Santa Margarita beats Bishop Amat in 2OT to win Claremont Tournament …

Pac-5 foes Bishop Amat and Santa Margarita met in the finals of the Claremont Tournament on Saturday and the Eagles needed two overtimes to beat the Lancers, 32-20 32-30, buoyed by a key interception.

FYI, the two teams play each other in the Aug. 30 opener.

Amat beat Claremont to reach the championship game in one of the semifinals while Santa Margarita beat Upland in the other semi.

Aram’s take: When Amat sucks in passing tournaments, it really means nothing because passing tourneys are not the Lancers’ thing. So when Amat has a good showing like today, then you’d better take notice. A great, but early, sign for the Lancers. But hey, when you’ve got one of the best QBs around and some legit prospects around him, what do you expect? Strong start to the circuit for Amat … they’re on dead period now until later this month when they return in the Bonita Air Assault.

  • Valley Athletics

Amat had the game and let Santa margarita get back in the gAme to tie . Up 2 tds . Santa margarita scored on one play when amat put in a small Db that didn’t play much the whole day in trey Sidney’s spot . Then Camargo got burnt also and then all of a sudden they where tied with a minute and thirty seconds left . Amat drove it to 5 yd line but ran out if time . Santa margarita Was very good . Qb was big

    • no-step

So…they let SM back in the game? Why would they do that? Maybe they were just defeated by a better team? Nah…not Bishop Thaddeus!

      • WCDan

I actually thought Amat looked better than SM, VA is right, two blown coverages let SM into the game after Amat had been up by two scores and a pick.

Aram there is a misprint a on the score you have, it was not 32 to 20, the game was tied up until SM got the pick in the 2nd OT. I think picks are worth 2 points, so SM won by two points, not twelve. Hey I know we beefed a little this week Aram, hope you didn’t take it personal, I know you’ve wrote more good things on WC than bad.

32-30, my bad. WCDan, don’t even mention it. Football is a very passion-evoking topic and everyone has lots of feeling behind their argument in the debate.

  • 12th man

Seems like Amat struggles on defense every year! “Nothing New”

    • Valley Athletics

They didn’t struggle . They had some good stops against S.M . 2 plays in regulation let Santa margarita catch up , when they where subbing players in . In earlier games when it was close . Koa came in at safety and did good . Michael Hernandez was not there . Other than those 2 plays and the interception at the end . amat looked solid with there starters in .

      • 12th man

Amat usually has a strong start (2012–2013) they were undefeated until weak 7 when they faced Alemany that’s when the defense got exposed, they ended the season going 2-2 (2011-2010) Started the season at 6-1 until they faced Alemany again..After that loss Amat ended the season 1-3 (2009-2010) They started 8-0 & ended the season going 2-2..In all these league games down the stretch the offense has scored enough points to keep them in the game..The secondary & OLB play has gotten them into trouble in all of these losses & i’m also taking into consideration that Amat had some penalties a few turnovers but mainly the coverage getting burned on second or third & long. The problem for Amat, is they can’t contain a dual threat QB who can run or pass via (Johnny Stanton,Cody Pittman,Vernon Adams) we all know what each one of these QB’s did to the defense..

    • Kurt Stone

Both SM and Amat looked solid. They were definately the best two teams there. Upland was solid also, but SM was the better team. Amat will definately open some eyes come the season opener. I can’t wait once the pads come on, because that is when Amat excels. Imagine the atmosphere when SM comes to Kiefer for game one. Remember that this is only the beginning of summer, so all teams are looking for their identity. I was very pleasantly surprised at the control of Koa Haynes. He looks much developed from the end of last season.

      • 12th man

Playing with pads is a total different beast! Haynes will be scrambling for his life all night. SM,D-line & LB’s aren’t your average normal players. These kids are usually a bit more stacked when it comes to size & strength .Hopefully he can keep them off balance by throwing on the run.

        • Valley Athletics

Yeah agree . They where bigger .but like Aram said they never do good in passing tournament.

  • Real talk

Good to hear Amat is looking good against a quality opponent.

  • Trinity Fan

Don’t get too excited just yet Amat fans. This is a rebuilding Santa Margarita team that lost 10 D1 seniors from last years team including their QB. SM’s strength this season will be in their O-line and a power running game. The QB you saw today is an inexperienced soph.

    • Valley Athletics

He will be a junior and started most of last year .very solid Qb .

    • 12th man

Don’t downplay Kyle Sweet! We all know he did an amazing job when Stanton went down.

    • jcaz

Here we go again. Someone saying a trinity league team isn’t as good as it was last year and that there in a down year, and because of that, Amat isnt playing a very good team this year compared to last. Frankly speaking, who really cares anyway ?

Amat never, and I mean NEVER play’s well in passing league. Frankly speaking, the last time I even went to a passing league game was when Amat and Charter Oak played at South hills High a few years ago, so if they looked halfway good this year, then thats great

      • Royal Blue Thunder

LOL JCAZ! Here we go again, indeed! Every year it’s the same thing. Haters gotta hate.

    • Kurt Stone

I really doubt that Trinity Fan is from the OC. He is just an Amat hater in disguise. He is trying to down play Sm, so when Amat beats them In August he can say that SM is rebuilding. The truth is this SM QB did a great job last year when Stanton went down, and this QB will be the leader and star on the SM team. So good try Trinity Fan, but next time have the balls to post who you really are. Oh, one more thing, isn’t it great Aram that you post an Amat story and you get all this action on the blogs….Love them or hate them, it is always Amat that pulls in the numbers for your paper.

      • http://twitter.com/aramtolegian Aram Tolegian

        Kurt,

I’ve always said that Amat has far and away the best fan base in the SGV. Other schools have some great fans, but not in the same numbers as Amat.

But having said that, this post wasn’t a ploy for hits. I did not make up the fact that Amat played in and did well in a local passing tournament.

This is a very exciting time at Amat as last year’s frosh class starts to make its way to the varsity level, at least some of them. By the time they are juniors and seniors, I expect Amat will be ready to rumble in the Pac-5. It’s going to be fun to watch what happens with this group.

        • jcaz

Hopefully Amat has just as good a quarterback when those kids are ready to step up as they will have this year…….we shall see

          • Valley Athletics

Last year freshmen Qb got some snaps and looked decent . His name is Damien Garcia . He is about 5’10″ and from looking at his footage on hudl he is a dual threat . camargo did not get reps so I don’t know If is a backup also .

          • Royal Blue Thunder

I agree… #7 Damien Garcia looked deadly fast and threw some accurate bombs for a Freshman. I think it would be safe to assume at this point, that he will be the starting QB for Amat in 2014.

        • Kurt Stone

It is crazy how things are. I have three nephews in the SGV. One is going to be a junior at Amat, one a senior at South Hills, and one a sophomore at DBar. All three play football. I love them all, but I’m blown away how different each school is with the way they run their programs. I was blessed with 2 beautiful girls, and bless them, I couldn’t pay them enough to play a sport. They both go to St. Lucy. I make sure I go to all three of my nephews’ games, and I try to stay impartial to them all.

  • yolo

how did damien and lasalle, and west covina do? who played qb for them?

    • Valley Athletics

Damien wasn’t there . Did not see la salle . Westco lost All there pool games .

    • Noobskillme

West Co lost to Upland, Paloma Valley and La Salle… La Salle had key kids out due to SAT’s, and lost to Upland, beat West Co., and played PV tough; losing a tight one.

  • Valley Athletics

Frankly Palmer looked good also. SAw him play jw north which had some athletes . He was able to move the ball well . Lost in double overtime in that game .

  • Trinity Fan

The QB that played yesterday for SM is not the QB that filled in for Johnny Stanton. Kyle Sweet has moved back to wide receiver. The QB that beat Amat yesterday was on the freshman team last season. Don’t get me wrong SM will be a decent team but no where close to the teams they had the last few seasons. They lost 10 D1 starters including all of their defensive backfield.

    • Valley Athletics

He looked very good . Pretty big guy for a sophmore to be .

  • Trinity Fan

K.J. Costello was the SM QB yesterday. He’s about 6’4″ but on the thin side. With three more years to fill out and develop under Coach Welch and Coach Longshore he should be a top recruit by his senior year. There will be some growing pains this season.

    • Valley Athletics

He was not thin . Kid was built .

    • dontbethatguy

I think this kid repeated 8th grade twice…

  • GP AKA Green Machine

Has Haynes and Palmer grown any? They both have proven they can throw the pill.

    • Valley Athletics

Haynes looks about 5″11 . Palmer looks about 5’9″” .

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Well summer is here…They are due for a spurt.

      • Jefe

        Palmer looks tiny to me.

    • Royal Blue Thunder

Haynes is 6 ft. even, 162 lbs. and Palmer is 5 ft. 10 in. and 165 lbs. This is according to Maxpreps last season.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

        Well,

I think they are about a inch off. However, kids grow. I am hoping these two do.

        • Royal Blue Thunder

How do you figure they are an inch off? Did you measure them? lol That makes no sense. If anything, a PAC-5 coach would under report the actual height. If Hags had it his way, he would have Haynes listed as 5 ft. 9in lol.
Koa Haynes was SIX feet tall last season. I’m okay with that.

          • irishman

            The checks in the mail

            I love you

            I promise I won’t c*m in you mouth

            listed heights are always accurate

  • Trinity Fan

I guess when you had Johnny Stanton (6-3, 230) lthe last two seasons Costello looks thin. He is about 190 but with his frame he could add 25 lbs.

  • Jefe

I love when people read too much into these passing league games & their results.

I have no doubt that Santa Margarita, under the guidance of the wizard, Harry Welch, will be ready to rumble on August 30.

    • Kurt Stone

I am 100% in agreement Jefe. I have always said that these passing leagues are deceiving. Football is played in the trenches, and let a receiver get smacked up at the line, or a QB get pressured, and then see how they respond. These passing leagues are a fun game of touch football that too many make too much about. I for one was surprised Amat did so well this past weekend. I know Hags tries to play everyone to see what he has, as opposed to only playing the starters and trying to win. Coach Welch is a proven winner, and he will have the Eagles ready come Aug 30th. It should be a great game.

    • WCDan

Guy’s your preaching to the choir, I think most on here realize it’s just passing league, it’s just good fun to get out there and see some competition between high school football teams, even if it is just touch football. We realize this has no bearing on how the season will play out.

  • 12th man
