    Hell no!

  • Tax Payer

Absolutely not. That didn’t stop the city of El Monte to attend a luxurious resort vacation in Rancho Bernardo. That goes to show how little they care about the people and city that they represent. Their trips and pleasure come first as always.

  • Resident of Pico

Tax payers money should be spent on the needs of a city NOT MEXICO or any other country. I am sre that ,that money could of been used to help fund a non-profit group of a childrens or senior program. Elected officials need to think smarter and wiser. THEY SHOULD KNOW BETTER! Keep the money in Pico….please.

Recognizing that this blog the legions of posters who sumbit comments only anyalze issues in terms of simplistic absolutes(e.g., “Hell Yes” and “Hell No” etc), I will stick my neck out and say that whether or not a city official goes to a conference depends on the purpose of the conference and the cost of accomodations. PEOPLE!!!! There are a number of conferences you WANT your officials to go to. They provide valuable information on issues of regional and community concern and in some instances can provide valuable networking opportunities for bringing investment to cities. YES, I know aaaalllll you can point to at least one or two instances where you are convinced that some official just went on a conference to enjoy a taxpayer paid vacation. Of course that is wrong, but that does not translate into a justifiable reason to impsoe a blanket prohibition on all conference attendance. By law, those who go to conferences at city expense are required to report on what they gained from the conference and how that served the interests of the city; this is perfect. Also, conferences can be scrutizined ahead of time to determine their importance to your city. Finally, cities can adopt policies that require attendees to find the least expensive accomodations at the conference. There are REASONABLE ways of addressing this issue. Adopting the same old USELESS “Let’s stick to the bureacrats and politicians” rhetoric accomplishes nothing. There I’ve spoken my peace….Let the simplistic, anti-government responses begin……………..

gosh…I am not sure I am worthy to respond to such a well thought out, analytical and complicated response….being the simplistic, anti-government person that I am.

I found it interesting that you fail to identify a particular example of where a “conference” is worth attending….oh sure, you talk about those that provide “valuable information” or provide “valuable networking oppotunities”, but give me something I can sink my teeth into… a real example of a worthy conference that meets these standards.

    Anonymous,
I am suspicious of your real identity, perhaps you are a politician? When the residents have to put off vacations and cut their spending to bare bones to get by, the cities should do likewise. When we have our Councilmembers going to conference after conference and our cities getting farther and farther in debt, perhaps the conferences are not doing the citizens much good. Spend our money on the entire city , not just on the 5 on the council.

WC Resident: You obviously did not read or even attempt to comprehend anything I said. It’s this kind cursory thought that does more damage to effective government than anything else. In answer to your thinly veiled ad homenim response to my proposition: NO, I am not a politician. One more time from the top since you obviously didn’t get anything I said:

    1. I am not advocating a blind blank check authorization for officials to go to “conference after conference.” I propose that cities think strategically and send officials to those conferences where a benefit for your city might be derived.

    2. Sending officials to selected conference is not going to put any city into debt. Unchecked spending on saleries will as well spending on non-essential “feel good” projects.

    3. Conferences are important means to keep cities informed and connected. Rather than adopting a dumbed-down “let’s ban everything” policy, make sure that coucnil memembers report on what they did and paid for the cheapest accomodations when they are asked to stay overnight.

I know times are tough. We all are hit by this economy. Silly appeals to “stick it” to this person or “stick it” to that official solve nothing.

Rancho Bernardo is a hack conference.

the ICSC conference CAN be useful.

There are various conferences on new ideas of urban planning, that offer ideas on public safety, and other such things.

The partners for smart growth conferences, from the website, seem valuable.

  • Elected Official Guest

Rancho Bernardo is a great get away vacation. I attened one such conference. All we did was drink, eat, party, sleep, golf and get room service. We went on expensive dinners with developers and partied the night away. It is the best deal in town for Independent Cities Elected Officials. We had a total blast. Can’t wait for the next one.

Of course officials should reduce travel in tough times. The problem as I see it is that you, the Trib, believe any travel by public officials no matter what the economy is doing is a waste of taxpayer money. Some is excessive, but look at the school districts. Case in point: why do they keep allowing some Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Board Members to travel to Taiwan/China and the Far East yearly. They should pay for their own vacations if they want to see family?

  • H H Parents

Why would they even go to China? What are they going to bring back from China that will benefit our school system? We all know that education is top priority in China. Our gang bangers, taggers and lazy kids can lear from them. Our education is the best, but our children have their heads else where. Show us how to keep our kids interested in education and in helping themselves to move forward in life. Make yoyr travel worth our sending you to China or where ever you may go.
