El Monte sewer fee approved

| | Comments (8) |

Just got off the phone with El Monte City Manager Jim Mussenden, who said that at last night's meeting the City Council approved a sewer fund that will bring in about $3.5 million to the city. The money will be used to improve the city's aging 136 miles of sewer lines.

This will cost a single family home about $8.50 a month.

Before the approval by the City Council on Tuesday, El Monte did not have such a fee.

Among the improvements will be replacement of 117,012 lineal feet of pipe, which will cost $35 million over 20 years; replacement of 508 manholes, which will cost $2.8 million over 20 years; and the rehabilitation of four sewer pump stations, which will cost nearly $550,000 over 20 years.

The council would not have approved the fund if it received letters from a majority of the residents opposing it. Mussenden said that the city received only 126 letters out of the nearly 118,000 parcels that are impacted.

WE do have some real problems with our sewer system, now maybe we can keep our city council from crapping on its residents.

Where is the money coming from? The city is already in the red. Remember they are passing out pink slips as we blog. Can they get us into any more debt? Can Mussenden give us an honest responce for a change?
Do we have the money?

We got a notice in the mail back in May about a public hearing to consider a new sewer charge. There were a couple of town hall meetings my wife and i attended to get informaiton. Anyone against the charge was allowed to send in a No vote. On tuesday they counted all the No votes and less than 50% voted no so the fee was put on. The money can only be used for our sewers.

Now that El Monte has this so called money Emily can keep her daughter and son in law employed in the citys dime. Bet they won't get a pink slip.
Right Mommy Dearest.

Although I am happy for the repair of our sewer lines. Less food on my table and gas for my old car. But oh well. We still get stuck with a bill in the end. That is progress in good ole El Monte. Thank You Ernie and Emily. UGHHHHH!!!

Well unless she works in the sewer department i don't think what you say is true. You sound pretty angry. All five of the city council people vote this in and there were a few residents who had not problem with it.

I'm sorry. But I am very much upset over this matter. I feel that I can no longer trust Mayor Gutierrez and the City Council They are not truthful to us. What other lies will they use to cover up their other lies. It becomes hard to believe in someone. Especially when they keep doing what they do. Lie, cheat and hide hehind the truth. Can you honestly blame me, or anyone else from El Monte?

As a long time resident of El Monte I strongly agree with you. My neighbors and I just had a bbq. All we could agree on, besides the hot weather, was how we no longer have any faith in Gutierrez, Gomez, Ishigaki and Barrios. They are on their own planet that does not include El Monte. We are so fed up with these four that they literly make us sick. We were led down the wrong path with their campaign lies and promises. We will never vote for them again.

Dear Anonymous from EM also known as Pat Wallach. It is one thing for you and your husband to do your usual hatchet jobs on the other council members but for you to now rip Barrios is a new low. you are truly a fine pair of scumbags the two of you. while everyone else at the city is trying to make tough decisions to deal with the city's problems your are just looking for people to blame as if you had no role in any of this yourself. Let's face it your term as mayor was not a "golden age"; el monte fell behind alot and many of the problems we have not started then. You are true hack politician. Councilman Barrios is one of the few voices of reason on the council you should apologize to him personally.
