Strong field assembled for passing tournament May 18 at Charter Oak …

They get started earlier and earlier … Charter Oak football coach Lou Farrar announced this week that his program will host an eight-team passing tournament on May 18, that includes local powers Monrovia, La Habra and Chino Hills in addition to the Chargers.

The rest of the field is South Hills, Diamond Ranch, Rosemead and Glendora.

Each team will be guaranteed four games and there will be an elimination round toward the end of the day to determine a champion.

Aram’s take: It beats the hell out of spring practice. Only thing that concerns me is baseball guys not being available, but so be it. This will offer an early look into what these top area teams are working with heading into the summer circuit.

baseball will be over May 9,the regular season, I am on the edge of my seat, anxiously awaiting who Donut Man crowns at the fish bowls new number 1 team, based of a touch ,passing scrimmage…..

  • SGV_FOOTBALL

Congrats to Eric Ortiz who was named to the All State Football Third Team Defense. Calhisports dot com they posted it today.

I believe I saw other players from the SGV make the medium and small all state list.

    • Valley Athletics

Congrats to him . He is the only valley player getting recognized in the division that counts . These are legit top players being named to the state team .

  • Desert Rat

MAY!!! For crying out loud…give the kids a break.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Year round baseball. Year round basketball. And you’re squawking over a passing league scrimmage in May? lol The scouts have already come and are practically gone by then.

      • OuttaYourMindTrib

Baseball is literally a walk in the park compared to the rigors of football. Physically those kids could and do play 3, 4 and 5 games in a day. Just try that with football.

Basketball, those guys will play 2 games in a day, sometimes more as well.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

yeah, but the SGV puts out way more College players in Baseball. I think that’s why SGV kids focus on year round baseball. With Bonita, Damien, BA, Monrovia, Glendora, West Co, TC, Los Altos, Alhambra, Arcadia and all the other really good schools, Baseball is big …I know I am fan of SGV baseball.

        • Not So Fast My Friend

I totally agree with you. In May, this tournie shouldn’t be a problem.

  • GP AKA Green Machine

This should be fun. It means nothing, But it will give us something to yap about….Congrats to G vontray Ainsworth and Northwestern Bound Brett Walsh for making all state!

    • no-step

I disagree that passing league means nothing. IMHO those leagues are a tremendous tool for the upcoming seasons and beyond. Many states have huge tournaments with championships and playoff games in passing league competition. Even with teams that are not pass heavy, defensive personnel receive training and valuable practice in pass defense. I think the importance of this learning can’t be overemphasized.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Passing league mean nothing… Just like preseason wins mean nothing. How many Passing league tourneys did long beach poly, Mater Dei win or St JB win….Especially if your not a passing team. The team winning all the passing league tourney never wins…the teams that are working the buts off in the weight room normally win. That hold’s true from the pac 5 to Midvalley. I am not saying don’t go out and compete, but with track and baseball season in full swing…It’s just not that important. QB’s all across the southland will be throwing 90 mph fastball while the back ups make it look like so and so school is not that good. I am just saying.

        • no-step

I agree that it means nothing score wise, or championship wise, or as a predictor for the season. I was saying that it is, I think, a valuable teaching/coaching tool, given the state of spread formation type of offenses we see around here.

          • New York

Spread offense is not about passing as much as creating more running lanes for a fast team to be a larger and more physical team.

          • no-step

Spread is a formation. There are many different offenses that play from that formation.

          • New York

Agreed. A running QB is a large part of most successful spreads…how does that happen in passing league?

          • no-step

Agreed. I was replying to YOUR comment.

          • New York

Well I was originally replying to your suggestion that the prevalence of spread formation type of offenses make passing leagues even more relevant today.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

What is the pass if you can set it up with the run. If you look at the patriots, they may not run a lot, but they do, and they depend on the quick 3-5 yard pass along with miss tackles to substitute for running. In passing league the whistle blows those plays dead. I am just saying…

          • no-step

There are other aspects to passing league besides throwing and catching. Timing i.e. R-4 system. Route concepts or passing tree (or perhaps both). Concepts on the front side and trees on the backside. Many other things that coaches want to look at. Most lay people don’t realize the importance of passing league.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Really is that why MVL can’t Win a tourney anywhere, but they have two QB’s who broke state records…on the flip side, CO would whip everyone in the sgv in a passing league, but can’t get a pass off in the inland game…Really yeah passing league really puts people over the top…

          • no-step

As I said. Most lay people don’t understand the importance of passing league.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I don’t know what you are saying…you get more work from one on ones’s than you do from a 7 on 7…because a guy can win the job during the summer session and lose it 1 day into full contact hell week practice..

          • no-step

Coaches evolve their systems. Some new things are tried Some are kept, some are discarded, some are modified. Passing offenses are “tweaked”, formations are changed or adjusted while others are eliminated. Post tournament staff studies are evaluated and much of this goes to perhaps changing or altering their pass protection. This is why head coaches need to be experts in X’s and O’s, and why defense is not simple. Consider…if passing league means nothing, why are so many coaches involved it them?

          • New York

I think timing is hindered by practicing without pads, just like a longsnapper practicing without his full gear. I think it might be a good opportunity for QBs and receivers to develop the nuances of their audibles and hot reads, to an extent.

        • Not Since 1995

it means nothing if you already know that you’re gonna get your a$$ handed to you by everyone of the teams that CO has invited. You, Monrovia, have no shot at winning 1 game at this tournament…! And you already know it….!
Better sing up for that Basset “all world” passing tournament in late May or the Ribet Academy “king” of the passing tournaments in early June…! You’ll need it or your ego will be somewhere in the one of the gutters on Foothill…!
Go shine your ring GP. We in the SGV all know where you got them…!
BTW, Excelsior wants a rematch for the 8-man Championship…!

      • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

ding ding ding. no-step is correct. and thats why farrar is doing this. story coming …

        • GP AKA Green Machine

No, he did this to beat up on some local schools to make CO look good….This will not help them against RC, or any of the inland schools. if that was the case, he would have invited some of the bigger schools….If he did invite the big boys and they did not accept, it’s because it;s not important to them especially this early. Now something like this may help lil ol Monrovia, which is always trying to get exposure, but it does not help CO. Why do you think Upland went MIA at the the 3 way toss a BA last year? They easily would have been the best team there. Passing league is just not that important because there is no line there, you can’t run the ball, and how much timing do you really get….when there is no pressure…It’s fun, but if you missed the entire passing league circuit, it would not kill your program.

          • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

beat up on local schools when his starting QB will likely be out, assuming the baseball teams makes the playoffs?

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Exactly why I say passing league is not important…If everyone is not there…especially your starting QB and or track guys…what timing are you developing? Other Schools will have baseball players missing…so really who are we kidding…It’s not even the same game.. for some schools a 5 yard slant to a talented WR could go 80 yards. In passing league, that same play is whistled dead because it’s two hand touch… I am just saying.

          • SGV_FOOTBALL

What!!! First you guys want to schedule better teams, know when passing league starts just passing league and you are already complaining about playing better teams and about CO inviting Monrovia to the tournament LOL

Ask Maddox if passing league is not important? Then post his response, I want to hear his opinion of not have a passing league tournament all summer!

          • GP AKA Green Machine

See that’s your problem…I said it helps Monrovia because it gets them a chance to go up against athletes which are comparable or better than them…For CO they play in the inland where they see better players than the guys they got. Monrovia should be the worse team in the field, if CO has a session with say Alemany, Upland, Chino Hills, BA, Poly, SJB Etc.. Now that would be a strong field for CO. They invited 3 league teams they already beat….and several Lower Division schools. The Bonita Air tourney Helps out Bonita, because they are not the best team there. Really, if CO is that much ahead of the rest of the SGV as stated, this field is not going to get them over the hump. But on the flip side of this, you see that Monrovia has benefited from playing up in events like this. What Monrovia has do for progression and what CO has to do for progression in the inland are two different things. So yes I think i am right

  • New York

Passing league is like playing touch-rugby. It gives everyone a false sense of where they are. I would argue that QBs and WR’s timing is actually hindered because of passing league and the false sense of who can throw a ball without shoulder pads and a helmet on and who can actually catch balls thrown to them when they are not wearing any gear to hinder them.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

And they know they are not going to get hit…

      • New York

Exactly. How about the center hiking a ball with or without all that gear on as well? Maybe it is good practice for the coaches to be involved with game-type situations.

  • Not Since 1995

SGV Passing League Champion = DIVISIOIN 10 football in CIF.

Monrovia, Cracker Jack Box rings from division 11.5 = 8 man football in Palm Desert…! Is Rosemead not available…? What about Arcadia…?

Monrovia people already know that they are gonna get their collective A$$es handed to them at this tournament…!
Who do they think they’re gonna compete with? Diamond Ranch, South Hills, Glendora…? Nevermind Chino Hills or Charter Oak…
    La Habra…?
Heh…heh! Heh…heh! Heh…heh! Monrovia, don’t make the drive…! Its a long and hot way to go just to see your boys handled like the South Central Covina Convicts…!

    • GP AKA Green Machine

Not Since.. Didn’t I tell you that you are going to have to come up with clever name….before you attempt to diss the Green… You know we are the Craziest bloggers.. your act does not phase us. you should stick to picking on BA or something…

  • Not So Fast My Friend

The thing about passing league tournie’s is it’s great work on timing for QBs and WRs and it’s good practice for DBs. LBs learn to move in space and work on rerouting underneath routes. Besides that, there’s little to offer.

The other thing it does is provide some observers a false sense of pending success. Winning a passing league tournie doesn’t guarantee having a successful season. Losing a passing league tournie doesn’t mean your team is going to suck either.

Enjoy it for what it is and nothing more.
