How did that get in there?

A letter that snuck into a public stack of records containted information that Rosemead officials said shouldn't have been made public yet. The letter was written by a developer wanting to attract national retailers to the Levitx Furniture site on Glendon Way, off the 10 Freeway. In the letter, it names Best Buy as the interested party.

Yesterday, I got a call after my story was edited and out of my hands asking that we hold off running the store name because they are still negotiating with Best Buy. Normally, the city likes to hold off on announcing those sorts of things until the deal is finalized, officials said.

Well, we ran the story. If the negotiating goes bad, don't blame me. I'm just the messenger.

With Circuit City stores closing, Best Buy might feel it makes better business sense to move into the Circuit City spaces...so if the deal fails, its not because of a "press leak". Also, there are two profitable Best Buys close by - Pasadena and West Covina.

Correction: Circuit City chain is up for sale....not closing.

So are there going to be recalls when city council members vote yes to allow Best Buy to develop the property? What are their benefits? wages?

Aren't their products made in China? Big corporation squeezing out long time Rosemead Radio Shack type businesses?

Oh wait, is there a union involved in any of this? If there are union jobs there will be no protest.

Pravda's funny, because she doesn't let pesky facts get in the way of her little rants.

1. Best Buy isn't coming in across the street from an elementary school.

2. The building isn't going to be backed right up, literally a stone's throw away from residences.

3. Best Buy is not going to generate more than a fraction of the 10 to 12 thousand car trips a day that Wal-Mart generates.

4. Best Buy is not seeking to operate 24 hours a day.

5. No one's going to have to change the city's general plan to allow for retail uses on this parcel, since retail stores have been operating there for years.

6. Best Buy isn't going to take 23 acres of open space and pave it all over.

7. Best Buy will probably generate about as much tax revenue on its 3 acres of land as Wal-Mart generates on its 23 acres of land. Which decision makes more sense?

8. Radio Shack isn't exactly a "mom and pop" operation, is it?

9. Best Buy isn't going to generate any more union jobs than Wal-Mart. Then again, despite Pravda's erroneous beliefs, the residents who opposed Wal-Mart didn't give a rat's patootey about union jobs--they just didn't want to have to be living next door to the montrosity they are living next door to today.
