Villa Park won the consolation championship over host Bonita.

GAME OF THE DAY: Pomona beat Bishop Amat in pool play after Eric Harper intercepted a pass in the closing seconds of a tie game with Amat driving. The win gave the Devils two points and led to a 34-32 final. Pomona jumped all over Amat early but the Lancers found their sea legs and battled back and were on the doorstep of a win before the interception. Kudos to the Pomona fans who ran their smack earlier this week. The Devils look real, real good. Nobody in the Miramonte League is touching them and they look like real legit Mid-Valley Division title contenders. Lotsa talent. Amped up coaching staff who looks to have a good thing going on. As for Amat, QB play looks to be a serious issue as of now. A lot of guys broke open, the QBs saw it too late and the balls got their too late. But that’s what all this is for … so hopefully things get better. Both Amat and Pomona went 4-1 in the pool.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Pool A, B, C, E, look to be the most interesting. Pool D with Norco looks like they have the easier route. But I readily admit I’m not familiar with Workman or Valencia.

Pool A. Damien is a must watch as well as Monrovia. It will be interesting to see how Bonita looks as well as Santa Fe. Favorites: Damien and Monrovia.

Pool B. Bishop Amat is always an annual watch list member. Chino Hills should be interesting to watch for a variety of reasons which include their QB and skill guys on both sides of the ball. Pomona is interesting being if they can capitalize on the momentum from last season. Favorites: Bishop Amat.

Pool C. The biggest questions are Etiwanda, South Hills and which Culver City team shows up this year. Etiwanda appeared to be on the road to a resurgence last season. South Hills is always competitive but needs to have the pieces in place to get over the hump they seem to always run into. Culver City, talented, but erratic. Favorites: South Hills and maybe, just maybe Etiwanda. I like Culver City, but they’re too much of a wild card to be counted on as a sure bet.

Pool D. Norco is a watch list candidate. Glendora, another talented team that made huge strides last season. Carrying that experience over into this season keeps them on my watch list as well. Jurupa Hills lost their highly touted QB and now have questions at that position. Favorite: Norco, but Glendora could be very close.

Pool E. I’d call this murderers row with Charter Oak, Crescenta Valley, Cathedral, Los Osos and Ayala, but the only one that’s done that type of wet work consistently has been Charter Oak. This should be one of the more liveliest pools for the tournament. Charter Oak never seems to be in a restore type of position when it comes to talent. They just reload annually. Kudos to the staff for that. Crescenta Valley always looks good in passing league tournaments. They carried that consistency into an 8-2 season last year. Cathedral looks like they’ve started to turn the corner from a few drab seasons with a nice talent influx. Los Osos enters into a second season with a new coaching staff. There should be lots of improvement in them. Then there’s Ayala. Favorites: Charter Oak. But I’d keep an eye on Cathedral and Los Osos.

    Interesting that Upland isn’t participating.

    • Valley Athletics

Upland, Rancho Cucamonga and Servite missing from last year .

    • Mean Joe Green

The results of Pool A was Monrovia 5-0, Damien 3-2, Santa Fe 3-2, Walnut 1-4 and South El Monte 0-5. Monrovia beat every team by no less than 26 points. Their highest point difference was against Walnut and South El Monte. They beat them both by no less than 50.

      • Not Since 1995

With a pool like that I would hope so.

    • JDAWG

West Covina didn’t participate even though… they have a good team this year.

  • OJneckslice

Pool D…I think Valencia is the favorite…although I hope my Norco team shows well…

  • Amat Dad

    Ryder! Ryder! Ryder!

    • Not Since 1995

He had a few good moments…

    • Blue&Gold95

Thank you, Ryder needs to be the starter hands down!

      • AMAT 73

        AMAT dad & 95,
Please explain how and why you think Ryder should be the starter . I have a hard time understanding what you base this on unless you are a relation .

  • Valley Athletics

So Aram , who do you think did the best at Qb for Amat .

    • AramT

Uh … probably Garcia. Kinda scary if you’re Amat that the Pomona QB was the best one on the field. Wasn’t a great game vs. Pomona. Thought Amat looked a bit shaky in the back of the defense, too. I’m sure the Amat QBs will get better with more time … but I’m sure this isn’t where the coaches wanted to be at this point.

  • Observantcat

Monrovia’s Asaph Zamora looks like the real deal, Like I said earlier, High School Ballers in this day and age take advantage of outside resources to better themselves and their talent doesn’t stop at their Freshman or Sophomore Years, thats only the beginning if you plan on contending into your college years.

    • Valley Athletics

Heard they where to athletic for everyone in that pool .

      • Mean Joe Green

FYI Lance-A-Snot that is not his father dumb A$$. You are a fake A$$ Bishop Fan because no true fan on this blog takes the time to knock other kids when they accomplish good things. Monrovia did what they were supposed to do today. They went in and beat teams that were simply not a match for them athletically. Not a single M-Town fan has commented on the results of your team, because simply put……we don’t care.

        • Valley Athletics

Answered wrong guy I believe .

          • Mean Joe Green

            LOL. My mistake Valley.

        • Observantcat

Thanks mean Joe, I am certainly not Zamora’s Dad but I do give him and his family a lot of props for building up his ability’s to take over a team like the Cats and showing how athletes can accomplish any goal they set out to accomplish if they choose the right paths. The Amat hater contingent will be out in force especially when Pomona proved to be a tab bit better today in their pool. I truly believe these guys couldn’t care less about their team because they only have crazy shyt to say about others and never anything positive about some of the guys they should be giving their props to. Guys like yourself and other Monrovia fans along with some of the more knowledgeable Amat fans can take lumps when deserved, but these tweebs come on here with nothing but negativity towards players who are proving them to be complete A-HOLES simply by playing the game. So Mr. Lancelot tell us something good about today…. do you feel your team lived up to your expectations, oh and were all of you players on the field today?

          • Not Since 1995

Yep. They were. We can admit that. Just hope there d coach does not roll over and croak of a heart attack with all that yelling… Thought they won the Super Bowl…

          • mr.no it all

Pomona had yall down.30 to 6 at one time

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

And the final score they won by 2. The score in the beginning and middle means nothing, marbles…. They won it’s still a w for p-town. Hats off to them, hope we get a chance to play them again. If we don’t then it is what it is. We will hold our heads up high and move on. As one bright person said on an earlier blog it is just 7:7 at the end of the day and PAC 5 championships are won with 11. This however is great work for all the kids and it only makes them better. So good luck to you at Pomona and Mo-town this year. I know you all will have a great season based on what I heard and saw yesterday. AMAT will be fine and all they haters can keep on hating.

          • Mean Joe Green

            Indeed! Thanks for the perspective.

      • Observantcat

Well, Valley Athletics let’s just put it this way, this is going to be by far an upgrade at the skill positions this season especially when it comes to SPEED, there was no match at all in our pool. Pomona vs. Monrovia might be a great game in terms of skill players but I would give Monrovia the edge in terms of depth. I give a lot of credit to the kids for putting in the work, from running track to competing in combines and 7 on 7 teams. As we know everything changes when you put the Pads on and for the life of me some of these teams need to high the weight room. Overall this should be a very interesting season for all of the teams in the area. Monrovia will be the only team reping the West Valley this season so I expect a challenge all the way through the playoffs and from our own league team San Marino which will surprise a few teams this season.

        • Mean Joe Green

This is like a coming out party for the enigmatic M-Town. I really want to see how our talent matches up against Pomona, CO and Amat. Win or lose it will be fun to watch.

          • mr.no it all

I would like to see that u may get yo wish that coach that do DBs he gone go crazy,,,lol Be ready

        • Valley Athletics

Yeah it’s really hard to gage how good a team is going to be off 7on7 . Monrovia kids are the most prepared because of the TNT team . Cathedral I am curious to see also because they also have a offseason team with bunch of skilled players.. This could turn out to be monrovias best team or everything can change when pads come on.

          • Mean Joe Green

You make a good point Valley. M-Town has been on the 7v7 circuit for months so that should pay dividends. It will be interesting to see how we fair against teams with as many if not more horses than us.

    • sir lancelot

Oh God here we go again. Daddy to the rescue

      • Mean Joe Green

FYI Lance-A-Snot that is not his father dumb A$$. You are a fake A$$ Bishop Fan because no true fan on this blog takes the time to knock other kids when they accomplish good things. Its one thing to knock a school, its team and its program, but to continue to knock one kid is getting really old. His father must have done a real number on you for you to have so much hatred in your heart. Since you seem to know him personally, simply give him a call and air it out. As for Monrovia, we did what we were supposed to do today. They went in and beat teams that were simply not a match for them athletically. Not a single M-Town fan has commented on the results of your team, because simply put……we don’t care.

        • sir lancelot

Look it here mean Joe moco

It seems like every blog this guy raves about this kid. I’m sorry but he must be related to him cuz that’s all that comes out of his mouth.

    • Oh please

Please tell me he has more arm strength then what I saw today. I’m not sure he can get the ball more then 25 yards down the field on one throw. “Outside Resources?” a million dollars isn’t going to make this kid any taller or his arm strong enough to get the ball down the field more then 40 yards.

      • Mean Joe Green

How many usernames can one guy have. You didn’t see a single game today, because if you did, you would have seen Zamora throw forty yard strikes on the first play of every game and hit his target in stride. By the way, if you were there today that means you either have no job or you were a part of one of the five teams we completely embarrassed today. Good luck in your regular season.

        • Not Since 1995

          • Observantcat

Even bigger shame that you lost to Pomona, What Div. are they? That means you lost to a team in a lower Div. than Monrovia, get a grip before coming on this blog and loosing yourself in your delusional fantasy about really wanting to be a Wildcat fan. Since you seem to forget about your team so quickly.

          • 4peat

this is really kn big deal..only to let teams out there kn..that monrovia got a lil something..over here

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Why and how is it a shame? I don’t understand what you mean? Is the tournament over after one day? So really we have not lost anything yet, nobody has.

          • Mean Joe Green

No one but your friend Lance A-Snot is making a big deal out of anything. M-Town fans have done nothing but “big up” our school and refrained from talking about anyone else. We know the real competition is today, but if your going to criticize us about winning against low level teams then expect us to fire back about Amat losing to low level teams.

          • sir lancelot

            Mean joe moco

Sorry you guys couldn’t stick around to watch us kill Valencia. Next time bring your big boy pants.

          • Valley Athletics

No need to go there . Monrovia was pretty impressive . Any team that made it to semis is the real deal . Hats off to Monrovia , charter oak, Pomona , Glendora and of coarse Amat . All teams had some good performances along the way .

          • Observantcat

Thanks VA, said like a true sportsman. A lot of these kids found themselves in this event and should bring it to their fall game. Overall guys who were supposed to step up did on all teams. Good luck to Amat going forward.

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

O-cat saw Zamora first hand today. He is the real deal. Great arm. He can definitely throw the deep.

          • Valley Athletics

Couldn’t stay to watch most of semis . Sat in the bleachers and watched both amat and monrovias game going on at same time . It was tough keeping An eye on one game . Monrovia was smoking Glendora and Amat vs cathedrAl was close . Every team in the quarters where legit And could beat each other in these types of tournaments in my opinion .

          • Observantcat

What was the outcome of Pomona? Didn’t hear from any of their fans as of yet. Were they as impressive today as they were yesterday?

          • Observantcat

Who now would you say is your front runner at the QB spot?

          • Pack5

For his 6th day on the he job the new guy did a heck of a job. Garcia had a great day also. Once Nava learns the offense its going to be a good battle for the qb spot.

          • Observantcat

How would you use Ruiz if he doesn’t make that cut?

          • 4peat

so many people coming the backfield, who the heck is Monrovia Rb..Moving Forward Anyway?

          • Mean Joe Green

4peat, I believe that it is Cameron Johnson. With the productive year that he had last year including his numbers, I think it would be a no brainer. Since it’s passing league I think they are trying to get him as many reps as possible as safety and save him for RB when the pads come on.

          • Valley Athletics

Garcia . Even though Nava is good , Garcia was better today . Add his ability to run it’s going to be hard to beat him out . I wouldn’t want to be the coach making that decision . Both are legit

          • Mean Joe Green

I have nothing but love for my friends over there at Amat. You guys did a great job! Sidney and Arcanado were lights out today and the D was lockdown. Had a chance to see the Cathedral and CO games. Don’t know which quarterback was which, but I was really impressed with the shorter kid. Good luck in the season, you guys should go far.

          • Valley Athletics

I saw like 10 minutes of charter oak vs etiwanda . The brother of last years Qb was playing . He is the shorter one . They scored quick twice and I moved over to stadium where amat and Monrovia had there games . They where good . I saw etiwanda destroy walnut first game of the day . If you where going by the eye test they had some of the most athletic looking players out there today .seeing charter oak today and going by how they where last couple years , they are my favorites to win title . Monrovia , Glendora , Los altos contenders .

          • patriot_dmo

Shorter CO QB is soph Clemetson. Kamden Brown is the junior, and brother of last seasons QB, Korry.

          • Valley Athletics

Who is the one who was throwing in the beginning of etiwanda ? I saw a taller muscular kid throwing during warm ups so I assumed he was a Qb .

          • patriot_dmo

I wasn’t there for that one.

          • Fourpkids06

            Clemetson

          • Valley Athletics

I misunderstood you at first glance and thought you where talking about CO Qb . Jajaja . Amats shorter Qb is Damian Garcia .

          • Mean Joe Green

Okay. I thought so, but was not for sure. It’s no knock against the taller kid, but Garcia looked more relaxed and accurate. Maybe its because of a two year familiarity with the program and the offense.

          • sir lancelot

            No need to go there??
Look I give every player credit for going out there and playing their heart out. Now the only reason us Amat fans come her and tak $hit is because we never had a problem until kids started transferring to Monrovia and this whole thing started spiraling out of control when they stated to compare the two school. As Amat fans we will defend our own. Big ups to mo town for giving it their all and fighting to the end. Hope all the kids in our area do well. Good luck mo town in your season, for what I saw yesterday you guys should be just fine.

          • Observantcat

Show me the route these kids take to school everyday and I will be your fan forever. Seriously didn’t know that BA was a city all to itself.

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

You all need to let it go. It was fun trash talking, but both teams will now go there separate ways and we will see what happens this year.

          • sir lancelot

Wow! You seam bitter. Stop all this comparing between schools. Totally different divisions, I know you guys will do well. So like Johnny said, let it go!

          • Observantcat

Never bitter, I really am sitting back and laughing at you because you really don’t make sense. Your comment was and please read it carefully (“Now the only reason us Amat fans come her and tak $hit is because we never had a problem until kids started transferring to Monrovia and this whole thing started spiraling out of control when they stated to compare the two school”) now do you understand what you just said. Your Amat fans are probably scratching their heads figuring out how to defend some of your statements and to their credit I will say nice try. After today I will not reply to this kind of ignorance and stick squarely on the game of football not area codes. Sure BA has a reputation from the past of being one of the great programs in all of California but trust me that is not the pull for their recruitment for players in the area. Some players are actually devout Catholics and choose to be in a Catholic environment and just happen to play sports. Never ever do Monrovia fans make snyed derogatory comments about players from other teams or bash Div. Until you have a good reason to do so then I would suggest you stop. Prove what sportsmanship is by winning your Div. so that others will join you in the celebration. Lastly, as for being a parent I would think that any parent would want the best production to of their kid no matter where they participate. You may want to save the better competition thing when you have a roster full of D1 prospects otherwise that argument is worthless.
            Ps.. I’m not your fan

          • sir lancelot

That’s why parents pay to go to Amat, to play agains the best weather they come from chino, Covina, San Dimas, east LA, even Monrovia. You can not blame them for wanted what’s best for their kids. On Rog the best coaching staff in the sgv

          • AMAT 73

Come on Ocat , we are not a city but we are LANCERLAND , somewhat of a land withing a city !! hahahahahaha .
Lighten up lancelot , it’s only passing league and nothing to pop your chest out at the winning of the tourney . Long ways to go before we are league ready but things seem to be looking good so let’s not get ahead of ourselves . The running game is what will take us to the top and we have yet to really see what that part of our game will be like . Congratulations to the LANCERS and all other teams for their efforts .

          • Valley Athletics

Agree , there are times to defend and times to just set back and enjoy Amat football .

          • OuttaYourMindTrib

“Any team that made it to semis is the real deal .” Not really. A couple years back Ayala won the Consolation bracket, they never made the playoffs. A well timed loss to Valencia then they ran the table. Didn’t mean anything when the pads came on.

          • Valley Athletics

Actually to get in the consolation bracket you have to lose your first game after pool play , then win evey game after that . After pool play you are guaranteed 2 games . So if you win 1st game after pool play you go to winners bracket and every game becomes an elimination game .to get to the semis in the winners bracket you have to win 3 games after pool play . Pool play is just for seedlings .

          • Sandman71

great achievement but they still cant get to the playoffs

    • OuttaYourMindTrib

“The Real Deal”. I saw the Monrovia Ayala game which the mild cats won BTW. There was no “Real Deal” on the field. What I saw was an average QB.

      Real Deal… ROFLMAO!!!

      • Mean Joe Green

It is interesting how the a team can get to the semi finals of a PASSING TOURNAMENT (please note all caps) and someone accuse the QB of not being able to pass. Sounds like someone is drinking too much Hatorade. Prior to the tourney, Aram said that the Glendora QB was the best in the valley (and he very well might be) but our defense dismantled his passing game and our offense rolled over them by at least 40 points. BTW if you saw the Ayala game and thought that the QB was mediocre then you must be an Ayala parent.

        • OuttaYourMindTrib

Not a parent, I used to live in Chino Hills, moved to Arizona earlier this year. I come back from time to time to take care of my properties, visit friends and family, occasionally watch my Bulldogs play, etc…
I happened to be visiting friends in La Verne so I made it a point to come watch a couple games. Ayala happens to be replacing a 3 year starter at the QB position so I was curious how the kid would do. Considering he’s never taken a Varsity snap that I can recall I was at least mildly intrigued.
I did NOT (please note all caps) say “mediocre”, I said “average”. I did however say he was NOT “The Real Deal”. No haterade at all. It’s more a reality check. He won’t be playing on Saturdays on TV at the QB position anyway. “The Real Deals” play on Saturdays at the D1 level. Again no haterade, people just should not be throwing around “The Real Deal”.

  • joe

Did Nava the new transfer QB get any reps for Amat?

    • Pack5

Yeah he got reps. He throws a mean ball but looks like he needs to still learn the offense.

  • Aaron

Left before the results of Chino Hills/Amat. Couple of things: Chino Hills came to play, they stretched out, warmed up, did drills well before the vaunted Amat took the field. It was a business trip…and Pomona didn’t really warm up and they took it to them.

I think that if Pomona were in a higher division they are very Muir-Esque. Plenty of skill but thin with the bubbas. Unless they have a lot of linemen?

    • Valley Athletics

Heard Pomona also beat chino hills .

      • Sports News

Yeah great game Pomona looks GOOD my real GOOD apologies for dissing them before! I’m trying to figure where did they’re only loss from?

      • Mean Joe Green

Do you know who they lost to?

        • Valley Athletics

aram just posted that they lost to silverado .

  • Valley Athletics

Valencia went 5-0 in pool play .

  • Valley Athletics

Cathedral and etiwanda also went 5-0 .

  • Sports News

Hey Aram when did Pomona lose they killed all of there top competitors when I was there?

    • Not Since 1995

Yeah they killed AMAT on a 2point pick. Hate to hear your interpretation of a blow out.

      • Sports News

Relax man you guys got talent…just not better than POMONA ahahahahahha good luck in the PAC-5 you will definitely need it man ahahahhhaha

        • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

If you actually read the comment he was just pointing out the obvious here. I did not sense any frustration there.

          • Sports News

Let me point out the obvious for you two Pomona actually did switch guys in and out also you also have to understand if Amat were to use their “STUDS” both ways the whole game Pomona still would have came out with the W because that’s just what Pomona do Amat is not use to that trust me!

          • Pack5

            Keep telling yourself that.

      • Pack5

Pomona had their starting group in that game the entire time. Most of those kids went both ways. Amat constantly rotates kids on both sides of the ball. Trust if Amat used starters on both sides of the ball the entire time the results would have been different.

        • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

That’s because the coaches at AMAT use this as a forum to see what kind of tweaks (changes) had to spell that out for P-town and Mo-town, they were getting excited. Need to be made before we go into the season. Yes it would have been different.

          • Mean Joe Green

So your coaches put your kids in positions to not compete? Look, no one is taking this seriously, but if your telling me that winning means nothing to your coaches then why show up. Simply stay at home and invite some of these schools to 7v7 games. If you guys win it all, then is it safe to say that I will hear no responses from Amat fans because this Tourney means nothing?

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

No. They use this as a forum to go up against good competition to see where adjustments need to be made. It’s guys like you that think it is life or death. Your not still upset cause that’s not how it was when you were at amat with your lil Johnny. Obviously that’s why you bounced.

          • Aaron

Was that you screaming in the stands yesterday afternoon? I know you guys run a power run/ pro set, so the results from passing league aren’t big. But you guys should compete well, specifically because as the Big Fish you should be drawing in talent. Looked small and outmatched.

          • Mean Joe Green

If you read any of my comments before responding you would see that I am one of few guys who have stated that this 7v7 means nothing. Also, for your information, no self respecting sports fan stays to watch a team that just beat them. Lastly, since you seem to know who I am, then have the balls next time to come up and say hello like a man rather than race home to your Commodore Vic 20 and post trash.

            mjg,
Don’t think you have seen any real longtime AMAT bloggers wave flags and shoot off fireworks because of a passing league contest win . What’s funny is up until these past 2 years we have been terrible at these tournaments . They are what they are , a format to see where the QBs are at on timing , reading defenses and other various issues and same for WR and the rest . NO LINEMEN = NO REAL FOOTBALL .But to some it is equal to winning the Superbowl , depending on who they beat that is !!!!!!!!!

          • Mean Joe Green

I know this might sound funny to a lot of people, but I promise that if Monrovia had won, I would not have said one disparaging word about BA. Passing league is about as close to football as H.O.R.S.E. is to basketball. Its fun to jaw-jack and talk trash, but I think it goes a little too far with some folks. I try not to throw stones in my Green and White glass house.

In the end if it were a real game Bishop Amat would destroy Pomona, Monrovia and basically every other area team. They are at another level and have proven it in recent years. These 7on7 tournaments mean nothing but good preparation for the season and to get a look at players at certain positions.

    • mr power

Agreed on the Bishop would kill Pomona in a real game. Every year with this passing league crap. Every year the teams that can run the football and play defense win. Pomona won’t be a factor this year because they don’t know how to block and are clueless when it comes to stopping the wing-t. They will drop 60 on bad teams and 10 against good ones.

A couple kids were jawing which often goes on. Bonita’s got some physical players and Ayala does as well. • Nomoredrama

Monrovia is in the San Gabriel Valley boundaries, but Pomona, Pasadena (Muir) and Chino Hills are not. I don’t know what city St. Francis is in, so can’t speak on that one.

  • OnBLUE

The year Bishop Amat beat Orange Lutheran, Chaminade, Crespi and only lost to eventual PAC-5 champs LB Poly by 4 points was the same year
that Monrovia lost to Arcadia and Rosemead.

The year Bishop Amat beat St. Bonaventure, Alemany, Notre
Dame, and Mater Dei was the same year Monrovia lost to San Dimas.

The year Bishop Amat beat Crespi, Loyola, and Notre Dame was
the same year Monrovia lost to Glendora and San Dimas.

The year Bishop Amat beat La Mirada and Crespi was the same
year Monrovia lost to Arcadia, San Dimas, and South Hills.

The year Bishop Amat beat Servite, La Mirada, Charter Oak,
Crespi, and Loyola was the same year Monrovia lost to Ayala and South Hills.

The year Bishop Amat beat Santa Margarita, Charter Oak,
Chino Hills, and Loyola was the same year Monrovia lost to St. Francis and
    Paraclete.

There is no question that Bishop Amat plays on an entirely
different field and level when compared to Monrovia. Every year, certain
Monrovia fans start chest thumping and start making subtle comparisons but
there really is NO comparison. And I know that this list might appear unfair because it is comparing Bishop Amat’s wins vs. Monrovia losses but seriously….None of Monrovia’s wins can compare to BA’s wins. BA’s wins and losses came against the top programs not only in California but in the entire country.
Monrovia fans should be thankful for their success at their level of
high school football (whatever division they are in). But Bishop Amat is a
different beast who plays and has been playing at the highest level of California
high school football since the school was founded. That’s decades upon decades of playing Servites, Long Beach Polys, Loyolas, Mission Viejos, etc.

Monrovia has had more than enough trouble trying to compete with schools
like Ayala, South Hills, and Arcadia…let alone a school like Loyola (Who has
struggled in the Serra but would crush any school from the SGV). And no…there’s no comparison between Loyola and Ayala, South Hills, or Arcadia LOL.
Stop comparing Monrovia and Bishop Amat…it’s just silly.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

I think it’s safe to say that Bishop Plays on a higher level than Monrovia….as they should. However, Monrovia should get a little more love now that we are in the Div 5. Bishop is a private catholic school which recruits the best players from the entire SGV. Which means they have players who would otherwise be at Monrovia, South Hills ETC… which is fine. However, BA is only a shadow of itself, comparing to what it used to be. I am not saying it is easy or possible to win the Pac 5 every year. But BA is in a division they will never and mean never win. Now they are in a league the possibly may never win again. You really can’t talk down on Mtown’s efforts because a public school of 1700 kids has dominated it’s level so much that they are now in a division playing with schools much larger. So when you compare success of each program, it is clear that Monrovia has been more successful than BA over the last 5 years. I know you are going to say well if BA was in Div 11 They would win…You are right. They should. Monrovia is not a pac 5 team…and neither is BA. Don’t get mad and try to talk down on what others are doing, because BA well, no one is impressed. If you get to the 2nd round…then holla back at the SGV, if not…then you have accomplished what 100% of the SGV teams can do in the pac 5 playoffs, and that’s lose royally.

    • Observantcat

I wholeheartedly agree with you on your comparison, but that has never been the problem with BA, the problem is you don’t get enough of the type of players that can take you to that promised land. Amat used to be a force in the area and I know lots of players from Pomona, Duarte, Monrovia that played on those teams, Now your’e down to maybe 7-10 great players that have the athletic ability to get past a round in the PAC5 and theres nothing wrong with that. Playing up can pay big dividends if all of your players have the ability to improve over the years but that doesn’t ever seem to be the case. This year will be a great test for Amat because they have had some very solid freshman and JV teams and should challenge most teams this season, The problem will be how fast can they adjust to the other squads that have 11-12 super Sophs that have the same goal in mind. Looking at some of the footage from the Air Assault imagine if you guys could take 3-4 of our best and 3-4 of Pomona’s best then you would be in the discussion of world beaters. Every season great teams have a brain fart game and anyone can get disappointed. Long Beach Poly played their worst game against Amat or better yet Amat may have played their best game against Poly same season Amat had a brain fart game against Garfield. I’m hoping that we call all get it together this season and compete on whatever level we were chosen to play on. The Key is to WIN!!!

      • Valley Athletics

Getting guys from Pomona and Monrovia would be just overloading in positions they have . on paper Getting David Jimenez from Los altos on D line , OL Alex Villanueva from Duarte at 6’4 290 , Ben Northrop OL 6’6 330 from Glendora . That would be a killer roster with what Amat has already . I think all the extra work being done by players on there own will pay off this year . About 7 kids doing 7on7 on TNT , ground zero and BBT and some of the trench hog guys doing weekend workouts offseason . Team unity goes along way also .

        • Observantcat

I agree, I think having that kind of offensive and defensive line would really put teams like Monrovia, Pomona and other schools with great skill sets way above the bar. Monrovia’s line hasn’t really been that far off in the past 5 years, we just need the depth in that area. I think Amat need more depth in the skill positions on both Offense and DB’s the cohesiveness is there from a team standpoint but when you get deeper in your division the rosters are fully loaded. This years preseason schedule should give you guys a heads up against the kind of teams you may meet later in the season.

          • AMAT 73

The problem with depth at AMAT is that not many who are not starters want to stick around for their turn under the lights . With the coaching and other fundamentals they receive in their first 2 years in the program they many times are further along then players from other programs . We are not talking about the blue chippers but the kids who turn themselves into that level by hard work and sometimes outside help . You can see by the ones who leave they usually start for the programs they go to which might not be the case if they stay at AMAT and you can’t blame them for that . In todays high school sports world, transferring to get what you want seems to be the way it is . That contibutes to that lack of depth you speak of on our team . Talent level is defintely there and yes we do lack some depth but I don’t think the picture is as bleak as you paint it because there are solid young players coming up who just need seasoning which they should get during preseason play . As you know this season is a huge measuring stick for the program and the direction it is heading in for the future .

          • Valley Athletics

They have depth . This weekend they where using different combinations of players every series and where able to win . So many kids where making plays .there was some series even with game close against cathedral that Vaughn’s and sidney where not even in . Some series would be just vauhns , some with sidney , some with both ..

          • AMAT 73

            VA ,
I respect your views and opinions but you know as well as I do these passing leagues are not PAC-5 game time situations . Glad to hear we do have some depth and that they are getting the work in but do you think Vaughns or Sidney will be anywhere near the bench come game time during the season ? Maybe to catch a breather but on the whole , they will be in there 98% of the time .

          • Valley Athletics

I think on offense they can rest them a series or two , to have them ready for defense . Defense is where I think it will be most important to have them .

        • GP AKA Green Machine

Valley it all boils down to preparation. No one in the valley prepares like BA in the off season, and during the year. That preparation is non stop throughout the whole program. For all 4 years. That’s the Same with Mater Dei, Poly ETC… SJB. That’s the difference. The continuous preparation gives a clear cut edge. With that being said…BA still does not have the depth or the level of talent the other pac 5 schools have.Their stars do go both ways, and do so because they must. By play off time they are wore out. If the had any of the stars from Monrovia and Pomona or wherever, in addition to what they have, that can only help. Like if they had D1 bound Deshawn Potts…they guy would have been a overload last year? They would love to have the lineman, but come on now. Their depth at all positions is what’s keep them from going beyond the 2nd round in the Pac 5

    • Mean Joe Green

I am soooo tired of so-called BA fans coming on this blog and accusing M-Town fans of thinking we could beat them. Please show me ONE and I mean ONE comment made from any M-Town fan stating that we could beat BA. Are you making up rivalries so that you can get yourself hyped up for the season? If you are, please do not do it at Monrovia’s expense. No one with half a brain believes that Monrovia would win at the Pac-5 level. Just because we “big up” our team does not mean that we are insulting yours. Is your team the only team in the SGV that fans can be proud of? Please kill all of the comparisons, because you look silly. You are the only one making those comparisons. You must feel shaky about your team if you feel obligated to defend your D1 team against the fans of a D5 team. If Salesian fans came on here and talked about how great their team is, I would not feel compelled to compare my team to theirs because they are in a lower division. Why should you? You have bigger things to worry about than what M-Town fans think of your squad. You’re like Muhammad Ali comparing your victories to Sugar Ray Leonard. It sounds really pathetic. Your weight class is larger than ours. We get it. But they have heavyweight belts and middleweight belts. Rather than criticizing the belts we have won, focus on your next match. I am worried about San Dimas, St. Francis, CO, Glendora and Diamond Bar. They may not be worthy opponents for you, but they are in our weight class. If you are too busy looking at what is going on in our boxing ring you might catch an uppercut in your own and get knocked the f**K out in the first round.

      • OnBLUE

You’re right…no one has compared the schools on this particular entry. BUT everyone on here has seen you and Observantcat making comparisons between Bishop Amat and Monrovia many times in the past. And for every person that writes on this blog making comparisons, there are hundreds that read. I write not for you or Observantcat..but to the others that might read that Monrovia football is similar to Bishop Amat football…which you and I know is completely ridiculous. What I wrote is not a matter of opinion but of fact. I’m just keeping it real for the people that are not “in the know.” So again let me sum it up for you and everyone else that reads this blog…. Bishop Amat Football > Monrovia Football and I have the scores and history to prove it.

        • Mean Joe Green

I have never compared the two football programs and I invite anyone on this blog to find a single statement otherwise. I have defended Monrovia against bogus and uneducated statements about the academics of the two schools. I also believe that if a BA fan has the gumption to criticize our school, athletes and football, they should be ready to defend their own. I am too young to know about when BA was crowned the King of the SGV. So forgive me if I do not give Bishop Amat the proper respect that so many of your fans think you deserve. Also, I never liked history in school. However, I know what I have seen the last five years and I believe that if you reside in a glass house……well…..you know the rest. Again, this is not a comparison. Just a observation that I do not see too many voices of reason coming from the Blue and Gold camp. OCat is also one of Monrovia’s biggest critics. Who amongst the BA family is not drinking the grape Kool-Aid and has a realistic view of the past three years? If there is one amongst you, I bet he is not worried about Monrovia, its athletes or its football.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Passing League tournaments generally mean nothing. But it is a good barometer to gauge how well a unit grasp their offensive and defensive sets. Even more it’s a great measurement stick to evaluate how much more work needs to be done.

I’m not surprised Bishop Amat did as well as they did. They’re timing got better the second day and their WRs got better spacing. Their defense got better as well. The first day, in a few games, they got caught out of position, etc. but the second day they looked a lot tighter in their coverage.

Pomona was impressive. Their team speed, in my opinion, looks outstanding.

Charter Oak looked like I figured they would. Reloaded.
Monrovia looked interesting. I don’t see them losing too much with a new head coach, but they should still be fun to watch.
Chino Hills QB play will be something to keep an eye on. So will their DBs.
Etiwanda. Impressive. I’m curious to see if they can keep that turn going into the fall.

Too bad Upland wasn’t there this past weekend.

The Mtown coach brings private program discipline. Mtown has never been in the semi’s at the Bonita tourney. They did this with a bran new qb.
