FINAL 2013 All-Encompassing SGV(N) Top 25 …

frankie
FRANKIE FOOTBALL!!! ‘Nuff said.

1. La Serna (12-2) — Check the resume, it’s outstanding.
2. St. Francis (10-3) — Only losses: Serra x2 and Chaminade.
3. San Dimas (10-4) — One of the top 5 programs in the SGV.
4. La Habra (10-2) — Wonder what might have been if not for NH loss.
5. Charter Oak (7-5) — Same bottom line as past 2 yrs, but not as sexy.
6. Muir (11-2) — Stellar season and program is back on the rise.
7. Monrovia (11-2) — Bar is so high that ’13 was a disappointment.
8. Bishop Amat (6-4) — On the bright side, the future is, well, bright.
9. Diamond Ranch (9-2) — First-round loss leaves a bad taste.
10. Chino Hills (7-4) — Can’t allow 31 ppg and be successful.
11. Arroyo (11-2) — A simply fantastic program.
12. Glendora (7-3) — Had some seriously huge moments in ’13.
13. Los Altos (9-3) — Program continues to ascend.
14. Diamond Bar (7-5) — Most dramatic program in the Valley.
15. West Covina (5-6) — Had their moments … strange season.
16. Bonita (6-4) — Fell victim to insanely wild league.
17. El Rancho (6-5) — Sneaky good team had its moments.
18. Santa Fe (7-5) — Inconsistent, but very dangerous.
19. Pomona (10-2) — Good to see this program back in action.
20. La Salle (9-2) — Another flashy record, but no playoff win.
21. Rio Hondo Prep (11-2) — Ran into Salesian train. No shame.\
22. Montebello (8-4) — Solid bottom line results. More to come?
23. Azusa (10-3) — Back on top in Montview.
24. Rosemead (8-3) — Got back on the local map.
25. South Hills (5-6) — Shaky record, but some big moments.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Good assessment on all. Biggest disappointment had to be La Mirada, but sometimes it just goes that way. Biggest surprise and the most dangerous for 2014, St. Francis and Muir. St. Francis only losses were to Serra (twice) and Chaminade. That’s huge and makes for great momentum going into the off-season. Then Muir, left for dead, has the season they had? Incredible.

Weird and wacky season for sure, but that’s the beauty of sports. :-)

    • WCDan

Good points, agree with you on St. Francis and Muir, Coach Hardy (I think thats the Muir coach) seams to really be turning that Muir program around, they were tough in the playoffs last year when I saw them lose by 1 or 2 points against West Covina, then they go 11 & 2 this year and had Norwalk backpeddeling for most of the game in the semis. As for St. Francis I think most years Amat wins that game but this year may have been differen’t. CO and La Habra would have been close too, although this year I would pick SF in those two games. Thing is you can’t really know who would have won without the teams playing each other, even if they did, if it was early in the season it might be different at seasons end, for example San Gabriel beating a team in the semis that they lost too early in the season in 2011 or West Co beating a couple teams in the semis and championshipin 2004 that they lost to during the season.
I also think La Serna was playing good enough this year to give teams like CO and La Habra a run for their money. They were good enough that you couldn’t just automatically chalk up a win for CO and LH.

  • Matt Cabrera

IS SDHS FOOTBALL GOING TO KEEP PLAYING ?

    • Saints Go Marching In

No. They only got as High as #5 in Div3 South, top 2 play in the regional. Too many preseason losses!

      • OuttaYourMindTrib

I think SD did great. Bumpy start, got things figured out at the right time and won the rest of the way. No shame in that whatsoever. Besides, it’s GREAT to see a new face hoisting the trophy.

        • saints Fan

Next year no Bumpy start. Return most of Defense which was Achilles heal early in season. Front 7 Will be BEASTS…New QB will be plug and play, One RB will be impact play maker, gonna miss #5 in Big Way, Offensive Line most need to be replaced, that could be little bump.

    • Outside Looking In

Corona Del Mar went 14-0 and beat up on some upper division opponents doing so; they’re division 9. Their opponent, Nordhoff went 13-1 and they too beat up on upper division opponents; they’re division 10. San Dimas on the other hand didn’t win a game outside of their division 11. They need to schedule UP in the preseason and win those games.

      • Saints Go Marching In

The DID schedule UP, they just didn’t win those games. Funny how winning CIF doesn’t seem to be enough for people anymore.”I want more and I want it yesterday”

  • Saints Go Marching In

What will shape the success of teams more than anything is which leagues end up in which division. CO should be a monster in the SE division. Will Monrovia or SD stay in the MV division. Where is the new Pomona league going to fit in. How will Chino Hills be. What’s going to happen to Damien. So many questions. Let the debates begin

    • OuttaYourMindTrib

Chino Hills will go 2-3 in league and 3-2 in a great year. No more playoffs.

Ayala will go 0-fer in league and 1-4 in a great year. Been eons since a playoff appearance. None for the foreseeable future.

  • Gus Ramos

La Habra is not in the SGV.

    • AramT

      Really? That’s crazy! I didn’t know that.

      • J freerun Davis

        HA

    • Steve Ramirez

Whittier Daily News has covered for La Habra for as far back as I know. They are part of the SGVN area.

  • m ramirez

no respect for bp. if they wouldve had any kind of defensive coaching they wouldve won the games they lost

  • 12th man

Still voting for “:Frankie Football” for all encompassing player of the year~ Hands down!

  • Judge Smails

Wow. San Marino not on this list. 9-3 W-L record with an offense that scores in bunches – even against a number of your darlings. Losses are to #3 and #7 on your list and CV (by 3 points) which has a MaxPreps ranking materially higher than some in your top 15. I know, I know, the defense was not great (certainly not against its better opponents), but really, not in the top 25 in the SGV? Curious how Coach Z would rank the Titans relative to the other teams on this list SD played.

    • saints Fan

Around 17… Offensive line was one of the BEST we faced all year, yep said it… Defense, well, oh, QB was very athletic but toward end of year couldn’t take the pounding, your young QB is going to be a good one. Overall that’s where they would be, cuz won’t beat anyone above that line without some D.

      • Judge Smails

I don’t disagree – I would not lobby for higher. It is the complete exclusion from the list that seems punitive. Aram used the CalPreps rankings to justify, at least in part, his La Serna/St. Fran analysis. Per CalPreps, San Marino (9.3) is ranked much higher than Azusa (-2.4) and Rosemead (-0,2), slightly higher than Montebello (8.5) and the exact same as La Salle. The CP neutral site “game” projections have SM losing to Pomono and El Rancho by 1 point and Arroyo (his #11) and Santa Fe by 3. MaxPreps rankings are consistent with CP.
SM has made three straight play-off appearances, losing to San Dimas each year, the last two in the second round. They follow a 10 win season last year, losing a ton of seniors, and hardly miss a beat – some say with an even better offense than 2012 (which I believe is true statistically). They win the games they are supposed to win (although, admittedly, have not pulled off the big upset). Seems like a pretty good program by SGV standards.

        • saints Fan

Doing the right things for sure over there. Heard leading up to the game about the Offense being better than last year, but honestly, I didn’t see it on film and when I looked at the guy’s behind the line compared to those Beasts you had last year… I didn’t see it. Now, you take this years Offensive Line (honestly don’t know if they are all returners or not — assume no because did not notice them last year) and you put last years QB and RB’s — wow. Although I will tell you what, you had one RB who scared me in the 1st half, he looks very strong and has tremendous speed just didn’t use him as much in 2nd half or we just got a little better I don’t know.

        • AZTEC PRIDE

Good to see somebody actually mentioned AZUSA on the blog, other than myself! LOL… But to be mentioned as Leveler so to speak. Judge Smails, did San Marino win League? No…Okay you got passed the first round, AZUSA didn’t and loss to Torrance. San Marino got smashed by San Dimas 56-28 in the second round, season over. Azusa several years ago(2009) gets smashed by SD in the semi’s 50-24 and by the way that’s the same year we WIN SAN MARINO 27-24 in the first round of the playoffs! You didn’t see AZTEC PRIDE cut and pasting stats and lobbying for a better ranking. My opinion, winning League gets you on the ranking list and is a lot better then a second place finish in league, PLUS… has AZUSA higher then (24) AND (25)!!! GOOD LOOKING ARAM!

          • Judge Smails

No disrespect meant to AZUSA (congrats on your title), but clearly winning league is not a prerequiste to making AT’s Top 25. Lots of the teams on the list did not win their league; two even have losing records. Clearly, it is not a list based on who would beat who either.
One common SM-Azusa opponent: Duarte. SM spanked ‘em; AZUSA eked out a one point nail-biter. Of course, not terribly important – that whole common opponent argument. My point is and was that I disagree with SM’s omission from the list.

          • AZTEC PRIDE

Let me see here, do you think the Coach of AZUSA would rather Win the League or make ARAMS rankings list??? Uh… He probably don’t give a RATS A_ _ about this RANKINGS article. The only ones who probably care about these rankings are me and you, for our respected teams. I’ll say this though and i’m one happy AZTEC FAN to see AZUSA on this List.

  • Jefe

St. Francis is the #1 team. That’s not even up for debate. Carry on though.

    • SGV_FOOTBALL

@haroof:disqus in my opinion CO, BA, & LH still beat St. Francis this year.

      • Jefe

Amat at Kiefer, maybe. LH & CO? We will agree to disagree on that.

        • The stands

I, for one, would love to see Amat and St. Francis square off sometime soon.

          • AramT

Need somebody to point out the best win on St. Francis’ schedule for me. Ready? …. GO!!! … I’m waiting …

          • Jefe

            Good one, Aram!

I’m sure La Serna would have been competitive against Serra.

            Right…

          • AramT

OK, I’ll go first with La Serna … Westlake. Okay, now you St. Francis homers go …. give me yours … still waiting …

          • AMAT 73

Aram ,Monrovia was a huge win for SF !!!!! LOL . But please give us your biggest SF win . Can’t be anyone in their league , so who is it ??????

          • New York

            Not funny.

          • AMAT 73

            NY,
Actually trying to get GP out of his funk and come back at me . Got to get that boy posting again .

          • Outside Looking In

Oh, please! La Serna plays in the DEL RIO league! How many division champions have been crowned from that league??? That’s a weak argument.

          • FredJ

This is just me, but I’m more impressed with how St. Francis competed in two losses to Serra than La Serna’s win over Westlake. Look, I love La Serna and how in won Saturday’s title was absolutely incredible. But at this point both teams have great resumes so it comes down to who you think wins head to head on a neutral field. I’d take St. Francis. If St. Francis were in the Southeast, who would you have picked to win the tournament?

Would you take La Serna Aram?

          • AramT

That’s a TERRIBLE argument Fred. Are La Serna and St. Francis equals? Or is there a reason why St. Francis, a private parochial, plays in the division it does while La Serna plays in the division it does?

If they started on equal footing, you might have a point, but they don’t.

FACT: St. Francis didn’t win ONE game that was a considered an upset. The Monrovia game was nice, but tons of people had St. Francis winning that game, so not a shocker there. St. Francis didn’t win its league. St. Francis reached the semis.

I mean seriously, the best two things about the St. Francis resume are losses. Am I wrong? It’s that age-old Amat excuse of awarding losses and not crediting wins.

It was a great season for SF, but La Serna won a game against Westlake that they were definitely an underdog in AND they gave a very good Norwalk team its only loss of the season.

            Final CalPreps ratings:

            St. Francis 47.7
            La Serna 47.5

          • Valley Athletics

First game against Serra . 3 key defensive players missed first half . St francis scored 21 points . Second half at full strength totally different game . Second game adoree Jackson was injured and only came in game a couple times in second half . I would also pick La Serna over st francis .

          • Outside Looking In

Next you’ll be telling us La Serna would’ve done better in the Mission League than St. Francis too…
How about in the Serra League? Would they do better than Amat? After all, you’re putting them ahead of them too…
Would La Serna have faired better than Amat playing Amat’s schedule?

          • FredJ

That’s great Aram, now answer my question, who would you pick to win?

          • Manziel

Can’t we say the same about San Dimas? Did they beat anyone better than them this year? Five-loss Paraclete? They are ranked about all the Hacienda League teams that hammered them.

Seems to me that while San Dimas got better as the season went on, more of their success can be attributed to playing Nogales, Wilson, and Northviews for two months.

Saying that I think La Serna/St. Francis would be a great game. CalPreps has St. Francis (-6).

          • AZTEC PRIDE

Aram my comment went to the Modertor? Help…HAHAHA…

          • AMAT 73

            TS,
We have the opening and so do they , so it just might happen next season . The only problem will be when we beat them , all will say they would have beat us last year . hahahahahaha .All kidding aside I would really like to see that game also .
            Aram,
Maybe by you putting MTown above AMAT you can lure old GP out in the open . Now that gives him something to bay about .

          • The stands

            Amat 73,
In your honest opinion; does Amat beat St. Francis this past season? I say Amat wins at home but away…not so sure. I hope the two schools make the deal.

          • Valley Athletics

st francis had a good year . Don’t know how they will be in the next two years .Amat scheduled culver city who made the finals and lost to Lompoc 3 years ago . The next 2 years they where not the same teams and Amat destroyed them .

          • AMAT 73

            TS,
Yes we would beat them . The game must be played to get the true winner but I do feel we would beat them , honestly . That would be a great ESGV vs WSGV , since SF did dethrone MTown of that crown !!!!!!!!

          • saints Fan

I too would LOVE to see that game again, some of my fondest HS memories were playing the Lancers, them getting us one year, us the next. I was St Francis ’82 team all my buddies are Amat ’81 & ’82 . We still talk $#%^ on the golf course, love it. Except when Pernell walks in, then I shake his hand, wink wink

    • AMAT 73

      Jefe,
Congratulations on that first PAC-5 title . Watched it and I thought it would be closer but all that SJB beef started to weardown MD and it was a done deal . Enjoy and now on to state to take care of DLS .

          • Jefe

No, he wrestled. Wasn’t much of a football player. I didn’t mind.

          • AZTEC PRIDE

Okay… My niece went to Bishop Amat, and my Nephew played football for Charter Oak and does that qualify me to get on the betty bandwagon? LOL… MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!

          • AZTEC PRIDE

i’LL TAKE IT! hahaha Hands down, Bishop Amat is the best team in the SGV! That’s my opinion…

      • Not So Fast My Friend

Double down on the congrats Jefe

  • AZTEC PRIDE

Good to see AZUSA make ARAM’S FINAL cut of the season! Thanks ARAM, and yes there’s some football fans who appreciate it! AZUSA had a great season, won the Montview Leaugue title, beat Bassett, but only to lose in the First round. Oh yeah that hurts the team, coaches, and fans! Not much you can say on here, but all you can do is prepare for the next season and hopefully are better prepared to get over the first hurdle. Hopefully AZUSA can get some good transfers and do whatever it takes to WIN! AzusA has a big mountain in front of it and will have to chip away at it , season by season to find that winning formula! Monrovia is around 5 TO 6 miles apart and straight down the 210 fwy and whatever they’re doing is working! Hopefully Someday AZUSA!

    • AZTEC PRIDE

Figured out you can’t use vulgar words on ARAM’S blog, reposted my comment that nobody cares about! LOL…

  • RCSports

    Arroyo at 11?

Los Altos at 13 beat Arroyo.

Pomona at 19 blew out Baldwin Park and Arroyo struggled against Baldwin Park

Bottom line Los Altos up and Arroyo way down

    • AramT

Bottom line: Arroyo won league. Arroyo went to semis in its own division.

  • TruTH

    Realistic top 10 rankings
    1. St. Francis-Went far into the playoffs and lost to a tough Serra team
    2. La Habra- A play a way from going to the championship
    3. Bishop Amat- did not make the playoffs but still top team in the tribune area
4.Charter Oak- Good season and beat Los Osos while La Serna did not which is why they place over them.
    5. La Serna- CIF champs with good signature wins for a southeast team
    6. Chino Hills- Started off great but that lose to Damien looks bad.
    7. Muir- Great season with the team they had should make a good run next season
    8. Los Altos- Good season and went far in the playoffs. Beat San Dimas so which is why they are placed above them.
    9. San Dimas- Finished strong in their division but still cannot compete with the teams above.
    10. Monrovia- Big disappointment with the roster they had

    • Saints Go Marching In

There is only two teams on your list that won a ring and in the end it’s not about hypothetical who’s better lists. It’s all about the ring and we got ours. So put us 10th, 25th, say the entire hacienda is better because we lost to Bonita who didn’t make the playoffs. It doesn’t matter because we are raising a banner that says 2013 Champs. We won the games we had to play in front of us that mattered. I will say this, the only team I think we can beat ahead of us on your list is Los Al. We were tied at half with them and made sophomore mistakes that we didn’t make in the playoffs. Other than that we get beat by everyone else above us because we are small. But we are in our division for a reason, 1100 kids.

      • TruTH

Yes you are right its about the rings and congratulations to San Dimas and La Serna on achieving the goal every team sets out before the season starts. My rankings are based on which teams are realistically have the best chance of beating the teams below them. San Dimas did a great job of demonstrating that you can go 0-4 during preseason and still win the title. I have San Dimas at 9 because based on their results i feel the teams above them are much better and would have a better chance of winning. Of course this does not mean they cant beat them because its all possible. I still feel Los Altos would beat San Dimas, Los Altos dominated that game because of their defense. The offense as well had almost twice as much all purpose yards as the San Dimas offense. You can make the argument that San Dimas is not the same team that started 0-4 but the same can be said about Los Altos. Overall it was a good season and congratulations to San Dimas

  • True dat

Obviously this is the old “in your own corner of the world” rankings, because #13 (LA). #14 (DB) and #16 (Bonita) all thumped #3 (SD). If SD played in the Hacienda they would have finished in 6th place, looking up at Bonita who didn’t make the playoffs.

    • Saints Go Marching In

Sounds like a bitter bearcat who won the Smudgepot but is jealous of all the attention little brother is getting because they won CIF. Give it a rest. If you play the who beat who game then everyone could make an argument except…. No one. Because in the SGV everyone had a loss. SD was a different team week 10 than they were week zero. Get over it bearcat, you have a nice trophy, congratulations…SD has rings!!!

      • True dat

Isn’t that the old Monrovia line? “we got a lot better later in the season”? But then rational bloggers point out what really happened is that you just played lesser quality opponents.

        • Saints Go Marching In

Did we play lesser opponents, yes. But did we get better? With Rufus and Aguilar becoming eligible after the mandatory sit out period they added 1,000 yards of offense and 11 TD playing in positions that allowed other players to focus on defense. So yes…we got better even as the opposition got worse. All it meant was our games were over before halftime instead of right after halftime. Except for the championship game of course. Either way I’m excited to see the boys get their rings.

        • saints Fan

Ya maybe, and any other team that steps it up in preseason, so can’t go head to head with you on that. But for sure, Bonita game any other time but Week 0 with all the BS and it goes the other way. We play them weeks 5-10 and it is a totally different ball game. Mark my words, you will see next year when they play. Defense will not be a bunch of Soph’s who are poo poo’ing in their pants. Los Altos, we kinda gave away some tremendous opportunities, still young. DB, lot of speed we were not ready for, we also gave away a couple opportunities, not sure how much that would change later in season. Monrovia, is a toss up, not sure. Potts would have changed complexion for sure. Scoby get’s “dehydrated”, who knows, that game would have been a good one in Playoff’s. So we don’t finish behind Bonita guarantee that one.

    • Heights

Saints get better every year as the year goes on. Great job coaches. Bonita got worse and underachieved. DB Underachieved all year with that talent.

      • Inland

Dbar bonita and los altos all beat san dimas. Very weak league they are in.

  • reality

A true #1 is a team that dominates. One made block , one made tackle, one little bounce the other way and we are talking about Norwalk, Paraclete, Monrovia, Muir, or any of the other teams that lost in the playoffs and even a few that did not get in save for a bad bounce as being #1. Is Auburn really that good?. Would you take them if they played Alabama again? Two miracles put them in the title game. Often in football “1 comes down to a bounce.

    • New York

This is the year of the “Auburns”…over time the “Bamas” prevail.
