Who knew it was illegal?

So I got an e-mail on Thursday from a friend for Carlos Illingworth who intends to run for the Montebello Unified School District Board of Education.

The e-mail was an invitation to attend "Carlos Illingworth's Poker Tournament Campaign Fundraiser." It was sent from Jessica Mihal, who said she is IIllingworth's friend.

Then on Friday (the next day) I got this e-mail from Mihal saying the tournament is canceled:

"Who knew - but apparently it is not legal to have a gambling tournament as a political fundraiser... :( "

Illingworth may want to rethink who he puts in-charge of his political fundraisers.

Dumb kid. It just proves he's too immature and inexperienced to run our school district.

He worked for the Calderon's, and I'd bet they are behind him. It's easy to control someone like Illingsworth.

This “dumb kid” is displaying integrity, and social and civic responsibility. He is setting a great example for young professionals everywhere about not forgetting your roots, and taking a stand to make a difference in your local community. Personally, I’m impressed that instead of pulling the typical political cop-out to cancel the event with the phrase, “due to unforeseen circumstances” he instead told the truth. This shows me that his campaign is being waged with honesty and transparency…and we definitely need more of that at the Montebello Unified School District. He has my vote.

If we have zero tolerance for mistakes, then we will continue to get more of the same - political insiders using local elections as stepping stones for higher office.

I welcome candidates with the commitment, drive and strength of character to risk it all and pursue these thankless jobs...even if there are bumps along the way.

Are we talking about an 18 year old here? Jaun, I assume you know Mr. Illingworth. You refer to him as a "dumb kid" but never do they mention his age in the article. Wow, how do you know so much about him? It almost sounds like you are obsessed with him and are simply just hating on the guy. How creepy is that!

Well, however old the potential candidate may be, I give him credit for cancelling the event. It seems that he did so as soon as he learned of the conflict. (A learning experience)

I also appreciate his transparency. No one is perfect, right? I am so tired of people putting other people down and especially for petty things. No harm was done. Good grief! I wish Mr. Illingworth the best of luck on his campaign and may God guide him through the journey :-)

Juan and Amanda are foolish people. Do they not both realize that there wasn't "real" gambling planned for the event? As someone who is involved with the fundraiser, I can tell both of you that it was going to be fake money involved in the poker tournament. People would be donating money, and in exchange for their donation, they would receive poker chips worth fake values. At the end of the night, the top 3 winners would receive prize money, which was an additional donation from one of the attendees (to be nameless).

If that type of gambling with fake money is illegal, then someone should alert the cities around SoCal that sponsor that sort of thing with their Casino Nights.

Juan and Amanda need to chill out. Let some people have some fun in the process of raising money for this good cause. There was nothing shady about this event, but the plug got pulled because Carlos wanted to avoid the controversy.
