Former Rosemead QB Steven Nava transfers to Bishop Amat …

The open job to be Bishop Amat High School’s next starting quarterback just got more competitive.

Steven Nava, who started at quarterback last season for Rosemead, left the Panthers this week to transfer to Bishop Amat.

Nava threw for 1,199 yards and 13 touchdowns in eight games last season as a sophomore. He will join juniors Damien Garcia and Ryder Ruiz in the battle to replace two-year starter Koa Haynes.

Garcia, who was Haynes’ back up last season on the varsity team, appeared to be the favorite this offseason. Meanwhile, Ruiz guided the Lancers’ junior varsity team to a 10-0 record last fall.

Whomever the starting quarterback is, he will have a loaded cast of receivers to work with led by senior Brandon Arconado and juniors Tyler Vaughns and Tre Sidney, who both already have multiple college offers.

Nava’s transfer is just the latest blow to a Rosemead program that last offseason saw two of its top players leave for Cathedral. Sophomore Isiah Ah-Hing, who got playing time last season, will take over as the starter at quarterback.

The Panthers still boast a plethora of returning starters and are many pundits’ early favorite in the Mission Valley League after going 8-3 last season.

Aram’s Take: One Rosemead insider told me that Nava is the best QB in the Valley. Hard to believe that when there’s someone like Glendora’s Matt Fink around. But point taken. They think he’s good. We’ll see if he’s Amat good.

Since when is the QB Dad an insider!

Never met or corresponded with his dad in my life. Try again.

WOW… Things just got interesting here…

  • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Nava is a great QB and can certainly throw the ball around the field. It will be nice to see what he can do with the receivers they have at AMAT.

  • observantcat

This is impossible, Not Amat, not a guy coming in from the MVL to possibly take a starting position at the most important position on the field. Say it isn’t so Amat fans. PAC 5, couldn’t be, well maybe it is. Good Luck Mr. Nava prove to your new crew that you can get the job done no matter where they discovered you.

    • sir lancelot

Get your head out of your a$$ mr Monrovia

      • observantcat

OK, Mr. LaPuente, I’ll take mine out if you take yours out. Maybe Amat should have coerced the kid from CV to come to their summer camp.

        • Not Since 1995

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….. Still playing the passing tourney up. I guess that is your only take… May be trying to deflect the attention of Blow-towns new playoff woes.

    • Not Since 1995

Is this “O” cat talking or Mean Joe Blow….. Sounds like the same guy here… Either way, yes good luck Mr. Nava! I believe someone said AMAT saw his talents first hand at the CO Passing tourney.

      • observantcat

Sorry No sense 95 AKA Amats Fallen Angel, Greenie and I are two different people who probably have the same compassion for the game of football as do other fans. Your focus is trying to be the blog clown and you have made a great name for yourself in doing so.

        • Not Since 1995

My Bad “O” cat. You are correct in saying the two of you have the same passion for being dumb A$$’s. So that was totally my bad.

        • sir lancelot

What. I find funny is that Amat has never had a problem with Monrovia on the blogs, ever since former students have transferred to Monrovia has there been so much comperasune between the 2. I’m pretty sure we all know who you are.

          • observantcat

Dude I agree, but you should go back and read all of your blogs then you will see what challenges a guy like me to make the responses that I do. Most of your Amat rhetoric is based on some sort of superiority complex, making statements such as (To much name dropping. What I find funny without naming kids names, this holds truth. If I stand corrected a hand full of kids transferred to Monrovia because they knew they wouldn’t start at Amat. You know that is true. And from what I here you have another 2 that might be making their way that way for the same reason.) Every high school has its ups and downs and both high schools have very good athletes and as good as Trey Sydney is he too would have to compete at Monrovia. As a matter of fact Ashaph Zamora is his favorite QB and has been working with him all summer and if he were back at Amat his chances of starting would have risen pretty high considering his work ethic. So the gist of this response is that most of the time guys like you and your new protege’ Not Since 1995 spend more time criticizing players in other Div. and put less emphases on your own players. So when you do guys like me will respond with a vengeance. So far there only two maybe three Amat fans I do respect, Joe Amat, Amat73 and Valley Atletics, they are your top end Amat Football Analyst not some egotistical couch potatoes.

          • Theblue&gold

You have got to be kidding me. Zamora the starter on Varsity at Amat? Watch Ryder Ruiz’s highlight video and then go and watch Zamora’s highlight video from last year, there is no comparison. Zamora is maybe 5’8″ standing on his tippy toes and Ryder is 6’2″. Ryder has a fantastic delivery and exceptionally strong arm while Zamora has a baseball windup and looks to be giving it everything he has to lollypop the ball all of 35 yards. If Zamora were still here on campus he would be best case 4th string on the Varsity depth chart behind Ryder, Garcia and now this new kid from Rosemead. The reality of the situation is Zamora would probably be 2nd sting on the JV team this year. Sounds to me like things are going to be pretty bleak over there in Green Delusional Land this year. This is Big Boy football here OCat not that 8 man flag football stuff you play over there.

          • observantcat

What 7 on 7 team are these guys on? Thought so, Kids do mature and when they do sometimes they far out play public opinions. Like I said, Zamora has played all summer with Trey and some of the Monrovia boys and tore it up, your guys will have a chance to prove themselves this season and if your starting QB does what he’s supposed to do then you should have a decent season while the other non starters may seek refuge elsewhere. i’ll take a Kid like this all day long.

          • Theblue&gold

Some of the better, more well rounded athletes choose to play other sports rather then get burned out playing 7 v 7. Plenty of time over the summer to get your game ironed out. Besides, anyone can pony up a load of money and play on a 7 v 7 team. Also, all the practice in the world is not going to put inches on your height.

          • observantcat

Now with that answer you have now proven my point with some of the Amat Fans, instead of looking at the situation and congratulating this kid you find ways to put him on your lowest assessment of a player who works hard, will play hard and will have the athletes to build his name in the next 2 years. Remember that Monrovia will posses the fastest receiving corp in the area by far and all this kid has to do is get any one of them the ball. Maybe you and Sir Lancelot should go see the priest and confess that what you are doing is call HATING on young boys.

          • Theblue&gold

Hello pot, can I introduce you to Mr. Kettle?

          • observantcat

By the way, where does it say that Zamora would start?

          • sir lancelot

Well said blue and gold, well said.

          • Theblue&gold

“As a matter of fact Ashaph Zamora is his favorite QB and has been working with him all summer and if he were back at Amat his chances of starting would have risen pretty high considering his work ethic.” – A statement like this suggests that you believe he would be the starter. It also suggests that no one else works hard.

By the Way fella’s HAPPY FATHERS DAY

          • sir lancelot

A statement like that smells like this is his dad

          • observantcat

Man you are funny, You’re beginning to make me think that I am talking to Archie Bunker. Please read my post carefully and give credit when or if you can to a guy who is steadily improving his game by whatever his means are. You forget there is no such City called Bishop Amat, just a school campus located in La Puente Ca. Most of these kids have great friends in the areas that they come from and having a friendship with a player who is one of Amats best isn’t a crime. No one said that he would start for Amat, I just believe that his improvement shouldn’t be overlooked because he wasn’t the favorite coming out of his Freshman year. Face the fact that this guy is a competitor and a darn good one at that. Who’s to say that he remains the starter at Monrovia, we have some pretty competitive competition over at MHS as well.

          • The truth and nothing but…

Observantcat is just a myopic Monrovia homer. He can’t remember half the BS that comes out of his mouth. He was comparing Monrovia to Concord De LaSalle on another site. Maybe they will make a movie about the Wildcats one of these day and call it “The Best of the Worst.” Neither Zamora or Nava will start at Amat. They are good (not great) QBs playing in below average leagues and divison.

          • observantcat

Here we go again with the Nuttiest of the Nutty from the blue and gold fruit cake package. If this doesn’t answer your first question Lancelot nothing will. The real measuring stick will be who finishes first and is offered a chance to continue his football at another level. All of these kids have a chance but when you sit at the bottom of your league and div. you may never get noticed.

          • sir lancelot

            Daddy to the rescue

          • Theblueandgold

I think they already made that movie. It was called Wildcats and playing the part of Observantcat was Goldie Hawn.

Good stuff Blue and Gold. Good Stuff!

    • AMAT 73

      Ocat,
What exactly are you trying to say . That someone from the MVL can’t fit in or play for AMAT ???????? Get a grip , I don’t think it’s ever been thought or said on the blog that a player from a lower division can’t play for the LANCERS . A team from the MVL couldn’t play in the PAC-5 for sure , but a player , no doubt in my mind they can and will .

      • jcaz

        Very true 73

  • Mr. Nieto

Finally you guys are paying the bills here…. I have made a choice and next year I will be taking my talents to….. Only time will tell. To be continued….

  • Valley Athletics

If he is better and wins the job it’s good for Amat . Garcia is very good and it will be tough to beat him out .if he does then it will be a good thing .

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Question number one is what’s going on at Rosemead that’s caused their talent to leave? Second question is who at Bishop Amat is going to be left without a chair?

  • Valley Athletics

Is Nava going to have to sit 30 days ? If he is that gives Garcia an advantage .

  • Valley Guy

Aram, what exactly is your hard on for this kid from Glendora? I’ve seen you post more then a couple of times that he is the best QB in the valley, so I decided to look up his stats on Maxpreps and his numbers for last year weren’t that impressive. In fact his completion percentage was only 48%. I would say the valley is probably in pretty bad shape if these are the kind of numbers that our best QB puts up. Not saying the kids not a good player, because I’ve never seen him play, I’m just wondering what it is that your basing you opinion on.

    • AramT

If you’ve got one better, I will listen. But I saw the kid play against Upland and his first TD pass of the game was like a simple flick of the wrist that went 60 yards and hit the receiver in stride for a TD. They beat Upland that night. They also beat Charter Oak because Fink rallied them late (maybe a tad lucky). You ask any coach in the area who has seen him and they will tell you he’s a rare talent. I’m pretty certain there will be no doubt about what I’m saying by mid fall.

      • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

A SIMPLE FLICK OF THE WRIST AND IT WENT 60 YARDS AND HIT THE GUY IN STRIDE? YOU’VE GOT NO CLUE..AT ALL….HIT THE BUFFET AND PHONE IT IN

        • AramT

Handyman!!! Your man crush continues! You just can’t stay away. And just like all other facets of your life, you offer nothing. A fat joke? You really had to dig deep. Now go fix a fence.

          • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

“and with a simple flick of the wrist that went 60 yards and hit the receiver in stride” enough said…guilty as charged…the BEST NFL qbs, don’t throw it 60 yards with a flick of the wrist! charlatan…but a pet, name him/her/it clue…then you’ll have one

          • jcaz

Aram. I haven’t chimed in in a while, but all I got to say is wow. Fist of all we got “Non-Sense” acting like a changed man, then we have a few new bloggers and a few left overs as well acting just as silly as they were the last time I hit this blog. Funny how things “mostly” stay the same. Anyway, I noticed that Amat posted it’s football schedule for next year. Any chances one of you guys are headed down to Texas in early September ?

      • Valley Guy

Not sure about who all the QB’s that are returning next year, so I can’t help you out on that question. However, I did go back and looked at this kids numbers vs. Upland and they were his best of the year but the following week he laid an egg vs Rancho with only a 35% completion ratio. In short his numbers imply that he is inconsistent. Also, If we were to judge all QB’s by arm strength then a guy by the name of Jamarcus Russell would have to be the best QB to ever play in the NFL.

        • OuttaYourMindTrib

Numbers don’t tell the whole story about a QB’s greatness or lackthereof.

Bad numbers could indicate a below average receiving corps. Good numbers could indicate an above average receiving corps. Unless folks are breaking down the kids’ game film over the course of a season or two “best in the valley” is nothing but irresponsible hype.

      • Valley Athletics

What about that La Salle Qb who the recruiting sites have been talking about . I have not seen him , but hear his name mentioned a lot .

      • mr.no it all

I am ready for football season to start. This is all about nothing!

  • Sports News

No big surprise his dad was shopping him everywhere in the Valley just so happened one of the assistance are really really good friends with Nava’s dad and thought they would take a chance on him since Amat other QB’s can’t hold a candle to ANY Jr. All-American QB!

    • Valley Athletics

really … Garcia is a great QB and it’s going to be tough to beat him out . It’s a risk for Nava transferring .to get the job he is really going to have to be the best Qb in the valley . I saw his footage and he looks good .Garcias ability to run and throw gives him the best shot . Plus if Nava has to sit 30 days , it makes it tough to beat out a Qb not being able to play preseason games .

      • The truth and nothing but…

        I agree with you.

      • fb102

What makes Garcia ‘great’? He barely sniffed the field last season.

        • Valley Athletics

          What makes him not great?

  • OnBLUE

1,199 yards and 13 touchdowns in eight games is impressive for a Soph QB regardless of school.
