Soccer fields in West Covina

soccer fields.jpgIt's hard to believe, but the West Covina Soccer League has nearly 2,000 participants, but not one bonafide soccer field. Instead, players use school fields.

But if the City Council approves an amendment to the Orangewood Park Masterplan, there could be finally be soccer fields in the city.

Such a move isn't cheap: It could cost about $4 million. However, planning and community services commissions vowed to find funding for the project, including fundraising and grants.

Specifically, the plan calls for a large soccer field allowing for one game to be played by older youth teams or two games by younger youth teams; a small soccer field for practices and for games for younger youth teams, lighting, central rubberized playground area with benches, seating and viewing area, picnic areas with grills, a walking path, ball control netting, shade canopies.

The City Council will vote on it on Aug. 19.
