• Magic 8 Ball

Yeah, he doesn’t recruit, he attracts. Oh wait, that’s Asante’s line. Too bad Asante is already serving a suspension at SM for recruiting violations (according to an OC Blog) Apparently Asante posted what amounts to a “Help Wanted sign” for a running back on his Facebook page.

    • The truth and nothing but…

Can you post a link of the blog? Will like to read more about it.

      • AMAT 73

        TTANB,
Just click on the FANTASTIC PIECE line and it takes you to the write up .

        • Bulldogs have bite

I’m pretty sure he wants to have a link to the story about the Asante suspension mentioned in Magic 8 ball’s post.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

That would also be a key factor to go along with the kurt scoby transfer case, whenever that goes down…If Assante has been suspended for recruiting violation, could or would st paul challenge w/ their former coach in this situation…

          • Bulldogs have bite

I read up on that Asante suspension. According to that particular OC blog, it was a self imposed suspension by SM and not CIF. He made a facebook post simply saying something like “I still need a top notch running back so we can take down Bosco, Mater Dei etc…”

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Yea, but if it’s in the paper, CIF knows about this along with ST Paul admins. If a guy gets rightfully or wrongfully fired at one place, then is placed on suspension at another, the credibility of the challenging party is in question. You need the old coaches autograph don’t you? They would also have throw a few other schools unders the bus like cathedral. We all know mtown was a last ditch effort to play somewhere sadly enough.

          • Magic 8 Ball

It sounds like Mater Dei made a complaint to CIF but SM self imposed ahead of CIF. SM probably didn’t want CIF looking too far into the matter for fear of finding other skeletons in the closet.

          • Bulldogs have bite

It would not surprise me if CIF looked the other way simply because it was Mater Dei doing the complaining lol!

          • Saints Fan

Since you brought it up, that is the one question I have had. The Athletic Motivation aspect of CIF Blue Book is NOT addressed in the Forms that schools sign. It appears more along the “Undue Influence” aspect. So, could CIF in a case use public knowledge to make a ruling? We can use the Scoby scenario. His travels have been well documented in the LA Times & SGV Tribune. I am sure GM at CIF is well aware of every step he has made. He left St Paul in the middle of the season when the coach that brought him in was fired — that move OUT is Athletically Motivated. Went to Cathedral, Athletics, went to Alemany, Athletics, ended up at Monrovia , maybe Academic maybe Athletic. BUT regardless of what reason is for landing at Monrovia (friends, comfort, academic) the reason he left St Paul was because Football wasn’t working out. Could they enact the rule as the CIF Blue Book does not specify that these rules only exist if a school challenges. They are stipulated as the rules and in a high profile case as this, do they know enough to make a call. Just wondering.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I would leave st paul too…how do you pay for that?

          • AMAT 73

            GP,
The same way you pay for Cathedral and Alemany .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Lol…exactly…by scholarship? I really think none of these privates what him or care where this kid goes at this point… not even ST P. I think it’s the bloggers who care the most.

          • AMAT 73

            GP ,
Yep just waiting for ammo for the ambush towards MTown when and if the bad news hits .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Don’t count your puppies before they are born!

          • AMAT 73

            GP,
Believe me I know MTown will be fine either way , I’m just speaking of the riff raff out there that pounce on things like that .

      • AramT

That blue text you see in my post below the headline, just click on it.

      • Magic 8 Ball

I posted the link last night, but apparently it was deleted for some reason. I don’t want to post the link again because it will probably get taken down again. Google occonnect and you should be able to locate it with relative ease. The blog is made up of mostly Trinity League people.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

I’m glad you posted that. I talked about Asante and his self proclaimed “ability to attract talent” and was dragged over rusted nails because he’s never been called on the carpet in front of CIF for anything. My reply? Just because he hasn’t, doesn’t mean CIF isn’t watching.

I’m surprised he hasn’t been either.

Even the best bank robber eventually gets caught.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Almost forgot, isn’t this Welch’s last season at SM? Wonder if Asante is the man to take over afterwards.

      • mr power

no way asante takes over for welch.

        • Not So Fast My Friend

I certainly hope not. But I can’t imagine him making that move there for just a year. I’m sure the next HC will want his own OC unless the next one is already on staff and likes Asante’s work.

  • mr white

it’s just coincedence that all these kids show up at UHS(yeah right) kinda reminds me of Kleins tenure at Upland HS BB…coach h2o is the ringmaster of this circus…..not too difficult to figure this out

  • reality

It is difficult enough to compete with kids from your own program but when you add the possibility of kids coming from who knows where and greeted with open-arms then that’s not an even playing field. Such a policy may not be termed recruiting but I can think of at least one other word to describe what’s going on over there. They may win but to say your program is the best around at the high school level is pompous considering you have basically an all-star team.Personally I would not drive around the block to watch them play.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Salter IS pompous, so it’s no surprise. That’s not my opinion and I am personally not calling him names, but there are other coaches that view him that way.

  • no-step

They’re starting to sound like Amat. Rude and pompous.

  • GP AKA Green Machine

” I can’t really comment on Jake’s case but we just hope the appeals process goes OK…We anticipate if he has the opportunity to play, he could play a key role in what we do offensively”

When coaches use these words, it sounds like Jake was headed for a “role players” part. It’s a shame the Upland influenced his parents into ruining his senior season. This is the ugly side of when transfers go wrong. This coach is clearly open about his policies at least. He may be on the forefront of what high school football is going to become. It’s almost impossible to keep HS football recruiting from become the standard and no longer a trend.

    • AMAT 73

      GP,

I thought public schools cannot recruit ????? Prime example right hear , no matter what spin they put on it .

      • GP AKA Green Machine

“Can’t” and “don’t “are two different things….Besides Upland is not your typical public schools…I would say that most public school don’t and can’t recruit because they have nothing to offer athletically or academically. However, I think most would if they could. You have not heard of any players running over to Alta Loma. Keepel landed Marques Venezuela from San Gabriel…which almost never happens, but guess what they have a top notch Basketball program and Academics, which this kid went after. So I guess if you have the program and get away with it they do. If you are not good, then you don’t get the chance too…we all agree that the player should have to right to transfer, but do you think coaches have the right to recruit?

        • AMAT 73

          GP,
Can’t or don’t samething . They do it period . Now of course schools that have nothing to offer in the line of athletics and really this is not a question of academics will not the tools to recruit , but those that do use them . So on the recruiting field is it level with the privates and the publics . Before I answer your question , list what you would consider to be recruiting as that varies per a person’s opinion .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I would consider recruiting, a program or someone associated with a program contacting a player first after the 10th grade season. If they go after 8th or 9th graders so be it. I would not compare 90% of the public schools to Upland. 4000 kids w/ excellent existing talent pool. I would say Upland and schools like it are on the same level or even playing field, but not the masses of public schools in Southern Section. There is not question that the majority of schools can not offer the education that private schools can offer otherwise what would be the point? Plus most of the public schools are religious schools…so you have Great Ed/ Great Sports/ and Religious structure vs public schools with Decent Ed/ Great to poor sports….what do you think? Can’t and don’t are not the same.. I can run but I don’t run….I can’t run because I have not legs….I don’t run because I hate running…see?

          • AMAT 73

            GP,
Based on your recruiting guidelines I agree with the contacting a player but I would change it to once a player is enrolled in a high school . They could go after him in his freshman year and that would not be fair either . It is a fine line on what is considered recruiting . All the camps for 8th graders and below ( yes AMAT has them ) are basically a recruiting tool because what are you really selling . CIF has no issues with these as they are out in the open and all know about them . Videos and such as LM is pushing out this year are recruiting tools and again CIF can clearly see these and has no problem .Open houses for incoming freshman is a tool depending on what is presented to them , but many schools now have them and CIF knows they are being done so no problem .Many ways to legally recruit within the system . Just the fact of a school having contact with a player from another school about coming to their program to play for them is enough to penalize the school or coach . Like we all say a player should have the choice to move on if his school is not a good fit for him without penalties . On another note how should CIF punish the school found guilty of undue influence ?

          • GP AKA Green Machine

You bring up some good points.. advertising open houses to the public is clean, general, and not specific towards any program or player. It’s public and You are basically saying “This is what we are about”. I would hope that all schools would have camps. It teaches their players to give back….and it helps them see what coaches go through when coaching them. They see how hard it is to teach someone else instead of being taught. However, the privately run 7 on 7 workout groups, creates a atmosphere for players and coaches from various programs to mingle, and influence can not be avoided. Up until after the tenth grade, I think there is a grey area, because you do hear about kids not looking forward to going up to or staying on the varsity team at the school they attend. For what ever reason. However very few 10th graders have a huge effect on the varsity team. However, that first contact from a coach is still below the belt. If you are attracting, it’s more like accepting…if it can be proven that coach is going after players I think that is wrong. if a parent calls you and you decide to follow up that’s not first contact and I feel that is ok. They should penalize the head coach with 5 game preseason suspension the following season for the first offense, the 2nd offense falls on the Team and coach; with a 1 year suspension for the coach, 5 game preseason forfeit for the team. 3rd offense would be 2 year coaching suspension, no playoffs for the team in the current season. Your thoughts?

          • AMAT 73

            GP,
Suspension for the coach is ok but the team can still function as he can still get his point across to the team . Now if they hung a 1 game loss in league play for each infraction of undue influence on the first offence a coach might think twice about listening to the 7 on 7 coach or talking to a player , whatever it is they do . You got to make it affect the team also . But your ideas make sense also , if only CIF would get tough on the right people instead of the players .

          • Magic 8 Ball

If you hang any type penalty on the team then you are penalizing a large group of kids that had nothing to do with the infractions and for the most part probably don’t like all the “soldier of fortune” types infiltrating their ranks. I say just slap the crap out of the head coach and make the penalties long lasting.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

But if that “team” wins CIF with those players, the team benefits right?. The penalty will have to punish the program, otherwise so the entire institution will take it serious.

          • AMAT 73

            8 ball,
What do you think would be a big enough penalty for a coach found guilty of undue influence . 1-2 games , an entire preseason or maybe a whole season suspension . It has to be enought to make them think twice about putting their neck on the line for a transfer .

          • Magic 8 Ball

One year for the 1st offense and five years for a 2nd offense.

    • mr power

maybe i am missing something… but when was the last time upland won cif? there are a bunch of schools cheating their tail off but they still can’t win. bosco and mission viejo recruit any and everybody and still can’t win. it is a team game and a team of transfers just doesn’t get it done. if any of these transfer schools win the pac 5 this year which i doubt.

i will be there when de la salle whoops their butts.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

You are absolutely correct… The problem with multiple high profile transfers is 1… some could be selfish. They have transferred because they are looking out for themselves. 2. It’s hard to develop chemistry over the summer. If you have 4-5 transfers which believe they are the “guy” You are going to have to manage those egos. How do you win without role players? No matter what schools are playing against each other, they are all 17-18 year old kids, and if a team wants it bad enough, and plays great, they can take it from you…sometimes it’s about who’s playing together, more than who’s the better team on paper.

  • D-Mo

Not recruiting? That’s some hilarious BS, TS.
I do admire the program they have, though. You know, for what they do on the field.
With that many players, it must be a very competitive atmosphere during practice, to say the least.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

      It’s not.

  • Southeast follower

Kids are transferring to schools that will enhance their ability to get a scholarship and play football at D 1 school, rules are rules. Look at La Habra, even La Mirada does have all their players coming from one city. Private Schools such as St John Bosco, Serra, and others do not have players that are products of Catholic schools or parishes. So who is getting hurt in the process? Many of the kids that have worked hard for 3 years and now are getting bumped by a transfer, so should they transfer also to get playing time. Who is paying for this non-catholics to attend these schools and are they making a commitment to these schools to pay them back so that needy children can attend. The whole process needs to be looked at. The schools AD’s, Coaches, alumni, parents need to get their priorities together. And the sportswriters who glorify individual players not teams. Anyway just some thoughts.

    • big daddy

It should always be about the TEAM, NOT a individual. Look at St. Paul last year, howd that work out??

  • mr white

between the old AD (drake) and the football coach ,you can easily figure out who’s been running the school! there are @4000 kids on campus…can’t get enough football players from those numbers? maybe the “coaches” can’t really coach !

    • Not So Fast My Friend

And from an area where you’re the only high school. Interesting isn’t it?

  • Aaron

He’s obviously selling the: if they make us better, why are you hurt.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

I hope Aram doesn’t delete my post because all it says is:

    RRRROOOOOOOOOFFFFLLLLLL – LLLLLLLMMMMMMAAAAOOOOOO!!

I’m laughing so hard, I’m in tears. Is Salter a part time comedian because that’s the funniest thing I’ve read today!

  • AramT

Upland appears to be a school/football program that thinks just because it says something, it must make it true.

Remember, they’re the same outfit that put forth the following league proposal: Upland, Glendora, Chino Hills, Chino, Ayala and Don Lugo.

If you think you’re one of the better programs around, then why insult anyone with half a brain with a proposal like that?

    • GP AKA Green Machine

lmao that’s 5-0 and 4-1 for the next 10 years.

    • Saints Fan

Tra started at Wisconsin, then transfers to Sacramento State for his SR year

      • YouWantMoreProof

So….go with what you know? Lol!

  • reality

@Aram: That proposal is an eye opener. Other than coaches and parents, who wants to watch your team slaughter lesser opponents week after week? Gimme the Hacienda where last year no way you could predict with any certainty who would win on Friday night. To bad the powers that be are dismantling one of the most competitive leagues around. Stupid move.

  • Royal Blue Thunder

Meanwhile….at Bishop Amat….the Blue are preparing for a war of a season.

  • 12th man

Last I heard Asante was selected to lead the Southern Section all-star game in Jan. so he must be doing something right?

  • betruthful

Really tired of all the lies and back door deals in high school football. When is CIF going to investigate the coaches of Upland including but not limited to Coach E. So Upland has transfers in. Their qb who was supposed to be their “guy” transfer out because he was jilted. Now he transfers and tries to do the same to some other school? When does the cycle stop? This is just one of many examples on this blog. The transfers in and transfers out with intent to do the same to someone else at another school. They are not better than the transfers in. Stop already.

    • reality

Nice post. You are so correct. It’s like musical chairs and when the music stops some poor shlub has no place to sit.

  • TruTH

    Aram,
Will you be doing a top 10 list preseason positions?

  • mr power

yes i had read that. santa margarita was pretty bad before Welch got there… if Asante gets the job they will be bad again.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

What? You’re not impressed (yawn) with Asante’s ability to coach? Lmao!

  • no-step

Isn’t Coach Salter one of the cry babies who doesn’t want private school “advantages” or their ability to draw players from anywhere?
