LB Matt Henderson leaves Rosemead, transfers to Cathedral …

Junior linebacker Matt Henderson, who was expected by many to be one of the top defensive players in the Mission Valley League this season, has left Rosemead and will play at Cathedral this fall.

Henderson got experience last season as a sophomore and was on his way to a big season, according to several MVL insiders. He is the second player the Panthers expected to have contribute to leave the program. Sophomore speedster Jesse Audelo also left for Cathedral. Audelo was a wide receiver/defensive back.

Aram’s take: Two big blows for the Panthers, who you’d like to think are going to be in the thick of a wide-open MVL this season. These two defections hurt.

    Cathedral begins their annual shopping.

  • Rene77

Pearson is known for recruiting. Although they never seem to finish strong. So close but yet so far.

  • GP AKA Green Machine

I saw Rosemead, and they were my inside pick to win the MVL, and possibly get to the 2nd round in the playoffs. However these guys stand no chance in making an impact vs Serra, Chaminade, and Harvard Westlake. i guess after one good passing league game against Monrovia, these guys felt they were on that level…Well that was passsing league, that is nothing compared to the talent in the Mission League. They are going to look decent against the Cathedral preseason, but will hit that brick wall when soon after…Bad move for these kids…

    • AMAT 73

      GP,

How can you say bad move for these kids . Better education , facilities and a great alumni with great contacts. Far better competition with better coaching as in coaching them up . It’s a win , win for them . Plus remember , things change after this coming season . Just imagine the benefits of facing Serra and Chaminade will do for them in the 2014-2015 season when the league changes or did you forget about that fact . Man , that line about having some success against MTown having a impact on their decision is quite a stretch don’t you think ???????

      • GP AKA Green Machine

it is a stretch…I was being sarcastic…don’t throw the baby out with bath water….He won’t make a impact this year nor next year…have you seen him play… come on.

  • Valley Athletics

They also recruited a small running back from walnuts freshman team . Very good player but to small .

  • Kurt Stone

I see nothing different than what all the other schools are doing. Now these boys will get a quality education on top of the ability to play in a tougher league. If they are any good they will shine, if not, then they still get the education. As a parent I would love this, as my kid would be getting a better education than the local public school. Lets be real, Rosemead is not as good educationally as Cathedral. Look at the numbers. Cathedral is a very good educational institution. The football team on the other hand has struggled.

  • S.Carter

They also recruited a Linebacker from DR….Cathedral is no joke!!

Coltin Gerhart, a three-year starter at quarterback for Norco, is leaving the school, the Riversde Press-Enterprise reported on Monday.

Vista Murrieta could be his final destination. Gerhart’s father, Todd, has made inquires, according to Vista Murrieta officials.

Todd Gerhart did not have his contract renewed as Norco’s coach.

If Gerhart arrives at Vista Murrieta, he would be the final piece to what could be another top five team for the Mustangs, who have been trying out five quarterbacks during the summer.

Gerhart is also an outstanding outfielder in baseball.

Just read that welch at Santa margarita is retiring after the season.

Cathedral is a Better fit for any Kid. Academics is second to none. The Football program finished in 3rd place behind Serra and Chaminade and made it to the Semi-Final. The Phantoms havea Strong Team with Size this year. The only drawback is a weak Pre-Season schedule starting with La Salle. To Tech Support just be Glad Cathedral does not play Bosco Tech Anymore or the Score would be 100-0. Bosco Tech’s Academics is not better than You want people to think. At Cathedral you get both with a 98% Graduation Rate going on to College.

    • Tech Support

“Bosco Tech’s Academics is not better than You want people to think.”

Yes, tell me more about the academics.

Being in the educational field the academics at Cathedral are on par with those at Rosemead (although smaller student body they probably will get more attention/counseling at Cathedral).

But that wasn’t my point. My point was annually Cathedral recruits players to come to their football team. I don’t like athletic recruiting and poaching players from other teams. I said something in the posts about Noodles from West Covina going to Diamond Bar as well and nobody jumped on me saying I was a Walnut (that’s DB’s rival correct?) homer blah blah blah.

I just think it is a horrible way to work in high school athletics and even if it helps you win I don’t understand how a student or an an alumnus could feel pride in it.

    • Rene77

exactly!!!! finished 3rd. just like royal blue thunder stated in his post, they cant compete with D1 apponets. Academicly yes a great fit but pierson can not bring the ship home. and if bishop would play cathedral it also would be 100-0 just like cathedral over bosco.

    • fb102

      Better fit for ANY kid…..hmmmmm…..

Please enlighten us on the Kurt Scoby fly-by thru CHS……

Were the CHS academics not good/tough enough for KS?

      • Football 1

Kurt Scooby is a Great Young Man . The problem is he does not want to go to School. Cathedral had Tutoring and Summer school for him but he chose the easy way out and went to Alemany. Alemany has an Adult school down the Street where kids make up grades. At Cathedral you either have grades or go somewhere else. Good luck to Kurt at Monrovia but the Kid is so far behind on Academics .

        • fb102

          Good stuff.

What is the name of said school Alemany uses to stash it’s players with academic issues?

  • Royal Blue Thunder

    2011 Bishop Amat 56, Cathedral 7

    2010 Bishop Amat 53, Cathedral 6

    • Rene77

cathedral can not compete with the big boys. if cathedral would play amat now it would be 100-0 amat.

      • Football 1

To Rene 77, You are forgetting The Cathedral team that played Amat in 2010 was mostly Sophmores. The next year Cathedral lost their QB Hayden Reddig with a torn ACL for the Season. Cathedral Started a Freshman QB Against Amat. How about other Sports Cathedral Dominates Amat In Soccer, Track , Baseball, and Basketball Playoffs Cathedral 49-Amat 13 at Halftime at Amat. Oh I fogot Vollyball CIF Champs for the Phantoms. I am not saying Cathedral would have beat Amat in football,But the scores would nothave been onesided.

        • Rene77

where on this blog are we discussing soccer, track, baseball and basketball??? Football my friend. No disrespect but you are fighting an up hill battle that can not be won. Please choose your battles wisely. And those are just excuses. So you are telling us that cathedral would be able to win amat at football this year and the year after??? Please do explain.

  • fb102

IF these players were such a ‘great fit’ at Cathedral WHY didn’t they start their HS AT Cathedral.

How do these players all of a sudden change schools without any ‘incentive’.

IF these players were REALLY on the ball they’d have transferred to Amat.

    • AramT

I agree with that. Amat way, way closer and better program at a higher level.

    • AMAT 73

      fb102,
As far as the LB position , if you follow AMAT , you know this players chance of seeing action at LB would not be good as we are solid at that postion both this and next year . As far as DB the same but WR it could mean playing time . To me if you are going to transfer , go where you have a decent chance of cracking the line up and maybe that’s the case for them at Cathedral , other wise why go there , much like many have said about Payton choice of school .

      • fb102

        Amat 73,

I do follow Amat fb VERY closely.

IF these players are as ‘good’ as touted the Amat coaching staff would have found spots for them somewhere.

As a fan who follows Amat football, you SHOULD know that 1 of Amat’s issues in the past couple of season has been DEPTH. Players getting hurt, not working out at a spot need back-ups READY to step in.

In NO way am I writing that these 2 players would be strictly back-ups……throw them on the roster and let the BEST coaching staff in the SGV figure out the ‘right’ spot for them.

Wonder if CHS ‘promised’ these players starting spots? If so, not good for the player and program. Players need to compete for spot or EVERYBODY loses in the long run….

        • AMAT 73

          fb102,

I get your point on the depth but with the past 3 classes that have come in I believe that issue is somewhat taken care of and I think we saw a little of that last year with the likes of Camargo and a few others . There will be quite few Sophomores on Varsity along with Juniors and of couse those who are now Seniors . These aren’t just fill a uniform players . Don’t know if you saw any of last years Freshman games but a whole lot of talent on that team of which many can play Varsity and will . The thing is in todays gane players are not willing to take the chance of making a name for themselves after transferring , they want to play and start based on what they did at their previous school which you know doesn’t fly at AMAT . It’s hard to unseat a player at AMAT who has put in his time and dedication and who also has been in the program 2-3 years .I am not against transfers but it seems when concerning AMAT since they did not grow up in the program ( the mind set of a LANCER ) they do not have that big of an impact on the team . Look back a few years on some recent transfers in and they didn’t make that big of a difference . Maybe the fact of them only being Juniors probably next year would be their time to shine at AMAT but would they be willing to wait ? To me probably the slime would have been the better choice to hit the field running as they are in need and trying to rebuild their program , so I think the need for these types is greater there then at Cathedral , but again no one knows what was promised but themselves .

          • Rene77

Amat 73, well said. I fallow SGV football and I find that Amat has a lot of dept. these “super sophs” are no joke. Most of these kids go beyond the workout they do at school and that’s what separates them from the rest. Good things to come for Amat.

          • fb102

73, by depth I meant QUALITY depth. The talent well is filling up, but has NOT topped off yet.

Their HAVE been key transfers that HAVE played minutes because a) they were talented b) they beat out the starter for a spot. Orduno was huge one. Archer coming from Damien last season is gonna be huge. The db from Servite.

I did see MOST of the frosh games last season and I knew that class was talented. The only ‘issue’ with that talent is that THIS season they are gonna be YOUNG and asked to play big minutes.

WILL the youngsters be ENTIRELY ready at the start of the 2013 season? Are the youngsters gonna be able to handle the limelight of the Friday Night lights?

IF Amat can get by with a winning record pre-season with no major injuries to ANY starter and GROW as players AND a team, then I think the league race is gonna be good for Amat. Will they be able to finally beat Alemany, we will have to wait and see.

          • AMAT 73

            fb102,

I stand corrected , I believe Ortega ?(Servite ) transfer did a heck of a job , but then again look where he came from . I believe we have enough depth this coming season and with preseason playing along with some scrimmaging the youngsters will be ready . The jury is still out on Damien transfer but hopefully he pans out . The future is looking bright and I hope talent just keeps flowing in as it has these past couple of years , as for Alemany we will see as you say
            .

I left a message yesterday why did it not get posted because I said sorry your article is wrong assuming these 2 kids were a blow to Rosemead by leaving post it

    • AramT

Well if your internet skills are as bad as your grammar, then you know why it didn’t get posted. Wasn’t anything I did … USER ERROR, perhaps?

      • Lawrence

        LMAO to funny

      • Rebelaunica

Panther fan sounds like a hater with a kid that has no talent… just saying. I am just in shock that ADULTS are actually putting down these kids. I call this HATERS. Whatever the reason for them not starting at cathedral is their business. Don’t ASSume anything. Unless you know the facts, Otherwise, you just look like an a$$. Also… What happened to encouraging our kids? Who do you think you are to judge??????? Shame on you.

  • Panther Fan

This kids left not for academics check their grades, if cathedral or other private schools are that good in academics they should post their API scores like public schools do! And they are not defecting, moving to get better exposure , hope they get it !

  • Football 1

Cathedral sent 4 Players this year to D1 School’s Hayden Reddig LSU, D’ Marri scott Fresno State, Tory Mctyer UNLV,Cameron Akins CS Obisbo. You don’t have to go to Amat to get looked at. Every Year Cathedral send’s out kids to D1 school’s. Most Major College Big time Coaches stop at Cathedral every year.

    • Rene77

Still haven’t answered my question. So do you think cathedral can beat them this year if they would have played them?? Since they are much healthier and bigger..

      • Football 1

It would be a Closer game with Amat winning because of line depth. Cathedral has the Skill players but not alot of Line depth. I know Serra and Chaminade could beat Amat the two top teams of the Mission league. it’s Unfortunate Amat caught Cathedral when they were down a Bit with Key Injuries. Cathedral also does not have 6th Period PE to lift weights like Amat and most school have. They have to come in at 6 AM or Lunch time to lift . Cathedral again is about Academics same System as Our brother school La Salle in Pasadena. Good luck to amat.

        • Rene77

Well we will see next year when Serra will step into the PAC-5. I’m pretty sure they will do fine but keep in mind next years juniors and seniors will be stacked. Serras freshman team went 7-7 last year And lost to Notre dame 41-13. as for amats freshman team went 10-0 with a win over Notre dame.

        • AMAT 73

          Football1,
What are you basing your reasoning on the Chaminade or Serra will beat AMAT. Iwould really like to read how came to that conclusion . Was it by how bad they beat you at full power and we beat you when you were down , young , and injured ?????????
