a LA Times top 25 team for sure. No way Cathedral will beat them, I am very aware of the basketball transfers Cathedral has however they still will not beat Cantwell. I am not saying Cathedral will not have a good team but Cantwell’s coaching as well as the teams cohesiveness will be difficult to match.

  • Football Fan

To Red Bird I don’t think you have a better Coach than Cathedral’s Middlebrook’s 1 State Title and 3 cIF SS Championships under his belt. Even with Estrada and Dragovic how are Cantwin going to counter with Cathedral’s Starting Line-up of Two 6’9 Forwards and two 6’6 Guards for the Phantoms . The Phantoms will never lose to Cantwin and that’s Guanteed in any Sport.

  • Red Bird

Zedan is a better coach than Middlebrooks, give him a few more years then we can compare resumes. Cantwell has played and beaten some very good competition over the fall and summer, teams that have similar sized players who were very good, very original with the Cantwin comment. Im looking forward to the league and like I said before Im not taking anything away from Cathedral but they have not played together like Cantwell has over the past summer and fall and have not played the competition Cantwell has. Cantwell has played and beaten Anaheim Canyon, Corona Centennial, Harvard Westlake, Loyola, Cleveland, Dorsey, Westchester, Dominguez, and Long Beach Milikan just to name a few.
