Early returns are in and it ain’t pretty …

THIS PERTAINS TO THE SGV ONLY: Last season’s senior class was the best I have ever seen in the SGV in my 10 years on the job and another 10 or so following semi-close. So it’s only fitting that the following year things are going to be down. And man, according to the buzz I’m hearing (and not hearing), things are REALLY DOWN in a lot of key places. Personally, I don’t really care if it’s true because these seasons are also fun to cover in their own way. Outside of Northview, Arroyo and Los Altos, the things I’m hearing are not good. Amat is supposedly wayyyyyyyyy down in terms of skill guys. How could the Lancers not be (down) compared to last year? Charter Oak, I hear is decent, but not great. And so on … Maybe I’m wrong. I hope I’m wrong. We’ll see.

  • Jastrab

What about Damien….Do they have some type of protective order?

  • SGVchris

I heard that Amat has some siblings of former lancer standouts coming in. 4 or 5 really good athletes from what I’ve heard.

    • AramT

I’m starting to hear something of this nature, too. Hope it’s true. Time to load up the Lancers again!

      • Spam Burger

We now know Vaughns is not one of them coming to Amat. Going to SJB.

        • GO BIG BLUE

Good luck to him. That drive is going to be terrible….hopeful SJB excepts him with open arms…Amat is good to go. Heard its a Hag issue. He needs to go already…

          • Valley Athletics

i drive to Downey from diamond bar a couple times a week. It’s horrible . Bellflower is a couple miles further .

        • Jastrab

Can one HS – regardless of how cohesive the team is – have more than 2 WR how potentially are 4 or 5 star kids? Bosco is loaded, but does anyone want to weigh in on how many skill kids will stay when the rock needs to get shared. Also, DJ is potentially two years removed from varsity with a pretty good QB ahead of him in Mitchell – Will he play TE or weight it out until his junior year. I really am curious when you bring in this much talent someone needs to weight or share the ball for 4 years. In this day of 8th grade stars will they want to play varsity as an 9th grader or at the latest a 10th grader.

          • Valley Athletics

That’s the risk of going to Bosco as a skill player . Every year they have a couple good players transfer out because of playing time . They also get highly recruited players who transfer in and take the positions of players who wait there turn . Terell Bynum ttansfered out of Bosco to servite and became a top recruit . Now he is back at Bosco . I saw boscos frosh team play Amats varsity team at the HB tourney . They had some studs at receiver and where able to put up some points against Amats first team .they won 3 games against some varsity teams . Saw the footage of this years incoming class playing with team Aiga 7 on 7 . Team is loaded .but are they going to want to wait until junior or senior year to see the field . This past season Bosco had a couple skill players that became starters until senior year . Amat had players who left because they knew they where not going to be starters for there junior year .Blake Jenkins transfered out last summer to Pasadena and had a growth spurt and now has 2 D1 offers . This season he transfered to Centennial for his senior year . Noah Rigney another player who transfered out because there was no way he would get the touch the field with Tyler and Trevon on the field . He is now at Chino Hills and has a couple Of Smaller school offers . Both these players would of been key players if they stuck around at Amat . When schools have good talent ahead of you you have to make those type of decisions .

The PC that is anti football concussion syndrome is really starting to have an impact. Numbers are down in many programs as parents steering their kids into sports other than football. The football meat houses(Amat, Bosco etc.) will be fine for awhile as there are plenty of parents hoping to hit the jackpot with their athletic sons but the normal schools(Bonita, Sonora etc.) will have some immediate impact. Soccer anyone?

    • AramT

No! Soccer ain’t safe either. Don’t you watch Real Sports? They did a profile on women’s soccer players having concussions because of headers. Of course, it’s just part of Real Sports and Bryant Gumbel’s quest to reduce the sports world to tennis and golf.

      • Don

More than that. If you would release my comment from yesterday, he could read the abstract.

      • Jastrab

AYSO banned headers in at all levels of the game this year. Concussions are real in soccer and may rival football. I don’t think long term studies have been done in soccer, but it is not safe harbor for parents re-thinking football. Football also has some new helmet technology coming out finally that should help a lot!

        • AramT

This country is soft and getting softer. Then don’t effin play sports. How about that? No girls. No learning to gain from pain. No big money. No learning the learning lesson of putting your all in something and still come up short.

We don’t even need scoreboard anymore, I guess.

          • mike1231

Walter Thurmond…soft! Finally gets to play, in line to get paid, and retires to preserve his future health.

      • reality

I guess you missed the report about the Arizona country club golfer that hooked his tee shot into the tennis courts and killed a 80 year old doubles player. The Japanese golfer later committed Hari Kiri. Crossword puzzles are a sport now.

I’m not at all surprised to hear that this might be the case. Interestingly, if Amat performs very poorly this year, do you think it might impact them in the coming years ?
Last year the Lancers lost a close game to Mater Dai. This year it could be a total wipe out if only because Mater Dai had mostly under class men as starters last year, and those guys are far better now than they were a year ago. MD should be very very good this year.
You know Aram, as funny as this may sound, Amat might be given “Relief” simply because it took them four years the last time to field a team that could realistically compete with quality teams in the Pac 5.
If Amat takes another 4 years, then they might be playing for a division two tittle by then instead of the big enchilada.
    Just sayin…….

Mater Deis freshman team beat everyone by 30 or more points this season . Amats freshman team lost by 30 and so did Bosco . I caught a Amat Freshman game and thought they where as good and loaded as the class of 2016 when they where freshman . Advantage I would give this freshman class because of there Qb who is about 6′ 1″ and ready for Varsity . He came in Saturday down 21 points against Sierra Canyon and was an extra point away from taking them to overtime .Amats projected starter Jacob Amaro who is still playing baseball couldn’t move the ball for 4 series and got pulled . They have a lot of good pieces that coaches have to figure out how to use . from what I saw they just lack that a receiver like Tyler Vaughns . Tyler sweet and Seth cloud are solid but not Tyler . Freshman track star Caleb Roberson will bring some much needed speed when he joins the team . Kid is only a freshman and took 3rd in the 300 hurdles this past weekend in the cif finals . also took second in the long jump . He was a deadly kick returner and receiver past freshman season .thought the defense looked decent . Couple junior Dbs where setting out or missing and coaches where switching a lot of players . Running backs are going to be solid . sophmore Dom Barrera has bulked up and will carry the load . Really liked the little freshman running back Christopher Huero Lopez . Kid has hands and is quick and shifty . I think Amat will have a chance to make playoffs .

      • AramT

Now that’s good to hear. Didn’t know the frosh team was so loaded. Plus, I keep hearing some decent transfers may be coming shortly.

      • jcaz

That’s for that well written update on the team.

      • AMAT73

        VA,
The freshman team was very solid . I think the team will surprise many doubters out there once the season begins . Still a lot of work to do but there is the time to get it done by seasons beginning . I say AMAT takes league and we will see where the chips fall in the playoffs . Very good overview of what we will see in the fall VA . I’ve heard there are a few gems coming in as freshman , so we are getting the players to build it the AMAT way . And if some solid transfers come in as Aram is hearing , all the better . GO AMAT !!!!

        • Valley Athletics

now its up to the freshman class to put in the extra work and develop into great players like the class of 2016 class did .

    • AramT

As you know, I think Amat belongs in D-2. Yes, I know Amat made the Final Four two straight years in D-1. But that was the best team in 20 years. I’d love to see the program win a couple a D-2 titles and then see what the cat drags in as far as incoming classes.

      • jcaz

I know you would Aram 🙂

  • GO BIG BLUE

    Blah blah blah
