Damien receives a whopping 70! applicants for open head coach job …

Damien received a whopping 70 applications for its open varsity football head coach job, according to principal Dr. Merritt Hemenway.

The deadline to apply for the job vacated by the resignation of Greg Gano passed earlier this month and now Hemenway and crew have moved on to sifting through all the applications and are aiming to start interviewing late next week.

“Because of the overwhelming numbers of applicants we need to develop a “short list” and are talking about filtering candidates to that list first,” Hemenway said via email on Thursday. “Thanks to my experience of being around Catholic high school sports for over 30 years, there are about a dozen men on the list that I know by reputation well enough already that I could see them as a potential good fit for Damien.

“This will be a nice challenge.”

Aram’s take: Stunned disbelief. I was thinking 30 or 35. The prevailing notion around town is that the Damien football program is on the skids, but 70 applicants clearly think otherwise. I wonder if the prospect of Damien moving to an all-Catholic school league/division has something to do with it. It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens with the interview process. By the way, speaking from experience, Hemenway runs a tight ship when it comes to thing like this, so information may be limited as to who the finalists are.

So who do you think is on the “Short List”

  • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

My vibe is SEVERAL current and former parochial school coaches are on the list. Wouldn’t surprise me if Verti, Di Fiori and Gallagher were on there. Also, Elijah Asante. I think this gig, especially with Dr. Hemenway at the helm is very attractive to guys who have been at parochials already.

    • sgvfootballfan

I think Elijah Asante is a good fit as well. I think he has what it takes to turn the Damien Football Program around and make them contenders again. He has Div 1 experience and even took Carson to the City Section Div 1 Championship as the #1 seed. Impressive! Asante also has the respect of many high school, college and NFL coaches that a lone says a great deal about his ethics and how he runs his program.

      • scotty bore as

knowing Merritt Hemenway, and how he’s led as an administrator at several schools, Asante has no chance at all

        • sgvfootballfan

@scotty … I appreciate your opinion. Can you elaberate on WHY you feel this way? I know the coaches in question and they are all very seasoned just not sure why he wouldn’t have any chance. Thx

          • scotty bore as

Asante is not Hemenways type of coach, he’s over the top,the center of attention, focused on getting transfers in, he’s a City schools type guy, he’d ruffle everybodys feathers at Damien and not in a good way, Hemenway will hire somebody with a similar spiritual background, a committment and a belief in a parochial school education( the anti gano) look for a new AD as well, don’t discount either of the Salter brothers, or any of the Amat staff that have prior head coaching experience, if Matt Bechtel is seriously interested, I’d make him a slight, very small favorite, in a new league possibly, Damien could become Loyola light, and I mean that in the most complimentary of ways.

          • tor eckman

Agree that Matt Bechtel should get serious consideration; played at and graduated from Damien, has been successful at 3 other coaching jobs and has head coaching experience (Colony); plus he’s a younger guy- time for some new blood at Damien.

  • scotty bore as

Damien has 70…Etiwanda can’t seem to get more than a few…….interesting

  • Dam Spar

I hope they choose the right coach soon, they just lost another promising football player to Upland and I heard another might be following.

  • Spartan 03

I think high number of applicants has to do with Dr. Hemenway being Principal. You’re getting ties from both sides, Damien and Bishop Amat. I have heard nothing but great things from the staff of how professional Dr Hemenway is and the way he runs things.

I don’t think the possibility of Damien being moved into an all parochial league is the thing attracting more applicants. They weren’t able to compete in a public school league. I like the move to an all parochial league as it will force them to be more competitive. Either way, I’m encouraged with the number of applications and looking forward to see which direction they go.

My gut feeling is that former La Salle coach and current Amat assistant Ealar Gallagher will get the gig at Damien.

    • D’animal

Your close, but my money is on Tom Salter. Ealar is a great coach, dont know if he could handle running the show.

      • Not So Fast My Friend

Why would Salter leave Upland? He has a good thing going there. Not insulting Damien, but that would be like Matt Logan leaving Centennial to coach at Alta Loma. It’s a build project. At this stage of his coaching career does Salter have it in him to want to build another program?

        • scotty bore as

he said TOM Salter, not Tim

          • Not So Fast My Friend

            Duh lol. Thanks

    • Kennedy Bryant

      NO WAY FREDDIE

  • chivo

My short list : Tom Salter, Tom Monger, Matt Bectle, Gallagher, DiFiori, Verti, Scott Morrison, Bob Baiz, Jr.

    • scotty bore as

scratch off Baiz, Morrison and Monger

      • chivo

Why scratch them, do you know something we don`t.

        • scotty bore as

Morrison had his shot and failed,Baiz is way too comfortable at Rancho and is not not really a believer in parochial schools and their goals/mission and Monger is a bit long in the tooth, this is a young mans gig and there is a ton of work to be done, hence my morning line favorite is Bechtel, if he’s interested, followed by Tom Salter, then the Amat assistants with previous head coaching stints, Verti being the favorite there, he has a close association with Hemenway from his Amat playing and coaching days

          • chivo

            Bore,
So these are just your opinions and not what you know, okay. Well as long as Tom Carroll is still on staff at Damien Scott Morrison will be given another shot, Baiz jr called Tom himself to inquire about the job, so to me he is interested. Tom and Baiz jr father are very good friends. I know for a fact that Monger was called to apply for the job, so to them his teeth are fine.

          • scotty bore as

Tom Carroll, will not be making this decision, trust me on that…..there’s a new regime in place at Damien…..Hemenway will hire his selection…..TC is on his way out, trust me

          • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

Word is that Carroll, justifiably, is being kept in the dark.

I have no clue if Verti applied, but I think he’d be a solid fit and a very good head coach on his second try.

          • scotty bore as

wow.we think similarly on this topic, what would Stanford daddy, FC,big Frank Sparty say?actually, aren’t you the one who commented on donut man in Glendora? with the strawberry donuts? (tried them, loved them) hence the moniker, just like Fred is Mr. Libero…..evidently his all -trib volleyball team had nobody of note to be the libero….or he had no idea there was a libero circa 2007…I’m going with the latter faux pas.

  • Look Close Sparta

My sources say an extremely solid coach by the name of Chris Flores has applied. Chris was the OC at Cathedral a few years back and was a big part of building that program up to a respectable level. Chris comes with a young energetic and well connected staff. He would be a great choice!

  • DHS_PARENT

A quick note. I just spoke with a Damien Insider and the word is Elijah Asante is at the very least going to get an interview his resume according to what I’m told has more than impressed Dr Hemenway and the interview committee.

  • Pasadena Transplant.

My son’s excited. Practice test tomorrow at Bishop. Damien next week. Damien is his first choice. Thanks Lord and Dr. Hemenway for narrowing down the choices.

  • Football Dude

Why isn’t there a list out there of the area’s top coaching prospects? A list with long time coordinators, HC’s looking to move up, best young coaches, etc. with a short explanation for each coach. Aram you should put one together…

  • Kennedy Bryant

I’ve been sworn to secrecy and “I know who is on the short list”…Well really I dont I just wanna start something” but then again I have GREAT sources everywhere.

    • chivo

Kennedy , we may have the same sources, I have three from Damien, no names who have confirmed my list. MONGER, BECHTEL, BAIZ,AMAT GUYS, BONDS, TIM SALTER,OH AND PAREDES.

      • Not So Fast My Friend

        What, no Assante? Lol

  • no-step

Coach Monger was an assistant at Damien in the ’70′s, went to Don Lugo and won a CIF title with the first full class at there, won 2 CIF titles at Chino and had a third appearance in the finals.

  • Footballsnake

Is there any truth to the rumor that a Chaminade coach has applied for the position?

  • AnOutsideTake

Parades, Either Salter brother, A dark horse in a current Amat coach and a”long tooth” as i think someone referred to a more seasoned coach?

  • Pasadena Transplant.

    No news?

  • Dam Spar

I heard that Damien hired or is about hire a guy from the JC ranks.

  • Dam Spar

Damien ever going to hire a coach.

    • AnOutsideTake

Yes. They already did they just dont want to tell you. jk

  • OuttaYourMindTrib

With yet another coaching vacancy locally, they better move quick.

    • AnOutsideTake

With over 70 applicants. Why would they need to feel rushed to make a decision? They have plenty of quality options in the applicant pool i’m sure! They don’t want to make a poor or rushed choice. Dr Hemenway is very well seasoned and has more knowledge and experience in this than most of the principals in the SGV combined. We will probably hear something soon. Don’t the catholic school have testing for new students soon? They will likely want to beat that day.

      • OuttaYourMindTrib

You never want to make a rash decision. But at the same time, quantity ≠ quality. I’m hiring someone now, out of 103 applicants, 4 were qualified and only 2 are a good fit, and one is exceptional. Just so happens those two have other(verified) offers. I can’t really afford to sit on this for more than a few days at the most now can I?

If you think there are more than a few great candidates in that 70…

        • AnOutsideTake

Good Luck with your hire. I would say out of those 70+, at least 10 were quality enough to get a follow up call and or phone interview and half of those were/will be interviewed in person. Just from who I know were interested in the position enough to apply. Id say 8 could give a valid argument for the position. Just the rumor mill alone named 10-15 possible decent candidates. Im sure we will hear the answer before the weeks end.
