The Sol and Washington Freedom open the inaugural Women's Professional Soccer season Sunday at Home Depot Center.

I took a look at the league and the grass roots marketing strategy being employed in this week's column.

Updated: BTW, today is Shannon Boxx Day in the city of Torrance; the Sol midfielder, who grew up in Torrance, will be honored at tonight's City Council meeting, which begins at 7 o'clock at City Hall, 3031 Torrance Blvd.

Coincidentally, the South High girls team, which Boxxy played for between 1991 and 1995, will also receive a certificate of recognition tonight for winning the CIF-SS Division 5 Championship. How's that for motivation?

"It's very reasonable - it's $10 a ticket," Sol coach Abner Rogers said. "I can't think of another sport where you can pay $10 and see the best players in the world."
I'm not sure what he is talking about... the cheapest seats (endline) are $20 for the game. I guess she must be refering to season tickets... but you aren't spending $10 on season tickets... you can spend $10/game for season tickets.

I thought about going to the game, but at $40 for two tickets and $15 for parking... I decided to pass.

Nick replies: I believe Rogers was talking about the family pack of four tickets that costs $49. My apologies, I should have been more explicit
