All-Encompassing SGV(N) Top 25 entering spring practice …

tyrekadams
Tyrek Adams is 1 big reason the Dena will surprise in ’14.

So yeah, this the opener for the 2014 season. There will be another after spring/before passing tournament circuit and another one after that and then a final preseason one right before the season in August. But don’t hold me to any of that either.

1. Bishop Amat — You know it’s scary when I’m more excited than Freddie.
2. Charter Oak — Worried about defensive losses, but offense is scary.
3. Glendora — Arguably the best QB around in Fink makes Tarty scary.
4. Muir — Your early favorite in the Southeast.
5. St. Francis — Heavy graduation losses, but program reloads well.
6. Chino Hills — Tons of skill back, but defense has to get better.
7. Los Altos — So much returning line talent. Another big year coming.
8. La Habra — The rumblings haven’t been all positive this offseason.
9. San Dimas — QB, top-two rushers gone. But D is loaded.
10. Diamond Bar — Noodles for a full year and loads of skill talent back.
11. Damien — Lost some studs on D, but RB Thigpen is real deal.
12. La Mirada — Defense has to get faster, but Lara at QB is nice.
13. West Covina — Yet another factor in loaded Hacienda League.
14. La Serna — Program is solid, but how do you replace Frankie Football?
15. La Salle — A tad concerned about proposed new league.
16. Monrovia — New coach, tons to replace. Cats are hard to decipher.

18. Rosemead — Tons of returners. Your early MVL favorite.
19. Diamond Ranch — Lost a lot to graduation, but always solid.
20. Arroyo — Hit hard by graduation, but program reloads.
21. South Hills — Will be in deep in new league.
22. Bonita — Might be hardest hit team by graduation.
23. Montebello — Trajectory of program is up.
24. Pasadena — My surprise team. You’ll see.
25. Maranatha — Lots back and Bogan running the show.

There is still a lot of transfer rumors out there from big time players . Most I hear wanted to wait for end of year because of track season . Charter oak loses some big time defensive line and offensive line guys . Chino hills Trent goens is going to anchor the defense . West Covinas Drew Gomez is looking good in passing circuit at Qb for BBT , going to be interesting how he does with pads . Diamond bar who knows who they will have . I think they also lost bryan lamb to Gorman also . Rumors are circulating that kanya bell is heading to long beach poly and Noodles might be heading to St. John bosco .Amats 2016 class will make a big impact along with some good 2015 seniors . Rumor going around that they might get a couple transfers in summer . Can’t wait for season . This Sunday is passing downs best of the west 7 on 7 tourney at cal state fullerton . A team made of Amat players qualified and will be playing the top teams in west coast . Not bad for the team without trey sidney , Tyler Vaughn’s , anthony camargo , christian Wiley and a couple I can’t recall who play on other teams . west Covinas Drew Gomez will be playing also for BBT .

    • TruTH

Isn’t Isaiah Bravo the starting quarterback for West Covina. I know both are sophomores but Bravo lead a West Covina into the playoffs when it looked like they were out of the race.

      • Valley Athletics

Yeah he was . Like I said let’s see how Drew does with pads . Gomez is making noise in passing circuit and team made the best if west . Will see who ends up as starter .

        • TruTH

I watched Isaiah Bravo last year and for a sophomore who hadn’t played a game till league looked really composed and throws a nice ball. I think Bravo has the advantage as starter but if Gomez has improved then it will be a good battle over the summer.

          • AramT

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I keep hearing about Gomez, but Bravo was the guy last year.

          • Bulldogs have bite

Bravo is currently playing on the JV baseball team. Perhaps this is why he is not playing in any passing circuits right now. Gomez is improving and this only means good things at West Covina, competition pushes both players to get better.

          • TruTH

Then that explains why we haven’t heard much of Bravo. It is still very early and some players are just finishing up baseball or track. Gomez and Bravo should help WC well into the playoffs. However my question for them is who will be the featured offensive weapon. In past years there was Solomon, Frazier, Love, Jones, Best, Salgado. This year however, there isn’t a player that comes to mind. That could be a good thing but it can also be a bad one.

          • Bulldogs have bite

That is a very good question. I assume Isaiah Love should be the next featured RB. West Covina always pieces together a solid offensive line for backs to run behind. I remain optimistic with the talent pool West Covina has. Some kid always steps up out of nowhere, much like Frazier in 2011.

          • AramT

No! It’s time for Isiah Love to be the man. He’s got the talent, you can tell that just by looking. That guy could be one of the best players in the area. In fact, I’m banking on it.

          • Bulldogs have bite

            I completely agree 100%!

  • AramT

    Valley Athletics,

Wow. Good info. Keep it coming.

    • sir lancelot

What’s your take on Bishop Amat.

      • Not Since 1995

Dont mind if I do step in here. They will be playing Thanksgiving week this year. Already spoke to Mamasita and the turkey tacos will be ready when they come home.
        AMAT #1

Dam this really feels good and the season has not even started yet.

  • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

AT why do you think the BA team will be scary good??

    • AramT

Because the combo of these two classes is a nice collection. The Super Sophs will be juniors. You have two guys with USC offers in Vaughns and Sidney. You have a guy who could be a freak in Vasquez. Camargo is one of the top all-around players in the area. I know QB and RB questions, but I think Garcia will be good. They’re pretty loaded all over and have the athletes to compete a top level.

      • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Here is another tidbit… They are coming together as a TEAM, not individuals as the case in my opinion of last years team. It should be exciting. BTW are you or Freddie making the trip to Texas??

      • Not Since 1995

Your right AT!!! Bishop Amat is scary good and I am coming out the closet this year. VIVA AMAT!!! BTW I enjoyed having my MAMASITA make the thanksgiving tacos last year. I am going to have to tell her to keep them warm this year cause unlike CH Poodles AMAT will be playing this year. I LOVE BISHOP AMAT!!! I just cant keep it in anymore. DAM I feel so much better now.

  • Manziel

    Scary, scary, scary!

  • OJneckslice

BA will be very good and looking forward to that BA/ CC matchup…the rest of these schools that ran from the Inland Division are just cream puffs

    • OnBLUE

LOL. Funny but we gotta remember that the vast majority of SGV high school football programs are just now venturing outside the SGV and are just now starting to realize the difference in level of competition.

  • TruTH

    Questions for the top 10?
1.Bishop Amat- we know they have the skill but what about their lineman. In recent years that has been a major issue.
    2. Charter Oak- They have Zion Echols returning but who will be the quarterback. Keep hearing that players are transferring out.
    3. Glendora- They have one of the top quarterbacks returning now they have to win league games.
    4. Muir- Mason and Holmes will be a great receiving duo but who will be the one under center?
    5. St Francis- Had a great year last season can it carry on into this year?
    6. Chino Hills- They have Goens that will be a monster this year but how will be their offensive weapon?
7.Los Altos- They have a great defensive line, probably the best returning but who will be the featured offensive weapon with the loss of Marcos to graduation.
    8. La Habra- Last year they had three impact transfers come in, not hearing much this season
    9. San Dimas- Lost their two premiere running backs and quarterback, the question is how long will it take for them to get acclimated into the system?
    10. Diamond Bar- Keep hearing that Hull, Lamb, and Bell have or will be transferring out. If that is the case then who will Tyler Peterson throw to?

    • Not Since 1995

Well I can say that the BA line averages about 6’2″ AND 260 TO 270 Pounds. That is one of the pieces that really makes it so scary.

      • TruTH

If that is the case then they are a scary team. Past years have shown us that Bishop Amat can take care of business in preseason but when it came to league, their line posed a problem.

      • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Great point. The line is the biggest I have seen in a long time. That was one of the biggest things to stand out when these boys were freshmen. Brayton/ the Lopez Bros/ another kid that came in from TC has to be 6’5″ 300+. And they have depth…

BTW- 95 Nice to see you speaking truthfully now. Welcome out of the closet.

    • PatrickHT

      They are all still there!

  • OnBLUE

Bishop Amat is also returning their leading WR from last season in Brandon Arconado who will be a Senior. BA’s receiving corp will be unstoppable if QB Damien Garcia can deliver. He was a great QB as a Frosh but saw very, very little time at the Varsity level last season thanks to Koa Haynes. Because of Garcia’s inexperience, BA needs to have a running game despite their D-1 receivers. The only returning RB from last season is Anthony Camargo. And granted, he was BA’s leading rusher, he only had 459 yards on the season and will be needed and expected to dominate (like last season) at linebacker. BA cannot expect Camargo to start and be successful at both the RB and the LB positions….not at the Pac-5 level. Last season, he appeared to run out of gas by the 4th Quarter which is totally understandable considering the level of competition BA faced. We need a true RB and any new info would be awesome. All this talk of QBs, RBs, and WRs will be for nothing is BA does not have a good OL.

    • Not Since 1995

This team is stacked and there are more than enough kids to where guys (Except #3) dont need to go both ways…

    • Valley Athletics

Isaac archer will be back also if he doesn’t decide to concentrate on baseball since he will be the ace next year . Running back has camargo, torrie sweet , kiman benson , trey carter and tre sidney who can run when needed . Havnt heard of any class of 2017 players moving up but there was some good ones . Not as much in numbers as class if 2016 but a couple that can possibly contribute .

    • sir lancelot

Well if you have been watching Wednesdays practices toy would see that they have Camargo at RB. Amat is stacked this year and have many players that will contribute at LB. They got Wiley and new comer Matt terlizzi who I expect will play a big factor
I’m the defensive scheme. This team is going to be well prepared with a great coaching staff. Amat has always had a great coaching staff and talent was ok. Now across the board, these boys the coaching have are by far the best Amat has seen in a long time. Looking forward to a great season. Amat will shine!!!

      • Not Since 1995

Well if worst comes to worst the kid by the name of gucci bear can play TE as well…

      • Valley

Terlizzi is a non factor. Should be at San Dimas. Will not crack the starting lineup at Amat. Have fun on the bench.

        • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Your right. I bet San Dimas would have been happy to get that kid. LOL

    • Bobby

They need to play Camargo at TE. Mis match for opponents all game long. This way he still remains healthy to play def. Look at the way the NFL is using TE position. I can see Amat using Camargo the same way.

  • CoFan

Aram, what do you predict will happen in the loader Hacienda? And why do you have Los Altos so high if their best offensive threats are gone?

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Los Al has some studs on defense… Look at the kid on the Trench Hog blog.

    • AramT

Best offensive threats are gone, but I like the potential of the guys behind them. Lorenzo Silva got time at QB and he showed potential and is a big kid. Hayashi and Sina will both be back at RB and that huge frosh kid will be up. Leading receiver is back in Amir Avery. All that and both lines are outstanding. Real good looking team.

      • UTR

I heard Los Altos got a running back transfer from Bishop Amat

        • Valley Athletics

Yeah they got a good player . Gabriel perez . Didn’t see much action at running back , but is a good back and will help Los altos .

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Agreeed. I would have liked to of seen him run behind that big A$$ AMAT line this year.

          • AMAT 73

            VA,
Haven’t had a real good look at the team yet but is Benson the pick for RB this season , he played a little at the end of the season after his sit out period and looked strong .

          • Valley Athletics

It’s to early to tell . Camargo is leader now , but they have many options .

    • TruTH

My early hacienda league predictions are Los Altos and Charter Oak battling for first and second. With West Covina coming in at third and Diamond Ranch at fourth. Chino and Walnut will be battling not to finish in last place.

      • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Aside from Zion, CO aint got nada!!! And it seems like big lous been cut off from Dena , Mo-Town, and Duarte.

  • Jefe

When you see this much BA homering you know that Spring is here.

    • sir lancelot

You got that right! With the talent out boys have why wouldn’t we be excited

      • Jefe

        You have talent every year.

        • sir lancelot

Oh but this year is special and the fallowing year. I love it!!! If aram is saying it then you know it’s going down

    • Not Since 1995

If you read my post from prior years you know I was not an AMAT fan, but things change and i take exception to that now. Amat has a stacked team, and my CH MUSKIES are going no where quick so I am jumping on the wagon. We got room for you to senor jefe…

      • Jefe

        LOL!

If you knew who my team was, you’d know I have no reason to jump ship.

        Thanks for the offer though.

        • Not Since 1995

Well the offer is there for you brother.

        • Not Since 1995

Who is your team by the way. Will they play the BIG BIG BLLUUUUUEEEE this year? Gentlemens bet??

          • AMAT 73

First off you are not the real Quasimodo , and if by chance you are , there is no room for you on the bandwagon , bus , cart , or any other form of transportation , just stick to your puppies .Secondly, Jefe is a bonafide SJB fan , so your barking ( pun intended ) up the wrong tree

          • Jefe

AMAT 73, give me the official scoop. How loaded is your team this season? I’m hearing a LOT of hype.

          • Not Since 1995

Well I would say Hags team, is locked and loaded…

          • sir lancelot

Amat 73 doesn’t know our kids and what we have. He sits in the end zone just pointing fingers. Plus who made him mayor of Amat??? He needs to show up to know what we have

          • Jefe

The fact that he’s a non-delusional Amat fan who usually tells it like it is, I value his opinion over the horde of homers who infest this place.

          • 1st and goal

Sir Prancelot, you need to relax. You are obviously a proud parent of one of the “super Sophomores”. This is what, your 2nd 3rd year with the program? Do you sit off to the side during the Wednesday night practices with the rest of the comadres? AMAT73 is alumni and I’m sure knows a thing or 2 about the happenings at practices. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

          • sir lancelot

Ok 1st and 100 you got that right “super sophomores” is what you will be cheering for on Friday nights. So sit back and enjoy the ride.

          • 1st and goal

            Typical

          • Valley Athletics

They will be juniors so that super sophmore title has to change .

          • sir lancelot

            True let’s ask aram

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Jammin Juniors!!!! Or Johnny Juniors. Take you pick they are a good group of kids along with the newly crowned “Super Seniors”! This gonna be good!

          • sir lancelot

By the looks of it you must be one of those junior parents that are hating on them “super sophomores” cuz ur lil Johnny don’t get any attention. I’ll save a seat for you in Texas

          • AMAT 73

            lancelot,
And how long have you been sitting in the stands rooting on AMAT ? Will you still be here after your kid is long gone , I’d guess not, unless you have another one coming down the pike . What’s with the infighting against other AMAT parents ? You must be of the nation and not The Family , bet you even have one of those t-shirts some fools had printed up . Just enjoy what I’ve been enjoying for the past 40 something years . By the way are you alumni ?? Also 1st and Goal’s kid starts so he may be keeping your boy on the bench . Either way enjoy the season as it should be great . AMAT WILL SHINE !!!

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Come on guys it’s about the boys on the field. That is the only thing that matters. And we have what looks to be a great team in the making and that is what we need to stand behind.

          • AMAT 73

            LJ,
Has nothing to do with the LANCERS on the field . I stand behind the team and school 100 % and have been doing that on these blogs for quite some time . Some of these newbies get a little carried away and bad mouth LANCERS on the field if they are not part of the super soph group . It takes all the players in the program to make up the team and they all deserve our support , not just the class of 2016 . See below for an example .

          • sir lancelot

Look at ur buddy 1st and 10 at the above comment about the super sophs, and his previous comments about the sophomore parents.

          • sir lancelot

Yeah yeah yeah, im assuming 73 is your age. 1st and 100 is probably one of those chismosos. And what’s the attack on the mothers and fathers that wear them shirts??? Some of those parents are proud of their son. So you as an alumni looks like you are part of the “nation” and not the FAMILY. One thing I do agree with you is that AMAT WILL SHINE!!!!

          • AMAT 73

            lancelot,
FAMILY , always have been and always will be . This nation you speak of has kind of fallen off the map if you ask me and those shirts are far and few between being seen at the games lately . Like I said you will probably be gone in a couple of years , just as fast as you have surfaced here so enjoy your time here. I can see you are not an alumni by your math and grammar skills , so no need to answer that question . At least we do agree one thing . Anyone can be part of the nation but only few are part of the FAMILY . Do you happen to be a Beatles fan , or are you just stuck on repeating yourself ?

          • AramT

What are these shirts you guys are referring to?

          • sir lancelot

Has the kids last name with their number

          • AramT

Ok, I don’t get it. What’s the big deal? It promotes individuality? Play for the name on the front of the jersey not the back? That kinda thing?

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

I guess the parents are not aloud to support their lil ones. One nation, one family. Who cares homie we live in the same house albeit for a couple years or like Big 73 or maybe it’s 83 for life. Hats off bro. #30k

          • sir lancelot

Exactly! But Amat 73 chooses to feel different. Smh

          • sir lancelot

Yes grammar police anything you say. You have no clue. Check your grammar as well. Don’t cast stones at a glass house if you yourself live in one.

          • AMAT 73

            Jefe,
As I wrote to VA , I haven’t seen as much as I’D like but I do know the line on both sides of the ball are good size and will be able to bang with the best of them and not get manhandled as in past years. If we get the running game back in gear , that will be the key to success of the offense . Maybe not like in years past but at least enough to take some heat off the passing game, in other words a more balanced attack , but with the edge to the run . Can’t help it I’m old school AMAT . We need to get away from letting the QB run so much as to it not being a standard but more of a option when it’s clearly there . Defense will be our strong suit and I hope someone really steps up at RB to keep Carmargo mainly on D with spot play on O , Hopefully if they play and gel like we all think we see you guys later in the year .

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Whoa, whoa, whoa…. Why all the hostility??? Maybe 95 has finally realized that if you cant beat them join them. He probably just got tired of being a dumb A$$ and wants to join us here… The way I see it is I rather you jump on board now than claim the fame in the end… You Angel, Dodger, and Clipper, but used to be Laker fans know what I am talking about… Notice I did not mention the Raiders… The tide goes in waves and I think AMAT is bought ready to take their turn on the ride.

          • Not Since 1995

Thanks for the stand in here Johnny. AMAT NATION!!!!

          • AMAT 73

            Little John,
If you believe that’s notsince then I’ve got a nice bridge in New York I’d like to sell you , great price since you are an AMAT fan . Come on , you know this is not the one and only village idiot . Just wait for the season to begin and also get a little warmer and he will come out from under his rock .

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Yeah it’s probably not but looks like some stole his tag so that should piss him off and put a smile on the amat nation.

          • AZTEC PRIDE

Thanks AMAT 73, what a joke Not Since is!

  • SpartanFan

Aram, what are your thoughts/predictions for Damien this year? You have them 1 place shy of top 10.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

That was a typo… He forgot a zero at the end. Should have been number 100. Thought you had it rough in the Big boy league, cried your way out to the inland??? LOL Good luck with that.

  • Sgv for 30 years

Really you’ve got to be joking. I love football as much if not more than the next guy. But a top 25 in April seems like a huge waste of time. How about spending more time covering winter and spring sports. You guys totally BUTCHERED the All-Valley team in basketball according to coaches I have talked to. There are some impressive marks for track and field in the Sgv. Some of them are among the best ever (in the area), But they have gone largely un-noticed. When was the last time a duel meet was covered, or meet results in the paper?
How can you possibly have a top 25 in April, and who really cares. This is a huge waste of time and totally unrealistic. Amat 1, Charter Oak 2, there is a reach. With all the guys that are suppose to be leaving and a new coach, how can you have Diamond Bar in your top 10. We are more interested in how CO finagled their way into the Hacienda League once they figured out they really couldn’t hang with the teams in the Inland Division. Now we will all have to hear how great they are next year while they beat up on lower division teams.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

So sgv 30… Who would you pick as number one other than the best team in the valley AAAAAAMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT!!!!!!! But I do agree that C-NO is a reach…

    • sir lancelot

Take a back seat sgv for 30 years. Remember football is 24/7 if you haven’t noticed there is 7on 7s going on, camps, and also there is a lineman camps like the great Brigham Harwell’s. One of SGV’S finest players that hosts his camp every weekend. Your school probably didn’t make the list.

    • Lupe

This is Inside the Huddle, plus this thread has the most posts of any other. They must know what to write about.

      • sir lancelot

        Nice!

    • Frank Castro

Well SGV I kind of agree with you as that we need more coverage on Winter and Spring Sports. It may only be April but from the number of responds to this topic, this may not be Texas but Football is King!

    • Tan K Solot

But CO did OK in the Inland whether you want to believe it or not. Nobody expected them to do as well as they did.
As for an early start on Football’s top 25, it’s never too early. Obviously you have some early opinions.

    • sir lancelot

      Wow!!! 78 comments in April

  • UTR

Surprised there hasn’t been any Monrovia bloggers complaining about how they aren’t in the top 10

    • Mean Joe Green

That is because we are used to the noise in April getting silenced by November.

  • Spartan Pops

Amat looks like a powerhouse this year. Damien should surprise quite a few in the new league, with Thigpen in the backfield and a very big line on both sides of the ball, several of last years juniors that have grown in size and speed due to the workout program that Paredes has brought to this school.

  • Sgv for 30 years

I’m in total agreement with most of you that football is king. But spring ball? C’mon Man, let’s wait until the dust settles this summer and see who ends up where before we start ranking teams. If you really want to get people talking, put Amat at #3 or 4. I think that would get way more responses.
To change the subject a little bit, what do you (Aram) know about this new 18 hour rule that CIF is about to pass?

    • Valley Athletics
