Rumor of the Day: Becks to England - no, Make That Italy

Actually, two.

David Beckham is interested in joining an EPL club in the MLS off-season.

Or he is heading to Italy's AC Milan - and a permanent deal is possible.

And the MLS season isn't even over yet (well, OK, the Galaxy's probably is).

For what it's worth, neither of these two sources are infamous tabloids, but then respected papers need to sell copies, too.

I've read both. The story about Milan trying to purchase Beckham is nonsense. AEG would never let him go before his contract expires because 1)Beckham is the main reason people come to see the Galaxy 2)AEG can make more money with him than from any transfer fee 3)AEG could sue for breach of contract if Beckham tried to make any move to Milan.

The story about England is more interesting, and could lead to a showdown between AEG and Beckham's representatives, who would fight for Beckham if he wants to be loaned to an EPL club. Of course, AEG would hate to loan Beckham to any club, especially in the physical EPL, because of the risk of injury (we all know what happened last year).

Oh dear.... when will people realise that it's all about brand Beckham and nothing else. Anything to keep his name in the papers.

For example, he travels with the English squad, is given two England caps for a few minutes on the pitch. His activities make sense when you consider the companies who pay him to represent them.

It's all about big business not football.

wiseacre, I disagree. Why would Capello summon Beckham if Capello had no use for him? Why should Capello care about Brand Beckham, since it really doesn't do the English national team any good in the long run (I doubt Beckham will be around for the 2010 World Cup)? Granted, there might be an under-the-table agreement between the two, or Capello might just be doing Beckham a personal favor. Your criticism makes sense only if the same entities that sponsor Beckham sponsor the English national team (which I don't think is the case) -- or if there's some under-the-table agreement.
