The SGV’s top QB Koa Haynes and Bishop Amat in action this weekend at Claremont Tournament …

VAMAT

The much-anticipated unveiling of Bishop Amat will take place this weekend in the Claremont Tournament, and then the Lancers go on their dead period before returning later in June at the Bonita Air Assault. So if you wanna check them out, now’s your chance for the near future.

Anyway, the Lancers will be in action starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday on Field 4 against Valley View in the Claremont Tournament.

This will be a good opportunity to see which of the Super Sophs are up with the big team and getting reps and where. QB Koa Haynes should be in action, but I’ve also heard he may be taking SATs. And wide receiver Isaac Archer, a Damien transfer, has a chance to be a special player.

Other locals out at Claremont this weekend include El Monte, La Salle, La Serna, West Covina and El Rancho. Here are the pools:

Pool A

Claremont, Rialto, El Rancho and Pacifica.

Pool B

JW North, El Monte, Valley View and Bishop Amat

Pool C

Upland, Paloma Valley, West Covina and La Salle

Pool D

Garey, West View, La Serna and Santa Margarita

  • GP AKA Green Machine

    Top 5 QB’s

    1. Palmer-La Serna

    2. Haynes-BA

    3. Diebold-Bonita

    4. Brown-CO

    5. Josh Avila-SD

    • Valley Athletics

Can’t forget Peterson at diamond bar . Top 5 for sure.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Well put him at 5 an Avila at 6 because San Dimas doesn’t throw.

        • Valley Athletics

I don’t think Aram is talking about the tribune coverage area . So if its only the sgv , Palmer would not be in the top 5 valley Qbs .

          • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

            Oh yes he would.

          • Valley Athletics

So you consider la Serna in the San Gabriel valley .

          • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

Nope, but La Serna is in the Whittier Daily News coverage zone, which puts them in the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group — Tribune, Star-News, Whittier Daily News — which means we/I cover them.

          • Valley Athletics

So the heading should say . Two of the top sgv Qbs .

          • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

            It could I suppose …

          • GP AKA Green Machine

If he is not then who is? Have you seen this kid play?

          • Valley Athletics

I wasn’t debating who is top quarterback . In my post I was just stating that Aram was probably not including all the tribune family papers coverage area . Aram and Fred usually say when it’s the sgv or all encompassing sgv area .

    • WCDan

Tough call on Palmer and Haynes, but since Haynes plays in a much tougher division and I believe he had a good year in that division, I would think he would get the nodd, but with that said, Palmer is a legit leader. Seem to remember hearing good things about Brown, not sure if he should be below or above Diebold. Remember Diebold as a soph, he was quite green as most sophs would be, as a junior I didn’t hear much about him, and in the Bonita/West Co game it was Reggie Turner and his 5 TD’s that stir my memory banks.

      • 12th man

        Good Call~ Agree!

      • AMAT 73

        WC Dan ,
Good point on remembering Turner . Same with Koa , he’s a big piece of the puzzle ,but still a piece . Others must step up to utilize Koa’s talents . Don’t think he should be at the top right now but you know Aram ( hits ) , but as we get closer to the season he will be right there . You have quite a cast of returning QBs in the SGV such as Palmer, but the season is just around the corner and if Koa makes the progression as he should , he will be in that debate all season long .

        • GP AKA Green Machine

I have him # 2. If BA Makes the playoffs this season, Koa will be the reason. He would be the #1 QB no doubt. My Concern with Palmer and Haynes is Height. If both were in the 6’1 range, they both would have offers from Major Universities. As small as Palmer is, I would think APU should be looking at this guy.

Haynes would probably get a look from a D1AA schools like Montana, Deleware, and or Ivy league schools. Both are really good.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

I understand that Haynes plays in the Pac 5 but remember he had Andrews(D1A) and Cook(D1AA) to throw to, and he had Blue(D1A) toting the rock…I don’t think Palmer had that kind of Supporting cast, so it balances out…plus Palmer beat Westlake which helps.

        • Royal Blue Thunder

It does not “balance out.” It is true that Haynes had some great players to throw to but he (as well as his supporting cast) also faced Pac-5 defenses….something that is completely foreign to Palmer and La Serna in general. You are comparing 2 QBs…one that plays Pac-5 competition and the other that plays teams like Pioneer and California lol. The best team that La Serna faced was Norco who smashed La Serna 39-16. Norco lost to Crenshaw, Alemany, Corona Centennial, and Vista Murrieta…Again, La Serna and Bishop Amat play at entirely different levels….Koa Haynes plays at an entirely different level.

          • The truth and nothing but…

Well said, I completely agree. Fans from Monrovia will never know what the competition level is like in D1 and D2 where every week is a war, they are too busy sticking out their chest beating South Pas, Temple City, and Blair.

          • observantcat

It’s funny you say that when D1 College level is Much, Much, harder to compete as a player than any D1 high school level team. Great players can play at any level depending on their athleticism buy I guess from what you are saying that high school experience is the final conquest?… We are great athletes and scholars.

        • WCDan

You also have to figure that those D1 & D1A recievers that Haynes throws too, are being covered by D1 & D1A defensive backs, and you have D1 & D1A D Ends and OLB’s coming at you,yet at the same time you are being protected by D1 & D1A linemen, so I guess it could balance out.
I think where you’ve got to give the Pac 5 QB the edge is that the overall whole field of play is better at the Pac 5 level, than at the Southeast level, and in general that would also include the QB. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Haynes is better than Palmer, but all else being equal, I would say Haynes would get extra points for competing in a much tougher division.

          • WCDan

Just after posting I read a little further and came across Royal Blues post and realized my post was totaly unnecessary as Royal Blue beat me to the punch and pretty much said the same thing.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Yea, and Palmer beat Westlake without the talent.

    • Valley Scout

Amat doesn’t post stats but I remember seeing Haynes numbers a few months ago and his yardage and td totals were better then Palmer while playing 3 fewer games then Palmer, in addition Haynes had 300 or 400 yards rushing while Palmer had virtually 0 yards rushing. I’m also guessing that you didn’t see Diebold play this year. The kid had a negative td/int ratio with only 11 td’s and 12 ints while only throwing for 1,700 yards over 11 games. He also had negative yardage in the rushing department.

      • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

Palmer had 300 yards rushing and three TDs. He’s very mobile and has guided his team to CIF championship games in his two varsity seasons.

        • Valley Scout

My bad, was looking at another kids stats. However, 300 yards over 14 games is only about 21 yards per game which is nothing to write home about.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

He is not a running QB… He keeps plays alive and moves the chains when needed. Similar to Haynes…

          • WCDan

Very true in reguards to Palmer.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

I have seen all these qb’s… Haynes is # two because he has less wins, and less years on Varsity…Palmer is proven. Regarding Diebold, He does turn it over, but there not many qb’s returning this year compared to last year’s field. Tanner has all the tools and should be up for big senior year. Even if Avilla does hand the ball off…he led his team to the Semis…that deserves a ranking.

        • Tom Cobham

Diebold has no business being mentioned as a top QB in the SG Valley. Like valley scout mentioned his Int to TD ratio was terrible, not what you would except from a two year starter. Also I went to almost every Bonita game last year and most if not all his TD throws were to Turner in the back filed and Turner would use his great ability and turn them into TD’s. NOT what I would call a great QB reading coverages and pushing the ball into coverage up the field. Look at his stats and you will see they have gone down each year. With almost the entire offensive line graduating, his numbers will only continue to drop and his int continue to will rise along with his negative rushing yards. Negative yards by a QB kills drives and field postion along with the lines moral. The reason for the negative yard is because he is afraid of contact and getting hit, look at some of the photos on maxpreps and look at his eyes it looks like a mack truck is coming down on him. How can a two year starter have no rushing TD’s? Regarding he has all the tools, i dont think you could be further from the facts. The fact is he has never had the tools. Just because you are 6-0 and Daddy wants you to play Qb doesn’t mean you should. It takes a special player to play QB, not a big donor’s kid. The best returning varsity QB his the Diamond Bar QB.

          • The truth and nothing but…

            Great post!

    • The truth and nothing but…

How’s Avila in the convo when SD doesn’t pass and all he will do this year is hand off the rock to Peyton and Myorga? Saw Diebold last season wasn’t impressed. How is La Mirada’s Dillman not on your list when he’s the nation’s no. 2 QB class of 2015? Haynes and Palmer belongs and don’t know enough about Brown to comment.

      • Valley Scout

Dillman has yet to play varsity football, his rating is based entirely on speculation due to his size and arm strength. Lets wait and see how he performs in gear at the varsity level.

        • WCDan

Great point on Dillman, which ratings are these? Hard to understand how he could be the #2 rated qb in the nation when he has only played defensive back at the varsity level, as we all know, there is a lot more to being a top qb than size and arm strength.

        • The truth and nothing but…

That’s inaccurate. He’s just a junior next season so he may not have played as many as the juniors and seniors on this list but he played varsity last year.

          • Valley Scout

OK, if you want to get technical, yes he did play Varsity QB last year and threw a whopping 5 passes completing 2 of them for 14 yards. Are those the numbers that you want to hang your hat on while wondering why he isn’t listed as one of the top returning QB’s in the area?

          • The truth and nothing but…

It just shows you are commenting without all the facts. Dillman played the entire game vs Artesia as a QB. The kid has got around 15 offers, I can see 1 or 2 scouts being wrong but all 15 can’t be wrong. Yes, they may see an athlete in him but that just helps his case playing the QB position. How many pocket passer do you see in today’s college football?

          • Valley Scout

Played the entire game and only threw 5 passes, completing 2 for only 14 yards? Not very impressive. College offers are always based on projected ability not necessarily how good you are as a High School Player.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Valley scout is right….He has not had a complete year as a qb.. The offers come from his ability as a ATH. He may be after the first 5-6 weeks.

        • The truth and nothing but…

A QB’s ability isn’t judge by the team’s success. At a minimum, to be consider as an elite QB, he has to throw the football and Avila doesn’t throw the ball. If we are considering their rushing stats than group them with the RBs.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

After the guys I name in my top 5… name another guy?

          • The truth and nothing but…

If there isn’t five guys don’t put a name just to have a name. What’s wrong with having only two or three names if there are only two or three who are legit?

  • Aaron

I know Medrano is happy his QB isn’t play baseball right now.

  • 12th man

Haynes should be the #1 QB in the Valley!! He’s already considered one of the elite QB”s in the pac5 & is highly regarded in the Southern Section..

    (LA Times Article)

Let the debate begin about who’s the No. 1 quarterback in Southern California. The candidates: Brandon Dawkins, Westlake Village Oaks Christian; Ricky Town, Ventura St. Bonaventure; Cade Apsay, Canyon Country Canyon; Chase Forrest, Mater Dei; Ian Fieber, Mission Viejo; Robert Webber, Corona Centennial; Damion Wright, Fontana Jurupa Hills; Koa Haynes, La Puente Bishop Amat; Josh Rosen, Bellflower St. John Bosco….

    Eric Sondheimer..

    • The truth and nothing but…

I heard the QB from Newhall Hart is pretty good too.

    • Valley Athletics

They forgot brad kaaya who made the elite 11 .

  • The truth and nothing but…

Weak field, Upland and Santa Margarita will easily demolish field and play for the championship. Both these teams may bring their JVs.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

If Upland brought their JV team they would have 170 players on the field instead of 100 kids…and Upland still won’t win their division despite having So much talent… Sad.

      • The truth and nothing but…

Not sure if I would feel embarrass by that if I was Upland, nothing wrong with being right there every year. Coming in third in the SEC is a whole lot better than winning NAIA. Just saying, no punt intended against any division or league.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

No it’s not…who finished 3rd and fourth in NCAA football the last 3 years? I remember them about just as much as the NAIA Champ…

          • Aaron

So you don’t think Upland will ever win a title…it doesn’t always stay at CC…just most years.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I don’t think Upland will win a title in the next 5 years…Besides, the Corona/ Temecula Areas are growing each year. I would imagine that their athletics will continue to improve. Do you see Upland/Rancho winning it?

          • Aaron

If you’re that close and that talented every year, you will get it one year, maybe two years.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

CC and Vista are not degressing…If they take the top teams from their respective leagues, they could compete in the Pac 5 as a new league?

          • Aaron

Apparently you don’t get it…but U High could compete in the PAC-5 as well. Degressing…yeah dictionary man. That don’t hunt.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

but they won’t win it…nor the inland. English lesson # 1…I need a Thesaurus Huh…thanks Aaron..

          • Aaron

I don’t understand why aren’t open to the talent and the coaching that Salter has amassed? It makes no sense. Especially for a team that also sports the Green and White!!!

          • GP AKA Green Machine

CC and Vista are not degressing…If they take the top teams from their respective leagues, they could compete in the Pac 5 as a new league?

          • The truth and nothing but…

Of course Upland coach is not happy playing second fiddle to Vista Murrietta and Corona Centennial the last few years but losing to those two power houses is no embarrassment. If I am a player, coach, or parent from Upland I would have no trouble holding my head up high, much more so than winning it all in D11. BTW, if you still remember APU winning it all in the NAIA back in 1999 than it’s time to get a life, just saying.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Lol…Apu is one of the few local teams which compete in Collegiate athletics. I have friends, and former teammates which were on that team. What’s wrong with remembering them. Upland parents, should hold their heads up High. I am just saying as time goes on no one remembers 3rd or 4th place finishers. People do remember the CIF Champions from every division 1-13 and it’s documented in the CIF record books. So Basically you are saying that Programs that win lower division titles shouldn’t hold their heads high?

          • Valley Scout

FYI – WestCo and Centennial have roughly the same amount of students @ 2,900 while Upland has about 3,700 students.

          • WCDan

            Valley Scout,
It’s more about the demographics than population. A school like CC while having a similar population to West Co, will get many more football type bodies at their school than West Co. To a smaller degree, the same goes with schools like Monrovia or Muir, they may have smaller populations than say a West Co, but they will have just as many athletic football types in their school as does WC so they can get close to a similar level of play.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Thank you for the info…Wow West Co should be in the Central after winning back to back and going to Semis…

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Thank you for the info…Wow West Co should be in the Central after winning back to back and going to Semis…

    • WCDan

You got one right, but it wasn’t Upland, and it wasn’t easy for Santa Margaritta, at least in the championship game it wasn’t easy.

  • disqus_EwzMXwPVzM

Also Christian Lara Santa Fe 935 yards rushing and can throw a football semi finals.

  • Charger

Donavin Washington received his first offer yesterday from Boise State. Ceeee-Ohhhh

    • GP AKA Green Machine

      Nice!!

    • Chad Lee

Will Donavin Washington get carries this year like his frosh season?

  • Valley Athletics

Amat loses to Santa margarita in overtime in the championship game . Got to see a couple good games .amat and Santa margarita looked the best the whole tournament . Alot of good athletes on most of the teams .

    • WCDan

Got there in time to catch the Championship game, Amat has athletes, not sure where this notion came that Haynes has no one to throw to.

      • Valley Athletics

Trey sidney was great all day . Had some highlight catches and a a diving one handed interception that he got up for . Koa was good and so was the back up Qb from the freshman team .got to see la Serna a little bit against north and Santa margarita . Saw some of westco and upland . Uplands Qb transfer through 2 interceptions in a row against westco then the backup Qb came in and got upland the win . Did you notice the 2 westco players having a long conversation with an upland guy, during and at the end of the final amat game?

        • WCDan

VA, No I did not see that, was it an Upland player?
I missed most of the day, I caught part of WC’s last game and saw that WC did not have several of their key players, I was told that they were doing their SAT’s. Suprised if they were in a tight game with Upland, no offense ment to my Bulldogs but Upland must have been playing their subs against WC.
How did La Serna and Frankie Palmer look against Santa Margarita? I was impressed with Amats athleticism and thought for the most part that they drove better and outplayed Santa Margarita, they were up 26 to 12 at one point, then a couple of defensive blown coverages got SM back in the game. In OT I saw SM score first, then Amat responded with a score of their own, and got the ball first for the second OT series only to have SM get a game winning pick.

          • Valley Athletics

It was an adult in his 40s wearing upland gear , I assume he was a coach . But I could be wrong because I did not pay attention to there coaching staff during the game . It was 2 young kids from west co , maybe juniors to be with a mother with them . During the upland westco game , hilsinski was the starter and from what I heard from a parent that it was most of there starters . I think final score was 28-7 . Didn’t look like westco had many seniors . They looked young .
