Final: Galaxy-San Jose Earthquakes

Galaxy 2 San Jose Earthquakes 0

An enthralling opening 45 minutes was followed by an undistinguished second half that saw the Earthquakes tighten up on defense and the Galaxy largely held in check as a result.

David Beckham, seeking space on the right, essentially succeeded only in taking himself out of the game, as his Galaxy teammates were either incapable or unwilling to find him.

That left Becks shaking his head midway through the half and stalking back into position clearly disgruntled.

A Beckham-Landon Donovan break a minute from time provided what little excitement there was, although the move broke down when Donovan unselfishly (too unselfishly) attempted to involve Alan Gordon.

Taking stock, the question becomes what sort of Galaxy team do we have here? Apparently one that can’t beat a weakened Rapids, but can overcome an expansion team (without a strike force) playing its first game.

We’ll see what Gullit says in the press conference.

Stay tuned.
