Yearbook outrage continues

Covina.jpgSchool officials are considering reprinting a yearbook that contains a racial prank, Amanda Baumfeld reports. The update comes one day after Baumfeld reported that the yearbook at Charter Oak High School in Covina contains fake names under the Black Student Union photo - such as "Tay Tay Shaniqua," "Crisphy Nanos" and "Laquan White" - next to the club photo in the school's 2008 Chronicle, according to Superintendent Clint Harwick.

Baumfeld said that in one of the first calls she made, the school administrator said, "I don't see why the paper would be concerned about this."

I wonder if the administrator gets it now, considering today it is a national story.

I see no problems with giving ethnic names to people like that. Everyone needs to have a sense of humor.

If it had been white kids giving funny names to white kids or black kids giving funny names to black kids no one would care, they might even laugh about. But when it whites and blacks everybody has freak out and yell the sky is falling.

I for one am sick of it. People need to stop making every molehill into mount racism, its stupid and it helps NO ONE.

First of all, a prank of this magnitude is not a molehill. Secondly, it is not humorous. This prank was hurtful, and did not just target students of race. It effected many more, and EVERYONE should be absolutely disgusted by the actions of those guilty. It is a DISGRACE, and as a 2005 graduate of Charter Oak High School and sibling of one of those students whose picture and name were completely taken out of this 2008 year book, I'm not only appalled, but calling on all those in authority to not only reprint the books with all mistakes fixed, and at no additional cost to the students who were targeted, but to give an official and public apology to ALL the students who do not appear and/or whose names and/or pictures were messed with.

PS: Fuhrman and Duke. Grow up. People LIKE YOU need to learn the importance of tolerance, virtue, and SINCERITY.

This was a very cruel and thoughtless "prank." I hope the student who did it is reprimanded.

Rational Thinker said:

If it hadn't been a about race, the student or students who did it would be punished. The kids whose names were printed wrong could be given corrected yearbook version and everyone would be on their way.

But because its about race it won't stop until the headlines are over, till the marches are done, till Jesse Jackson leaves town and every white student is made to feel guilty for something most of them didn't have anything to do with. And when all that has happened many whites who wouldn't have resented blacks will learn to, because of being unfairly treated themselves.

Amnerica's obsession with race helps NO ONE.

What a stupid stunt. Where was the yearbook advisor? I can't believe this was pulled off without the advisor's knowledge. Talk about asleep on the job.....

Every school that has a yearbook that is published and sold to the senior class usually has a teacher who over sees the production from being to the end before it is sent to the publisher. What kind of school are they running? Where the heck was the principal or vice principal. Where is the school board in all this mess??? Someone in authority totally dropped the ball on this stupit, mean spirited prank. It was done in bad taste never the less. What an insult to the Senior Class of 2008. What a terrible way to end 4 years of high school. Most of all what a sad and nasty memory.
We try to instill good morales and values in our children no matter what. We are all a melting pot of many nations and cultures. What message is being sent out when something like this happens? We simply say that we approve of racial prejudice and racism. It doen't matter how you try to justify as to what was done and why. You can not undo the harm and suffering you have put these youngsters through. I can not believe some of the comments made by some of you. We will always be surrounded by bigets and racist no matter what. To all you students who went through this nonsense, my hats off to you. Learn from this as you continue through your own life. Grow from this and teach your children never to repeat the pain and horrows of nieve, hypocitical, stupit, ignorant people. Learn to rise above this and be a better person. I wish you all the best at Charter Oak High Class of 2008. You are our hope and future for a better tomorrow. Good luck and God Bless You All.

I'm not suggesting that the students who pulled this stunt should be drawn and quartered but I do think a strong message needs to be sent that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Maybe suspension.

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE. OUR YOUTH MUST KNOW THAT THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR IS UNEXCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. IT WILL SEND OUT THE WRONG MESSAGE TO OTHERS THAT DO PRANKS THAT ARE JUST NOT PERMITTED. ESPECIALLY DURING THESE TIMES. IT'S TIME TO PAY THE PIPPER, KIDS!

That's right. I could not agree more.

It is unfortunate that this prank has gotten to the level that it has.You as students thatwere affected must try to find a way to start the HEALING. You have the intellegence and will to make it happen. Those that did this Must be part of the HEALING. Together as students, stafff and the community you ALL can help to find a common ground and begin to address it, civicly and respectfully. Let's not add more fuel to the fire. Remember you will become part of the SOLUTION, not an on going PROBLEM. You all must stop this domino effect immediately, before it becomes any worse. The last domino must fall. But at what expense. You all can prevent this fron happening. Those students or student must apologixe and become part of the soulution, not the on going problem. I have total faith in you as intellegent, vibrat, articulet students. You are our FUTURE. I have total trust, hope and faith in you all. Please help by bringing your community togethrter. There is nothing that you can't resolve nor fix.You have thw power and the will. Remember "IT takes a Village (Community) to raise a child." Now you OUR BELOVED CHILDREN must help raise our Community.
We now need YOU! You hold the HOPE in your hands.

NATIONAL ATTENTION said:

It is truly sad this story has gotten national attention but I'm glad it was put out in the open.

George said:

Isn't it kinda ironic that the mom of one of the kids who got a stereotyped name actually has a stereotyped name herself?! And I wonder if she pronounces her name Toi as "Toy" or "Twah"?

Dear George said:

You're an idiot. Go to bed.

Retired Educator said:

It doesn't matter how she pronounces her name. It was one that was given to her by her parents. Many a time we are given names that are passed down by our beloved grandparents ot great grandparents. It is a honor or tradition to carry on the family name. No,it does not have to be a last name. Because we are from many nations and cultures we all have "unique" names. They are something we are proud of. They are to be respected. Not to be made fun of. That is where some people lack manners and education. These people need to be ignored. They are considered bigots, racist and idiots, all togeter. Ignor them. For they do not know any better. More than likey they were raised by someone who just didn't know any better. Too bad. They are to be considered,a "wart on the butt of society." No great loss to the human race. Really. Keep them in your prayers. "What is in a name. A rose by any other name is still a rose." Remember the sweet fragrance and the many beautiful colors they come in. Pleasing to the eye and nose. Expensive as heck. But well worth it.

Never mind throwing insults you cowards. They don't work with anyone one bit. Never the less, you who have written such mean comments are dealing with a guilt trip. You are the ones that make this world a terrible place to live in. It is too bad that you have some deep rooted emotional mental problems. Get some help as soon as possible. You desperately need it. You are threating someone you don't even know. How stupit are you? You sound like two bullies. The kind that tie cans to cats tails and pull the wings off of butterflies. You sound more like little snot nose punks. Get a life. You go Retired Educator. Thees two are all talk. They can't even spell or write a decent comment. They are more than likely, high shcool drop outs who still live with mommy and daddy. Just lost street thugs with nothing better to do. So,so sad and pathetic. I see that their parents failed.

I am sorry to read that some people are upset about what I said. You don't need to beat me up because I expressed my opinion. That is my Constitutional Right. "Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press." That pertains to me and you. Your threts concern me. There is no need whats so ever to have to want to do bodily harm to anyone. We can agree to disagree.
This will pass. I have faith that the students and staff will do what is right to correct this wrong. We will rise above this all and move on. Our school, Charter Oak High and our city of Covina will be alright. Hot heads will continue to be just that, hot heads, with hot tempers. Ignor them. But above all Pray for them, for they don't know any better.

it is racist to assume that the yearbook staffer who made up the names for the bsu filler is white. my mom always told me not to become the thing that you hate. acting racist because you feel someone else is doesn't solve any problem, it just creates another one.
i agree with the retired educator- i think that action will be taken to correct, as much as possible, the wrong. i also believe that the incident will not be forgotten nor should we forget it but we don't have to harp on it without end. we must make sure that it doesn't happen again.

Retired Educator said:

Liz you are a wise person. We must learn from this. Help find resolve. Never let it happen again. Come together as a school and community for the sake of those that will follow as graduates of Charter Oak High School. Trust and respect your names, nationalities and cultures. You will become great and wonderful worker, educators and leaders in our cities.
