The Galaxy announced the worst-kept secret around today when it agreed to terms with Argentine defender Eduardo Dominguez. He can play central defense or left back.

Dominguez spent one season with Huracán of the Argentine Primera Division. He joins the Galaxy roster upon the receipt of his P1 visa and International Transfer Clearance (ITC).

Updated: The 29-year-old also played 85 games for Velez Sarsfield from 1996-2002, Olimpo, Racing Club, Independiente and Columbia's Medellin.

The Galaxy press release also ominiously notes the team must "clear a senior roster spot in order to officially add Dominguez to the roster."

Farewell Abel Xavier? Or Greg Vanney? Or - who would you dump?

So, Nick, does this mean that Un-abel Xavier is going to be cut loose? Or does Bozo the Mad Genius want the Galaxy to be associated with bad peroxide do's, so that the team can make more money from the beautician set?

I think this is a good move the Galaxy. You always need a balanced side.

Now that Dominguez is in the bldg, how about Osman Chavez? Any word on when or if he will be jioning the club? It is good to have Wolfy creeping around the shadows of the HDC not just USC.

I like Greg Vanney. He has done a lot for the league. Keep him as a reserve.

Xavier? I watched him play for the exuberant and creative Portugal side as a young man in the late 1990s and in Euro 2000. Many of his old teammates like Nuno Gomes are still with the team and played well in the Euro tournament last month. It's sad to see how Xavier has declined since then, but he has declined. Let him retire.

Good news...we can definitely need help in the G's defense.

As for Xavier:

His contract and salary is guaranteed till the end of this 2008 season.

So even if we would waive him, his salary in full would count against the teams salary cap.

Not sure how it looks if he would retire, which he doesn't want to since he gets good $ for it.

So maybe AEG can offer him a sweetener (offer him some entertainment jobs, which he is after + a nice "payout" if he retires)

The only other hope of getting rid of him otherwise remains a trade...but who wants him with a high salary, combined with lots of poor performances?
