El Monte students need more awareness of college
Apparently students in El Monte do not have enough awareness of college. The city council will discuss at their meeting tomorrow a resolution declaring February College Awareness Month.
The sign of the times was placed on the agenda at the request of Mayor Andre Quintero.
Here is the resolution:
DRAFT RESOLUTION
COLLEGE AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, a college education will increase a student's ability to understand developments in
society, to think critically, to express thoughts clearly in speech and in writing, and to make wise
decisions. These skills are useful throughout a lifetime; and
WHEREAS, a college education can help increase a student's understanding of the community,
the nation, and the world as he or she explores interests, discovers new areas of knowledge,
considers lifelong goals, and becomes a responsible citizen; and
WHEREAS, the world is changing rapidly. Many jobs rely on new technology and require more
brain power than ever. There is fierce competition for jobs that only a few years ago seemed
plentiful. In a student's working life, more and more jobs will require education beyond high
school. With a college education, students will have more jobs from which to choose; and
WHEREAS, a person who attends college generally earns more than a person who does not.
When comparing salaries over a lifetime, the earning gap is significant; and
WHEREAS, the City of El Monte has proclaimed the month of February 2010 as College
Awareness Month and encourages all educational communities to commemorate this occasion
with appropriate instructional activities; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the City of El Monte proclaims the month of February 2010 as College

On the one hand how can you argue against encouraging our young people to go to college.
On the other hand, talk about a basically meaningless "feel good" resolution that merely articulates aspirations but proposes nothing concrete to achieve those aspirations.
I declare next month, "Full Employment for Everyone Month" and encourage all employers to hire somebody.

Has anyone botherd to check the academic shape Mr. Quintero left Rio Hondo College in?
The professor's along with the students had a vote of "no confidence" in him.
What an idiot he is. He's been in office two months and wants to declare Feburary college awareness month.
He was a college board member for 8 years and didn't do a thing for Rio Hondo College. Proof is in the pudding. Just ask any professor or past Rio Hondo student.
Fix our financial problems first.
I agree with "Quintero is Lame". The City has numerous problems and he wants to waste city resources to declare February College Awareness? Shouldn't his friends on the school boards (elementary, highschool and college) be worrying about this? Mr.Quintero you have bigger problems ahead of you such as the employees furloughs that SEUI members "believe" will end this February,which is not going to happen due to the State's and Nation's financial situation. And then don't forget that you also have to worry about the Police's Department raises this upcoming June, and then finally the LA County wants their firestation open ( they really want $$$$). wheew.............. you have a lot of unions to cater to, its a shame you don't cater to the community.
Luckily for you and el monte residents you are a one term mayor :)!
The new mayors a real dope, most kids in this city never finish High School.
Quintero, Rio Hondo, and El Monte
1. Quintero abolished the 7-year-old Rio Hondo College Center here in El Monte.
2. Quintero allowed off-campus credit classes everywhere, but in El Monte.--He just didn't/doesn't care.
3. Quintero gave us our part of a $240,000,000 bond--tax.
It will cost over $450,000,000 to pay it back.
IMPACT? RENTERS SAW THEIR RENTS SOAR. OWNERS PASSED ON THE BOND/TAX TO RENTERS. THEY PULLED OUT.
THAT'S WHY TWO SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED IN EL MONTE AND
IT LOOKS LIKE MORE ARE ON THE WAY.
YET, SEYMOUR CONTINUES TO CONSTRUCTION--KIND OF LIKE
FILLING UP A SHIP AS IT'S SINKING BELOW THE WAVES.
4. Quintero replace himself with a clone of himself to
Miss Represent us. She spent $34,000 to get elected.
5. Quintero still runs his emclp (Without ever filing any paperwork as a business, non-profit, whatever it is-and he's a lawyer--yeah, right!)
As a staunch SEIU member, he wants union jobs here.
