CIF declares Jake Payton ineligible for 2013 season …

CIF has declared standout running back Jake Payton ineligible for the 2013 season after San Dimas challenged his transfer to Upland.

The information was posted on the CIF-Southern Section’s website on Thursday afternoon and cites violations of Rule 510, which is the athletically motivated/undue influence bylaw. San Dimas challenged Payton’s transfer on both grounds.

Payton, an a Tribune All-Area choice at running back last season and the reigning Valle Vista League MVP, rushed for 1,628 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2012.

San Dimas originally said it would not challenge Payton’s decision to leave for Upland, but earlier this week Saints coach Bill Zernickow confirmed the school had a change of heart.

“We had a change of heart, it’s a group decision,” Zernickow told the Tribune on Monday. “My opinion is that you can’t say nothing if something happened.”

Payton had been with San Dimas up until shortly after the end of the school year. Rumors of his plans to leave for Upland swirled in the months prior to him actually going. Payton practiced with San Dimas during spring practice. He later participated in passing tournaments with Upland.

Aram’s take: So now the burden of proof is on Payton/his family/Upland to prove the allegations are untrue. If not, the area sees another standout lose his season to a HORRIBLE RULE.

  • Aaron

    Saw it coming right?

  • GP AKA Green Machine

    Wow,

CIF is batting 1.000 on these. This is more devastating for kid’s senior year! We can argue all day, but we must agree that transferring is dangerous at the moment. It’s a roll of the dice, and you don’t want to crap out. A shot at getting a D1 offer is very slim now. The Payton Family should swallow their pride, and go back to SD. No one will fault the kid. He was “influenced”. The parents/coach relationship should be no existent at this point, and Payton should just patch up with his friends and coach. I think with this happening, if he was accepted back, he would play out of this world being that he almost lost his last year behind chasing “Greener Pastures”. San Dimas would be a serious threat to win the Midvalley, with a hungry Payton back on team.

  • SDSaints

He can put his tail between his legs, bite his lip, and go back to SD, or not play his Senior year. That is his only option.

  • Pingback: Question: If you were a high school coach, would you challenge transfers? | Best High School Sports Blog

  • mr power

players transferring their senior year is selfish and dumb.

coaches jeopardizing eligibility of former players even more selfish and dumb.

high school football has lost its way.

  • Desert Rat

Honor, ethics, morals and commitment. Four words that are losing value with today’s kids and mostly, their selfish know-it-all parents and “advisors.”

    • AramT

So I guess if you think a different school gives you a better chance at a scholarship, you shouldn’t have the freedom to go find out. I like that.

      • Steve Ramirez

The problem it doesnt. Either you have the talent or size to play at the next level or you don’t. If you do, they will find you.

        • AMAT 73

          Steve,
Then what do you think is root of all these transfers . If what you say is true , that sort of takes the athltetic motivation factor away , doesn’t it . These transfers are made for the benefit of showcasing ones talent at school that fits that needs of the player in their mind . Are you saying they are wrong and fooling themselves . Many of these transfer are talented so why leave if it doesn’t make a difference ???????

          • Steve Ramirez

Because they, mainly their parents, believe it gives them a better showcase. But in reality, it all comes down to ability and size, and the latter might be more important than the former.

          • mr power

steve you hit the nail right on the head. the reality is D1 coaches don’t care how many times a kid was an all league player or all cif. they don’t care about his stats or wins. its all about height, speed, strength ratio.

they also don’t care what system the kid played in. the will “coach him” once he gets on campus.

the exception to this is QB.

        • LM resident

Maybe the transfer is not about a scholarship at the next level. It may be about leaving about a program that changed while the student was there. It could be the kid finds himself playing for a jackarse. It happens beyond the kids or family’s control.

      • Desert Rat

Steve sorta of took the wind out of my sails….however, there is not ONE THING that would have prevented Jake or any other player of that matter from getting a scholarship at San Dimas.

After all SD and the staff have done, especially in Jake’s case, he runs to Upland because he thinks the grass is greener on the other side. Well that’s only the case because its fertilized with bull$hit.

You preach free enterprise, but at the end of the day, Upland’s staff could give a crap if they move one or ten kids to the next level. If they truly “cared” about the kids, they would be preparing them for LIFE not a way to get what you want without working for it.

Upland’s staff is a bunch of egocentric douche bags trying to grab all the glory for themselves. I mean, there have been AT LEAST 11 high profile transfers to Upland dating back to 2010…but they’re “doing it for the kids.” Bitch please!

      • MP

Aram what kind of message are you sending these kids? These kids are first and foremost STUDNETS, academics has been placed on the back burner with all these ridiculous multi-million dollar sports contracts and get rich quick pipe dreams for these high school athletes… High school sports especially football has been turned into a farce with all these transfers to perceived “greener pastures”. Your stance is saying it’s alright for these players to abandon their schools, teammates, and coaches, where’s the loyalty? What lessons does that teach these kids now and for their futures as adults. Here’s another point of view. These coaches are their to help mold these young players into young adults but their is also the expectation to field a “competitive” team. Are they just supposed to sit back and watch their best players use their program as a revolving door for their own personal gain? These coaches taking these transfers know exactly who these kids are and where they are coming from… Shame on them! What happened to the days of just playing at the school where you lived? Professional sports did just fine then and had no problem finding the talent to fill theirs rosters…

      • Tom Thumb

If another woman gave you a better chance of having a boy with good athletic ability should you dump your current wife for the new woman?

    • AramT

Hey Desert Rat, while you’re up there on your soap box, why don’t you tell all of us why Paraclete didn’t challenge the Trailer/Boykins transfer to Damien a couple years ago?

      • Desert Rat

While Uriah and Travion’s personal business is really none of your business, it was a legitimate move well out of their control.

Just goes to show you’re reaching and have no clue nor basis for any sort of any LEGITIMATE argument.

        • AramT

Oh no, I have a clue. Believe me. You’re just picking your spots … legit move, sure. Then going to a private school … eh … to play for Gano … meh … could have been construed as athletically motivated. But that would have never happened, or you’d have tried to block it, right?

          • Desert Rat

You don’t know the situation, its not a public matter, nor is it open for discussion.

And to reiterate what I said before, you have no clue what you’re talking about.

          • AramT

Don’t say I don’t know what I’m talking about and then say you won’t talk about it. Over here, we keep things real. You’re over here acting like you know so much about Payton’s situation and I see that you have no problem with his business being put on display, but it’s not kosher if it’s a couple of Paraclete guys?

I get it more than you know, you’re defending your friends (the SD coaching staff). You’re closing ranks. Protecting your own. It’s noble, but smells.

You see, I post under my real name, so there’s no mystery about who’s doing the talking. Maybe you should go to Fred’s blog or that other pile of crap you frequent. Don’t need half stories here.

          • pbah1

aram, are you saying that fred’s blog is a pile of crap? talk about being on a soap box.

          • AramT

Can you read? Did you see the part about “or”

          • Desert Rat

You honestly need to get over yourself Aram.

The Trailer/Boykins situation has nothing remotely to do with the Peyton situation. Most of all, its a NON-STORY. Completely apple and oranges.

If you really need to know…better yet to shut you up, Gano did not go recruiting them. The boys were not shopping their services, thinking there chances at Damien would bare any better fruit than at Paraclete. There was nothing athletically motivated about their move. A parent got transferred – in the course of employment – from our area to that area. So in order to remain as a family there CHOICE was to move together. What’s so criminal about wanting to be family.

Am I defending Coach Z?, well I can tell you I will walk with a man of character and honor. I will stand by him when individuals like yourself take swipes at him with your sensationalist type of blogging that you spew out under the guise of journalism.

I mean really…you have the nerve to put people on blast here, stir up peanut gallery and then get mad when someone challenges you or your frame of thinking. Take responsibility for your actions.

            Just keepin’ it real bro!

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Peanut gallery? Really? People that have a observant opinion about a sad situation are the peanut gallery? Incredible.

          • Lawrence

            LOVE IT…. NICE JOB ARAM

        • disqus_wD2qThRkJd

Well then neither is Payton’s personal business none of YOUR business either..BUT your here!!

  • Saints Fan

Something happened, where did Greenie’s post go ???
I will post my reply again —- There is one more significant Xfer left out there — Scoby !!!! there is nothing on CIF website about paperwork being pending. One Question – Xfer’s and get’s eligibility at St. Paul for change of residence, leaves Mid Season as coach is fired, goes to Cathedral, goes to Alemany and ends up at Monrovia. Question — if it goes back to St Paul as that is the last “official” athletic eligible school, ya’ll in Greenville might want to be a little nervous. Seems to me the St Paul crew might be a tad unhappy as he bailed on them mid-season when Asante got fired !! Hull – Athletic Motivation / Payton – Athletic Motivation (part) / Scoby – ???

    • AramT

Was wondering the same thing … because I think it just matters what part of SoCal you’re in.

    • Saints Fan

So let’s just say Scoby does gain eligibility —- you can guarantee Hull’s Attorney is filing something the next day, Payton clan jumps on the 57 south and heads to his OC office to join the bandwagon —- oh how Ugly. Cuz that one is a no brainer. I would NOT want to be GM right about now…..

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Well, we will see what happens…Who’s to say St paul wants Scoby back. We know Assante is a recruiter, which means he influenced him there along with a bunch of other players who left. I really don’t think that they are going to challenge especially with that kind of baggage, they let the coach go. Whatever happened over there with Coach Assante, Scoby and the rest those transfers will be laid to rest. I think they want reestablish their image along the lines of Bishop Amat and other Private Catholic Schools. St Paul is no place for Scoby, they know that. If CIF clears Him, what could Payton say. Plenty of other kids were cleared this season, that are not being reported here. CIF looks at this case by case. If they deny Kurt Scoby it would be a blow, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. If it happens so be it.

        • AMAT 73

          GP,

If Scoby had enrolled at AMAT the slimers would have caught a bullet train to CIF headquarters and filed that complaint before the ink was dry . Might be the reason AMAT stayed away from him the second time around as why risk the head ache . But it is an intesting point as to why all this movement by Scoby never even raised a blip on CIF’s radar screen . But factor in he left CO which never challeges and the fact that most privates don’t either probably has something to do with that .

          • Saints Fan

The reason all the movement has not raised a blip on the CIF’s radar is because (at least according to CIF Website) paperwork has not been filed. CIF will only review what is brought before them. Right now, today Scoby is only eligible to play football at St Paul (the last athletic school of record). When the paperwork get’s filed, that is when I believe the process will start. Remember, the review process starts or is heavily influenced by GM, who is an old CO guy.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

yeah, but GM also carries the CO mentality too…that’s why the “Challenge” is oh so important in the ruling…

          • AMAT 73

            Saints Fan,
And even older AMAT guy .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

You are correct. That’s why St paul wants no part of this. They are competing with other private schools and When your in the Catholic Private school football Biz your image is huge. BA has a top tier Image along with the majority of other catholic schools. They did not want their Name in the middle of this ridiculous stuff. By the way Mtown does not challenge either. In past kids would just go duarte the moment something and would be playing against Mtown the following year. We lost some of those games because of those players. You just let kids go. It’s not worth the backlash.

      • SDSaints

Scooby will be eligible because he is a ward of the State. Very different than Noodles.

        • Mr Lyons AKA Jake’s Guardian

FYI – Jake Payton is a ward of the state.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

But his former coach challenged, and that’s really important…I think everyone here has been discussing the
            “Challenge” .

      • observantcat

Just some real inside info. Scoby’s eligibility will not be contested. Mark my word. Neither will the others who have transferred from St. Paul. The subject here is about Payton, Imagine if he came over to Monrovia High School… what a thought. I know that the same coaches that had their eyes on him had both eyes on Scoby simply because they both were on the same 7on7 squad.

        • Desert Rat

OBCAT: “I know that the same coaches that had their eyes on him had both eyes on Scoby simply because they both were on the same 7on7 squad.”

….and there it is, undue influence.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

sure but who’s going to challenge…St Paul has to challenge..remember that’s the kicker!!! Besides..O Cat is not is guardian of any of these kids, and Hulls lawyer will be sued if he brings up anything regarding another kids situation. Come on now.

  • Beach rat

Great stuff. Rules are rule and desert rat speaks the truth.

  • pbah1

so fred, aram, sandy, prussack…..does coach Z and san dimas join the evil empire along with west co. is coach Z overweight, out of shape, evil, vindictive, shameful, pathetic and all the other words banned by aram. lets be fair and balanced. Sandy, be sure your kids don’t go to san dimas either and get another fund-raiser going for jake peyton and his family.

    • disqus_wD2qThRkJd

How was he NOT gonna say something in the beginnning then, ALL of a sudden? Sounds jaded to me!

      • Highlander

Coach Z was not but ultimately the decision was made by the higher up. Payton’s guardian is a district employee and taking one of your own out of the school district you work to go play for another team doesn’t look good. From what I have been told this his Superintendent written all over it. This is a message to parents, employees, and players that conduct like this will not be tolerated. You can all try and blame Coach Z on this one but he was going to take the high road. This is above him and he is just following orders.

        • Food 4 Thought

I have a hard time believing the Superintendnet would purposely create dissention in the district. They are politicians and this has the chance of getting ugly. These guys like status quo. Especially when the guardian is the guidance counselor at the middle school that feeds San Dimas High.

  • Youknowwhoyouare

This is ridiculous how can Zernickow aka the Cow do this to a kid with a bright future. Coach Z is a terrible coach and a mentor I played there the last four years and regretted it, we could never make it out of the semis because of terrible play calling. If you’re a parent and your kid plans on playing for SD, I’d advise you not to, terrible coaching and a weak program that’s the truth.

    • Steve Ramirez

Where was San Dimas before Zernickow got there?

    • SDSaints

The play calling was not the problem, it was the selfish players that didn’t buy into the program like yourself.

      • Youknowwhoyouare

Yeah it wasn’t the playing calling at all right.. Lets just call 31 buck trap on 3rd and 20 and gain 3 yards and punt. As for the players there were more then enough who bought in and worked out and practiced hard everyday.

        • SDSaints

You obviously know nothing about coaching. Tell me what play to call on 3rd and 20? The NFL runs screens and draws dumbass.

          • Steve Ramirez

Awesome post, SDS.. I guess he never read Bill Walsh’s book. Walsh said the biggest mistake young coaches make is to throw into the teeth of a defense on 3rd and 15 or more. The smart play, Walsh said, is to try to get 5-10 yards, punt, play defense and pick up some yards on the exchange.

          • AMAT 73

            SDS,
You got that right , I’ve been watching my beloved RAMS use that as their staple call on 3rd and long . But you don’t play in to the teeth of the D when you’re backed up . Smart call by the coach

    • Highlander

You are showing your immaturity by the choice of words you use. You sound like a bitter ex player who didn’t get enough playing time and was spoiled by the success of the program. Ask any team if they would be happy with reaching the semi-finals 4 years in a row and they would all take it. Don’t be so selfish and ungrateful.

    • Lupe

Yeah real bad year for the saints & coach Z, beat Bohi, win league and make it to the semis. Sounds like someone wasn’t good enough to get on the field.

      • Youknowwhoyouare

We barely squeaked by Bonita and the league was garbage as always have u seen anyone else besides us and Covina make any noise? And for being on the field I’m pretty sure I was on that lmao

        • GP AKA Green Machine

Coach Brought SD their first title…That’s historic.

    • In the know in the IE

Hey ZEN KOW the running back Scoby and Noodles want to transfer in to San Dimas and play for you. Maybe than you can beat Monrovia LOL

  • Rene77

All I got to say is very bad parenting. Parents are supposed to protect there children not hurt them. Finish what you started. Honor , ethics, morals and commitment!!! Couldn’t say it better desert rat.

    • AramT

you forgot “FREEDOM TO DO WHAT YOU THINK IS BEST FOR YOUR KID” (right or wrong)

      • Rene77

along comes consequences (right or wrong)

        • AramT

there would be no consequences for parents doing what they think is right if we didn’t have idiotic outdated rules.

          • Rene77

Aram, CIF needs to have these rules. If this wasn’t in play you would have kids transferring every year by the numbers.

          • AramT

            so what?

and are you kidding me? you think these rules actually stop anybody from trying? no way.

          • Rene77

Aram, well by the looks of things it seems like they are starting to crack down and set examples starting with noodles and Payton.

      • Coach M

Only if what’s best for your kid benefits my program! Don’t ever try to question my AUTHORITY.

    • Mr Lyons AKA Jake’s Guardian

First off, while we are casting stones lets start with posting with your real names. This way your kids will see what you are posting and saying about others.

I have sat by reading a lot of crap that is onsided. Bad parenting!!! When was the last time you took in a young man that needed a loving family, food to eat, a warm bed to sleep in? If you can say you have God bless you. Honor, ethics, morals and commitment are a great tag line that most on this blog probably don’t live by. We as a family strive to live everyday as a light to others and honor our Lord by living by a set of ethical and moral laws set forth in the Bible.

My wife starting looking after this young man in the 6th grade, feeding him, reviewing and signing off on school work and making sure he got projects done. In 8th grade, against the advice of her peers vouched for him in court so he wouldn’t be put into the system. Before 9th grade when he was evicted from his trailer park, we convinced the administration at San Dimas High School to accept his permit from Glendora in order to keep an eye on him. Then we had to convince the coaching staff to allow him on the team. To say the least they weren’t thrilled to take him and made a comment to my wife that he’d end up like his brother and drop out of high school and using drugs. When he couldn’t make it to school from Glendora I would pick him up and get him there. After school or practice we would feed him, get his homework done and drop him off back at the one bedroom trailer that his grandmother had in Glendora. Most nights, he most likely didnt have a bed to sleep in as other family members were there. This continued until early in the 10th grade when he finally moved into our house full time. Everything we have done is to take care of this young man. Every decision that we have made for Jake has been to make sure he has a safe, warm and loving environment.

I will make it clear here: At no point was our decision athletically motivated. At no time were we approached to play at Upland by the coaching staff or others connected to the program.

Honor ,ethics, morals and commitment – we try to live it everyday. Do you?

      • Colt74

I’m not going to post about this situation because it would serve no point here. My views are my own and I have made them clear in other blogs here on this subject. I AM going to commend and THANK you and your wife, and family, for what you have done concerning this young man and hope that everything works out for Jake and your family.

      • Desert Rat

Remember, we all have the freedom of choice, but we do not have the freedom consequence.

While these rules may be flawed and “archaic” to some, the rules and consequences were clearly defined.

Therefore, knowing you would be playing with fire and risking it all to transfer, was it really worth it? Could you not have stayed and worked even harder at helping Jake pursue his academic and athletic aspirations at the next level?

You say your moves are predicated on providing a safe, warm and loving environment….could he not get that at San Dimas? I find it hard to believe.

I don’t see Coach Z as a vindictive person. Matter of fact, I can bet this whole thing has weighed heavily on his mind and heart. He’s a great man who cares just as much as you. So for him and his administration to move forward with this tells me that you’re not being very forthcoming…that is, if you’re not being told the truth either.

      • Highlander

Put an end to the speculation and tell us all the whole story. Why did you actually leave. What did Coach Z actually do. Why did you choose Upland.

      • AMAT 73

        Guest ,
While you should be applauded on your efforts and I know that is not why you do it but hats off to you and your wife. But you have come on here and painted the whole picture but it is not clear totally . Since you did put it out on the blog and you are stating that no UI or AM were involved why when you are trying to put some form of stability and the 4 codes you try to live by in his life why did you have him transfer to Upland . Seems to me that at least 2 of those codes were not followed , honor and commitment . If you care not to answer I totally understand , but it’s out there now and I don’t think I will be last one to ask you that question .

      • Sandy

God bless you and your family

      • Not So Fast My Friend

Guest. Kudos to you and your wife for stepping in and taking care of, supporting, and providing this young man the home and educational foundation needed. My hats off to you.

Hey Rene, How can you say Honor, Ethics, when BIshop Amat has been stealing players from other School’s for year’s.

      • AMAT 73

        FB1,
Please elaborate on that post with a few examples of this stealing of players. If you care to that is.

    • Lawrence

Maybe he doesn’t like the coaching staff, this is america he should have the freedom to pursue any HS he likes. It doesn’t affect you its his choice.

  • reality

@Lyons: So if what you say is true then why did CIF rule him ineligible? Bias against the kid or you or what? Please explain if you are who you say you are.

    • Mr Lyons AKA Jake’s Guardian

I will answer your question when you give me your real name and quit hiding. I am who I say i am.

  • reality

Whats my screen name have to do with anything? I’m not posting as his surrogate daddy? You are!!

  • reality

@Lyons” Scripture makes it clear let your prayers and good deeds be in private, no need to blow a trumpet if you feed or clothe or give in fact that is wrong. You also choose to out your charge by ridiculing his brother his living conditions and his grandmas one bedroom trailer? What right minded adult does that to a teenage boy’s that are extremely sensitive about such things. I truly hope you are no part of this boy’s life but if you and your wife are please get some help.

  • LM resident

Every kid should have one free transfer!! With coaching changes, personality clashes, etc.., One free transfer is too much to ask? High School years are short, they should have some freedom to move if desired.

  • SD FB PARENT

This Had nothing to do with Honor, Ethics, or Morals. What this had to do with is adults messing up this kids Senior Season. Nobody but his Guardians know why he transferred to Upland. But who wins in this situation? who wins by challenging this transfer? Does SD get they’re Star RB back who was the feel good story of the valley last year? NO. Way to go San Dimas High in Throwing your parting stone point blank at this Child? What did it gain you? Nothing. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

  • Saints Fan

OK, just a question. The headline says “Payton declared Ineligible for 2013 Season”. Is that really the case? All the CIF website is showing is that the Transfer to Upland has been Denied due to violations of 510. There is no disciplinary notations.

  • Highlander

@Lyons…you stated below “I will make it clear here: At no point was our decision athletically motivated. At no time were we approached to play at Upland by the coaching staff or others connected to the program.”

Then tell us all who you picked upland. Here is a list of things going against you.
    1) Upland has a lower API than SD, so it’s not academic.
    2) Petyon played on a 7 on 7 team filled with Upland Players
    3) Tre is a well known “associate” of Upland and is seen in may photos with college coaches wearing Upland Gear.
    3) Your wife works at Lone Hill Middle School which is on the same block as SD
    4) Payton played 2 varsity seasons under Coach Z and all of the sudden now he leaves after an MVP season and headed into a season where he would be the feature back of another semi-final team at worst.

So tell us all Mr. Lyons, why did you really decide to leave SD and why did you choose Upland because all the evidence(CIF agrees) points to it being BOTH athletically motivated AND undue influence. Here is your chance to end all the speculation, tell the truth, and once and for all put an end to this debate. Your decision to put in for the transfer started this whole process. You were the ones that put Payton’s senior season at risk. Don’t go blaming other people for something that originated with you. Tell us why, change our mind, we all want to hear your side.

    • Saints Fan

You also forgot that one of the Upland coaches works for BBT. Oh yah, and the same Upland Coach had Jake Payton’s photo on his personal Facebook page on March 8th

      • Desert Rat

Oh yes, Coach Mike Esquivel. Let’s look at Mike. He is a coach at Upland. He coaches Upland Youth Football. Mike gives private lessons under BBT and, yes MIke even helps run the BBT youth and high school passing league all-star teams.

YOU PEOPLE STILL WANT TO KEEP CRYIN’ THERE IS NO UNDUE INFLUENCE?

    • New York

You might have answered your own question.

“2) Petyon played on a 7 on 7 team filled with Upland Players”

This is a great reason to transfer to a school. It sounds like Jake has lots of new friends there. Fitting into a school socially is huge for adjusting to a new environment.

  • Mr Lyons AKA Jakes Guardian

Yesterday, I let the emotion of the day get to me and the “bad parenting” comment sent me over the edge. We truly believe we are doing the best thing for Jake. To us that’s all that matters.

    • Highlander

Appreciate that but Still doesn’t answer our questions. What was the REAL reason your family selected Upland and decided to leave SD. Is Coach Z the real bad guy here or is this one big misunderstanding.

  • New York

Is it athletically motivated or socially motivated? Did Jake make lots of new friends during his off-season training and decide that he would like to go to school with these equally dedicated peers?

  • Highlander

@Lyon’s, this is story as I have pieced it together and been told by other. Coming off an MVP season Jake’s recruiting isn’t going as well as you thought. You naturally blame the head coach. To get more publicity Jake,
like many other athletes, joins 7on7 passing league team. This is where BBT and Coach Mike from Upland come into play. Being a very good athlete Jake starts to do well and those associated with BBT and Upland start filling his head saying “I cant believe you are not getting any looks, if you were at Upland things would be different. Look at me, I have pics of me with my arm around college coaches, I have the hook ups.” Jake decides to not play baseball at SD to focus on football, play 7on7 and hit the weight room. He continues with the off -season program at SD. Jake decides to hit the camp circuit and compare himself amongst the other nationally recruited RB’s. He is told in someway shape or form by either Coach Z or someone at SD that he is not BCS schools material and should focus on what’s realistic. This makes the BBT and Upland influence very real since they are hyping Jake and saying he can get a D1 scholarship. The family decides to
transfer, but the problem is they need to move in order for Jake to be eligible. Somewhere along the line a paper trail is created and this is what will be the nail in the coffin. Jake starts SD spring ball but only last 1 week. When school ends he starts summer FB with Upland and plays in a 7on7 tournament with Upland before he is officially enrolled at Upland, pics prove this. All along Coach Z, according to Aram in an interview during spring ball, states he will not challenge. At some point between that interview and yesterdays decision the Admin of SD and probably district personnel, Bonita Unified is very small, made the decision to challenge and send a message. My guess is that if Mrs. Lyons wasn’t an employee of Bonita Unified, SD would not have challenged. Because all the parties involved have history, Mrs. Lyons was the SD booster president last season, it became very personal. There is NO reason other than athletic and undue influence for the transfer. Sad for the kid but they brought it upon themselves.

  • Jimmy the Greek

If there is strong enough evidence of undue influence between Payton and Upland that Payton was declared ineligible for the year then there dam well better be tougher sanctions coming down on that individual from Upland exerting the undue influence equal to double that which Payton received. In addition the head coach needs to catch a piece of some of this punishment regardless of his deniability.
SHOUT OUT TO CIF – START DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILITY FROM THE ADULTS. ANYTIME A KID GOES DOWN FOR UNDUE INFLUENCE A HEAD COACH AND WHOEVER ELSE IS INVOLVED NEEDS TO GO DOWN TWICE AS HARD. IF NO COACH GOES DOWN THEN NO KID CAN GO DOWN.

    • Lupe

great post! In this situation if PEYTON was influenced then a adult is at fault and someone needs to go down.

  • In the know in the IE

Most of you people that are casting stones should look at yourselves. I am ashamed to be associated with you folks that are all know it alls. Its all fun to talk and kid each other back and forth about who is better team wise. But a lot of you have stepped over the limit bashing this poor CHILD Jake Peyton. SO what if Loyola, Corona Centinell, Vista Murrieta or Upland gets the kid— big deal. Its not the NFL or NCAA folks. Anyone talking about Zernikow the AD/Head Coach at San Dimas and the South Hills transfers or the “new” running-back coming to SD ? DO AS I SAY– NOT AS I DO

    • Highlander

From what I hear the SH kids left primarily to play baseball at SD. I was told they were JV football type players at SH at best and they are sitting out the required 30 days for football. As for the SG kid, I was told he moved. I am also under the impression that no coach at SD is associated with a 7on7 that is a feeder for their program and recruits kids to come play at SD. I’m also guessing nine of those players were league MVP and their parent is an employee of the district and former booster president of the program they left. You don’t know the whole story so stop acting like it. Once you get informed then maybe you can post something credible instead of something that has an agenda. The again, this is a blog and the level of validity in these posts is questionable at best.

  • Dmindy

CIF makes the rules, then enforces the rules. If it’s okay to transfer schools because you want a better look, then go with it. If it’s not, then don’t. Or suffer the consequence. It’s just the way it is. There has to be rules, and they have to be followed. Yea, parents do it all the time, and get away with it too. But some get caught up ,and others don’t. I love football, but it’s beginning to feel like BIG BUSINESS which will eventually take the fun out of it.

  • Joe Amat

People here are calling their coaches “vindictive and selfish who are ruining these kids lives.

Who’s vindictive? The coach, or the parent/guardian who decide when things aren’t just right – when a kid gets disciplined…coached…God forbid yelled at…they are going to up and “take their ball and go home”.

Both these kids are THE featured player on very good high school football teams who are perennial semi-finalists and more in their respective divisions. But we’ve got dads yelling on the way to the parking lot after a loss their kid is gone, writing emails to blast the coach…but it’s the coach who is vindictive?

And, New York…”socially motivated? He made 7 friends playing with these kids at Upland but he’s leaving a CAMPUS full of friends and supporters.

    • New York

Quantity over quality, Joe? (Not really your usual argument) Is the campus really full of his friends? Are these friends on campus likeminded enough to train the way Jake is reported to have been training this offseason? Who knows and who cares. Why can’t Jake choose his friends?

  • the truth

Steve Ramirez is an idiot. There are thousands of high schools across the country and the scouts don’t make it out to all of them. Stats and charts don’t always tell the whole truth about any certain player. If you have two running backs with the same talent and one has a wall for a line and the other has a bunch of kids that could not block the sun off themselves with an umbrella, who do you think is going to put up better numbers? That is just one of the many examples i could give. shut up STEVE. Your argument of “IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH, THEY WILL GET SEEN” is stupid. You should try coaching one day and see how hard it is to have some D1 coach take time and come see your kids. It is not as easy as you think.

    • Lupe

I actually agree w/ Steve, not many kids get missed anymore. if they do, there’s a proving ground right around the corner. J.C. football in So.Cal. is the real deal. Go check out a Sac game. It may not be ideal but you can still get to D-1….if the kids truly good enough.

  • GP AKA Green Machine

Where does this story go next? Any word on the next step for Payton? Is he going to challenge? Is he going to attempt to go back to SD. It’s his senior year, and the season starts in a little over a month from now…

    • Saints Fan

SD in Dead period until 8/7. First day of camp should be interesting if a reappearance happens. Honestly, I have a pretty good idea what a number of players opinions are right now, if he wants to come back, advice would be to NOT wait until that first day to reach out and attempt to mend fences.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Yeah, at this point that’s all he has left. In the big scheme of things, both parties need each other. It would be crazy to think pride would keep a family from coming back. If he returns…he could earn that scholarship to at least a D1AA or D2.

        • Saints Fan

So true Greenie, as a parent & Fan, it will be tough, but we are a completely different offensive team with / without him. On D he could help, but obviously he is a beast on O. Just my opinion, but the ball is completely in his court. IF he comes back in a contrite, sincere and genuine manner, I know those kids, they will make him earn it, but they will support him. Any ego or what not, he will not go very far down field with 10 guy’s NOT blocking for him. He is good, not that good !

  • smoothone4u

So word had it that this Scumbag Coach Set some TD record and told this Kid that He would never beat it and that he was not a D1 prospect. WOW! What a Dirt Bag! Way to be there for the kids. Then the Kids guardians move due to Financial Issues with there home and move to Upland and this So Called Coach says he isn’t going to challenge the transfer to Upland which is a school that is not only Not in There League but they aren’t even in the same division and have no hope of ever playing each other! what did SD and this Scumbag have to gain from ruining the kids senior season? Its no wonder SD Plays in the Lower division with this subpar coach. Way to Stay Classy SD! I hope J. Payton wins his appeal and goes on to have a great college experience somewhere.

    • Lupe

Way to stay classy yourself there bud.

  • Guest

What’s the word on the street? Another appeal denied?
