Mayor calls trailer park upkeep 'deplorable'

This letter, written by South El Monte Mayor Blanca Figueroa, ran today in our paper. I wonder if this is foreshadowing any redevelopment efforts by the city of trailer parks, as has been done in Monterey Park. There are also talks on the table of developing former trailer park land in Rosemead.

Keep up trailer parks

It is unfortunate how some of our mobile home/trailer property owners treat renters, not only in South El Monte but in other surrounding cities.

First of all, the upkeep is deplorable and can sometimes be a health and safety issue. These owners make enough off of these people, most of which are on a fixed income, usually seniors or single parents.

Many of these homes are too old to move, so relocation is out of the question. Simply by paving the area where these homes are located, adding sufficient lighting and adding shrubs and plants can help an area look a thousand times better. People have the right to live in a nice, upkept place that they call home.

I want to thank all other owners who have pride and respect for their renters. Others can learn from you. Your places are very nicely kept up.

Blanca M. Figueroa
Mayor
South EL Monte

With all due respect, who made Mrs. Fiqueroa the ruler of the of south El Monte?
If a property has health and safety violations, I am sure she has got the folks over at city hall all over it. If the property is being used in a legal, and legally safe fashion, then who cares what her vision is for the property.
In fact, she has no experience, or specialized knowledge, when it comes to real estate development or use.
And she appears to have little knowledge of basic economics...sure the property owner can make improvements, then the RENT goes up to the tenants.
She should stick to what she knows...of course, I have no idea what that might be?

I am happy to see that someone cares about us RENTERS. It is not a matter of vision, but that of a clean and liveable space thatwecall ours.I wish we had a Mayor that is interested in helping people out. We need a voice. Why not her? So don't knock someone you don't even know. She does alright. You go Mrs. Mayor Figueroa. Thank you for caring. Garcia Family-Renters

Dear Typical Renter...

If your property is not "clean and liveable" then call the health department...they require property to be safe.

However, you probably just want the property to be "nicer"....I am sure the owner will be glad to make improvements, you will just have to pay more rent.

But I am guessing that you would like the landlord to improve the property and still pay the lower rent....you know, subsidize you.

Don't forget...you can always go buy your own property..then you can pay the mortgage, the taxes, the assessments, the city license fees, the utility bills, the insurance bills...well you get the idea.

Maybe the Mayor would be willing to have the city
subsidize you...they could
give you the down payment, or pay the mortgage
mortgage......probably not though.

It appears she would like to have private property owners foot the bill instead.

Gilman where do you get off giving advice? Who died and made you Mr.Know It All? You seem to have a coment for everything...but really know nothing. Talk about a chip on your shoulders. Oh, by the way...can you look into your crystal ball and tell us all where and when the next big quake will hit? Yeah right. Stick to what you think you know, whatever that may be.

Oviously Gilman knows absolutely nothing of what it is like to be a renter in a trailer park. Of course many of us renters would like to buy a home some day. Who wouldn't? If you would take your head out of the clouds you could see that the cost of gas and food along with every thing else has sky rocketed. I don't need to take on a cost that I can't afford. Have you not witnessed thousands of homes falling into foreclosure? Are you for real? I like were I live, but there are some places that are terrible. For the record Gilman, we all know good and well that if we complain the rent goes up. Ifff something gets fix the rent goes up. Who needs that? Not anyone. We try to fix things as best we can by ourselves. We do pay for utilities and trash. It does't fall out of the sky. It just shows that you Gilman knows not a darn thing about us renters. We don't want anyone to take on the cost of what is done. Especially private property owners. It is the responsibility of the landlord. Are you a home owner? Do you know where the next meal is comimg from for your family? Do you have a good secure job with with medical benefits and retirement? We would all appreciate not reading your nonsense. Really.

OK..now I am really confused.
You say "We don't want anyone to take on the cost of what is done. Especially private property owners. It is the responsibility of the landlord."

well..the landlord is the private property owner! Maintaining a property in a legal and safe condition is required by law. Improving a property is NOT required...instead, it is a result of market conditions. If the owner improves the property, he/she will attract a higher rent....basic economics.
Sounds like you would love to continue to enjoy low rent, but get all of the benefits of a property that brings a much higher price....that is simply unrealistic. If you want a better place, it is your responsibility...not the owners...not the governments....yours.
