BP's been served

So remember that "interesting thing" that was supposed to happen at the Baldwin Park Council Meeting tonight? --- Well, it happened.

Greg Tuttle, a Baldwin Park businessman and an avid speaker during the meetings, served recall papers on council members Anthony Bejarano, Marlen Garcia and Monica Garcia.

Reporter Brian Day, who was at the meeting (I had to play night editor back in the office) told me Tuttle had this to say as he handed the paperwork to the city clerk:

"At this time, it gives me great pleasure to present the City Council with the recall papers for Anthony Bejarano, Marlen Garcia and Monica Garcia. Consider yourselves served."

Day said the council just kind of sat and stared at the paperwork. He said they did not address the incident during the entire public communications period. Day walked out after to talk to people.

We'll be following up the story in Thursday's paper, but it sounds like the council has quite a fight ahead of them.

On what grounds are they being served? I am totally shocked, but not surprized. It was about time that someone from our city saw through these three. Too bad for our city of Baldwin Park. Now we are just like the other cities around us. We are faced with three councilmembers that answer to us the voters. Quite a fight ahead of them is right. Put on the gloves. What a big disapointment for us here who elected them into office.

Baldwin Park Voter said:

What grounds is a good question. I voted for Bejarano and Monica Garcia (although not for Marlen Garcia for personal reasons). So did my entire family, and most, if not all of my cul de sac. And I know I personally feel like the City has been moving in a good direction. Whenever I have complaints or concerns, Bejarano and Mayor Lozano have always been responsive. So, while the other comment poster might feel that it's "about time," I'm still a supporter of the council members I voted for, because the City is looking good and I like their ideas for the future. Although there has been some crime issues of late, my emails to my councilmembers actually was responded to, and I was satisfied with the answers I was given, and I'm confident in giving the council the benefit of the doubt that they're doing something about that too.
So unless there's some kind of wrong doing or illegal stuff I don't know about it, I think the people that are trying to do the recall are the ones with the fight ahead of them. I'm not sure what it takes to get the recall done, but I suspect that it requires a lot of people to be unhappy with this council. Personally, I just don't see there being enough people that feel that way.
And if this recall is just about the downtown stuff, well, then this will really be uphill.
I mean, these people are trying to recall these council members, yet the board member corona is still on the school board? Talk about backward priorities.
So recall people, I'll save you some time: Don't bother coming to Masline.

So is the City going to have to pay for a recall election? So much for a balanced budget.

What a great story for you two. Who cares what the grounds for a recall are let's just stick it to those electeds. What amazes me more is the fact that any nutjob out there has reporters like you eating out of there grimy, ax-holding hands. Instead of the Leftover Ladies you are more like the Gadfly Hags.

What will it take for these people to get the picture? The people against the project tried to run someone for council (Saldana), and lost. They pushed and pushed for Prop 98, and lost. They talk about the "will of the people," but it seems to me the people have already spoken at least twice before! Good luck getting the recall accomplished. How many votes did Saldana get in the last election?

Saldana is more like Soldouta

Recalls do cost alot. City Clerks have to validate the signatures. It is based on 10% of the registered voters. An election all together from $26,000 to $38,000 depending on work done. Ckeck your last cost for an election held in your city. There is your answer. Good luck.

So why weren't Pacheco and Lozano served with recall papers?

Pacheco and Lozano probably weren't served because you can't recall an elected official within a certain amount of time after their elections. If I remember correctly, the two were re-elected not too long ago.

Oh, and p.s. LOVE the kitty picture.

WCW: Monica Garcia was elected in the same election as pachueco and Lozano.

If BP has a population of between 50 and 100K, they'll need 15% of the registered voters to sign the recall petition.

It seems unlikely to me that the city could run a recall election for less than $50,000.

You can't start a petition agaisnt someone who was elected less than 90 days ago or has less than six months left in their term.

Gathering petition signatures for a municipal (or water board) position is a lot harder than for a statewide petition, because you almost have to go door to door to get the signatures, and that takes a lot of volunteers or a lot of paid help. I'd be willing to bet that neither the BP nor the Alvarez recall petitions ever lead to an election.

I stand corrected. I don't know why the others weren't served then. Don't know much about BP politics. Could it be that Mayor Lozano is the most popular guy in town? There's a street named after him, for crying out loud! I really don't know ANYTHING about Pacheco, so I couldn't speculate.

Ask the kitty. Maybe it knows.

Seriously, served? Someone pass the popcorn...Geeeze, these councilmembers are really trying to help the city of Baldwin Park and they get treated like this?? Residents have to remember that the council does live in the same city and that they also want to see their neighborhood progress. I'm guessing that this recall fiasco has something to do with the downtown project. I understand that there are little mom and pop shops that have been around for sometime but when do we start the process of moving our city forward? While other surronding cities are advancing, BP's downtown scene looks like it is from a bad seventies movie. Now that we have a chance to have something special develop, lets see that it happens people.

I should have said that $50K is the lower bound of my estimate for the cost of a special election; I wouldn't be surprised if it cost $100K. It would be less if they could consolidate it with a regularly-scheduled election, but there's no way I can see that they could possibly get the petition answered, approved, circulated, signed, and verified soon enough to make the November election.

Haven't seen the promised story yet; maybe tomorrow? That story should summarize the official reasons for the recall. Legally-speaking, any reason can be advanced.

Recalled huh? From last night they looked really worried! Yeah right! The council said thank you next! haha. The high light for me was the police department ruins police cars while running them in park. Better watch the Transmission oil. Give me a break.. More like a pissed off resident doesn't know how to keep enforcment off his butt. I'm trying to figure out who is worse BP or City of Compton! By the way you can put the recall to rest. The city has more funds than the residents..

Actually the City Of El Monte ranks first in being the worst in regards to the drunk, cheating, nasty Mayor Gutierrez and three clowns, who do nothing but rubber stamp away. They are truely spineless jelly fish. Barrios, Gomez and Ishigaki. Now, something most definately smells rotten at city hall. Even the city Manager Mussenden and City Attorney Moseley are part of the "Rat Pac." In this case the city has way less funds than the residents. Talk about law enforcement. The El Monte Police run city hall and the four amigos.
Your city council is a walk in the park kind of group. It could be worse like your neighbor down under the Bermuda Triangle, El Monte. Where politicians go to end a good thing. Really!!!

The story appeared in today's paper:

I sort of expected a link to a .pdf of the 200 word statement, but it wasn't there.

Looks like BP has less than 50K voters registered, so the recall proponents will need at least 20% of the registered voters to sign the petition.

As I said earlier, people who haven't participated in a municipal recall campaign have no idea how hard it is to qualify one for the ballot. Proportionately-speaking, it's way harder than doing a statewide recall (they only need to get 10% of the number of people who voted in the previous statewide electiopn, which works out to 4-6% of the registered voters.

You have to *really* piss off your constituents and have some extremely commited proponents who are willing to work their tails off to get a recall election qualified against you at the city level. signatures.

Just looked at the article. Wow, this recall looks like it aged Bejarano 30 years. I never I thought I'd say this:

I miss Karen Rubin.

I have seen nothing but improvements in Baldwin Park. I personally feel that the city is moving in a very positive direction. We have come a long way from the gang infested streets that I was afraid of when I was a child. Every time I have an issue regarding the city, Anthony Bejarano responds in a timely manner. It feels good to have someone in the city council that has Baldwin Park's best interests in mind.
