UPDATED: Troy Thomas takes over at Crespi a day after Mack resigns …

A day after Jon Mack resigned as varsity football head coach at Crespi, the school replaced him with former head coach Troy Thomas, who left Servite to return to his former job.

Mack was 23-9 in those three seasons. There was speculation shortly after the 2012 season that he would not return, but that was put to rest. Crespi is going through administrative changes at the highest level.

Prior to coaching at Crespi, Mack had a strong run at St. Bonaventure.

Aram’s take: Well, news changes fast. This had to be in the works, which is probably the obvious statement of the day. Mack retires one day, Thomas is hired the next. Ooooohhh weeee. I’m trying to figure out what this means for Crespi and the Serra League … and even Bishop Amat on some levels. And who’s gonna go for the Servite job? Or should I say “who’s not?”. Ball’s in Servite’s court now to make a big splash.

Rumor is headed back to Ventura County to Santa Clara. Is that what you hear too? Probably good news for ND, Alemany, and other local Valley schools that might pick up some players. But really, their Serra League performance has been below expectations (1 playoff appearance in past 5 seasons?) for the talent they produce ( as evidenced by a great # of signees.)

Love to hear the Guru chime in when the time is right

  • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

Yep, they did underachieve, but they also need relief. They’ve made a huge jump over the past decade or so and clearly it’s gone too far. But in some sorta Catholic/Private league or division, maybe they’ll slightly better.

    • jcaz

Dude, here you go again with “relief.” As if that is somehow going to change things. Look, not everyone in every league is going to make the playoffs each and every year. In the trinity league, you only get three teams to the dance, but if you don’t happen to make it each and every year, do you then start to ask for relief ?
Well, what about Amat ? You’ve been hitting themhard as of late. They’ve made the payoffs in the Pac5 every year so far under this current coaching staff, yet your still making an argument that they need relief ?
Crespi is going to do just fine, and your right Joe, I too am wondering about the Guru’s take in all of this..

      • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

If I’m saying Amat needs relief because it is making the playoffs and not winning, then of course I would say Crespi needs relief because it’s not making the playoffs at all.

Look, you act like “making the playoffs” is some big deal. It’s a FIVE-TEAM league!!! And regardless, SOMEBODY has to make it. In Amat’s case, they’re losing playoff games whether they’re the No. 4 seed in the division and playing at home against a third-place team or whether they’re an at-large and playing on the road.

They bumped Los Alamitos for the same thing. I was at the meeting. I heard the Los Alamitos AD plead his case and CIF picked and chose its rebuttals. He said their struggles didn’t go back too far. CIF said “You want to point at the past, well don’t bother, we only go back two years”. Why isn’t Amat held to the same standard?

Look at ALL the other sports programs at Amat. They all play in lower divisions and just about every one of them is having postseason success. Baseball. Softball. Girls hoops. Girls soccer. Heck, even boys hoops has been to the semis twice in recent years. Why is football any different? Because you won a CIF title in 1995?

I will never apologize for being realistic.

Your analogy of high school hc’s as vultures is thoughtless at best and downright stupid at worst. If a good opening appears they are not picking at rotting bones. The coach that is gone apparently has his reputation intact and will move on and any coach that would desire to challenge himself with a better spot is certainly anything but a vulture. Your comment really exposes how this paper feels about high school football coaches. You may say I’m making a mountain out of a molehill but I doubt many if any hc’s would.

    • Fatilgian

No Aram has no ethics and or class. Fact.

    • jcaz

Well put, but I wonder if Harry Welch would ever be interested in the job eh ? He’s an Ex Crespi guy

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=732306017 Frank Strazzulla

would you want to leave a job 5 minutes walk from your house in Coto de Caza where you live near your daughter and will coach your grandkid to go work in the Valley? :)

  • Valley Athletics

Is it confirmed ? Last week sondheimer wrote that rumors where being spread about crespi coach leaving and crespi having to forfeit some games from last year . The article said it was false and that it was other schools posting in blogs to deter parents on not sending there kids to crespi . Sondheimer reported that rumors where false .

    • Valley Athletics

Just read it on sondheimers blog . He looks dumb reporting the rumors where false last week .

      • Not So Fast My Friend

I don’t think Sondheimer looks dumb. It’s hard to verify whether or not a rumor is valid. And being a reporter, your job is to get the story out. Trying to verify the validity of coaching rumors is trying to swim with your eyes open in mud. Good luck with that. I’d just as soon post what I’m hearing and retract it later than not say a word and miss the big fish. Thomas leaving Servite is a big fish.

Friar City Football has been on pins and needles all weekend waiting for the other shoe to drop. These guys all have images the want to protect and making sure nobody jumped the gun was important to all concerned.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Of course they have images to protect. They all have a job to do too. Sondheimer is no different. The guy does a great job covering high school sports and has been for years. It’s tough for him because he’s practically the only one (if not THE only one) covering high school athletics for the LA Times with any consistency.

We won’t even discuss the impact of social media. In the past a reporter had the time, absent editorial pressures, to sit on a story while he verified it’s accuracy. However, given today’s 10 minute news cycle (lol), they can’t afford to do that, less they end up playing catch up. And for any reporter, when you’re constantly playing catch up, you might as well start looking for new work.

Again, I said this early last season there were rumbles going on in Friarsville as it related to Thomas and the issues at Servite. That said, I wasn’t surprised that he left.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Oso-Viejo/100001718155340 Oso Viejo

Troy Thomas, out at Servite and in at Crespi???

  • SGV_FOOTBALL

I heard the scouting Guru is the front runner to take over at Crespi!!!!

    LOL

  • Zapruder

All off-season The Guru has been very clear that Mack would not leave Crespi…what happened? The Guru has an opinion on everything (just look at his Twitter page)…hope he doesn’t hold back on what is happening over there.

    • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

I’m trying to get him on here … but he’s gone quiet.

  • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

    Amat 73,

No sense in going round and round. I have my opinion, others have theirs. But when CIF re-divisions every two years, they look at how teams/leagues have done in the playoffs for the past two years. They say they don’t consider any data further back than that, but that’s not necessarily true. If you only consider postseason performance, there’s just nothing to say that Amat belongs in the Pac-5. Not talking about Sept or Oct, I’m talking postseason only. Just making the playoffs is not an argument I buy. Because if they put the Rio Hondo League in the Pac-5, guess what, they’d also get three teams (or two) in the playoffs.

    • http://twitter.com/JoeAmat Joe Amat

Are we really willing to simple use playoff “wins” to determine whether a school belongs in a division or not? Football is not like some other sports where they have a 32 team bracket and actually “seed” a little deeper than 4 spots. In football, playoff brackets are based on there “formula” and must follow certain rules for a teams placement to avoid league opponents, etc.

There was a period of about 6 years where Mater Dei’s only playoff wins were against teams like Cabrillo, Colton, and Long Beach Jordan. Can you really count that as a more “successfull” playoff run than someone who might lose to an eventual champion in the first round?

Whether you belong or not has to do with way more than just playoff wins

      • jcaz

You took the words right out of my mouth.

        • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

In the absence of wins, you argue that other things matter. I’m arguing with a buncha homers, who are not thinking clearly because their heart is involved. You guys truly are great fans. Your fanaticism for Amat is second to none. But we’re going in circles again. You have your takes, and I have mine. Let’s leave it at that.

          • http://twitter.com/JoeAmat Joe Amat

Adam, you know better than to call me an unbalanced fanatic. You need too back to the beginning of your blog and check some archives if your memory is going. If its bad you know I’ll say so – and did. Generated some hate (and hits) – so, yes, your welcome. Not unbalanced just based on facts and history. As always. As I say – look it up.

You said yourself “They say they don’t consider any data further back than that, but that’s not necessarily true”.
Why would you argue the opposite?

Did St John Bosco need “relief” during their playoff drought? Does Orange Lutheran need relief now? How about Servite before Thomas? AD you mention Crespi’s big jump – but neglect the fact they made a big drop from the Big5 first.

How did that work out for them upon their return?

          • http://twitter.com/JoeAmat Joe Amat

            Sorry ARAM. damn autocorrect (Adam?)

          • jcaz

Whoa there…… just a minute Cowboy.

Ive told you time and time again that im a honk, but not a homer. True, I love the (as a friend of mine likes to say) “Lanceritos,” But when they “F” up, they “F” up !!

Fact is, im not very happy at all with the current coaching staff because of their inability to get past the first round, of the playoffs (each and every year) and also because (in my eyes anyways) they dont seem to want to do what it takes to win.

Well guess what ? With the addition of coach Tomas at Crespi means that there’s a new sherriff in town, and if they dont start getting quality kids from Pasadena or even an unnamed running back…Hint hint….real soon, then they ain’t making the playoffs this year.

Look, ND has a resurgent program. Alemany is the cream of the crop and now Crespi ? Sure, you got Loyola to kick around, but with only three possible qualifiers ?? OMG !!

Truth be told the Amat staff is probably in deep doo doo right about now, and ill bet they’re sweating bullets realizing that its gonna be much much harder to get to the “dance” than whats its been so far.

So, when you say that the homers arent looking at this realistically because Amat needs relife, then thats just plain silly dude !

Having said that Aram, on more than one occasion ive actually agreed with you. But sometimes….YIKES !!!

          • jcaz

See Aram…you got us all in a dizzy just now Ha ha ha…LOL

    • AMAT 73

      Aram,
You agree Crespi underachieved . If they did then how can you gauge they need relief ? Was your expectation of them that they could win the Serra ? . Or was it they have the horses to contend this season for a PAC 5 title ?. And where do you put them ?? In the Mission ? They did beat Alemany who many on the blog have high on their list as a top PAC-5 team . The base was there ( 6-10 D-1 players depending on who you listen to ) but they hurt themselves quite a bit on the field . With Tomas would you still give them relief , or give them a shot in the Serra and PAC 5 ???? By the way I never mentioned AMAT in my post , why you chose to go there who kows as my question to you was why you felt Crespi not AMAT should get relief . As jcaz mentioned we beat Crespi and most of the time we play Crespi we do , look it up , as JA says .

  • Valley Athletics

Times reporting Thomas is new crespi coach.

  • jcaz

And dont forget that just a few years ago Crespi made a deep run. BTW, why was it that your Crespi guy was so upset about the fact that Amat beat them anyway ? Amats beaten way better teams than Crespi during the regular season and has even beaten Crespi a time or two in the past. How funny

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Last season I posted that Troy Thomas wasn’t long at Servite. I cited a friend of mine who coaches against him in the OC that heard a lot of rumbles and grumbles coming from the house of the Friars. If I recall I mentioned he was thinking of stepping down. A few posters went postal about what I said. Well lookee here. Thomas leaves to go back home to Crespi.

Thomas leaving for Crespi has more to do with Servite and the issues as opposed to Crespi being his “dream job.”

    I’m just saying.

  • reality

CIF”S message is clear. If the schools entire programs do too good they are going to be moved up(Bonita) If they dont they are going to be moved down(Amat) What the football team does on its own don’t matter

    • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

Actually, not true. CIF picks and chooses when to use that. Case in point, CO and South Hills getting moved to the Sierra League and Inland Division. I said the very same thing and so did the schools — “only the football programs are kicking butt, not the rest of the sports” and a CIF official said back to me “come on, you know and I know that football is what everything is based on.”

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Football generates the $$$. if you getting your but kicked every year…attendance may go down and the community loses interest. It would be wise to get in the correct division, one you can compete in. In Mtown’s case, it’s time we move up because fans do get bored…In other teams cases fans get bored with losing too.

  • Valley Athletics

Thomas is leaving behind a very good junior to be class . I can see some of these players leaving to mater dei , St. John boscos and maybe Santa margarita . Will we see players choosing Crespi over notre dame , oaks Christian or alemany . Going to get interesting this summer.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

A few will bail. It depends on whose coming in or if they promote from within. Insider, kids will stay. Outsider, kids will probably bail. From what I’ve heard three have been looking elsewhere.

  • Jastrab

Wonder if Taylor might transfer his son from Servite to Amat….looks like a good RB as a freshman and I would love to see that 32 with a Taylor in it again!!!

    • Royal Blue Thunder

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but #32 belonged to Eric Bienemy which, I’m sure, Amat retired. However, I’m not sure what “retiring a number” means at the high school level.

      • AMAT 73

Same as any other level ,the number is no longer issued in the particular sport it was retired in . Go into the HOF and you can see all the jerseys hanging on the wall that have been retired .

        • GP AKA Green Machine

          Wassup 73!

          • AMAT 73

            GP,
What going on in M’Town . Will we be seeing Scoby wear the white and green soon ?????????????????

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I am not sure…However, we really don’t view players like Ainsworth, Scooby, and Trey Sidney as transfers…it’s more like prodigal Sons returning home. All sold on greener pastures elsewhere, but the only thing green is Mtown…Kelly Green!!! Every one that scooby knows has a ring and offers dating back to the all those Old Players who went to CO..If he was to suit up in the Green, he will get his ring, and if his credits can be salvaged, he would get a offer as welll. How about Holy Bishop…is this year’s team going to win league or make playoffs? I know it’s really hard in the Serra and Pac5

      • Valley Athletics

Good trivia question . I remember pernell being 32 and don’t remember bienemys number . I think it might of been 32 also.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

No one is good enough to have their # retired…eventually all the good numbers are going to be gone… 21, 34. 32, 10, 12… ETC

        • AMAT 73

          GP,
Well numbers 10 and 25 sure were good enough. Some of their records still stand today . A few others also hang in the HOF , not only for football , that deserved the honor at AMAT .Maybe you don’t get those types at Monrovia but at AMAT , we’ve had our fair share. It’s a high standard that’s not handed out like stickers on helmets like some schools do so there are plenty of numbers left to go around .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

No, we don’t get those kinds at Monrovia. It looks like BA won’t retire a number ever again….

          • AMAT 73

            GP,
Is that hopeful thinking on your part. We have a couple freshman kids who just might make it to that level . Anyways it’s for the comittees at AMAT to decide and by your postings on AMAT I don’t think you would retire JC’s jersey . HAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!!!

          • GP AKA Green Machine

            not even him! lol

          • Not Since 1995

Bishop Nomas will not win a league game in 2013…! As sure as I am that the pope’s name is Francis. NoMas has no talent in 2013 that can compete with the Speed of ND, size of Alemany, or coaching of Loyola and Crespi. This will be the worse Hags season yet.

          • AMAT 73

So what do you think the hiring of Thomas at Crespi does to ND and possibly Alemany ? I saw you already penciled them in as Serra league champs . Are you officially off the Alemany bandwagon and now on to Crespi’s cart with possibly the guru ????

  • New York

    Aram,
Is Coach Thomas the relief that Crespi needed? This will be interesting to watch. Good luck to all involved.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Yes on one and yes on the other. Thomas needed a change of scenery.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

        it’s his old high school…

        • New York

He left his old high school for Servite just a few years ago. Remember Thomas was the head coach at Crespi already.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I did not know that..thanks NY.

        • Not So Fast My Friend

GP, yup, but he still needed a change of scenery. Coaching at Servite was becoming difficult.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

OC has Servite, SM MD, OLu Jserra, all competing for private school prospects. Crespi has competition in their area, but not as much….Plus Thomas is a winner.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

GP, I don’t mean difficult as in hard to win. I mean difficult as in with increased winning comes increased expectations. Dude, I’ve seen enough of your posts to know that you can read between the lines on that one. lol.

    Brian Barnes to Servite??

NoMas will be last in the Serra. Blue and Yellow are the men in last place…!

    Not In 2013 Either…

    • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

Right, because Thomas really made Hagerty look like a water boy last year. Servite could barely get a snap off. One of the most pathetic showings I’ve ever seen and I’ve covered the worst leagues and divisions to the very best.

      • Not Since 1995

Ooooooh! You told me, huh Aram…! I didn’t know your rag covered Florida football…! You guys also covering Ohio, No Cal and Texas…? Heh…heh! Heh…heh! Heh…heh!

I’ll accept your apology sometime after Thanksgiving…!

    • GP AKA Green Machine

You are right about BA, but Crespi won’t win the Serra, and they will be one of the teams BA beats in league. However, you need to refine your act for 2013…It’s not funny anymore. And what’s sad is you thought you could bully me…haha…you are a maggot
