Well this should make voter registration for Californians a little easier...
The Assembly Elections and Redistricting committee this week voted 7-0 to approve state Sen. Ron Calderon's SB 381 to permit Internet voter registration for Californians.
"Online voter registration will encourage new voters to participate, especially young voters and those serving in the military overseas," said Calderon, D-Montebello.
"Arizona has made this available since 2002 where it has proved to be convenient, secure, and instantaneous for voters and a money saver for government."
Currently, all voter registration in California ultimately utilizes a paper affidavit.
Voters can partially complete a registration form online but a hard copy must still be printed out or mailed to them so they can provide a signature. Once the signature is affixed, the paper form must then be forwarded to the appropriate county elections official or secretary of state.
The bill will permit most eligible persons to register to vote over the Internet utilizing digitized signatures on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Accessing the DMV signatures makes it possible to complete the entire voter registration process over the Internet.
So here's a question: Do you think online voter registration will increase voter turnout?

I think turn out at the next election will be high but not because of online registration (which, don't get me wrong), I believe is a good thing. At the end of the day, however, it requires people to actually GET OFF THEIR BUTTS and go the polls or at the very least turn in their absentee ballot (which I encourage wholeheartedly). We can get millions of people to vote for American Idols, the Bachelor or Dancing with the Stars, but no one has time to vote. The Founding Fathers must be rolling in their graves.
I am not sure if this would be vulnerable to hacking but it would be nice if you could cast your vote online. Short of that how about having voting over the course of a week. I mean really people; ONE stinking week out of the whole year so that everyone can find some time to vote.
Why aren't we thinking of making election day a national holiday like most of the other industrialized nations of the world?
That is a terrific idea. I do not know why this had not be suggested more.
Thanks for your idea Anon. Yes, that would also be an improvment and might even be very inexepnsive in the end. Why not make election day on a Saturday for that matter.
it is sad that most people don't vote

Two things about this blog's comments continue to annoy me. One is the obvious addition of some posters to CAPITAL LETTERS. The other is people who keep clicking on "Submit" over and over and over and over and over and over.
Making election day a holiday is only going to mean more three day weekends. It would probably lead to lower voter turnout.
happy now?
