In preparation for the budget meeting tonight, I just took a 20 minute scan at the docs. There are some interesting figures that jumped out, and some that I was looking for at the request of our readers. Here are some of the figures:

City Council
-Proposed payment to the five city council members in 2008-09 is $44,000, which breaks down to $8,800 a year or $733 a month per council person.
-Proposed car allowance is $21,000, which breaks down to $4,200 a year or $350 a month per council person.
-Estimated travel and conference costs is $30,000, which is up from $13,235 in 2006-07.
-The City Council also gets paid for its work on the Community Development Commission, at an additional $1,700 a year per council person.
-Estimated telephone allowance is $80 a month per council member, which costs the city $4,800 a year.
-Total proposed budget: $142,600

City Attorney
-Costs for salaries, including overtime, is proposed to cost $377,700.
-Proposed car allowance is $11,400
-Total proposed budget: $442,500

Police
-Costs for full-time salaries is expected to be $17 million, and for part-time it is proposed at $232,700.
-Overtime costs are projected to be $1.4 million. Last year (2007-08), the department projected that figure to be $2.1 million, and in 2006-07 the actual figure for overtime was $1.9 million.
-Total proposed budget for police: $21,327,700

I was there, you could hear a pin drop when the vote was passed. Now from what I saw about 2008 2009 budget the city will have no reserve fund at the end of 2009. All the Mayor talked about was old beds that people disguard on our streets. Then they voted to pass the budget. What Great City............

I agree with a taxpayer comment saying that our Mayor talked about old beds on the streets, he forgot again that this was a budget meeting and this is the kind of Mayor we had to put up last 20 years, no wonder people
want to replace him with the chimp "Moe" when they find him....

Mayor Gutierrez was out to lunch as usual. He talked about stupit stuff. He was not focused on the cities budget at all. Emily was out to La La Land too. What a pair of morons....She talked about the Blockbuster. Who cares. Their mainds were made up before thay even got there. What a total disapointmant. It was not a surprize to the people who attended. "You can't teach a dog new tricks!" Especially Ernie and Emily. The Moyoral Ernie the Pit Bull and Councilwoman Emily the Poodle. Woof, woof!

Well I see why they like being in office. "Money talks and the deficit walks...right out the door...just like last year." I would not give up my seat either. All I have to do is sit in a chair, mumble a few words, dooze off, pick my noose, mumble some more, sort once in a while, squeel like a pig, vote, mummble again and again. Call it a night...and pick up a big fat check...with benefits and a sweet retirement package. Sign me up. Psss I won't drink, curse, eat like a pig, drive drunk, wear clean underwear and be polite to the people at all times...even if they hate my guts. Promise.
