Bishop Amat is the No. 1 team in California according to CalPreps ratings …

More mythical hardware for the Bishop Amat High School football team.

The Lancers, nationally ranked at No. 24 last week by MaxPreps, has been installed as the No. 1 team in the state, according to the CalPreps.com ratings for the upcoming 2015 season.

Bishop Amat carries a lofty 80.2 rating. No. 2 is St. John Bosco … perennial power De La Salle is No. 4.

The CalPreps Top 10

1. Bishop Amat 80.2
2. St. John Bosco 78.4
3. Corona Centennial 74.9
4. De La Salle 72.8
5. Helix (La Mesa) 67.5
6. Narbonne 63.4
7. Serra 61.6
8. Folsom 60.6
9. Rancho Cucamonga 57.5
10. Vista Murrieta 57.2

Aram’s Take: This rating is sure to receive plenty of backlash, i.e. this nugget I found on Twitter

… but there’s no denying Amat is going to be a force to be reckoned with and will have every chance to live up to this rating. Now, where the hell is Mater Dei? Mission Viejo? Not in the Top 10? But Rancho is?

  • Jefe

That top 10 is the biggest joke I’ve ever seen & it has nothing to do with Amat being #1. Helix at 5? Narbonne, Serra, RC & VM ranked that high & no MD?? Did someone hack CalPreps’ website??

    • Dennis Green

I think Bishop Amat is right where they are post to be.

      • Jefe

Yeah possibly. I didn’t have a problem with Amat’s ranking, tbh. It’s the inclusion of some of these other teams that has me completely baffled.

  • reality

I use Cal Preps only to check non local scores and leagues. It’s pretty good for that. Easy to click through. Beyond that they stink. They like to tout an 90% correct prediction rate. But most games are very easy to predict. When it comes to close spreads they are no better than 50-50. They use some weird algorithym they say but I think all they do is consult local papers and websites. So Cal area does a fine job covering high school sports thus more touted teams get on their list. No way anyone takes Narbonne over Mater Dei or Amat over De La Salle if your a betting man. Just nonsense.

The validity of any of these ratings or rankings or whatever anyone calls their ordering of teams is pretty dang dubious at best. Whether the choices are ranked in Aram’s system, or Fred’s, or by someone posting here on the blog they have only as much substance as we individually are willing to grant them

Even CalPreps says up front that by mid-season, (when they are approaching the most accurate stage), their rankings have nothing to do with what they post before the season begins.

So, as much fun as it is to read about all of these lists, and as amusing as it is to post comments about them we all should admit that they are worth exactly as much as the paper they are printed upon.

Pre-season polls are fun, but that’s all they are. I guess the major criteria has to be returning personnel, starters as well as number of Seniors, reputation of the coach and staff all compared to the other candidates. Looking to be a fun and competitive season….

    • Dennis Green

Well if reputation of the coach is a criteria then bishop Amat will have some issues. Let’s just say they would not be as high.

      • Conq’76

If it were ONLY coaching then De La Salle and CC would be at the top…

      • Root for the boys

Yes. Yes, there will be some issues. He is who we think he is!!!!! (right, Dennis!)

    • OnBLUE

Everyone remembers LB Christian Wiley and how dominant he was at the linebacker position last season. He had 108 tackles with 13 sacks on the season. Little was said about returning LB Matt Terlizzi. He had 104 tackles and also had 13 sacks…as a Junior. I expect big things from him. Amat is returning a large number of players who like, Terlizzi, did not make many stories last season but were none-the-less very productive on the team.

Now thats talking football, It’s important for the fans as well as the writers to mention the unmentioned so that the rest of the sports world get a whiff of who they are. This is the best post you have put together in a decade. I would like for you to bring up others on the team that may not have gotten press so that those names get their proper and due respect.

  • Dennis Green

Bishop Amat is who we thought they would be!!!

    • MoreKetchup

“We” all think they are a top 5 school, but I don’t think too many people would disagree that they haven’t showed YET that they are the best in the PAC 5 and if they can’t show that yet, how can they be the best in California?

      • OnBLUE

I agree but that also applies to everyone else as well. No one has showed that they are the best in the Pac-5 or the best in California yet.

    • Root for the boys

After Mater Dei and Servite take you out, you’ll be sounding more like old man Jim Mora’s “Playoffs?!!!, Playoffs”?!!!!!

  • OnBLUE

Since Aram is going to accuse Amat fans of doing these things anyways, I guess it’s time to puff our chests and dance in the streets! LOL!

    • AMAT 73

      OB,
Speaking of dancing in the streets , are you going to the ticker tape parade going down Fairgrove tomorrow touting the # 1 ranking . I heard you better get there early as the crowds will be huge . Also don’t forget to enter the chest pumping and thumping contest in the gym after the parade !!!!! HAHAHAHA !!!!!!

      • AramT

You guys dont work with Freddie

        • AMAT 73

          Aram ,
Didn’t you know , he’s the Grand Marshall of the parade . He will be in the lead car , the BMW utility cart you see at the games .

  • OnBLUE

I too am shocked at BA’s #1 rating. At the end of last season, I played with the idea of BA starting THIS season at #1 or #2. I got shot down by everyone and their mother of course…everyone pointed to Centennial and Serra outranking the Lancers early. Now people…. I’m not one to say that I was right and everyone else was wrong but I was right and everyone else was wrong. Hahahaha!

  • Valley Athletics

Click on the link . In just a couple days the rankings have already changed . De la Salle is at second now . Rancho has dropped to 14th . Mater Dei move up to 8th .

  • jcaz

I was hoping that they were looking at playing Bishop Gorman this year if only because they didn’t have a home game with that Texas team lined up this year.

  • GO AMAT
