El Monte police offer up 10 percent pay cuts

| | Comments (37) |

News of layoffs within the El Monte Police Department is traveling fast.

I've already spotted coverage of a protest at City Hall Tuesday night on two news stations, and our own Rebecca Kimitch is working on an in-depth story on the issue for tomorrow's paper.

In the meanwhile, here's the news we have so far: We've been reporting for some time now that El Monte police fear they could lose as many as 17 officers if the city can't figure out another way to reduce the budget and deal with a growing multi-million dollar deficit.

Last night, the El Monte Police Officers Association asked instead that the city cut police salaries by 10 percent to avoid layoffs.

Apparently, the deal is being discussed. Layoffs, pay raises and hiring freezes at police departments is always a touchy issue, with law enforcement agencies often arguing that low benefits and a reduced force can lead to decreased public safety.

What do you think? Should the city layoff officers, or will a 10 percent pay cut suffice?

Is the Police Union REALLY offering long-term salary cuts? Are they just proposing book-keeping hokus pokus until the end of June 2009 and then back to the same inflated salaries that got us in this mess in the first place.

EM Taxpayer said:

I think a 10% across the board is reasonable. it's fair. the police are important but not more important than everyone else so that they shouldn't make cuts too.

I just hope Ishigaki doesn't sell the store to these guys. it seems like she wants to be mayor real bad. i hope she don't through all of us into traffic just to do it.

Ishigaki's son-in-law was one of the officers that spoke at the Tuesday night meeting. He was the one that said he was in line to be laid off. My guess is that she won't sell the store, she is giving it away.

And the police chiefs get paid like presidents.

Where every policie union official can buy a council member of their very own.

God help us.....please help us.

I bet their 10% pay cut offer did not include forgoing future pay raises in mid 2009. I am sure there is a lot more to this offer which they know very well the city will not accept. Trying to paint picture of being good guys. Stop playing games and playing with your fellow officers jobs. Smoke and mirrors... I can't believe these guys can look at themselves in the mirror and actually say they are truly representing the best interests of those threatened with layoffs.

El Monte Knows said:

In order to save the city a 10 percent cut must be made and cutting at lease 7 police officers. Fair is fair. Last one hired is first fired. Never mind the scare tactics. Crime is up every where. El Monte has always had a crime problem. Everyone knows it. Especially we who have lived here for years. We can live with what the council decides. Hang in there no matter what! We support you votes.

Anonymous said:

here's a thought. all of us should just promise not to vote for any city council candidate who accepts political contributions from the POA. the council is worried that a vote against the POA will cost them votes in november. well how about we let the council know right now, that you represent us, not the POA and if you accept money from them you won't be getting our vote.

The Entire Police department can thank retired Chief Weldon for selling out. He only cared about himself. Just another town drunk. Look at his big red fat nose. He and his buddy Ernie Gutierrez can hang out at the corner liquor store. This city is in total KOAS.

Annie:
Weldon was instrumental in getting the POA their big raise, along with his buddy, Ernie and Emily. You really need to read: http://www.policeattorney.com/newsletters-84.htm
El Monte POA financed Ernie's campaign for re-election in 2007. Now that Ernie's behavior has gotten so bad that not even the cops can control him, you will see them backing Emily for mayor in 2009. They have her in their pocket now that she has a son-in-law on the force.

You're right about Weldon's nose. Just like W.C. Fields and Ted Kennedy.

FYI Firemen's union also buy seats on City Council. Who did the firemen's union endorse (bribe) for the re-election in 2007 and other elections. Hopefully, those individuals do not sell or give the store. Its politics ... nothing new. They all take $$$

Why not look into which City Council Members received campaign finance from the Titan Group ,Longo, and other special interest groups and friends that made council members and them rich. Why hasn't the City been paid on these loans?

This situation that the City is in is not the fault of city employees, police officers or firemen. Our elected officials (including the treasurer) and City Manager cause this problem. Yes, the economy is bad but they have made the situation worse. They are all very old and have experienced the great depression and other hard economic times and still they had no reserves! Of course they spent the money ... it was not theirs. We think they are stupid but their not! They are know what they are doing and they are making bank at taxpayers expense.

As for the idiot/clown that demanded employee's salaries to be cut by 75% at the recent meeting, I guess he could afford to have his salary cut (he does not have one) , especially when the city/government is providing free housing, welfare, and etc. next, he will feel he is entitled to a pension. we do not have that luxury. we work we do not free load off other peoples hard work. He should try that ... also taking a shower, putting some deodorant and brushing his teeth wouldnt kill him. This is not being mean but factual. Attend a city council meeting and you can smell him. Yuck!

Regarding Ernie our drunken, cheater, thief, abuser mayor there is no need to give him any more publicity. He is done. His career in el monte is over and he did this with no one elses help.He is just a train wreck and I am sure more self destruction is to come.

To the person who make comments on someone's nose you are probably uglier physically and as you are inside. With bigger defects inside and out that surpass a red, fat nose.

Fox 11 decided to lead with a story about the Octomom.

The mention of the POA's latest PR stunt compared the El Monte PD to the Redlands PD who ARE trying to help out and make cuts.

Read the LA Times Article. According the Redlands guys cops in other areas were MAD AT THEM for making cuts.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-redlands19-2009feb19,0,1917767.story

THE ONLY PERSON WHO BETRAYED THEM WERE THEIR POA LEADERS WHO REFUSED TO TAKE A PAY CUT...GET ANGRY AT THEM.

YOU LIARS ONLY WORK 3 ...COUNT 'EM 3 DAYS A WEEK. YOU CAN DO FURLOGHS

Angry Taxpayer said:

did i hear one of the cops on the tv news say they cannot do furloughs? that's ridiculous. it's not like all 140 cops work every day of the week.

most of them work three days a week with each covering different parts of the week. you guys need to cut the BS and come back to reality.

salary cuts - furloughs - or layoffs

pick your poisen buddy. everybody's got a hard luck story these days, you not that special.

i agree with the earlier commentor. the channel 11 news story made the El Monte POA look greedy compared to the police in Redlands. I even heard one of the Redlands officers talking about how he need cut corners in his personal life. Kind of like all the rest of us. The El Monte POA could learn something from them.

The City of El Monte is running on fumes. There is no money to pay the Police with. If things don't get better financially in regards to the city's operating budget the State of California will take over. That is the traffic truth. The council did the right thing in cutting positions. The El Monte Police would not even play ball. Maybe now "they" will realize how bad things (the city's deficit) really are.

Street Smarts said:

I bet the City of South El Monte is glad that they did not change over to the El Momte Police Department. Aguinaga, Delgado, and Goffy Garcia led the crusade to bring them in. They were mistaken. Thanks to Figueroa and Gonzales to sticking to their guns and leading the fight to keep them out. It really goes to show that by doing your homework it all pays off in the end. The LA County Sheriff's Department is the best. No other city police can ever replace them.

I saw Glick on tv. he looks, dresses and combs his hair like a young Richard Nixon.

Maybe we should start calling him TRICKY GLICK

The POA should dump him and his sidekick Walterschied and get one of the younger cops like Lowry to lead them.

to those POA members who are now trying to make the mayor the scapegoat for your greed.

read this old san gabriel tribune article which shows that you gave $10,000 to gutierrez's last campaign along with another $10,000 a piece for Ishigaki and Macias.

IF THE LEADERSHIP ON THE COUNCIL IS BAD, IT'S BECAUSE YOU - THE EL MONTE POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCATION - PAID TO PUT IT THERE.

LA JOBS said:

It is about time that the El Monte Police realize that they too are suject to losing their jobs. They became selfish and would not work thins out. Some leadership. They aren't any more important than anyone else. They thought that they had the support of the mayor and council. Boy were they mistaken. The "cookie jar" is empty. There are other police departments around. They should go see Antonio Villaraigosa. He wants to hire more cops for LA. Problem sloved.

To Streets Smarts:

Of course no one ever replaces sheriff. 1) Cities really do not have any choice/ or resources 2) Sheriffs are no where to be found. How can you replace someone that is not there.

How many sheriffs does South El Monte have 3 or 4 tops. FYI - it was the SEM residents that wanted EMPD because the sheriffs were not responding to calls... empd was. As for Aguinaga, Delgado and Garcia it was their LEADERSHIP that has cleaned up our City. Prior to them in office, our City was a dump going no where. Greater things are happening and will continue in SEM because of them and when Aguinaga becomes Mayor. Mr. Aguinaga you have my support as well as my family. Count on 7 votes to your many on election day.

This was the same crowed that wasted city time putting curfews on the their mayor. I mean talk about avoiding dealing with the real business of government with WINDOW DRESSING legislatin. You can bet alot of staff time go wasted on that effort.

El Monte Budget said:

The younger officers really should blame their very own POA leadership for playing chicken with their futures. why not, no skin off their noses if layoffs come because most of those guys have lots of seniority. They won't cut their salaries cause a 10% cut for them means more than a 10% cut for you.

funny we haven't heard anything from Police Mid-Managers either...wonder why they don't wanna talk salary cuts either.

The POA was happy to bankroll poor leadership at city hall as long as that same poor leadership gave the POA THEIR SHARE OF THE PUBLIC MONEY SPOILS. Now the crooks can't afford to pay their accomplices and enablers in the POA so the POA is angry at the crooks.

layoffs don't have to happen if everyone would just sacrifice a litte.

YOU HAVE A CHOICE AND THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

Louie Aguinaga for Mayor. Are you joking? He is retarded. Just listen to him talk. He is not the sharpest pencil in the can by far. That dude needs serious trainging. Try Council 101 Classes. The City of South El Monte needs to continue forward. Not backwards, like El Monte.

Wanting Out said:

Be careful what you wish for! With layoffs and those applying elsewhere the city may lose too many officers. Contrary to what you might believe, El Monte is not the garden spot in which to work. Most of you would be appalled if you knew how many parolees, probationers, gang members and sex offenders live in El Monte. EMPD provides services that other cities would never ask their police to do. If those management employees who are eligible to retire would do so, it might save a couple jobs for the worker bees. EMPD is top heavy and "El Monte Budget" is right when he/she said no one has heard from the Mid-Managers. The Mid-Managers are Lieutenants and Captains of which at least 4 or 5 are eligible to retire. But instead of stepping up, they are willing to sacrafice someone's livelihood when in fact they could collect their pension and save one of the little guys.

SPIN ALERT said:

Hear that Police Mid-Managers you need to step-up.

It is interesting though how the POA continues to play divide and conquer games with the other barganing units.

A little food for thought. Anyone in SEIU who thinks the cops have your interests in mind (except for the few of you who actually work in the PD and who are maybe dating cops) the POA does not have your interests at heart.

They want to push YOU off the cliff to save themselves some hard choices like the PD in Redlands made.

EM resident said:

I don't think anyone in this city is "wishing" that police officers lose their jobs. What we do wish is that the police department would face reality and realize that the city IS broke and take a pay cut like all the other city employees. You are right when you say that our financial crisis is because of mismanagement. Who mismanaged the city funds? Most of us would, including the POA would place the blame on the city council. Now we must ask, how did this group get in office? I remember getting mailings from the POA urging voters to cast their ballots for the POA's pick. Last election it was Ernie Gutierrez, Emily Isigaki and Norma Macias. The POA got their wish for 2 out of 3. The election before that the POA backed "J" Gomez and Ernie Gutierrez. These are the same people that voted for outrageous salaries for the chief of police and the assistant chief. They are the same people who approved the current police contracts. When those contracts were approved the city was already in financial trouble.

I guess this goes to prove...be careful what you wish for.

Why doesn't the Fire Department cut it's salaries by 10% too like everyone else in El Monte.
