  • GP AKA Green Machine

    Well,

Monrovia is expected to win this tourney. After making the semis at the Bonita Air Assault, anything less would be a huge let down. I expect the Semis to Be

    Monrovia vs DBar

    Crescenta Valley Vs Northview

    Championship Game
    Monrovia vs Crecenta Valley

    SGV Shootout Champ: Monrovia

With This being said. Monrovia has never won this tourney, so that would be the only reason to enter. Outside of Team building, this passing league tourney may not be the competition level Monrovia should be looking at, going into a higher division. However, the Cat’s probably should have been looking for something more competitive. Hopefully after this weekend, there is one more tourney, where the cat’s can feel some pressure in the first game, and maybe loose really early.

    • AMAT 73

      GP,
Maybe they see this as a tune up for league play and not the playoffs

      • GP AKA Green Machine

San Marino is better than everyone on here besides Buena Park, Dbar and CV. This is similar to Bishop Playing in the Bonita Air Assault. Now If BA was in a big tourney with MD, Alemany, Mission V, SJB etc…that would be a tune up. lol. How are you man?

        • Valley Athletics

Amat and Glendora are at the Edison tournament . All the top teams are in that one . Last year Amat lost to St. John bosco in that tournament .

          • AramT

Are we sure Arroyo should be discounted? They played some competitive games in losses at Bonita and they won this thing last year.

But I would say it’s between CV and Monrovia. Buena Park may also have a say.

Teams I really interested in seeing are Maranatha (Bogan effect), D-Bar (will Noodles play?) and Los Altos (Want to see how Silva and Avery are progressing).

          • Football04

            Do not sleep on covina

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Arroyo will be excited, and they do have home field with their questionable refs. I don’t see why noodles wouldn’t play, he has got be ready. I think he will have to take some risk, and just hopes he stays healthy. Dbar has one of the better qb’s in the field, so we will see. I am not sure if Bogan has the horses. I am interested to see how Los Altos looks. However, they are a very physical team and this may not be their thing. Buena always has athletes…

          • Football04

Covina is very underrated though after saturday you will second guess on putting these other schools ahead of them

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Covina is not going to be in the semis or better.

          • Football04

They will make it before northview does simply because they have a better recieving core and after saturday youll think different

          • GP AKA Green Machine

That’s a good tourney to be in. Amat and glendora should come away better teams after that workout.

    • FYI

It’s PASSING LEAGUE, you clown. Anyone can beat anyone in PASSING LEAGUE. Average teams beat good teams all the time in PASSING LEAGUE. Amat lost to Pomona for gods sake. If that was a real game in September, Amat’s JV team would have mopped the field with Pomona by 3 TD’s. IT’S PASSING LEAGUE

      • GP AKA Green Machine

        who said t wasn’t ?

    • Football04

Covina will easily make it to semis before northiew they have no recieving core

      • GP AKA Green Machine

North look decent at the Bonita. This is based upon the field at hand.

  • Nomoredrama

Has DRanch fallen completely off the map? Anyone have any updates on what’s going on over there?

    • GP AKA Green Machine

      I don’t see a coach on Maxpreps.

    • Valley Athletics

Heard that Roddy is the new AD .. Don’t know if it’s true.

  • Mean Joe Green

Last year, Arroyo had the benefit of putting Monrovia in the same pool as DBar. Monrovia got smacked by a more physical and equally fast team. Although I believe Monrovia is the clear favorite this year, they should not go into this tourney too cocky. When Monrovia destroys low-tier to mediocre pools with their speed and air assualt, they tend to fall in love with the deep ball. At the Bonita tourney, they walked into better competition thinking they can simply outrun and out-jump their defenders. This allowed linebackers to drop back into cover three and provide added support to the slower and shorter DBs. The long ball tactic didn’t work last year against DBar and it won’t work this year. If MTown balances the long ball with the underneath stuff, they should be alright.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

well said. Passing league is won with the short 5-10 yard completions.

    • Valley Athletics

My neighbor from walnut high said they did a 3 way with Diamond Bar and Nogales . He said Diamond Bar did not score on them and Walnut scored twice . Noodles wasn’t there but how much of a difference will that make .

      • Mean Joe Green

Yikes! Has their program gone through that much transition over the last year? I don’t think one player can make that much of a difference in 7v7, but then again I have never seen the kid play. Let me rephrase that, “I hope that one kid can’t make that much of a difference”.

        • Valley Athletics

Bryan lamb , Cameron Hayes , Cordell broadus and kanya Bell . All D1 prospects at WR /DBs . Running back Tyler Brown was also a big part of passing game ..

          • GP AKA Green Machine

If Dbar had those players they would be in the hunt for a title this year.

          • PatrickHT

One them is currently possibly on his way back, pending outcome of particular circumstances

          • Low and behold

Everyone knows that Lamb is the one trying to get back into Diamond Bar. There was a reason that Cam Hayes was never a starter at DBar, even after Bell got hurt Hayes still couldn’t crack the starting lineup. Broadus will be missed and Bell is still up in the air. Should Bell come back and his knee is sound he will be the top rated recruit in the SGV.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

No he won’t ….SC has already offered Trey Sidney from Amat, and Mason From Muir. Holmes from Muir Already has a offer from UCLA and so does the kid from St Francis. Bell is nice, but he is not the outright top recruit in the SGV. Especially coming off a Knee injury.

          • TruTH

Actually if Bell does return he would be the top recruit in the SGV. He is a four star player with more than 10+ offers, including SC and UCLA.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I stand corrected He is a four and mason and holmes are 3 stars. However, Based upon coming back from the injury, I don’t think he will be the best in the area.

          • PatrickHT

Hey, but if he is sound enough to help his team assuming he plays, that surely has to account for something to scouts

          • PatrickHT

            You HAVE GOOD Detective skills..lol

          • PatrickHT

Supposedly Bell was just added to the DB maxpreps roster this past week, so we’ll all know for sure soon enough I guess

      • PatrickHT

        That was NOT true!

        • GP AKA Green Machine

          Who won?

          • PatrickHT

            Db

          • GP AKA Green Machine

With Noodles they should have a shot a doing well in this tourney. DB’s QB is legit so he should be able to find a few guys. I know nothing about Walnut. However, I just don’t think Walnut beat DB. Maybe valley saw the 1 TD Walnut scored and nothing else. But hey, if he is telling the truth ..eww

          • Valley Athletics

Didn’t even see game . I talked to people . It was even posted by someone else . And nobody won ,it was a 3 way practice .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Well a 3 way practice. That’s not the same as a full 7 on 7 game.

          • GetOgreIt

            7 on 7 is practice…..it’s not a game

          • AramT

Noodles has been practicing with D-Bar and will play this weekend in the SGV Shootout.

          • PatrickHT

DB lost to Monrovia by 3 at the passing tournament! Unfortunately they met them in the qtrs.

        • Valley Athletics

Heard it from more than one person . At the Bonita tournament they where playing while Amat had next game in next field . I was there for Amat game and asked a parent who was there . He said same exact thing . On here others said same . That’s to many people saying same thing .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

well we will see on Saturday….

          • PatrickHT

DB had 3 td,2 int. Walnut had 1 td

          • PatrickHT

That was the office score! Not sure who was drinking the Kool aid

          • PatrickHT

But your nephew plays for walnut????

          • Valley Athletics

My nephew played only 2 years and quit playing .

      • LA Man

Hey VA your pretty funny. You posted last year that you lived in Orange County and only followed the happenings in this area because your nephew attended Southpoint Middle School with Broadus and Bell and is now at Walnut. Yet your all over every story about Amat and Diamond Bar. Hmmmm, something sounds very fishy with you.

        • PatrickHT

Wait, so he was watching Amat, while his nephew was playing with walnut???? Wth???

          • Valley Athletics

walnut was playing against etiwanda . amat was not playing , they had the next game in the adjacent field against Kaiser . So I was talking to some friends . I asked them about the Monrovia game and DB game . Just stating what friend said . My neighbors kid Also had said same thing . I didn’t believe so I asked an Adult .

          • AMAT 73

            PatrickHT ,
Not really an issue as we was still watching Family by taking in the AMAT game .

        • Valley Athletics

Just moved back to Walnut … I know so many people , have many nephews and relatives kids . Some play still, some have graduated . But I still go to some games and keep in touch with fellow graduates .

      • PatrickHT

Again, your neighbor?? In walnut and the troll that lies on every blog, and some of us know who he is!

    • 4peat

      well put!!! i agree

    • GetOgreIt

So they should throw passes that they’d never throw in a real game

      • Mean Joe Green

There is no such thing as a pass that you will never throw in a real game. Its about throwing passes that will win whatever situation that you are in. If underneath passes win the competition, then that is what you throw. There are some competitions/games where the deep ball will win. Either way, if you are unable to balance your attack, more times than not you will lose. I don’t care if this is just a passing league, you don’t enter any competition without the intent to win. If Monrovia is in this just for practice, $h*ts and giggles, then they should stay home.

        • GetOgreIt

Yes there is……like the one over the middle 4 feet off the ground

        • GetOgreIt

          It’s a glorified practice, not a real competition……

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Getoutofhere…there is heavy competition in practice. How do you think starters are chosen….I guess you were the coaches son on a 0-10. He let you play QB regardless of who beat you out in practice.

          • GetOgreIt

Who said there wasn’t heavy competition in practice?
You either have bad comprehension or like putting words in people’s mouths.
            You know nothing about me.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Glorified Practice is a derogatory comment on practice. Every practice should be glorified.

          • GetOgreIt

            Semantics

    • GP AKA Green Machine

This is a big boy tourney good Luck to the SGV teams!

      • Nomoredrama

        Ditto!

      • New York

To be honest, the real big boys will be in the weight rooms at those respective schools. This is the type of tournament where a smaller school can win but would get worked in the trenches in a real game.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

New York, you being a trench hog, I can see your point. However, let the little guys run around. However, MD, SJB, SM Serra and JSerra are all in contention for a Pac 5 title.

        • GetOgreIt

Hopefully not doing silly linemen “competitions”

      • Not So Fast My Friend

that’s the tournament to be at.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

Yeah…That’s a highly competitive tourney. However, if you are not on that level, you won’t get much work in. You will be picking up the tents, recycling water bottles and going home early.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

For the most part, I agree. However, you want to go against the best talent when you can. Fortunately, it’s passing league so there’s no real loss in picking up empty water bottles and packing tents. lol.

The experience alone is worth the trip and it certainly gives the players an opportunity to gauge their level of commitment, attention to detail and a level to strive for, competition wise. I’d welcome the challenge, but I’m competitive even playing horseshoes. lol

          • GetOgreIt

The experience of passing league sucks…..nobody plays honest ball, it’s 90 degrees, nowhere to park and it wastes a whole day or weekend……

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Nobody plays honest ball? You lost me there.

          • GetOgreIt

5 under man 2 deep bump and run against spread offenses that rely on the option running game……

You think it’s honest to put 5 in the box vs. Bosco? Corona Centennial? Good luck…..

We’ve already established that passing league is a glorified practice, so why practice doing stuff you’ll never, ever do?

          • Mean Joe Green

I have no idea what that means. First of all, this is not passing league. This is a passing tournament (two completely different things). Secondly, if 7v7 ball is useless, then you might want to share that with every collegiate and professional football team, because they all do it. No one is saying that winning these tournaments is the equivalent of winning CIF, but you can’t tell me that it doesn’t help QBs, WRs and DBs sharpen their skills.

          • GetOgreIt

Whatever you want to call it…..it’s been called passing league since the 70′s by some…..didn’t say it was useless, I said it was boring and silly at times

Winning these tournaments means nothing but winning these tournaments….I don’t care if anybody wins.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Winning a tourney means you competed that day and you were the best team. If we were playing marbles, i’d want to win. If we were playing Madden, I’d want to win. If we were seeing who could spit further, I would want to out spit you. Come on “getoutofhere”

          • GetOgreIt

Winning a tourney means you just wasted a whole weekend

          • GP AKA Green Machine

So sitting at home in the shade is better option? You can’t lift every day you know.

          • GetOgreIt

Sometimes it is…..why burn kids out?
Another better option is do three ways with honest teams, that way you don’t see ridiculous 7-on-7 tourney tailored defenses/offenses that you’ll never see in a real game….which is a waste of time and teaches bad habits.

          • Mean Joe Green

            Gotcha.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

it’s too hot! See what I mean…Your name should be getoutofhere.

          • GetOgreIt

You’re name should be “I get way too serious about trivial sh*t”

          • GP AKA Green Machine

so I guess 99% of Socal High school teams are too Serious about Trivial passing league tournaments.

          • GetOgreIt

99% of the teams in SoCal aren’t in tournaments

          • Mean Joe Green

            The ones that matter are.

          • GetOgreIt

            Not always

In fact, my local team is a perennial power, hasn’t done a tourney in years and got to the semis last year

          • GP AKA Green Machine

If you have an experienced group, I would say yes, but if breaking in a lot of first year starters, you want a lot of reps, and if you have a chance to get into a tourney where they could play 6 games instead of 3.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

More reps is always going to be a bonus with young players. I’d still opt for at least one tournament where they faced some serious competition. It will always be a good barometer of where you are versus where you want to be. GP you know as well as I the tougher the competition is the better it’s going to make you. :-)

          • GP AKA Green Machine

There is some truth to that, but confidence with new players is important too. There are some mid level tournaments to play in. This is a elite passing tourney. Really for the top 20-25 teams in Socal. If you are not an elite school, you are not going to get much work…it;s going to slaughter. 2-3 completions the whole day. Perfect Example is Glendora….They are nowhere near any of these teams. Right now the top 3 passing league schools in the SGV is …However, that has nothing to do with pads.

            1 BA
            2 CO
            3. Monrovia

          • GetOgreIt

Who cares….. It’s 7 on 7….. You’re getting way too wrapped up in it

          • GP AKA Green Machine

not really….it’s a chance to be competitive. You probably don’t have one competitive bone in your body.

          • GetOgreIt

You don’t know anything about me…..you’re way too into 7 on 7 bro…..it’s not football

          • Theblueandgold

You couldn’t be more correct. 7 on 7 is as close to football as slow pitch softball in a beer league is to MLB Baseball.

          • GetOgreIt

            Really

      • Theblueandgold

When the big boys show up in full gear and with all their linemen, then it’s a big boy tournament. Until then, it’s just a passing tournament that has zero bearing on how your real season is going to turn out.
