UPDATE: Bishop Amat’s Thursday football practice was delayed over an hour after players protested the suspension of teammate Torreahno Sweet by refusing to practice.

Bishop Amat High School football team running back Torreahno Sweet will miss Friday’s game against Servite and possibly the following week against Colony after being suspended by Lancers head coach Steve Hagerty.

Sweet was the lone offensive bright spot in Amat’s Week 0 loss to Mater Dei last Friday night. He rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-21 defeat.

Something went awry at Wednesday’s practice. Sweet was lifted from team drills and was held out after trying to return minutes later. He was informed before Thursday’s practice that he would be suspended for Friday’s game and could return to practice on Monday as a scout team player.

This isn’t the first rift between Hagerty and Sweet. Earlier this offseason, Hagerty said that Sweet was no longer part of the program but would not disclose why.

Sweet missed all of spring practice and the summer passing circuit but was back on the team in time for fall camp. Sweet was a major force behind Amat’s success last season. After being injected into the starting lineup at mid-season, Sweet finished with 851 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns.

With its ground game purring, Amat was able to win a three-way share of the Mission League championship and advance to the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs.

Bishop Amat is considered to be one of the main contenders for the Pac-5 Division championship. The Lancers had their egos bruised a bit last week after being upset by Mater Dei on a regionally televised game.

Servite, another Pac-5 contender, enters Friday game at 1-0 after beating up on Fountain Valley in its season opener last Friday.
