On Saturday, while visiting Glendale with colleague Tania Chatila, she pointed out this on a Glendale light pole:

Google "swastika" and you'll see it's been around since long before the NAZI's.

The Swastika -- a Sanskrit word -- manifests in cultures throughout the world, but most visibly festoons many a public surface in Asia, from Pakistan to Vietnam. An icon of significance to both Hindus and its derivative Buddhists, it is often associated with Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of prosperity.

I've seen those in Glendale but doubt its anything more than coincidental to the height of teen white-supremacist gangs there in the 70s and 80s. Would be interesting to find out what the back story is.
