COVINA - Senator Gloria Romero wants Charter Oak High School to immediately correct racially offensive names of Black Student Union members in its yearbook and calls the incident "blatant racism."
The senator said she reached out to the school district upon hearing the news of a student yearbook staffer replacing BSU student names with fake names such as "Tay Tay Shaniqua," "Crisphy Nanos" and "Laquan White" next to their club photo.
"This is an outrage," Romero said Tuesday. "This is the manifestation of racism in the San Gabriel Vally. We need to correct this and ensure that it never happens again."
Romero requested the school district come together with the community and various civil rights groups to discuss the incident.
School Principal Kathy Wiard said there is no racial tension on the school's campus.
School officials have plans to meet with BSU students and their families in an attempt to come up with solutions to the error, according Wiard.

Tell Gloria Romero to mind her own business. We don't need her interference in our community.
I appreciate Ms. Romero's attention and concern with regards to this issue.
It has become a grave concern to all involed in Covina. It is good that Senator Romero wishes to help out. She means well. Oviously the School Staff at Charter Oak han no idea of what took place. The fact that it was even published as a year book should of not happened. Hopefully she can help find a common ground. I wish her well.
I am happy to see Senator Romero finally pay some attention to us. Too bad its this kind.
I have no problem with Romero putting in her two cents. why not?
Busted School Board Member Sergio Corina (Shirtless and sweaty guy) and Mayor Manny Lozano of Baldwin Park have a GAY FLING Going on!

I am very glad Senator Romero is stepping up and speaking out. There are obviously some racial issues going on that need to be addressed within the school district. I think maybe they need some racial sensitivity training for students and staff. The district needs to be more proactive about speaking against this and insuring that it will never happen again.
All this is going to teach our kids is that if you complain loud enough, sometimes, you get your way.
Or it could teach them that you will be held accountable for your hurtful actions.
Yeah. Who's being held accountable? Who's going to pay for this little witch hunt? Not the advisor and not the yearbook staff.
Boo, hoo. If the worse thing anyone ever calls you is Tay Tay Shaniqua, you should count yourself lucky and get on with your life.
Wow, with comments like those, no wonder our kids feel it's okay to pull such a hurtful racist "prank". The apple never falls far from the tree.

SGV is right you seem like a real ass. I do not know what ethnicity you are but if you were white would you want someone giving you Redneck name; if you were asian would you want to be called "chun king"; if you are hispanic would you want to be called "beaner." I don't think you would.
i support gloria romero's efforts to weigh in on this.
All the community must try to find a common ground. You all must be part of the solution. Not the on going problem. Help get our youth back on the right path. Some made a stupit mistake and must be punished. If not this will send a clear message to other youth, that it is ok to be a bigot and racist. We can't let this happen. Redirect them to the right path of hope and trust and respect for one another.
THANK YOU MS. ROMERO FOR HELPING OUT AND SPEAKING OUT.
