Elijah Asante now offensive coordinator at Lakewood … Scoby down to two? … More players leave St. Paul …

Here’s your Friday update on the St. Paul/Asante/Scoby situation.

Elijah Asante, who was fired earlier this week after six games as the head coach at St. Paul, is now the offensive coordinator at Lakewood High School. Lakewood is 5-2 and locked in a contentious battle in the Moore League.

As for running back Kurt Scoby, word is that he’s deciding between two schools — Bishop Amat and Cathedral. I’ve heard other rumors, too. In fact, Fred Robledo tweeted this morning that Scoby is also interested in Bosco Tech. That would be a mild surprise.

Finally, beside Scoby, defensive back Ricky Bryant and OL/DL Sebastian Bright have both left the team. Word is that TE/WR Darrell Cloy will remain with the team for the remainder of the season, but might transfer in the offseason.

YES! Any players who transfer from St. Paul to another school COULD BE ELIGIBLE THIS SEASON IF …

… they make a valid residential change and can prove the transfer was not athletically motivated.

What that means is a valid change of residence DOES trump the rule that states an athlete cannot play the same sport in the same season at two different schools. It also trumps the “having a second transfer in the same year” rule.

The first part, changing addresses, will be a lot easier than proving the transfer was not athletically motivated.

“The athletic motivation language isn’t as broad as it used to be, but the athletic motivation language is still in the blue book,” CIF Southern Section Director of Information Thom Simmons said Thursday.

So what about transferring from St. Paul to another private school, like, say, Kurt Scoby trying to go from St. Paul to Bishop Amat? Well, all Scoby has to do is move into ANOTHER attendance area. Not Amat’s attendance area, mind you, but ANY OTHER attendance area beside St. Paul’s.

In the case of private schools, CIF considers to be whatever high school that’s closest to a private school to be that private school’s attendance area. So, I’m assuming the attendance area for St. Paul is Santa Fe High.

Kurt Scoby expected to leave St. Paul in wake of Asante firing … Bryant, too. Bright and Cloy also “probably” gone …

Running back Kurt Scoby is expected to leave St. Paul as early as Thursday in the wake of Elijah Asante’s firing as head coach on Wednesday.

Scoby, a junior, was St. Paul’s leading rusher. He transferred to St. Paul after a brief stint at Duarte and before that playing two seasons at Charter Oak.

A source said that junior defensive back Ricky Bryant is also not expected to stay and that 6-foot-3 junior TE/WR Darrell Cloy and 6-0, 270-pound junior C/DT Sebastian Bright are also “probably” gone, too.

One source told me “there’s no way Scoby will be playing for St. Paul on Friday night.”

Scoby has an offer from Miami (Fla.).

Aram’s take: There’s obviously an exodus that’s about to take place. You expect the transfers/kids Asante brought in to leave. Where Scoby ends up is anybody’s guess, but one source I spoke to said Scoby “has a twinkle in his eye about Bishop Amat”. If you’ll recall, even before Scoby left CO last season there was a rumor circulating that he wanted to play at Amat. Charter Oak and Monrovia also figure in the mix. Think about next year at Monrovia, Scoby could be in the same backfield with his former Duarte Hawk teammates in QB Potts and RB Jones. Just a thought to munch on.

St. Paul fires football coach Elijah Asante … AD Casey Morales takes over on interim basis

UPDATED, 11:01 p.m.: Former St. Paul coach Elijah Asante issued the following statement late Wednesday night: “I’m thankful for the opportunity to coach at St. Paul. Although it wasn’t a long tenure, I learned a lot from the players and the community. I’m grateful and I wish them good luck. They have the makings of a good team.”

St. Paul High School has fired football coach Elijah Asante, according to a statement by the school and obtained by this newspaper late Wednesday.

Asante was in his first season as head coach of the Swordsmen. He will be replaced by athletic director Casey Morales, who will serve as the interim coach for the remainder of the season. St. Paul is 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the Mission League.

When contacted late Wednesday, Asante said he was not aware of the school’s decision but had heard rumors and was waiting to speak with school principal Kate Aceves. He confirmed he was not at practice on Wednesday.

Asante replaced legend Marijon Ancich, who left the school as the second-winningest coach in California history. Prior to St. Paul, Asante was at City Section power Carson for two seasons where he led the Colts to back-to-back Division City Section championship game appearances.

Asante also beat Southland juggernaut Mater Dei twice in his two seasons at Carson. Although the Swordsmen have just one win this season, they have played one of the toughest schedules in the Southern Section with games against Servite, Mater Dei and Bishop Amat.

Upon arriving at St. Paul, Asante attracted several high-impact transfers to the Santa Fe Springs campus, most notably junior running back Kurt Scoboy, who starred at Charter Oak last season before leaving for Duarte and later St. Paul.

Asante will remain as a teacher at St. Paul for the duration of the school year.

St. Paul started Mission League play last week with a 44-11 loss to Harvard-Westlake. The Swordsmen host Chaminade on Friday.
