QB Steven Nava leaves Bishop Amat …

Quarterback Steven Nava, who left Rosemead for Bishop Amat earlier this summer has checked out of Amat.

Nava was in a three-way battle to be the starting quarterback for the Lancers, a position he held last season at Rosemead as a sophomore. Nava had fallen behind juniors Damian Garcia and Ryder Ruiz in the competition.

No word on whether Nava will return to Rosemead, but it seems that would be his only choice this season due to CIF rules. Nava would still have eligibility at his last school of varsity competition.

“Do I want him back? Of course, I want him back,” Paramo said. “Is he welcome back? Yeah, he’s welcome back. Obviously, the seniors want him back. They kind of felt hurt that he left.”

“I don’t know what happened over there. I don’t know the story, if it’s football-related, personal or financial.”

Nava threw for 1,199 and 13 touchdowns in eight games last season. With him, Rosemead would go back to being the Mission Valley League favorite thanks to a bevy of returning starters highlighted by a defense that has all but two regulars back.

Aram’s Take: I can just see Nava’s phone blowing up right now with calls from Cathedral. Anyway, as I said all along, I have NO CLUE why Nava would ever leave Rosemead. With him, they’re the MVL favorite and he would have an excellent season playing with that team around him and lots of success in terms of Ws and Ls. Hopefully, he can just resume his career with the Panthers as if none of this ever happened. I REALLY like this Rosemead team with Nava at QB.

  • Unsure?

Actually, your getting into a bit of a grey area with CIF. I had a friend that transferred his kid twice under very similar circumstances. His 1st transfer was in the off season and he never played a sport at the 1st school to which he transferred, but because the transfer paper work was completed at the 1st transfer school he was denied eligibility at the 2nd transfer school. Taking a look at the CIF transfer portal I can see that this kids transfer paper work was already cleared on a “valid change of address”. This kids eligibility could get messy, especially since he was approved on a “change of address”.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

Yeah, He should go to Bassett or La Puente. Whichever district that “address falls under”. Going back to Rosemead we literally say that he never moved. Unless he has one parent living in La Puente and another in Rosmead…it looks like he lied to CIF about moving in the first place….

      • AramT

You don’t have to move to Amat’s “attendance area” to transfer there. A Rosemead kid could move to Hacienda Heights and play at Amat … just so long as he moves out of Rosemead’s attendance area.

Yes. I would imagine that the kid and his pops will have some explaining to do with CIF. But I also doubt that Amat challenges this, therefore making it moot.

        • valley baller

If the kid moved out of the Rosemead district and filed paperwork attesting to the fact, then how does he get back into Rosemead High School? Does the Rosemead district have open enrollment?

          • AramT

Because, I believe, he maintains his eligibility at the last place he played in a varsity event. Doesn’t matter if he moved out of that area.

          • valley baller

Actually this would be school district matter and not a CIF eligibility matter. In order to play for a certain school you must attend that school. If Rosemead doesn’t have open enrollment then how does the kid get back into Rosemead High School. Does his parents tell school district that they didn’t really move?

          • The truth and nothing but…

They would have to move back into district. It’s that simple!

          • valley baller

I have to laugh thinking back about all the banter back and forth about the 30 day sit out period when CIF first proposed the rule change, because most of the transfers are kids that simply use bogus address changes in order to transfer so that they don’t have to sit out any time.

          • The truth and nothing but…

Aram, first of all, it does matter. He would have to move back into the district. He can’t live in La Puente and attend RHS unless he file for some kind of special permit with Rosemead and La Puente releases him. Secondly, what do you mean you don’t know why he would leave Rosemead? How many college recruiters walk onto RHS? I do agree with him leaving because his growth at RHS is limited by the offense they run. However, I think Amat was a bad decision because the system just doesn’t fit his game. Look at the last two Amat QBs, Ruiz and Haynes, both are ultra athletic that can run like RBs which isn’t Nava’s game. I do think Cathedral is a better fit, the only problem is the season starts in two weeks.

          • Mean Joe Green

Aram you are absolutely correct. If an athlete does not participate in a single CIF sanctioned event, the athlete is still eligible to play at his home school; in this case Rosemead. An athlete can practice all summer with a new school and even participate in inter-school scrimmages and still return to his home school so long as he has not participated in a CIF sanctioned event, regardless if CIF processed the paperwork.

Nava and his parents could theoretically stay at their Rosemead residence until the first day of school at Bishop Amat. Which is why he has chosen today to make that announcement. If he starts school with Bishop Amat on Monday, then he would have to explain to Rosemead how he is still eligible to attend Rosemead USD. Timing is everything. If he would have started school, then they would be in the middle of a hornets nest. Since he didn’t, CIF nor the Rosemead district has a dog in this fight. Sounds completely legit to me.

          • The truth and nothing but…

This is only true if 1) He didn’t move when he transferred to BA which meant he would have to sit out 30 days or 2) He moved to another address but that address is also in the Rosemead USD.

          • Mean Joe Green

            That is my assumption.

          • Mean Joe Green

He and his parents will have no CIF issues returning to Rosemead. There is not a single circumstance that would prevent him from returning since he did not play a single Bishop Amat game or attend a single day of school. Some of you may think its a little shady, but it does not change the facts. His only worry will be if the coaches and teammates want him back and from the report it sounds like they do. All I can say is “Good luck young man”. We just got through defending a coach from Marshall from doing what is best for his family, but we criticize a kid for doing what is best for he and his family.

      • valley baller

CIF doesn’t allow you to use 2 different parent addresses when transferring. Which ever parent you were living with when you first enrolled into high school is the parent that your are attached to for transfer purposes. In order to obtain a transfer based on a change of address, everyone whom the kid was living with at the time that he originally enrolled into high school, as a Freshmen, would need to move to the new residence. The only thing that can trump that rule is a court order.

      • The truth and nothing but…

With all the transfers Monrovia has gotten over the years including Zamora and Bradley from Amat, you are accusing someone else of lying? I know for a fact Kurt Scoby lived across the street from Azusa High School when he went to Monrovia. As one of your own stated on another site, don’t throw stones when you are living in a glass house.

        • Mean Joe Green

Please only speak about the facts. Zamora sat out for the CIF allotted time. So no one is lying. Bradley grew up in Monrovia his whole life before he moved to Azusa. He moved back to Arcadia and has a district transfer from Arcadia. Please stop spreading lies that you know nothing about. Also, if you are interested in the truth as your name implies, then you can simply check the schools and the district to confirm. You can also pay the kids a visit at their homes if their parents will allow.

          • The truth and nothing but…

Bradley is a Monrovia native? Sounds to me you are the one that needs to get your facts straight. I’ll leave it at that. I am not going to stoop to Green Machine’s level and call out a player and his family for lying. I didn’t see you say anything about Kurt Scoby. Bottom line, you and I both know there are skeletons in Monrovia’s closet so no one from Monrovia should call out a player from another school for lying. That’s the definition of a hypocrite!

          • Mean Joe Green

Yes Bradley is a native. Born and raised. It’s a funny thing how you come on here with ‘Truth’ in your name to distract people from your thinly veiled lies. And by the way, I did not mention Scoby because if you knew anything about the kid then you would know that there are circumstances (no fault of his own) that could have placed him in a number of cities last year. While you want to disparage kids, I want to commend him for graduating under severe circumstances and getting a D1 scholarship.

          • Bogus

These Amat guys sound like scorned women. Why u care so much about kids who leave? I have no idea about kids who left our team. Let alone their names or the schools they went to. Sounds like they are praying for their failure so they don’t have to admit later that they might of made a mistake. Worry bout ur own kids.

          • The truth and nothing but…

Wrong about Bradley! Wrong about Scoby! Wrong about me! You clearly have no clue what’s going on with your own players. Take Bogus’ advise, worry bout ur own kids and really get to know them better.

          • Mean Joe Green

I got you dead to rights. Anyone who is not an Amat alum, parent or employee will admit that you all are in fact the blog bullies. You just aren’t use to someone firing back. You are so use to bloggers passively watching from the sidelines while you spew your propaganda. This difference is that I have huevos that don’t crack. I am not intimidated nor impressed while you disparage kids across the SGV. If you want to talk football then let’s talk football: programs, strength of schedule, history, games, current events and stats. But the moment you start to talk about minors specifically; children who are guilty of nothing more than loving a game then you have crossed the line. If no one else will take on you cyber bullies, I will.

          • AramT

Would now be a bad time to inform you that it appears Monrovia just picked up another Amat transfer? Should be there on Monday.

          • Valley Athletics

Yeah , heard About it also .

          • The truth and nothing but…

Another player who would have never started at Amat.

          • Mean Joe Green

Yes this would be a bad time to mention that.

          • AMAT 73

            MJG,
Come on now Joe , why do want to label all of The Faithful as blog bullies . I am pretty sure nothing but the truth has no ties to AMAT . Also nobody passively watches from the sidelines when you think an AMAT blogger is spewing crap on here . Don’t put a feather in your cap for something you think you are leading the charge on . We’ve been on here years and I’m speaking of the well know AMAT supporters not some of these 4 years and done types that are pulling your strings . If you want to talk SOS , program , history , or whatever , bring it . But before you do make sure that bazooka is fully loaded . Talk shiat all you want with these types but don’t put us all in that category .So let start with strength of schedule if you care to as you brought it up . I have much respect for Ocat , NY , GP ,KB , but you have a long way to go to measure up to them but keep trying , you may make it one day . As far as any player who leaves it’s the AMAT way to wish them well not challenge the transfer and hope that they find what they couldn’t at AMAT . But I’ll tell you what , they will leave a better player then when they got to AMAT , and that’s a fact .Why do think it’s thread material when it happens and brings upwards of 50 or more posts. And for the mysterious player who you feel is a bad time to mention good luck to him also as you will be getting a solid football player in him and you know it . Just look at your QB this year .

          • Mean Joe Green

Amat 73, I said in my last comment that I did not want to generalize all Amat dads/fans. Ocat, NY, GP and KB all have held me to task about comments they do not agree with. However, Amat fans are conspicuously silent when one of your own goes on a rant to disrespect kids. If these guys are not your own, then hold them to task and let it be known that they are a bad representation of what you guys stand for. Don’t sit silently on the sidelines and wait until I fire back in defense of these kids. I have praised Camargo, Sydney, Wiley and Vaughns in many previous posts. So don’t accuse me of being the problem. You couldn’t even go one post without talking about our QB. This is the crap I am talking about. You guys can’t help yourselves.

FYI, I told Aram that it was a bad time to mention the new transfer, because I was in the middle of an argument defending our transfer practices. I was being funny and letting him know that he was not helping my argument.

          • Glasshouses

Your comments are hilarious because most the bloggers on here wonder why all the Pussycat fans are conspicuously silent when one our you own goes on a rant and disrespects not only kids but all of humanity. But then again, you are from Monrovia after all.

          • AMAT 73

            mjg,
So you consider me saying ,” you will be getting a solid football player ” pertaining the transfer you will be getting and have gotten , like your QB as talking crap ??????? Isn’t Zamora a solid player ? Where is the crap talking there , please break that down for me .

          • Mean Joe Green

Amat 73, my bad. I jumped to conclusions about what you were trying to say. I reread the post and saw my mistake. My apologies.

          • Theblueandgold

I think the truth was mostly pointing out the fact that everyone knew Scoby lived in Azusa and never moved for any of his transfers despite the fact that he was always approved based on a change of address. Neither Zamora or Bradley were ever going to see the Varsity field at Amat and neither one are scholarship material so I think the truth was just using them as examples.

          • The truth and nothing but…

            Well said sir!

          • Mean Joe Green

The funny thing about it is there are tons of athletes that you could have mentioned, but you chose those three. You both seem to know a lot about two kids that don’t matter. Typical A-Snot behavior. Delusional parents that think that a D1 tag is going to get your little Johnny a look. You can’t buy talent. No matter how much you pay in tuition, your kid still sucks. Worry about your fourth coin flip season before you start talking about our kids. How many scholarship kids did you guys shell out last year?

          • Theblueandgold

Hey, my kid wasn’t a Saturday player on the Freshmen team.

          • Bogus

            -

          • Mean Joe Green

If your name is not Carmargo, Wiley, Vaughns, Sydney or Arcanado, then you might want to remain silent. You Amat dads stick your chest out on the blogs but tuck your tails and bow your heads while you cry to Hags about playing time for little johnny. Grow a pair with your own coach before you come on here like a man. I agree with your coach though; Garbage is garbage even if you shove it in a blue and gold helmet.

          • Theblueandgold

What happened with this post, Mean Joe? Did you start to reply to my post and then remember that if you used your everyday screen name that you would be confirming my analysis? So you scratched that post and re-posted under one of you other screen names, Bogus? Aren’t you the guy that is always accusing others of posting under multiple screen names??? Looks like you’ve been exposed. ROFLMAO

          • Mean Joe Green

No I actually scratched the post, because I went on a rant talking about the dads there at your school. Then I remembered that going after an ant with a bazooka is not the best tactic, because innocent bystanders could get hurt. So for the sake of my friends there at Amat, I took the high road. You know nothing about that. Its called class. You might want to learn about it, because you can’t buy it with $7,000 or cover a lack of class up with blue and gold flags.

          • Theblueandgold

Way to spin it, but I don’t know to many willing to buy it. Everyone knows your the definition of a helicopter dad. I feel sorry for your kid. Funny that a guy like you would even mention the word class.

          • OnBLUE

Don’t go there, dude! JOE AMAT gonna bust out “THE LIST.” And you don’t want that…No really you don’t…

          • Mean Joe Green

Ummm I don’t need the local La Puente historian to tell me what was a fact last year. Stop living in the past, no one else is.

          • The truth and nothing but…

Mean Joe Green aka Blog Bully: You and your compadre started it by calling out a kid and his family and now you are being defensive by continuing to criticize players and families you know absolutely nothing about. My son will line up against ANY of your players any time any place and smack them in the mouth. It’s that simple!

          • Mean Joe Green

Ummm please point out where I was calling out a kid. I defended your ex Quarterback against people who said that he will have problems with CIF. I also stated that no one should say anything about a kid whose chooses to leave a school, because we never question coaches who do the same. YOU and YOUR pals were the ones as usual who try to disparage every kid who leaves your school. Your coach doesn’t do it, so why do you. I am sensing there are deeper emotions at play. Anyone with a third grade education can read that you drew first blood by knocking Nava and then turning your attention to Scoby, Bradley and Zamora. That is the truth and nothing but……

          • The truth and nothing but…

You are an alcoholic calling someone who have a beer an alcoholic. I was knocking Nava? BOY, show me!

          • Mean Joe Green

I was wrong. I can admit that. I saw the comment of TruTH and thought it was you. However, that does not take away from the fact that you were the only one on this thread who decided to talk about kids again. Poe, Scoby, Bradley and Zamora.

          • The truth and nothing but…

            Monrovia alumni?

  • Valley Athletics

I said it would be a risky transfer when news first broke . It’s tough to beat out quarterbacks who have been part of the program since freshman year and are good . Maybe if he stayed, worked hard and competed he could of won the job . Never know now .. Good luck to the kid . Hope he gets to play this year where ever he ends up .

  • Valley Athletics

Aram . Don’t think Cathedral would call . They have a legit D 1 Qb who started freshman year on varsity against Amat . Damien will be a better fit . Last years class of 2016 back up Qb is doing baseball only .dont even know who starter is . I heard it was someone who transfered in from south hills a couple years ago .

    • The truth and nothing but…

Poe went home to Louisana and as far as I know he isn’t coming back.

      • Valley Athletics

That’s why I haven’t heard much about him this year .

        • The truth and nothing but…

I think his family got sick of paying Clarkson all that money but no D1 offers.

      • Jester

        When did Poe leave Cathedral?

        • The truth and nothing but…

I thought I heard Louisiana. Anyway, he left Cathedral and from what I heard he isn’t coming back.

  • TransferBug

He hasn’t attended any fall classes at Amat….but Amat already filed paperwork stating he changed addresses. Interesting.

  • valley baller

So you leave your wife for the new hot chick at work only to find out a few months later that the new hot chick at work would rather be with your boss. So you put your tail between your legs and crawl back to your wife, begging her to take you back. But your wife in the mean time took up with your former neighbor who has been treating her really well. What do you think, does your wife take you back with open arms (despite the fact that your an unfaithful dirt bag with roaming eyes) or does she stick with the guy that treats her like a queen? Good luck trying to convince your teammates that you have their backs and what about the guy that stepped in and took over during Spring, Summer, and half of Fall Camp?

I’m thinking CIF needs to make you eat at least a 30 day sit out period on this move.

    • Pete

So, you’ve been at the same job all your life, right? You’re comparing playing high school football to getting married? Wow, buddy you’ve got to learn how to distinguish some things. Leaving your wife for the hot chick is called adultery which ruins lives. This is a 16 yr old who wants to play high school football and go to college. See the difference?

  • TruTH

The truth is this kid transferred to Bishop Amat hoping to be the starting quarterback. When he understood that he would not start and be the back up for the rest of his high school career he jumped off the ship. I don’t blame him who would want to be a back up for two years. However I do believe he should sit out at least the required 30 days. He will be at Rosemead this fall but it’s an obvious athletic motivated decision to leave Rosemead and return. Does not seem fair for those that were working their butt off while their “teammate” was out working with someone else.

    • AramT

I think that fans/bloggers/readers are taking this harder than Rosemead’s players/coaches are. I understand the sentiments but kids these days are a different breed. 25 years ago if somebody left and tried to come back, the answer would be no.

    • The truth and nothing but…

At the end of the day, the best player should play. I am pretty sure the skill guys are not over thinking it like we are. They are for whoever that can get them the ball. If Nava returns there is no question who’s better and who can get those guys the ball more efficiently.

    • Pete

I know their are “rules” in place, but why do you feel he should sit out? Just because he practiced with another team this summer? I guarantee you Nava worked just as hard or harder with amat. Fair? Why is it unfair to others if a kid and their family take a calculated risk in order to increase the kid’s chances of going to college? You want to punish him by making him sit out? For what? what lesson should he learn? Don’t venture out and take risks?

  • OnBLUE

I was very impressed with Nava’s numbers as a Soph. He will excel wherever he ends up. Kudos to him for at least having the brass to try to play for Bishop Amat! I too wished he could have stuck around longer to compete more but I completely understand the quick decision to transfer. Regardless…wishing him and his family the best of luck and health in his bright future.

    • The truth and nothing but…

OnBLUE: That’s what I am talking about. A classy post. No need to bash or call him out for wanting to play for a better team against better competition.

  • Blue

Hey Nava, come to San Dimas. We will taylor our offense around throwing. Your stats will be legit.

  • Frank Castro

    Aram, Fred and Steve,
Until CIF come up with some real transfer rules that make sense, the School will have to go through all this Drama year in and Year out. It will shift the balance of power every few years if not sooner. The LA Times article was very telling how some school have become powers almost overnight with all of the transfers that come in.
Maybe it will make a good show for the Bravo Network. “The Sports Transfers of So Cal”, just too much drama but then again look at how many Blog post there are for this kid. Good luck at your home School.
    Frankie “C”

  • Spartan Pops

Haggerty sure messed this one up!!! Kid was obviously the better QB and that showed at the Bonita Air Assault. Fact of the matter is that Haggerty had no intention of letting this kid start only to put a fire under the QB’s he already had. If he tells Garcia your 2nd QB he loses Kicker, Punter, and backup QB. Practices showed Nave was the better QB, and quit using the excuse he was as fast on the scramble, that why you have Running backs. Good luck Mr. Nava you will do great things wherever you end up.

    • Speed Kills

Look I don’t agree with everything Hags does but on this he’s been giving each QB a shot to stand out. Nava is a good kid but he hadn’t separated himself as a front runner at all especially in the type of offence they run. Truth is Nava came in Amat as a decent QB but will rejoin Rosemead as a developed QB based on what he has learned in his short stay. Good luck to him

  • Spartan Pops

Wishing the Amat Lancers all the best, but I think Haggerty screwed the pooch here. Time will tell…
