605/10 intersection finally to measure up
Caltrans workers with clipboards and tape measures were lurking around the 605/10 freeway interchange Thursday morning. The wacky interchange, which some civil engineers call the autotopia, requires cars to slow down and switch places in a matter of a few-hundred feet.
Freeways near the intersection are constantly clogged. The intersection is scheduled to be completely overhauled. Caltrans started an environmental review on the $66 million project last year, but construction is not supposed to start until 2011, according to information on the Caltrans site. Baldwin Park Mayor Manny Lozano and West Covina Councilman Steve Herfert have been trying to round up support for this project since 2006.
With the economy shedding jobs, I wonder if there will be an effort by politicians to speed up infrastructure projects.
here's a Caltrans link that shows the area's scheduled projects.

Thanks to Assemblymember Hernandez, he was a major force in bringing in the money to the 10/605 Freeway. And I remeber Lozano and Herfert always campaigning for it in 2006. Good job guys! Three very impressive politicans! Unlike other state elected officals who only care about moving to higher positions.

it would be great to get this problem fixed once and for all. There is way to much traffic. Especially during the rush hours. We do need to have asap.
Hold on SGV Resident, not so fast!
First, I think this project is dependent upon state SHOPP funding, which is not the most reliable source of monies for projects. Further, if one reads the actual Caltrans website discussing the project (the link provided above by the Trib), it states that funding has "been identified but not approved."
So, I think I'll hold my applause until the actual 10/605 project is completely done, rather than run around handing out attaboys to our local pols just because some Caltrans staff were seen in the vicinity of the interchange.
