Term limits on city councils
If there was a vote to place term limits on your city council member's seats, how would you vote?

Term limits, though well intentioned, are making America weak. Competition is the back bone of our country, our society. It actually takes some time for elected officials to learn how to govern. Those who want to limit service have no faith in our system or the voters. We already have term limits, they are called elections. Ask Mayor Tom Sykes of Walnut or former Mayor Lou Perez of La Puente if elections are an effective way to limit terms.

In general, I do not support term limits. For example, I think the term limits on our state legislators is too strict, and has created a system where they are forever looking at the next rung in their career. They have no incentive to plan for the long term because they know none of them will be there by the time the chickens come home to roost.
At the same time, I know there are some city council members who have been in office for decades. People vote for them because of name recognition and not because there's anything they've ever done for their city.
For both state legislators and city council members, I think twelve years is long enough: Long enough to learn the job, long enough to make an impact, but not so long that you become a career politician instead of a citizen-legislator.
