Whoa. There are a few upsets in this round of elections.

  • In Rosemead, incumbents John Tran and John Nunez were ousted. Returning to office is Maggie Clark, and now she will be joined by Steven Ly and Sandra Armenta, according to this article.
  • In Covina, Kevin Stapleton and John King are returning to the council, and filling the open seat will be former Councilman Bob Low. City Clerk Rosie Fabian received the second lowest number of votes, according tot the city's Web site.
  • In Monterey Park, David Lau returns to office, but Sharon Martinez was ousted. Martinez's seat will now be filled by Betty Tom Chu.Here's the unofficial results.
  • In Azusa, it's much of the same. Voters returned the city's incumbents to to two council seats Tuesday night. Incumbents Keith Hanks and Robert Gonzales held the lead with only provisional ballots left to count Tuesday night. Gonzales had 1,338 votes, while Hanks had 1,141.

Wow. Only 912 more votes, and the "Ox" could have been elected in Monterey Park.

Crying shame about Martinez (in MP) and Tran and Nuñez (in Rosemead). Just goes to show the better candidates do not always win.

The true nature of politics shows us that politicians like Tran, Nunez, Martinez and Wilson eventually get the boot. Corruption catches up with politicians who "think" the election is in the bag. Voters have become smarter and care about who runs their cities. Misuse of public funds, greed and dishonesty does eventually catch up with them. The people have make wise choces in Rosemead, Temple City, and Monterey Park. Let's hear it for the good guys for a change. YEAH!

Rosemead Partners put out a flyer with
"you can protect Rosemead's Quality of Life" on the Clark, Armenta, Ly side

so far so good

On the other side was
"Out of town Developers Have Showered Money on three Rosemead city Council Candidates"

Then pictures of Tran Nunez and Ly

what's wrong with this picture?

Most of Tran Nunez and Lo's money is LOCAL

Most of the money for Clark, Armenta and Ly came from OUT OF STATE

the Big Ly continues

Henry Lo
"Has nearly bankrupted the Garvey School District"

I read that Garvey's problems are declining enrollment and that Henry LO saved the district by renting out Williams School to East LA College.

Did you even bother to read the candidates
campaign contributions declarations?
Sounds like your just repeating Tran,Nunez,Lo
propaganda.
Educate yourself, campaign contributions records
are a matter of public record.

Who is Rosemead Partners biggest Supporter?
Who maintains the Computer "Big Brother" database on all Rosemead voters?
"Big Brother" is watching YOU!

So, Todd thinks it's okay to send out a mailer that is hand addressed "Resident" without any indicatation from who or where it came from and add his city posistion in an attempt to push the Tran development agenda.
And, I recall clearly the SOC mailers & the current mailers and didn't Tran w/a bullhorn lead protesters
across the street from then council member Jay Imperial.
Disgusted in Rosemead should check the campaign contribution records. I did and after Tran accepted 20,000 broker fee for ELAC deal. I certainly ?'d his large contributions from developers and after attending council meetings & viewing on web.
It was apparent Tran,Nunez and supporters lacked the Professionalism,Honesty, and Integrity, which caused the failure; to gain the confidence of the "minions"
of residents.
What brings down a politician?
Their own arrogance and ambition

Theolona Ranger said:

The Big Money was for out of state into Rosemead Polling and polling verification.

A "Big Brother" targeted database was created on all Rosemead voters.

These computer databases are expensive to create and to maintain- very expensive. The mailing printing and cost is minor and reported locally.

Voters got mail targeted to their "hot buttons" or "weaknesses" take your choice.
They were, shall we say- had.

None of these candidate benefits were reported
I have checked or have seen reports but admittedly not the final ones for this election.

Looking at Rosemead Pride or Rosemead Partners or their candidates records is a waste of time.
You know who Gary Taylor, Jay Imperial and Ly's bag man is

we can agree on that one

Pro development agenda?
Remember Gary, Maggie and Jay bragging about all the development they brought to Rosemead?

There will always be development pressure.
Maggie, Gayr and Jay brought in wal-mart

let's hope Steve and Armeta can resist the pressure better.

Maggie, Gary and Jay brought us that monstrosity on Mission West of Rosemead, sailed right through under their General Plan and Zoning.

The new building on Valley west of the library could have been 75 feet tall under Jay, Maggie, and Gary's zoning.

Valley, Garvey and other major streets could be filled lot line to line and right up against the sidewalks with 75 foot tall commercial buildings.

You want to go back?

The developers would love it.

Withe either the old or new general plan more parking must be provided. Todd and Maggie have that one right.

Do we really want more of those?

No more puppets- Make sure Gary Taylor is not the puppet master.

Actually, we don't agree on anything.
You'll just have to let Tran plan behind and get on
w/your life.

Hope for Rosemead said:

The truth of the matter is that Clark, Armenta and Ty ran better campaigns. Voters have become much smarter and informed. They know all too well when they are being taken for a ride. They are well informed about "who" is really looking after their best interest. We must believe that "good" always triumps over that which is "bad" and self serving. That was the case in Rosemead. The voters were tired and fed up with the nonsence that going on at city hall. That is the true nature of politics. Or as it is said the "nature of the beast." Good luck to the new majority. Hopefully they will learn from the three amigos, and not repeat or make the same mistakes as they did. There is hope for Rosemead after all.

Rosemead Resident said:

I am still waiting to hear what positive changes that Clark & Taylor have accomplished in Rosemead for the past 20 years(other than walmart). It goes to prove that if you run a campaign based on positive change, you are not guaranteed to win the election. Margaret Clark and her cronies won by smears, lies, and downright deception. Because you have nothing to show for your 18 years as councilwomen, your only recourse was to campaign on fear and deceit. Now that Clark & Taylor will once again control the city, Clark can continue her passion of traveling on the tax payers dime.
The positive change in Rosemead, the past 2-years, have been great. All the community activities: Oktoberfest, Concerts in the Park, 4th of July parade, Jogging path, and many more, are the result of the vision of Tran, Nunez, and Low. This is besides the much cleaner image Rosemead now reflects. Grifitti is virtually extinct, and crime is down by 15%. If you think going back to the old General Plan is a good idea, you better do your homework. I hope you like having a "mini-mansion" next door to you, because that's what the old plan will give you.
So lets see what the new majority will do with the city being handed over in the best shape it has ever been. And along with the first balanced budget in 15 years, Tran, Nunez, and Low have a lot be proud of.
I fear that Rosemead will once again become the dirty, stagnant city it has been 20+ years.
Hopefully the new regime will continue this trend, in giving Rosemead residents amenities to enjoy and be proud of.

Rosemead Voter said:

Rosemead Resident you are one of their supporters, aren't you? It is over buddy. Go on with your life. Let's see what the future has in store for Rosemead.
I too was fed up with the bs from Tran and Nunez. Clark, Armenta and Ly were the only positive candidates. They kept their materials clean and positive. The more hit pieces that came out on the other three. The more we were convinced that they were the "only ones." It pays to play fair and run a clean campaign. No matter what you say, all the people that voted for these three can't be wrong. That is a given.
Here's to a brand new day in Rosemead!

Hey Martinez and Tran and Nunez all ran in the same circle. No wonder they got kicked out of office. It just goes to show that the residents are sick and tired of dirty politicians. They have become smart in voting in trust worthy and honest politicians.

Todd Kunioka said:

Well, since my name shows up here, I guess I ought to respond--

A cowardly anonymous puppet wrote:
"So, Todd thinks it's okay to send out a mailer that is hand addressed "Resident" without any indicatation from who or where it came from and add his city posistion in an attempt to push the Tran development agenda."

My response: I wrote up a faq on the general plan, handed it out to a number of our supporters, and posted it to the SOC website. You can download a copy for yourself here: http://www.saveourcommunity.us/?q=node/962

I identified myself as the author of that faq, and I included my position to help indicate to the reader that I was not just using someone else's talking points. Unlike pretty much everyone who attacked the new general plan, I have actually read the new plan, the old plan, and the environmental documents that accompanied the rewrite.

Note that no one (not even the "other side") has criticized the content of my faq. Maybe that's because the critics haven't read the new plan. Maybe it's because they *have* read the plan and know my faq is accurate. Wouldn't know which it is. But I do know that, generally speaking, people make better decisions when they're presented with better information.

I did NOT hand out my faq at the candidates forum, and I did NOT mail it to anyone's home. If someone downloaded a copy or photocopied a copy on their own, then mailed it to a number of homes, that's their prerogative. Either way, there's no need for anyone to identify that as a campaign expense. It wasn't campaign literature. It didn't urge a vote for or against anyone. It was just a faq on the general plan.

The person or persons who chose to send out the faq to their neighbors was/were exercising their first amendment right to freedom of speech. Do you have a problem with that?

Cowardly anoynmous Rosemead puppet wrote:
"And, I recall clearly the SOC mailers & the current mailers and didn't Tran w/a bullhorn lead protesters

My response: Well, this sentence doesn't really make any sense. But, regarding Tran and a bullhorn across the street from Jay Imperial's house? No, John Tran was not there. Neither was Polly Low or John Nunez. And we weren't across the street from Jay's house. We were in front of his house, probably around 8 or 9pm (not particularly late).

I had the bullhorn for a while, and another woman who I choose not to identify here held it for a while. We sang "God Bless America" and the National Anthem to protest the lawsuit that Jay Imperial filed that cancelled our election. We were exercising our first amendment rights to assemble peaceably and protest.

If you have a problem with people exercising their first amendment rights, I suggest you leave this country and find one more to your liking.

Todd Kunioka said:

Well, Cowardly Anonymous Puppet (Perhaps we should just call you, "CAP," for short?), I again note your silence on the content of my general plan faq. I will thus conclude that you fall in the category of those who have never read either the old plan or the new plan. I suspected as much.

I suppose ignoring the truth is the only way you can keep spouting the lies you do. That's fine. You have a right to voice your opinion, regardless of how uninformed it may be. Just don't think your right to speak from ignorance prevents me or anyone else from pointing out where you are wrong.

And now, as it is clear you have have nothing substantive to say, I think I'm done here. Feel free to post another content-free, irrational rant right below.

Cheers!

Tran and Nunez are yesterdays news. We look forward to a better Rosemead. Things do change for a good reason. Clark, Armenta and Ly will help move our city forward. Let's give them a chance. We need to support our council members no matter what. We can "agree to disagree," but we must help in making Rosemead a great place to live, shop and enjoy.
