It's been a tough few months for many of our cities in the San Gabriel Valley. And judging from the comments on the blog, many are upset at what their cities are doing -- and consequentially what this blog and newspaper reports on.

Most cities are dealing with budget cuts, some are dealing with embarassment by their elected representatives and several have or are facing lawsuits that have rocked city morale. But we may as well take one day to try to muster up some positive feedback about our cities and elected officials.

So, here's an open forum: What have your elected officials done to improve your city?

I think the community center you talked about in Alhambra is a good thing.

Green building design policies are a great idea. they save energy for the person or business that owns the building and the reduce the need for other engery sources. Cities have be trying to address this but unfortunately this is overshadowed by the current economic climate. It hard to do ambitious things like that when everyone is hurting for money.

MTA said:

Although I am not happy with MTA's progress, I am glad that cities are trying to be heard on transportation issues. It might not seem like it at first glance but transportation does affect our pocket book: how much we drive; how much government has to spend to clean the environment etc. We should try to talk more about this.

Happy Birthday USA!!! We have our problems but this is still the greatest country in the world!!!

El Monte Resident said:

I agree. I'm glad the cities in the valley are coming together and demanding something for their tax dollars.

El Monte Resident said:

I agree with MTA. I'm so glad the cities in the valley are coming together and demanding consideration from the MTA. We have been ignored long enough.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA said:

I agree. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA. For all our differences, at least we are free to express them and debate them. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Temple City Resident said:

Yes, Happy birthday to the US of A. The greatest freest country in the land.

Baldwin Park Resident said:

I am happy that my city council is trying to revitalize downtown. I know there are people who see it differently, but I think they are doing a good job.

South El Monte Resident said:

It is great to see our mayor and council working together. Within the last five years our city has grown into a thriving community. New homes and major projects are popping up. Our city is showing much postive growth and progress. We are very pleased.

Great job our South El Monte mayor and city council did with 4 of July. Great to see so many families enjoying themselves at this annual event.

We are looking forward to more positive growth and progess.

Great job South El Monte!

South El Monte Resident said:

Our streets, sidewalks, and wheel chair accessability cement ramps, have been renovated through out South El Monte. Our city is looking wat better than it has ever been. We thank our Mayor and City Council. They have shown that they really care for us in South El Monte.

Kudos to the elected representatives of our San Gabriel Valley cities that value the benefits of working together as a region. Although each town is independent, and each has its own characteristics, it is the regional minded mayors and councilmembers that puts the San Gabriel Valley on the map. Including Mayor Gutierrez that under his leadership at the Alemeda Corridor East project garnered millions of federal dollars towards the constuction of more underpasses at railroads. Now that is leadership.

KEEP TALKIN' TRANSIT said:

transportation, transportation, transportation. We need more of it and I hope all this MTA talk isn't the last we hear of it. Think about, with the price of gas skyrocketing many low income folks can't really aford to drive long distances for work. An efficient public transit network that actually goes to where people work would help this. The construction effort involved with building this type of vital infrastructure will also put people to work at a time when jobs are very scarce.

South El Monte Senior said:

Thanks to Mayor Figueroa our saturday senior lunch program is open for business. She was the brain child on this one. We have a nice cool senior center that provides a healthy lunch. It will be open for 12 more hot saturdays. Especially with this terribly hot crazy weather, we look forward to seeing her and keeping cool.

Anonymous said:

senior lunch program rocks.

Anonymous said:

i would have to agree. it does

SEM Resident said:

Our Mayor Figueroa rocks. She is always involved in our city events and with us. She is a genuine, smart woman and a true leader as the mayor.

EM RESIDENT said:

We too have a wonderful City Councilwoman named Pat Wallach. She is very kind and looks after us in El Monte. When we call on her for help, she makes sure it gets done. She has made our city a good place to be in.

Resident said:

Even better is Art Barrios. He really puts the priorities of the city first. He doesn't grand stand or give self-promoting speeches like others on the council. I sure hope he runs for mayor.

Anonymous said:

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I also agree with the previous poster. this guy really takes care of business better than all the rest. The two women on the council seem like a pair of wingnuts who are more interested in playing politics than in working to solve the cities problems. Barrios for Mayor.

anonymous em said:

Barrios is very rude to the speakers. He would never do as mayor. He is a bow hard. Look at the July i council meeting. That is not a sign of a leader. Certainly not a mayor. He thinks he is great. bs

Resident said:

Whether council member or mayor....they still get one vote. I like Art having a seat that only comes up for election every four years. He is not a "yes man" for the EMPD. It would be hard to run for office every two years without their support.

Puzzled said:

No anonymous. Are you absolutely positively sure we are talking about the same person. Art is anything but rude. He asks tough questions and knows how to lead but "rude"?!?!?! You either do not know or you are someone who feels very personally threatened that alot of other people like him. You should be ashamed.

Rosemead Resident said:

In the city of Rosemead we are happy to have Margaret Clark as a Councilwoman. He has always been there for the people. She is smart and knows the cities issues. She acts on them and we apprecaite that about her.

Rosy Rosemead said:

Margaret is a sweet heart

Rosemead Resident said:

We are fortunate to have Councilwoman Margaret Clak in Rosemead. She is smart as well as wise. She takes care of business at city hall and the residents of our city.

El Monte Watcher said:

Again, watch the on line web site of July 1st council meeting. See and hear for yourself. WE ALL WITNESSED IT. The video does not lie like you do. You fool. Art Barrios is rude and arrogant. He does not know how to treat the public with respect all all. What a joke.

El Monte said:

I agree. Mr. Barrios was very rude to the gal from the cellular phone "fake tree" reception poles. He needs to treat people with respect. Is there no decorum for him as well? He is total different man at the council meetings. He even barked at Gutierrez for not reading his agenda on this matter.

Anonymous said:

yes, because somewhere out there the is a poor little cell phone company stooge who wanted oh so badly to build an ungly cell phone tower who is now crying herself to sleep. Are you for real. Why are you so threatened by Art Barrios?

Anonymous said:

Give me a break. No one in their right mind would be remotely threatended by Art. He is such a pussy cat. He has no bite and very lttle bark. What a cutie pie.

La Puente Resident said:

The city of La Puente is doing ok with Mayor Louie Lujan and Councilwoman Lola Storing on the city council. I enjoy talking with the Councilwoman. She is very polite, good natured and a hard worker.
Mr. Lujan has done much to help our city to grow. We like them both. They make a big difference in our city.

A Duarte Resident said:

In Duarte we are blessed with Councilwoman Lois Gaston. She has made a positive change on the city council and in our little city. She is intellegent and a great advocte for children and the entire community.

Anonymous said:

Yes I agree Art is a real gentleman

Anonymous said:

Lois Gaston is a pretty nitce person.

South El Monte Resident said:

Congresswoman Hilda Solis has done so much for our cities. She works hard to help on veterans issues, clean water and air, battered and abused women, and many other important concerns and issues that pertain to all her cities. She has got to be one of the smartest, resourceful and dedicated legislators that has risen from the San Gabriel Valley. We are so grateful to have her serve as our Congresswoman.

HILDA IS GREAT said:

YES, Hildo Solis is a real gem of a human being. She is someone we can all be proud of.

So. El Monte Resident said:

Gloria Molina, our Supervisor has proven to be the most dynamic, intellegent, vocal person on the board of County Supervisors. She has done so much for all the cities that she represents. What a unbelieveable, fantastic person. We are grateful and blessed to have here, representing us all.

The city of West Covina is purchasing "green" vehicles. That's a good idea.

Mrs.Garcia So. El Monte Senior said:

The city of So. El Monte will have it's first senior rental apartments. We are so happy to finally have a very nice place to live at. It will be three floors. The first will have all kinds of stores just for seniors and a drug store. The second and third floors will have 1 to 2 bedrooms with nice floors, and a elevator. Yippe. We will also have a big party and meeting room. I can't wait to move in. Thank you Mayor Figuero and city council. You guys are the best ever.
