La Mirada slays the Trinity League dragon, Tyler Nevens runs wild, Elijah Blades tweets at halftime and Amat gets worked

lmhs

What an opening night. Let’s get right to the talking points …

La Mirada 21, Orange Lutheran 14: Congrats to Mats head coach Mike Moschetti. He kept taking on the Trinity League and finally beat one. I told Moschetti earlier Friday that if he beat O-Lu, it would be time to retire. Nothing left to do. He won’t do that, but wow. LM is a powerhouse in the making. Who knows what happens the rest of the way, but this program might be on its way to D-2 and maybe D-1 someday soon. This is why I ranked LM No. 1 in the all-encompassing rankings. What a program!

Tyler Nevens runs for 285, four TDs: Los Altos’ star running back is ALL THAT and then some. Did I mention Nevens has a 4.0 GPA?

Muir star Elijah Blades tweets at halftime: Haha. I love this kid. Elijah Blades was having a good game vs. Compton at halftime, so he decided to tweet about it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Blades reiterated to his followers that he was going to “go off” this year. And yeah, he did just that. Blades is a verbal commit to Florida.

Temple City routed by Pasadena Poly: That’s my alma mater, baby! No, not Poly. Not that smart. TC! We’re still in trouble obviously.

Bishop Amat slammed by MD: This was the rout everyone saw coming. I’m more concerned about the Amat parents and fans and if they killed each other in the stands.

The reality Amat got worked and have work to do . the good news is the mission is not that strong . Mater Dei is now on that level as CC and Bosco and will roll everyone but CC and Bosco . Good win by La Mirada . I had mentioned that OLU would struggle with the new offense and La Mirada could upset .when they tally the points for next year La Mirada will be in division 2 . Looks like this is Los Altos year . Don’t like that all these local teams will now be in different CiF divisions . No more local CiF battles .

    • Semper Titanius

Exactly! Been saying that all along. New format wrecks all the local CIF match-ups. It has multiple other problems as well, but that one really a shame. Oh well.

  • Conq’76

Great start for LA, but I’m curious. Looks like the defense held up, but did they demonstrate they could throw the ball even a little bit? or will opposing teams be able to stack the box with 8 or 9 all year long?

    • LA Homer

The QB can throw and extend plays the first play was a touch down pass…the coaching staff will put him in a situation to be successful we have a new OC so he knows everyone will stack…..we have good receivers this year and a QB that can throw with zip.

      • Conq’76

Great to know, I loved Campbell’s heart last year, but he could just not release the ball….how about our DB’S? Another historical weakness….I think i’m gonna be able to see them against Wilson next week at La Puente High School…

        • LA Homer

DB looks great SM didn’t complete a pass down field when they attempt to throw it was short and DB wear ball hawking all night….defense looks great SM didn’t score till late in the 3rd by that time we had alot of our subs in.

Nevens is a very good runner, one has to hit him in the first three steps, as it takes a few steps to get his motor running. That is the thing a d would have to do is get into the back field by flooding the box.

The challenge would be, beat us with your pass.. LA may or may not be able to do that. It is unclear to me. But one thing is clear, if you let Nevens get four or five steps before he gets touched.. it is not going to work out well for any LA opponent.

    • Semper Titanius

Yep, looking at it from the other sideline, LA QB very composed, accurate, smart. Not that they needed to against us, but they should let him uncork it more often. LA absolutely will need it to hang in what used to be the upper echelons of the Central. Congrats to Nevens and the Conqs. Nice start on what will be a good season.

I Love it Amat, no more A Stickers in West Covina.

    • Valley Athletics

There will always be A stickers all over the SoCal .

      • Coach Snagerty

Those will never go away and you know it.

      • jcaz

VA, so very true. In fact, about three years ago I flew in to San Antonio Texas to visit some friends of mine who were once in the Marine Corps with me. Got off the plane, picked up a rental and stoped 1st a convience store to buy a few things. Low and behold, there was a car parked in that very parking lot that had a gold Amat sticker on the back windshield. Wow !

    • AMAT73

      F1,
You are dreaming if you think a loss like that will vanish the stickers . Heck they made it thru the low years prior to Hags coming aboard , and they will make it thru this .

    • fast freddy

any purple and white stickers there?????

  • Conq’76

Sounds like a full contingent. So important today when a strong team can both meet your strength if you’ve got only one and exploit your weaknesses.

  • AramT

Are we already circling the calendars for that Los Altos-CO game? Talk about potentially huge!

    • Semper Titanius

No way. Nevens is an absolute legit beast, but CO will have way too many weapons, and LA has little else to compete with a team at CO’s level. Won’t be close.

      • LA Homer

That what they said last year and we put 35 on them…before that game no one scored on CO and it was a junior class against alot of CO seniors….I believe they said the samething that it wouldn’t be close……

        • Semper Titanius

What was the final score of that game? Think CO may have been a little overrated last year. Probably not this year.

          • LA Homer

2 touchdowns…..I believe they score with like 30 seconds left in the game to run the score up…doubt they were overrated because they were favorite to win it all last season….

          • Semper Titanius

That’s what I mean–favored to win it all, and they got handled in the finals. Plus, they just seemed always to be ranked so unrealistically high by press. I think LA will have a very successful season, but I don’t think they will even scare CO this year.

          • LA Homer

I remember 2 season ago when LA went to CIF Championship…CO homecoming game we were expected to get blown out because it was CO first year back in the Hacienda and went in there and beat them with the odds against them..ALL I’m saying is don’t underestimate LA….since CO return the series is 1-1 both have been to the ship and lost…..seems even to me…….will see when they play.

          • Semper Titanius

Good points. I forgot 2014 CIF run. That was a series of impressive LA wins as a fairly high seed.

  • mr power

Has LA turned into the 95′ Lancers?

  • WCDan

Nathan Tilford 49 West Covina 14.
The game was actually up for grabs for almost three quarters, it was 20 to 14 just three plays away from the forth quarter.
Then a combination of a crucial WC mistake, and Colony realizing that they just had to feed the ball to Tilford as West Covina was wearing down from trying to tackle the speedy 6’2″, 220lb bruiser, and before you know it, three more Tilford touchdowns in the blink of an eye. Not sure Why Tilford and his brother left Upland for Colony, but he will be the difference maker in many games for Colony this year. I still think West Co will have a good year as long as they stay healthy.

  • Jefe

Great win for the La Mirada program but we all know the “dragon” in the Trinity League is a two-headed one in St. John Bosco & Mater Dei.

Let’s see what happens Friday night in Bellflower.

  • AMAT73

Well I think AMAT ran into the buzzsaw on Friday night . MD has an excellent team with a whole lot of weapons . We were totally out played and just made too many mistakes . On the positive side I believe we have found our starter for the next 3 years . Archuleta will be one good QB once he gets more reps with the first team . Some good receivers out there and the O had a couple of good drives but inexperience and maybe some nerves got in the way and stalled a few drives . The team will learn and with Servite up next they have another tough battle . Only this time they have some experience in games like this , we will see how much they learned on Friday night . GO AMAT !!!!

    • Jefe

Game against Servite will be interesting. I’m not totally sold on the Friars yet.
