Gutierrez speaks out
It took nearly two months, but El Monte Mayor Ernie Gutierrez finally made a public statement about the allegations that he was at a city event drunk, groped his girlfriend and acted inappropriately. He denied ALL charges.
One of comments he made was that if Henry August, who is a former police officer that made these allegations, really believed that Gutierrez was drunk, why didn't he perform a field sobriety test?
"I was accused of being drunk by an ex-police officer. When an ex-police officer accuses you of being drunk, there should have been a field sobriety check. One was never given to me," Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez also said that he comes from a humble family, and of a family that served a combined 100 years in the military.
"I was born to parents who were illiterate, but they were ordinary people. Our parents taught us not to use vulgar language," Gutierrez said.
As for the dancing, Gutierrez explained that there was a dance, La Bala, that required him to grab the waist of his partner. And regarding anything that August heard, Gutierrez said that 90 percent of his conversations that night was in Spanish. And August doesn't speak Spanish.
The Mayor did apologize that his name was used in such a way that it was interrupting work with the city.
What a bunch of lies. I can't believe that Mayor Gutierrez would lie about what we all witnessed. It just goes to show what a bold face liar he is. He has no integrity what's so ever. When some one starts to believe their own lies then that is a serious cry for help. Gutierrez knows good and well what he did. When people are drunk like, Gutierrez, they don't remember a darn thing that they said and did. That "fits" Gutierrez to a tee. Theere were many people who speak and understand spanish at that event. They all know very well the vilgarities that Gutierrez was slashing out, while totally intoxicated, and his nasty dancing. As far as August doing a sobriety test, why would he have to? He was not on duty and is retired. Even Gutierrez knows that. August would not do such a thing, as a sobriety teat on the drunken mayor at such an event. That would of really caused a bigger incident. Yes Ernie, YOU keep on believing that YOU did not do any of the things that we ALL KNOW good and well YOU did. We will never believe, nor support such a liar and a drunk. NEVER! GET SOME PROFESSIONAL HELP!
Not only is the mayor a sleezy womanizing drunk....he lies. Ernie, an apology isn't enough....it is time to resign.
Like ElMonte Resident stated, why would a field sobriety test be conducted by an ex-police officer at an event? If the Mayor was intoxicated, it is not against the law unless he was attempting to drive or was creating a public nuisance. Simply because an ex police officer didn't conduct a field sobriety test does not prove that he was not drunk. That is faulty logic.
Isn't it equally faulty logic to declare someone"drunk" without any objective standard for defining what that means and without relying on any sort of objective method for determining whether or not someone even meets your definition of "durnk." There were lots of people drinking alcohol at that event because alcohol was allowed at the event. Does that mean everyone there who drank must have also been drunk? Or is it more like everyone who drank (who I don't like) was drunk but everyone who I am allied with was okay because that's just the way it goes.
So finaly our Mayor got the approval to speak up, but please make sense when you talk; Field Sobriety test is only done when driving a vehicle and assuming they give you a test and fail. to what station they would have take you if they run the campain and put the signs for you...
Yeah, I don't know what happened that night, nor do I have an opinion... but I have to call BS on Mr. Gutierrez's logic regarding a field sobriety test. Since Mr. August is retired, he had no right to give anyone a field sobriety test. Secondly, Mr. Gutierrez wasn't driving a vehicle or starting bar fights, so there really was no reason to give one. That kind of protesting makes me wonder what really happened that night.
Like I said Ms. Mclain, its 2 months to finally make a statement and look what he said,

Those that were at the May 3 event behaved. Not one person was out of hand nor drunk. It was Ernie "boracho" Gutierrez and his gal pal Gracelia who arried at the event, already plastered. They continued to drink tequilla and beer. (like it was going to run out....please!) We could see all the action from our tables. He did curse in spenish we understood it very well. It was slurred as usual, because he was intoxicated. He did grab Gracelia on the dance floor. It was "nasty looking" not like the song he mentioned at all. He was acting like a horny 16 year old. She like a common woman. We all saw and heard it. The plain truth is pretty bad. That is Gutierrez for you.

I agree with the previous person. Gutierrez should vacate as soon as possible I hope that the El Monte Police have taking notes on his unexceptable crude behavior. To turn on a ex police officer is wrong. Where does he get off. August was a fine dedicated officer in our city. His honesty stands alone. He dared to call a spade a spade. I stand behind this brave man. The EMPD better find someone else for mayor real soon. This town drunk will not do another 2 more years. He is a hasbeen. Plain and simple.

Finally the residents have witnessed for them selves how they both stick up for one another, speak on the same nonsence over and over, and have nothing positive to contribute to the cities present or future. They have no vision or high hopes for ElMonte at all. Two lost souls and two lost minds. New councilmembers must be elected this coming March 2009. Out with the old and absent minded and in with the new.

Many of us have lost loved ones. We all hurt. But to use it as an excuse to get stiken drunk is not exceptable. Especially for a mayor. If he can't cope with it get professional help. Better yet resign, since you can't controll your drinking or behavior. As far as a couple of drinks....they are well pass over a couple. More like one too many. It is just a cop out.
What is funny is that all of you who claim to have seen the mayor drunk have never come forward. It seems that if you really saw what you claim you saw you would be anxious to make yourself known so that the story could be backed-up. Oh ya. that's right, if you make yourself known bad things will happen to you ....RIIIIIIIIIGHT. So far I still see Cosme Jimenez and Francisco Magdaleno at all the meetings - I guess the secret hit squad has not gotten to them yet.

After reading the investigative report on Ernie Gutierrez it is plain to see that the mayor was not telling the truth. His use of vulgar language in spanish is exactly how he talks. I have been around him enough to hear him talk that way. He expresses himself in that same manner. drunk or not. The fact that he brought his girlfriend, Gracelia to the event was shocking. It showed disrespect to Olga his caring, loving and devoted wife. We were upset that he would flont this woman around town, especially at such an important city function. He was drunk when he arrived at the event. It showed in his staggering walk and his slurred way of talking. To think that he would even believe his own lies is a sign of mental trouble. This has defineatly impacted his decision making as the mayor of El Monte. Totally unstable and unreasonable.

We are having a meeting at City Hall tomorrow tuesday at 5:30 p.m. it is going to be related to new sales tax addition of 1/2 to 3/4% and if approved will go to the ballot next november. They claim it will bring in 4 million dollars a year in revenues and the big question is do you trust our so called leaders that they will spend this money wisely and not give it away in more raises or fat pensions?
You can never trust Mayor Gutierrez, Gomez, Ishigaki or Barrios. They will surely spend the money as soon as it becomes avaliable. They are "not" smart at all when it comes to saving money or putting it away for a rainy day. They love to live high on the hog. Hard habits are not easy to break. They have proven that year after year. Deficit after yearly deficit.Why should they stop now. They are out of control.
A new mayor and city council must be elected. These poor fools do not have a clue as to how serious this problem has become, year after year, budget after budget. They will creat a new deficit for 2009-2010. You can bank your bottom dollar on that.

The city keeps having budget problems and the city treasurer NEVER answers the public nor does he have the integrity or face to do so. What a coward! Everyone seems to be forgetting that City Council is there part-time. What is the City Manager and the city staff doing? City Council is just a distraction! It would be an asset to remove these old folks that have only done things in the benefit of their selves and friends & special interest. I would suggest to form a committee but they are also social & special interest groups that only work to promote their selves.

The truth of the matter is that Gutierrez, Barrios, Gomez and Ishigaki must not return to office at all. I think every one of them has had to make unpopular decisions lately. It is not an easy thing for anyone to do. I think those people who are concerned about the city's spending habits are right to be concerned about the city's spending habits. Here's what you can do: rather than leave Wallach all by herself to oppose bad spending ideas why don't you also show up at a meeting and support her positoin. You might find out that you have more power than you think.

It is sad when you have a loved ones dependent on drugs and to make matters worst to watch him die of aids. The real issue should be one mayor who has lost touch with his city. Gutierrez has serious issues in his head. His drinking has caused him to lose sight of why he is mayor. He failed as a father, husband and now politician. Drinking can do that. It is time to elect a new mayor. None of the current city council will do. They bring the same mentality and a way of doing the same mistakes as Ernie. We need a totally new, young, educated person as our next Mayor of EM. Where were the rest of our so called concerned city council for the town meeting? See how much they don't care. So much for being there for us, the residents of El Monte.
It's even more sad when you ignore a bigger story that actually impacts peoples lives like Gregg Industries just to score a few cheap political shots. Make you seem very small and very irrelevant for the people.
We need new faces, but when you talk about "young, educated person", be careful. Take a look at the El Monte Coalition of Latino Professionals. Most of "J" Gomez's appointees are coming from that group. That is where the police go to find their new candidates. They have the same mentality of the current council.
In response to getting new and talented young educated persons Norma Macias ran last time and got $10,000.00 donation from the police union, that will tell you if she will become another puppet..Also Ernie and Emily got the same amount and we the taxpayers have to pay that money in the form of a big 24% over 3 years that they received after last election and they had to give it to them when you get that kind of donation...Also keep an eye on the puppet farm "the local school board from the Elementary group" Emily graduated from there..
It is great to see that by pushing certain topics of discussion, new revelations appear on the blog. I do so appreciate such actual information. What has Norma Macias done that you think makes her a bad prospect for Council - other than (according to you) being associated with police department? I hate to say it but all of the people who run for office in El Monte are sort of the same. I don't know why you all hate each other since you don't seem to have any great differences when it comes to city stuff. True, each has their own particular set of cronies, benefactors and hangers-on who expect favors but if that's the only difference then Pa-leeeeeeze. That's just the teapot calling the kettle black. I have been retired from the Dept. for many years now and i know all the people in question here... First and foremost Hank August is an honorable man, known for his honesty, in fact thats why you will find things in his file for behavior, his honesty in questioning the BRASS caused a bit of a witch hunt against him as i recall. the overall outcome never finding anything seriously wrong doing. Hank saved my life in the early 80's and i will never forget that, you call yourself a Man in Blue. Did you forget our code of honor or did you never have it. I know all the people who are still with the department and who would have worked with Hank, I promise you all i have spoken to my fellow brothers and we all agree a threat on August's reputation will insure some major changes in the departments leaderships reputation starting at the top. Don't bite the hands that protect you.

Overnight parking ordinance coming back to city council next tuesday 19 at 6:30 p.m. for the 3rd. time and been sent by Chief of police Weldon claiming that he needs more police officers and also the 1/2% tax coming in november elections..Chief remember not everybody in town is making $200,000.00 a year like you and also will have to continue paying you the same amount when you retire in December thanks to the gratitude of the 4 council members Ernie, Emily, Gomez and barrios.

It was about time that someone stood up to that loser of a sorry excuse of a husband and mayor. Just because Ernie has the blessing of the El Monte PD doesn't give him the right to get away with all the crap that he does. It needed to come out in the open. Residents must be made aware of the inapropriate manner that Gutierrez conducts himself while performing his duty as the mayor of El Monte. He needs to be replaced with someone else. I'll even vote for Ronald Mc Donald as Mayor. The worst be could do is have one too many shakes!!!
Isn't that what elections are for? You seem intent on waging a perpetual election. Unfortunately, instead of being issue driven it's personality driven. You know what? It doesn't matter who is the mayor because the may is just another vote on the city council. in fact, the may is really just a city council person who has a shorter term. So this notion that somehow being mayor gives you some great reign of power is really just a crock. I wish you bloggers would talk in serious terms about what sort of budget priorities you would set for the City? what kind of development you will encorage? how you will preserve jobs? But I know you won't because that would require REAL LEADERSHIP and REAL POLITICAL COURAGE. You politicians and lackies who support them are all the same. You try to con people into believing that everything will be magically solved by switching who sits in the council seats. Your really are just all the same which is probably why you all can't stand each other.
There is an old saying that says "You get what you deserve" and in this City it works that way..How many of the whiners are going to the meeting next tuesday and give your comments about overnite parking, remember this is your city and the Council and chief of police are there to Serve you not the other way around...Raises were given left and right last december to the police department including the Chief Weldon and also Dept. Heads when they knew we already had a budget problem and now they are trying to cover the holes the easy way "Raise fees or Taxes"...We have a few Retired employees making over $150,000.00 and the Chief is next with $200,000.00 a year retirement I guess they found the Paradise in El Monte thanks to the people that believe in them so please be carefull when you vote next time..
There is no power in being a mayor of any city, that is true. One seat one vote. However ElMonte is a total different animal. Gutierrez is given full power of what he wants and what he gets away with. How do you think he got the city to do his girlfriends, Gracelia's driveway for free. You the taxpayer of El Monte paid for it. He has also had other improvements done for other friends and family, as well as his supporters. That is abuse of power by an electeed official, but it is still power, either way you look at it. Thanks to the other three do-nothings they allow it and go right along with it. They must please Ernie in order to servive the kick in the rear from the El Monte Police rank and file.
True leadership does not exist on the El Monte city council. Not one person can take control and make sure that the budget is passed, with a healthy reserve, help save jobs, say "NO" to new taxes, say "NO" to raises by the EM PD, and be that leader that should embrace the mayorship. You got a bunch of un-eduacated foooools sitting on the city council and a dim-witted, alcoholic mayor. You also have a city manager and city attorney who can't think outside the box and are big brown nosers of the mayor and the EM PD. You are in a no win situation in good ole El Monte.
I agree with you 100%. Our city council and mayor are big zeros. We desperately need a change of government at city hall. Wallach tries, but she is only one vote. The other four would not allow her to take her turn as the vice mayor. It was her turn. How is that for integrity, Jay, Emily, and Art. You three can't do the right thing if your life depened on it. We all can see and hear it for ourselves thanks to cable. We really see how un-prepared and dumb you all are. Aren't you embarresed as to how stupit you four look. Watch it for yourselves. These tapes should be shown to new councilmembers as to, "How not to act or run a city council meeting." You are a sorry excuse for community leaders of El Monte.
I say we pull all four out of office. They are bad for our city. They look good on paper (their mailers). They make campaign promises (which they never keep). They show up to every cat and dog show in town, (come election time)and then once elected, they all disapear from the planet. What kind of bs is that?
City Council have $40,000.00 allocated for Conferences this year and I think all 4 members can save us that money just by going to Monrovia or Baldwin Park, so they can show them how to be true leaders and stop receiving orders from the Police Dept..

Last Tueaday night Council meeting The Overnite Parking came back for discussion again and seems that they want to pass it this time, so be ready to express your opinion next meeting September 2nd..Tickets will be given if your car is found parked on the streets from 2:00 to 5:00 A.M. if we the People agree or disagree with this item, you are intitled to give your opinion because politicians only know how to collect your money, but they do not know when to stop spending it...Also 1/2% sales Tax Extra coming in november for you to decide when you vote..What's next Council members?

EL MONTE - Ernie Gutierrez, the mayor of El Monte, was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of domestic violence and detained for most of the day, police said.
