GANO HIRED: Results of HLPUSD meeting leads to four-time CIF champion coach being hired as teacher …

Wilson High has hired varsity football head coach Greg Gano as a teacher, thus clearing the way for the four-time CIF champion coach to remain the Wildcats’ coach.

Things were up in the air as far as a teaching job to go along with Gano’s coaching job, which quite possibly could have been a deal breaker that sent the veteran coach looking for other things had the school not provided a day job.

Gano was hired this past winter to revive Wilson’s dormant football program. Gano won four CIF championships across town at rival Los Altos.

  • The stands

I truly thought that Gano would make the most of his, probably, last coaching opportunity. I hope his name is cleared so that Wilson isn’t forced to hire just anyone given that the season is quickly approaching. Wilson Football has been struggling for years and is in need of a strong motivator. Wilson doesn’t get the players it once did so they must play up in order to be competitive.

  • Jefe

The most surprising part of this whole story is that people actually care about Wilson football.

    • rgd2626

what a class act you are.

      • Jefe

Sorry but it’s true. If it wasn’t Gano and some no-name, it would be a complete non-story.

        • rgd2626

first of all.aram would report this no matter what school or coach that he covers.true it stands out more because Gano is mentioned but would and still is a story.
second-this reason i responded, there are a lot of people who follow and support wilson football.just because there not a top notch program does not mean they should not be covered or written about.

  • Havoc

WOW! You are telling me that they can’t find a PE position in the district? PE positions are hard to come by. Maybe someone did not retire that they counted on. Nothing you can do. Got to have the PE job 1st. Should have never left Los Altos.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

The bigger question is why some type of drama seems to follow him.

  • SGV 4 30 Years

Maybe it’s a teaching credential issue. That’s about the only thing I can think of.

  • AramT

From what I’m hearing, this has more to do with a guaranteed teaching position to go along with the job. Coach Gano did a very stand-up thing a month ago that I will expose if this whole thing doesn’t break right.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

What’s going on sounds weird. Especially if it’s a teaching position.

    • mr power

Didn’t they give him the PE job Christos had?

  • SGV 4 30 Years

At this point in the game, the district has no real choice. If they need to find a new coach, what in the world are they going to do, and who are they going to get. The bigger picture to me would be what message would the board be sending to the Wilson football program other than “We don’t care about you.” If it doesn’t go right, Gano will be able to find another coaching gig, but Wilson won’t find another Gano.

  • Havoc

Well this basically sums up Wilson. Nobody and I mean nobody over there has any clue how to do things. Aram, I sure you would quietly agree with that. I mean the principal has no clue about athletics. The AD, Fessenden, has no clue. The Valley Vista league hates dealing with them. As soon as Merrill left, and this guy, AP Science teacher, was put in charge, everything got even worse than it already was. Lets see, Oviedo was a solid coach and he got pressured to step down but he was the last good thing they had. Then they hired a bunch of loose cannons and renegade types. Christos actually was doing a good job with what he had and the situation the Admin. gave him. Now they let him go to bring in GANO, who is a bunch of drama anyways, and look where they are. They can’t even get Gano a teaching spot.

    Where is Christos anyways????

    • hecticbuck

he is the OC at norco high school

  • hecticbuck

ive been a wilson football fan for over 13 years now and if they get rid of gano i will never attend another game at wilson. outside of the basketball program wilson sports are a joke. asian people could care less about football so this is what i say. shut down the football program once and for all. ever since the demograhics have changed at wilson football will never be restored at wilson. just a bunch of idiots running that school starting with the administration

    • The stands

I have to wonder if Wilson doesn’t care about football because it doesn’t need the money it generates. Perhaps the parents of the general population of students has the money to donate for whatever needs the school may have. Whatever the case, Wilson doesn’t seem focused on football. Wilson’s basketball coach, Willie Allen, gets the most out of his players. They won the Valle Vista league last year and made a decent play off run; so the school has ahtletes.

      • Wildcat

        What the hecticbuck is
alluding to is if Asians don’t play you aren’t going to get the school
administration support. Wilson excels at basketball, tennis, and badminton. An
excellent example of that is the swimming pool at Wilson. The school district
was going to rebuild the Wilson and Los Altos swimming pools. They decided to
build a new pool in a different location at Los Altos first. A few weeks after
they started building the Los Altos pool the county tagged the Wilson pool as unsafe
and shut it down. Wilson had to go for over a year with no pool at all. Guess
what happen to all the Wilson pool related sports, they went downhill. Guess where
all the Wilson pool talent went, Los Altos with the new pool and the old pool.
Los Altos had two functioning pools while Wilson had zero.

        • hecticbuck

i remember years ago when the demographics around wilson wAs caucasion and some hispanics and few african americans. god if only wilson could get the back again

    • TruTH

I agree Wilson’s demographics have caused it to focus less on football and more on other areas. The truth is that Wilson used to have a football program that may not have been top notch but competed and not to long ago would give their cross town rivals a challenge. A few years ago Wilson had a running back in Tim Gilmore that was top level talent. He was fast, he was strong and took that team to the playoffs. The significance was that a player with that skill today would without a doubt choose Los Altos over Wilson. I don’t blame the kids either who would want to play at a school that doesn’t give importance to the program. A school that is having trouble keeping a coach with about a month into the first game of the season. Its a shame because Wilson has a great history in football.

      • hecticbuck

chinese dont play football, they would rather play basketball and tennis and badminton. the chinese have ruined wilson football

        • MoreKetchup

I really hope you are joking. Looking at all four of your comments, you seem to be a blatant racists, or at least a person with some great prejudices. I hardly understand how someone like you could be real and think it is okay to post this cr@p on here.

          • doggie298

I agree with moreketchup…i’m asian and love football, played football, and attend a high school and college game each week during the season. There is a huge difference in saying all vs most.

          • hecticbuck

the facts are the facts, chinese students dont play football. cant you idiots get it through your small heads

          • MoreKetchup

Do you realize what you sound like Hectic. Here is something YOU posted:

“i remember years ago when the demographics around wilson wAs caucasion and some hispanics and few african americans. god if only wilson could get the back again”

            Can you spell ignorant?

          • hecticbuck

hey moreketchup why dont you change your name to soy sauce

          • MoreKetchup

            I dislike Chinese food though…

    • The stands

Now you can continue to attend Wilson football games. It seems like Wildcat and you have been around the program for a while. How does the team look this year? Has Gano attracted any talent yet?

  • Wildcat

Here is Aram’s big secret, Gano took the coaching job with a
grantee that they would get him a teaching job. We have two issues here, the
district (Roberts) and the Wilson AD (Fessenden) both don’t want Gano as the head
coach of Wilson football. Roberts, is Los Altos and doesn’t want Wilson to pull
talent that would normally go to Los Altos. Fessenden, insecure and is concern
about losing his AD job to Gano (which would happen). How ironic is it that
Gano is now on the other side of all those games within the Hacienda La Puente
School district. Just a few years ago he was a protected man within the
    district.

Now as far as Christos, Wilson blew it they waited until
after his probation period ended. Now Christos is a PE teacher at Wilson and an
assistant coach at another high school.

This isn’t the first time Fessenden has attempted to stop
Gano from getting the HC job at Wilson. When Miss Paul was the principal
Fessenden voted “No” on hiring Gano before Christos took over. The new
principal didn’t put it up to a vote, which is a good thing.

Now the reason why Gano took the job over at Wilson with no
teaching job was not all in good faith. Gano needs about 5 more years before he
can retire. We all know how hard it is in today’s economy to get a teaching job
and HC job. Don’t forget Gano lasted all of four games into the season at Tustin
before he got fired there. His reputation isn’t what it used to be. I know
Aram, he didn’t get fired, he quit (Right!). What I’m not sure about his does
his retirement require him to work at a HLP school. We do need to be clear
here, Gano is all about retirement not football. That was very clear when he
    took the Wilson job.

Obviously I know a lot more than I’m posting on this thread,
the majority of the comments that I have made are common knowledge within the
Wilson program. There are key facts that I have to leave out, and Aram will
never write about them either, not when it comes to Gano.

If Aram does show up to the school board meeting that will
put additional pressure on the school board to give Gano the teaching job. The
school board doesn’t do well under media pressure especially with their shady past.
Will be interesting to see Roberts and Gano square off on opposite sides.

    • Lupe

While Roberts may not want Gano, how is he Los Altos? He did coach @ Wilson long before his L.A. and Sac days ! I’m pretty sure he’s not keeping Gano away just because he will take sum talent across the Blvd. I’m not a Gano hater in anyway, I think it’s a good hire. Why Roberts doesn’t want Gano is on him. And of course Gano doesn’t have to be in the HLPUSD for his retirement, any public school w/ strs will do it.

    • AramT

I’m not sure I understand why Roberts wouldn’t want Gano. He is at the district, not at Los Altos. I have no clue about the Wilson AD or principal, but I can tell you this, for certain people at Wilson to be wondering and/or unsure about whether the VARSITY FOOTBALL HEAD COACH JOB came with a teaching job is TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. And THAT, I have on good record is part of what’s going on here. Right Wilson, because 99 pct of schools don’t have a day job ON CAMPUS for their VARSITY FOOTBALL HEAD COACH.

    • Kitten

That’s hilarious. Good for Christos. Glad to see he has a job. Where is he coaching?? La Puente??

      • hecticbuck

christos is coaching at norco high school. he is the offensive cordinator

        • mr power

What happened to Norco?? If Christos is calling offense I’ll bet anyone $100 bucks those guys don’t make the playoffs. Varsity??? Maybe its J.V.

          • Havoc

I would agree with that. I don’t see Chastain letting Christos call the dentist for him, not to mention plays. But lets look at it, Wilson ( the outhouse) to Norco (could be the penthouse). They always compete in that league with Centennial. We will see if they can still do it.

  • hecticbuck

what happen at the meeting tonight, is gano still coaching wilson

  • The stands

Okay, so now we know Gano is going to coach Wilson. Now we’ll see if he’s still the recruiter of the past and if he’s the motivator he once was. Good luck to Wilson football; maybe there’s another Tim Gilmore waiting in the wings.

  • Wildcat

On the Academic side of the house, the Principal at Los Altos, Cheli McReynolds made news when she accused Wilson of cheating on test scores. Wilson was awarded Best High Schools US News Silver award, ranked 125th in the State and 614th in the Nation, good numbers(Diamond Bar and Walnut were higher). Los Altos scores were so low that they didn’t even get ranked in the state or national rankings. Los Altos didn’t even achieve the California goals. Cheli’s response was that Wilson must have cheated. Those comments didn’t go well with the School District. The only school that exceeded the California goads in the district and they are accused of cheating.

    • The stands

That’s a very serious accusation. Does McReynolds have proof that Wilson cheated? If not, she’s playing with fire.

      • Wildcat

        She got burned ………
