Romero drops out of race for Solis' seat

| | Comments (20) |

Looks like Gloria Romero won't be running after all for Hilda Solis' soon-to-be vacated seat in Congress.

She just dropped out of the running, according to Capitol Alert.

That leaves Judy Chu as a heavy contender, considering the backing she's recently received from local pols, like Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, D-West Covina.

Romero is officially out..I have been hearing that Ed Chavez may jump in. His old assembly seat represents about 60% of Solis' district. We will see.

If Chu wins, the Gov appoints her successor.

Romero is having a meeting with various elected officials. Cedillo and
Molina are supporting her. Now we read this blog. Are you sure you got of right?
Check out your information. I am confused.

SGV Insider said:

Yes, they are sure. Read Capitol Alert, LA Times' LA Now blog, even Cedillo's own freakin PRESS RELEASE has him declaring his candidacy and touting Romero's endorsement.

Bottom line is, Romero tested the waters, saw lots of SGV, Latino politicos and Labor lining up behind Chu, and decided she would rather avoid the bloody and potentially losing battle and concentrate instead on her initial target, Jack O'Connell's schools superintendent spot.

The real question is, who do you think will represent us best? Some LA-centric politician (read: carpetbagger) who will likely not stand in the way of the constant flow of SGV transportation moneys west, or a respected politician who has represented San Gabriel Valley cities for more than two decades, who lives in the district and knows it's needs intimately?

I think its a no brainer for Chu.

Romero saw the writing on the wall. Once Ed Hernandez dropped out it was clear Chu was in the drivers seat. Hernandez will run for Romero's seat next year and then his seat will be up for grabs. Anyone but Roger Hernandez, please.

Judy Chu is the logical choice. Gil Cedillo does not know a thing about the cities of the San Gabriel Valley. Why did he pop up?

Witness said:

Anonymous,

As the State Senator from the SGV whose current Senate district represents the areas of Alhambra, San Marino, South Pasadena, as well as a large portion of Los Angeles....Senator Cedillo understands quite well the issues important to voters in the SGV.

We would be very fortunate to have a qualified, proven leader like Gil Cedillo represent our district in Washington D.C.

Congratulations to Hilda Solis! Now the Senate will be up for grabs and the State Assembly. Good luck to Ed Hernandez for Senate, assuming he will run. For State Assembly, ANYONE but Roger Hernandez. Please, this guy is an embarrassment to our city and elected office.

Witness,
Name three things cedillo has accomplished on behalf of the voters in the last 10 years.

SGV Insider said:

Witness sounds like a Cedillo campaign staffer to me. He/she posted the exact same message on the other post on this blog related to the 32nd.

Anonymous,

You asked for three; however, because I have the time, I will provide you with six:

1) Senate Bill 1126 by Senator Gilbert Cedillo, makes it easier to hold gang members personally liable for harm to the community caused by their gang. This legislation strengthens our statewide anti-gang efforts by giving prosecutors more tools to fight gang activity at the local level.

2) Senate Bill 271 by State Senator Gilbert Cedillo, allows prosecuting district attorneys to pursue in court a gang’s illegally obtained assets. Monies recovered would be returned to the communities damaged by the gang.

3) Senate Bill 614 by State Senator Gilbert Cedillo, provides us with more enforcement tools to curtail the use of abusive tax shelters. Among other enforcement provisions, the new law greatly increases penalties for investing in illegal tax shelters.

4) Senate Bill 1271 by State Senator Gilbert Cedillo, provides firefighters with a presumption that a diagnosis of cancer was caused in the line of duty.

5) Assembly Bill 268 by Assemblyman Gilbert Cedillo, Recognizes the valuable contributions Chinese Americans have made to the history of Los Angeles, Assemblyman Gilbert Cedillo authored the bill that provided the Chinese American Museum $500,000 to assist in establishing a permanent location for the Museum.

6) Assembly Bill 1978 by Assemblyman Gilbert Cedillo established the CVCB program to honor Filipino veterans who risked their lives and suffered injuries while fighting side-by-side with U.S. soldiers in World War II.

These bills are only a snapshot the type of legislation Senator Cedillo has sponsored as a member of the State Senate and the Assembly.

I urge you to speak to union members, nurses, doctors, police officers and firefighters and ask them about legislation Senator Cedillo has championed in their favor.

I stand by my earlier comment.... "We would be very fortunate to have a qualified, proven leader like Gil Cedillo represent our district in Washington D.C."

SGV Insider,

Trust me...I am not a staffer. Just a concerned voter who follows the political scene both locally and nationally. All I want is the best representation for the 32nd district in D.C.

Only the first two examples seem like actual productive and progressive legislation. The last two seem like vote pandering, and the firefighter one seems like a firefighter union hack bill.

The tax shelter legislation, from your description, seems to vague.

Pretty thin record for a career politician.

How goes his drivers license for illegal aliens campaign?

Witness said:

Anonymous,

I urge you to do your research and find out how many bills Cedillo has actually passed as a California State Legislator. I believe it is more than six.

Drivers license's for illegal immigrants already working and driving in the State of California has not been popular and has been vetoed numerous times.

Personally, I do not agree with the language in the bill; however, as an educated voter, I know better than to "throw the baby out with the bath water". You will never agree with somebody 100% of the time.

My goal was not to argue and debate you. I was only answering your simple question.

It is obvious that you are not a big fan; however, by the tone of your language you sound awfully worried have having him in the race.

Witness,

I'm sure that he has been a part of numerous bills. My point is that he's a career politician who has done little, if anything, of import with his time in Sacramento.

I'm not "worried" about having him in the race. I'm just tired of these career politicians (and Cedillo is not the only one, one could argue Romero is just as bad) who have nothing to show for their time as electeds (except for a public pension), and how they've circumvented the term limits statute by jumping from position to position.

Now, one bill Gil has a chance for a seat without term limits, and he's chomping at the bit for a chance to jump at it--without any regard for actually doing a good job.

Anonymous,

Of the names being tossed around as candidates for the 32nd district, who (with a serious chance at winning) is not a "career" politician?

If your logic of determining a career politician is somebody who has held public office for 10 years...Then Senator Cedillo is a "career politician".

Utilizing your same logic, Judy Chu with 7 years in public office is also a career politician...or is 10 the magic number?

On January 9th you said "Judy Chu is the logical choice".

If you are being honest with yourself, and the 32nd does not need or want a "career" politician, it sounds like the kid from El Sereno should be your guy.

I had a longer reply, but for some reason there was an error in posting. Here's the gist:

1) I'm not the same anon that said "judy chu is the logical choice."

2) Judy Chu held a job for 13 years that wasn't politically related (professor).

3) You're right, I like the kid from El Sereno more for this position, but admittedly the talent pool is extremely thin.

4) As recently as December 4, Gil was eyeing Becerra's congressional seat, which demonstrates to me it's about the office, not about the service. How can you consider running for two different congressional district seats? That has the stench of career politician.

Anonymous,

I personally believe you are missing the big picture; however, I'll respect your opinion.

Witness,

Thanks for the cordiality. But please, don't end the conversation there.

What, in your opinion, is the "big picture"?
